Three Wise Men

Feast of the Epiphany

A boy asked his father, “Dad, if three frogs were sitting on the banks of a stream, and one frog decided to jump into the stream, how many frogs would be left on the banks?” The dad thought it was too silly a question and replied nonchalantly, “Two.” “No,” the son replied. “Here is the question again: There are three frogs and one decides to jump, how many are left?” The dad took up the question more seriously. His face brightened up since he thought he got the clue. He said, “Oh, I get the point! If one decided to jump, the others would too. So there are none left.” The boy said, “No dad, wrong again. The answer is three. The frog only DECIDED to jump.”
A nice little parable on New Year Resolutions! What do we do with our resolutions? Do we DECIDE to follow them or do we decide to FOLLOW them? (I hope you got the point from the emphasis!) Do we put our resolutions into ACTIONS?
Today the Church gives us an opportunity to honour three persons as patrons of resolutions. Yes, we are talking of the Magi – also known as three Kings or three Wise Men. It is so appropriate to think of these wise men, as we begin a brand new year with some serious resolutions – big or small. Actually it is easier to follow the big ones. The small ones tend to vanish from our vision rather easily. These wise men journeyed, perhaps, hundreds of miles following a tiny star.

Following a star is possible only at night. Stars are not visible during the day. This means that these wise men must have done most of their journey at night – not an easy option given their mode of transport etc. It must have been very difficult to gaze upon one little star among the hundreds, on a clear sky. What if the sky was not clear? Then they would have to wait until clouds and mist clear. So, their journey must have taken nights, many nights. Still, they persisted. What a resolve! This alone is reason enough to honour them as patrons of resolutions!

Nowadays, the phrase ‘following a star’ is, unfortunately, misinterpreted as following a star-personality. In India, more unfortunately, we have too many of these stars, especially in the cine field and in cricket. The amount of time wasted on these stars is staggering as far as an Indian fan is concerned. By the time these fans learn that ‘following these stars’ lead them nowhere, it is rather too late. If only the typical Indian fan can take a new year resolution to treat cinema and cricket as only entertainments!

The Gospel of Matthew (2: 1-12) says that these wise men were from the East. They were probably experts in astrology – namely, the study of stars. Hence, when they saw this new star, they were able to predict the birth of a King. Their study led them further. They decided to follow the star and meet the King.
Unfortunately, there are some experts who are king-makers by studying the star in which one is born. We are aware of one of the Presidents in an Asian country who has changed the constitution of the country, so that he could run for the post of President for the third term. Although his second term ends in 2016, this President, it is said, has anticipated the election, taking the advice of the astrologers – the king-makers! In general, most of the political leaders in Asia seem to trust their stars rather than trust their people. Naturally, people also don’t seem to trust them!

Why blame political leaders, who have only one aim in their life – to stay in power? Most of us abdicate our power to the stars attached to our birth. What these stars predict each week, tends to influence our decisions to a large extent. Should we allow stars and planets to influence our lives so much? We set aside time to read ‘stars foretell’ columns in the papers. But, how many of us have the time to look up at the sky and contemplate the beauty of the stars? Unfortunately, those who live in cities hardly see the skies. The skyscrapers and artificial lights have narrowed down our view of the unlimited skies.
How many of us have looked at stars, the real ones in the sky, in the recent past? We don’t seem to have the time to look up at the sky. We are too busy with our survival on earth. The only time we look up at the sky is when dark clouds gather. This look is tinged with the doubt whether it would rain. Similarly, when dark clouds gather in our hearts, we tend to look up with doubt, to see whether God is there. If we look up only when dark clouds gather outside or inside, then we can see only dark clouds and not beyond. Beyond those dark clouds, stars twinkle and beckon us to follow them.

The story of the three wise men has inspired quite many other stories. One of them is “THE STORY OF THE OTHER WISE MAN” written by Henry van Dyke. The name of this ‘fourth’ wise man is Artaban. He wishes to join the three wise men. He sells all his properties and buys a sapphire, a ruby and a pearl as gifts to the King. As he begins his journey, he meets with a Jew who is very sick. He stays with him and ministers to his needs. In order to make up for the delay, he sells his sapphire to buy camels to cross the desert. When he reaches Bethlehem, he learns that his friends – the three wise men – had already left back to their countries. He also learns that the Child Jesus has been taken to Egypt. On his way to Egypt, he comes across the army of Herod who are slaughtering children. In order to save one of those children, he gives away the ruby.
Artaban’s search for the King takes 33 years. At last when he reaches Jerusalem, he hears of Jesus being led away to Calvary to be crucified. He wants to give away the pearl to the soldiers and rescue Jesus from their hands. On his way to Calvary, he comes across a slave girl being led away to be sold. He parts with the pearl as a ransom for the girl. At that moment there is an earth quake!

