Two years of Pope Francis – Change from within

To Change the World – Pope Francis on  Twitter
4th Sunday of Lent
2nd Anniversary of the Election of Pope Francis
For the past ten days there have been many news features on Pope Francis. He has been the focus of media attention – mainly catholic media – since, on March 13, Friday, he has completed two years of his leadership service. I would like to label these two years of Pope Francis, not as ‘successful’ years, but ‘meaningful’ years!
My mind goes back to many news-worthy actions and words of the warm, loving, humble, and merciful Pope. More than these, my heart has registered very deep and emotional reactions of those who have been touched by the Pope. My memory goes back to March 28, 2013, just two weeks after the Election of Pope Francis. He was in Casal del Marmo, the juvenile correction facility near Rome. He had gone there to celebrate the Mass of the Last Supper on Holy (Maundy) Thursday. He had washed the feet of 12 juvenile prisoners, including the feet of two young ladies. It was reported that the 12 included Orthodox and Muslim detainees as well.

When the juvenile prisoners of Los Angeles Juvenile Detention Facility heard that the Pope was going to Casal del Marmo, they had sent him letters expressing their appreciation. Here are a few sample mails:

Dear Pope Francis,
Thank you for washing the feet of youth like us in Italy.
We also are young and made mistakes.
Society has given up on us, thank you
that you have not given up on us.

Dear Pope Francis,
I don't know if you have ever been to where I live.
I have grown up in a jungle of gangs and drugs and violence.
I have seen people killed. I have been hurt.
We have been victims of violence.
It is hard to be young and surrounded by darkness.
Pray for me that one day I will be free
and be able to help other youth like you do.

Dear Pope Francis,
I know the same youth feet that you wash are like me.
Drugs have been part of me life for so long.
We all struggle to be sober.
But you inspire me and I promise to be sober
and help others with the cruel addiction of crystal meth.

These mails express not only sentiments of affection and appreciation, but also sentiments of resolve to change… change for the better. That is the core of the Lenten season. I feel happy that the Pope, more than all the structural changes he has initiated in Vatican, is making significant impact on thousands of individuals to change their lives.

We know that any prison, or correction facility can only ‘impose’ changes on prisoners. What the prisoner needs is more of a ‘inspiration’ for change. I feel Pope Francis has given this to those young detainees of Rome and L.A. On April, 2, 2015, he is going to Rebbibia, the prison in Rome housing adults. We pray that these prisoners too may have a change of heart like the young detainees had in 2013.

While reflecting on how Pope Francis has brought about change in thousands of individuals cutting through human made barriers – including the high-rise walls of a prison, my mind recalled another news item published three years back. I read this piece of news in http://www.nytimes.com. What began as a glance turned into curiosity and led me towards some serious reflection. As I was reflecting on today’s Gospel, this news item, especially the picture attached to it, was frequently flashing across my mind. This was the news item: THE VANISHING MIND - Life, With Dementia by PAM BELLUCK, published: February 25, 2012. Let me share with you my thoughts on the picture as well as on the news feature. Although this feature was about the problem of Alzheimer’s or Dementia in a prison in California, my attention was turned towards other factors related to this news.

First, about the picture: This picture had a background – the high-rise wall like in any other prison. On the top of the wall ran a barbed wire. This barbed wire must have had a high-voltage electric current running through it 24x7. This ‘fortress’ was meant as a protection. Protection for whom and against whom? Any child would answer this question saying that this ‘fortress’ was meant to protect the society from the criminals kept inside the walls. But, when I saw this picture, my mind thought otherwise… I thought that this wall was to protect the ‘inmates’ from the outside world. This reversal occurred to me because of what I saw in the foreground of this picture. In the foreground there were six or seven men. But the focus was on two of them – one black and another white. The black person was about 50 years old and the white person was about 70 or 80. The black person had his hands wrapped around the shoulders of the white person and, possibly, was leading him somewhere. One can see the kindness in the eyes of the black person looking at the older white person.
The black person is Secel Montgomery Sr. Sacel talks about how he killed his sister-in-law by stabbing her many times since she refused to give him money to buy drugs. Even in the prison his record had not been ‘clean’. Despite that, he has recently been entrusted with an extraordinary responsibility. He and other convicted killers at the California Men’s Colony help care for prisoners with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, assisting ailing inmates with the most intimate tasks: showering, shaving, applying deodorant, even changing adult diapers, says the feature.
If this experiment meets with even 50% of success, then, I feel that ‘salvation has come to California Men’s Colony’. “It’s a long road to recovery and I’m working on it…” are the closing words spoken by one of the prisoners. Isn’t this salvation? For this salvation to reach its fruition, these ‘inmates’ need to be shielded from the outside world… Now, tell me, whom should the high-rise wall protect?

Second, about the news-feature: The moment we think of prison cells, the first thoughts that crowd our minds are – crime, hatred, violence, abuse, punishment. I am of a firm opinion that punishment and imprisonment can only bring about minimal, temporary changes in a person. The real, lasting changes have occurred due to love and kindness. We have heard of so many who have changed their entire life-style due to some kindness shown to them inside these hopeless cells. Is there a place for kindness, compassion, and help in such a place? You bet. I don’t think there is any place in the world so hopeless that can refuse entry to love and kindness. What is happening in California Men’s Colony is only the tip of the iceberg. All over the world, in so many millions of prison cells there is a chance, a place for love. Although this is not discussed in the feature, I can see how these little acts of love shown in these prison cells, bless those who give as well as those who receive.

Usually we are accustomed to seeing prisoners at the receiving end… of love and compassion from those who visit them. Sometimes these external helpers may tend to ‘preach’ to those who are inside. At such moments, I have heard these ‘insiders’ say: “It is easy for you to say these things… If you were in my place, then you would know!” An ‘outsider’ cannot bring significant changes on these ‘insiders’. What is the other alternative?
Real, lasting help can come from someone who is one among them. Imagine that a person, who is blameless, wanting to help the prisoners, gets himself imprisoned; becomes one of the prisoners and then, from within, begins to change them… This help would be more acceptable than the help given by an ‘outsider’. But, is this possible in real-life? I don’t know. But, it has happened in other situations as in the case of St.Damien Joseph de Veuster of Moloka'i. He had worked for the leprosy (Hansen's disease) patients in Hawaii; was affected by the disease himself and died at the age of 49. His self-identification with the leprosy patients was total and complete. On the day Damien knew he had contracted leprosy, he said from the altar, “we, the lepers”. I am sure St.Damien must have got his inspiration for total identification and total immersion from Jesus’ Incarnation.

This total immersion, identification and Incarnation is spoken of in today’s Gospel in one of the most – probably, the most – famous verses in the Bible: God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3: 16)
John 3:16 is probably the best loved verse in the Bible and it has been called "everybody's text" and the “gospel of the gospels”… This text is the very essence of the gospel. It tells us that the initiative in all salvation is God’s love for man. As St. Augustine puts it: "God loves each one of us as if there were only one of us to love." http://cbci.in/Sunday-Reflections.aspx

We have heard hundreds, perhaps thousands of love stories. Most of these love stories are just one frame from a full-length movie called life. What is happening in California prison day after day may not be ‘news-worthy’ on a daily basis. Similarly what is happening in our ordinary, day to day life is also a love story which may not get media attention.
As we are meditating on ‘God-so-loved-the-world’, we shall set aside some moments today and in the coming days during this Lenten Season to think of the continuous, but unrecognised love stories we experience in our own families. I know of families where the parent, the life-partner, a sibling is taking care of persons who cannot take care of themselves. This is not just a one-day, one month love-affair…But a year-long affair… for ten, twenty, thirty, forty and more years… Let us salute these silent stalwarts of true love and dedication who will not adorn any history book.

Our closing thoughts return to Pope Francis. He has identified himself very much with the suffering, the poor and the people on the periphery. He has brought changes in the lives of thousands of very simple people, both young and old. We pray that God gives Pope Francis good health to continue his mission of bringing the merciful ‘Emmanuel’ closer to the world, which seems to shun the true ‘Light’ (John 3:19).

The Secret to Change

இந்த வாக்கியம் "நற்செய்திகளின் நற்செய்தி" (Gospel of the gospels) என்று சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

Cleansing the temple of our heart

Jesus Money Changers Whip
3rd Sunday of Lent – International Women’s Day
Showers for the homeless are the latest addition to St Peter’s Square. These showers were opened in February, 2015. The reason behind such an effort was to help the homeless people feel a bit more of self-worth. As one of the beneficiaries of these showers said, “Now I can boldly stand among the people”.
Cleaning oneself is a basic need of human beings. Cleansing oneself is a strong theme of Lent. It is more of the interior cleansing, than the external. The Gospel, given to us this Sunday, talks of Jesus cleansing the Temple of Jerusalem. This event is recorded in all the four Gospels. John places this at the beginning of the public life of Jesus (John 2:13-22), whereas the synoptic Gospels talk about this just before the Passion (Matthew 21:12-17; Mark 11: 15-19; Luke 19: 45-48).
‘Cleansing the temple’ reminds me of a short story (call it a joke!):
In South Africa (when it was suffering from apartheid) a Black was entering a church. A policeman saw him and shouted, "Stop! That church is for the Whites."
The Black man explained: "But I'm only going in to clean the church."
"Well, in that case, okay," answered the man of the law. "But don't let me catch you praying…..”

We are sadly aware that our churches, temples and mosques need cleaning more than ever. We have accumulated way too much rubbish in our places of worship. Hence, the event of Jesus cleansing the Jerusalem Temple can teach us lots of lessons. Jesus, ‘the-meek-and-humble-of-heart’ person is seen erupting like a volcano, wielding a whip. Such a posture does not fit into our picture of Jesus! I remember seeing this picture as a banner for one of the protest marches organised by the Christians demanding justice for a particular cause. But, I cannot imagine any church opting for this Jesus as the main picture or a statue behind the altar.

From the First Sunday of Lent we have been meeting Jesus in different situations and in very different locations. On the First Sunday we met Him in the desert, hungry, tired and tormented by the Satan. On the Second Sunday we met Him on the mountain, in a moment of glory. Today, the Third Sunday of Lent, we meet Him in the Temple of Jerusalem in a ‘shocking’ episode of anger and violence.
Of these three episodes, I can very well see quite a few churches opting for the Transfiguration of Jesus as the first choice picture behind the altar. The hungry, tired Jesus in the desert (without the Satan) would be the second choice. Jesus angry and violent, wielding a whip? Well, this could be in a picture gallery close to the Church, but not inside the church! Today, the Church invites us to see this ‘different’ Jesus at least once in a while, especially during the special season of Lent.

Another feature of these three Sundays that caught my attention was the three locations: the desert, the mountain and the temple. All these are special places where one can meet God. In the desert and the mountain one needs to search for God, while the temple is the place we humans have built to meet God easily. Paradoxically, when the Son of God went to the temple – the famous Jerusalem Temple – He could not meet God. He could also sense that thousands who had come there could not meet God. Naturally, the next logical question was: What was the use of that temple when it had lost its prime purpose of helping people meet God? The Temple had become too filthy like the ‘Augean Stables’ (literally) and needed immediate cleaning. In the gospels we hear Jesus saying that the temple had been turned into a ‘house of trade’ (John) and a ‘den of robbers’(the other three gospels). Jesus took up the cleaning in full earnest.

Jesus’ encounter with the Temple began when He was 12 years old. Even at that time, the Boy Jesus must have seen some anomalies in His Father’s House. Every year as He went to the Temple for His annual obligations, He must have come back with lots of questions… painful questions. This year He wanted to find an answer to His questions… Rather, He decided to become an answer to His questions.

Among all the anomalies, what must have pained Jesus most was the way the poor and the gentiles were treated in the temple. The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. (John 2:13) These are the opening words of today’s gospel. Every Jew was looking forward to going to Jerusalem at the time of the Passover. Having come from a humble labourer’s family Himself, Jesus knew how hard it was for the poor people to put aside something for the temple each year. They brought to Jerusalem all that they had set aside for God through the year. Going to Jerusalem was considered a peak experience for the Jews (Psalm 122). The happy anticipation of going to ‘God’s House’ was becoming more and more of a nightmare for the poor Jews year after year because of the market that was growing around and inside the temple.
The Passover was a peak season for Jerusalem. (You can see that I have begun speaking in ‘commercial’ terms.) The poor Jews had to face a two-pronged attack from the market forces that have grown around the Temple. The oxen, sheep and pigeons that the poor had brought with them became ‘unacceptable’ by the Priests. They found some little blemish in them. Hence, the poor had to buy these offerings from the temple market at a much higher price. The second attack came in the form of the annual temple tax they had to pay. This tax could not be paid in the Roman coins since they had the image of Caesar on them. Hence, they had to change these coins into the ‘temple coins’. Here again the poor were cheated royally. Thus the Pilgrimage to Jerusalem which was supposed to fill the poor with graces and replenish them for the next year, became a journey that fleeced them and left them exhausted. They must have felt that God was receding from them year after year and that they could never measure up to the temple requirements. They must have also questioned how their God had become the sole monopoly of the Priests and other temple merchants.
There was another group of people who were also raising similar questions. They were the gentiles. The temple market occupied what was known as the Court of the Gentiles – the outer court of the Jerusalem Temple. The Gentiles were permitted only to this outer court and no further. Since this court had become a noisy, unruly market place, the Gentiles could not pay their homage to the God of Israel, whom they were very keen to meet. Many of them must have returned home quite disgusted with what they saw and would have decided never again to go back to Jerusalem.

Jesus identified himself with these two groups who had agonising questions about God who was locked up inside the Temple of Jerusalem by the selfish Priests and merchants. He sought a solution. He began cleansing the Temple! Some commentators would call this act of Jesus a miracle. How did He undertake such a daring act and still not get killed on the spot is a miracle indeed! What made Him do this? The Gospel says: "Zeal for the House of God consumed Him."
The temple authorities could see this zeal and they had no answer to this. Still, putting up a brave front, they questioned Jesus: "What sign have you to show us for doing this?" Jesus did not answer them directly but threw a challenge at them: "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." (John 2:18-19) A temple that took 46 years to be built can be built in three days? What a childish way of speaking!
Jesus spoke of a different temple – His own Body! The Body of Jesus, which was destroyed on the Cross, was built up again in three days. In this temple there would be no more problems in meeting God; in this temple God cannot be bought; in this temple there will be no inner and outer courts to segregate people… All are welcome to meet God here!

Our reflections will not be complete, if we do not talk of cleansing our society. Today, March 8 – the International Women’s Day – we need to reflect on the cleansing needed in our view on women. In connection with this International Day, BBC had broadcast a documentary – ‘India’s Daughter’. This documentary, created by Leslee Udwin, a lady from the United Kingdom, has earned a ban in India and whipped up lot of discussion. This documentary talks of that painful, tragic night in Delhi when a young lady was brutally gang raped in a running bus and later thrown out of the bus. She ultimately succumbed to the brutality unleashed on her.
This case drew unprecedented protests across India and the case was put on fast track to deliver justice. But, now it is more than two years and no verdict is reached yet. The brutality of this event still haunts the Indian conscience.

We know that among the many cultures that give women high honour, India must be ranking very high, since we have enshrined many female deities in our temples. But, in real life, women face the most pathetic treatment from men and women alike! We pray that the whip-wielding Jesus will cleanse our hearts which puts women on pedestals in temples, but tramples them underfoot in real life! ‘Spring cleaning’ is a call to conversion!

International Women’s Day Theme 2015

(The Court of the Gentiles) என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது.

Tragedies leading to Transfiguration

The new martyrs of Libya

2nd Sunday of Lent
The video clipping released by ISIS two weeks ago (February 15) shocked the world once again. 21 Coptic Christians from Egypt were brutally murdered by the ISIS on the shores of Libya. While some countries are thinking on the lines of ‘eye-for-an-eye’ strategies, a 60 year old mother, who had lost two of her sons in this tragedy, and her youngest son created waves of hope to say that the world will not become totally blind by ‘eye-for-an-eye’ formula. They also teach all of us how to view personal tragedies with the eyes of faith.
When Bishoy Estafanos Kamel, aged 25, and his younger brother Samuel Estafonas Kamel, aged 23, were killed by ISIS, they died calling out the name of Christ. Their younger brother, Beshir Kamel, aged 21, gave an interview in Sat 7 Arabic, a Christian Satellite TV channel operating in the Middle East. What Beshir said in that interview speaks volumes about this young man and his mother.
Beshir thanks the ISIS for releasing that video since it has had a faith-affirming effect on him and the people of the village: “(My brothers) are a pride to Christianity. I am proud of them and I walk with my head held high. ISIS gave us more than we could have asked from them when they didn’t edit out the part where they declared their faith and called out the name of Jesus Christ. ISIS has helped us strengthen our faith. Yes, believe me. I thank ISIS because they did not cut out the audio when they screamed declaring their faith.”
What Beshir shared about his mother is quite touching. When Beshir asked his mother what her response would be if she came across an IS man on the street, she said, “I will ask God to open his eyes and invite him to our house.”

The massacre carried out by ISIS in cold blood has been interpreted as a witnessing to faith by Beshir and his mother. This tragic event and its interpretation, in a remote way, remind me of Abraham leading his son Isaac to be sacrificed on a mountain.
In many religions, animals are sacrificed at the altar by slitting their throats. If Abraham had gone on with his sacrifice of Isaac, probably he would have treated his son as a sacrificial lamb and slit his throat. The ‘ritual’ of killing that ISIS has adopted, reminds us of these sacrifices. When the people of the village of al-Aour, from where many of the victims have hailed, saw the video of the killing of their kith and kin, they were probably reminded of the Biblical sacrifices.  That is why Beshir, in his interview said, “In fact, in the village, more than feeling sad, they are feeling happy and congratulating one another because so many from the village laid down their lives for Jesus Christ.”

We know of many persons who have been tested beyond reasonable limits and how they have been shining examples of trust and faith in God. The Bible has many such examples, starting with Abraham. Right from the moment God took over the life of Abraham, he was put through many trials. The test presented to us in today’s first reading (Genesis 22: 1-18 – selected texts) was, probably, the greatest of them all – namely, to kill his own son and offer him as a sacrifice to God.

God chose a mountain top for this painful sacrifice. Abraham must have grown up with the hope that God lived on mountains and a person meeting God on a mountain, would come down filled with God’s gift. Now, when Abraham goes up the mountain, he will not be filled; but, rather, he would be deprived of the precious gift God had given him at the ripe old age of 100. This was a reversal which was way beyond Abraham’s reasoning capacity. Still Abraham begins this torturous journey, relying not on his reasoning, but his faith.
The test of Abraham was more poignant in that he had to travel three days with his son Isaac to perform this sacrifice. What would they have spoken? Every time Abraham saw his beloved son, his heart must have bled. Why would God do this? Isn’t it already cruel enough to ask Abraham to sacrifice his son? Then, why make him go through this torture of three days?
At the end of these three days, when they reach the mountain, Abraham makes his son Isaac carry the firewood meant for his own sacrifice. When Isaac poses the innocent question about the lamb, Abraham must have turned aside and mumbled the famous line: “God will provide!”

Some scripture scholars would explain this incident as a fore-shadow of the Sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary. The Passion of Jesus was spread over three days of torture. Like Isaac, Jesus also carried the wood on which he would be sacrificed. The torture that Abraham had to undergo was an indication of what God the Father would undergo during the Passion and Death of His own Son.

Abraham went up the mountain to perform a sacrifice. He returned home filled with God-experience and blessings. The Gospel of today (Mark 9: 2-10) talks of the three disciples who went up the mountain and met God. This would strengthen them for later sacrifices in their lives. Sacrifices either precede or follow God-experience. This is clear also in the case of the Coptic Christians of Egypt who feel proud of their sons laying down their lives for Christ.

Deep experiences of God should take us back to the people. This is what happens in the final part of the Transfiguration event. Peter wanted to prolong the ‘experience’ by erecting tents. God intervened and said, “This is my Son. Listen to him.” That was an indirect reminder to Peter as well as to us, not to be lost in the moment, but to keep silent and listen to the Son. What would the Son say? “It is nice to stay on like this. But, we need to get back to the people to ‘transfigure’ them.”

As we conclude, let us turn our minds back to Beshir, who at the end of his interview was asked to pray and he, without any hesitation, obliged. Responding quickly to a request from the TV programme host, Beshir prayed openly saying: “Dear God, please open their (ISIS) eyes to be saved and to quit their ignorance, and the wrong teachings they were taught.”
Let us pray earnestly for ISIS as well as for many other fundamentalists, who, in the name of God and religion tend to promote more and more hatred in this world. May they be ‘transfigured’ into full human beings!

Abraham sacrificing Isaac - TIZIANO Vecellio