Here are the closing lines of this lovely story:
One more lingering pulsation of the earthquake quivered through the ground. A heavy tile, shaken from the roof, fell and struck the old man on the temple. He lay breathless and pale, with his gray head resting on the young girl's shoulder, and the blood trickling from the wound. As she bent over him, fearing that he was dead, there came a voice through the twilight, very small and still, like music sounding from a distance, in which the notes are clear but the words are lost. The girl turned to see if some one had spoken from the window above them, but she saw no one.
Then the old man's lips began to move, as if in answer, and she heard him say in the Parthian tongue:
"Not so, my Lord! For when saw I thee a hungered, and fed thee? Or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw I thee a stranger, and took thee in? Or naked, and clothed thee? When saw I thee sick or in prison, and came unto thee? Three-and-thirty years have I looked for thee; but I have never seen thy face, nor ministered to thee, my King."
He ceased, and the sweet voice came again. And again the maid heard it, very faintly and far away. But now it seemed as though she understood the words:
"Verily I say unto thee, inasmuch as thou hast done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, thou hast done it unto me."
A calm radiance of wonder and joy lighted the pale face of Artaban like the first ray of dawn on a snowy mountain-peak. One long, last breath of relief exhaled gently from his lips.
His journey was ended. His treasures were accepted. The other Wise Man had found the King.

The FOUR wise men – our heroes of today’s liturgy – looked beyond dark clouds and followed the star. May the good Lord plant a star in our life’s firmament, a star that would lead us to the Lord’s presence day after day in this New Year!

Three wise men in the desert

அவற்றில் ஒன்று Henry Van Dyke அவர்கள் எழுதிய “The Other Wise Man”, “மற்றுமொரு ஞானி” என்ற கதை.

The tsunami of violence

The Feast of the Holy Family and the Feast of the Holy Innocents
Norman Vincent Peale, a great preacher and the author of many inspiring books, including the famous ‘The Power of Positive Thinking’ describes Christmas in these words: "Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful."
This ‘softer and more beautiful world’ turned into a tragic mess in Asia exactly one day after Christmas on December 26, 2004. Ten years back Christmas occurred on a Saturday and the next day, December 26, was a Sunday, the Feast of the Holy Family. The tsunami that occurred on December 26th, the Feast of the Holy Family, left thousands and thousands of families completely or partially uprooted.
If a family was uprooted completely, it looked like a blessing, since all the members of the family were gone and no painful memories lingered. But there were thousands of other families where the tsunami had taken away some members while the rest were left in agony and despair. On the Feast of the Holy Family why should this happen? Is there anything soft or beautiful about the Christmas Season of 2004? Those were the questions left with us. The members of the Holy Family - Mother Mary, St Joseph and the Child Jesus - would have asked a similar question: Was there anything soft or beautiful about the First Christmas? Was there anything to celebrate about the Holy Family?

The history of the Feast of the Holy Family tells us that it was precisely at critical moments in history that this Feast was thought of.
The History: The feast of the Holy Family was more of a private devotion popularised by some religious congregations for many centuries. The Church made this feast more ‘official’ in the year 1921. The reason behind such a move, as I see, was the First World War. This war was over in 1918. One of the casualties of this war was the family. The tragic death of dear ones killed on the battlefield, orphaned children, destroyed ‘homes’… Wishing to infuse some hope in the hearts of people devastated by this war, the Church officially integrated the Feast of the Holy Family in the liturgical cycle.
The feast of the Holy Family as we have today is a gift of the Second Vatican Council which took place in the 60s. What was so special about the 60s? Although there was no major political war, people had to face other types of wars. The world was experiencing quite a few changes. One of the major crises was the ‘rebellion’ of the youth. Young people were very disillusioned with the way the world was shaping up. Some of them tried to set things right; many others tried to ‘escape’ reality, since it was too hard to face. Many of them sought peace and love outside families. The Church, in an attempt to restore family as the locus of a healthy Christian life, included the Feast of the Holy Family as part of the Octave of Christmas – the Sunday after Christmas. Thus, the history of this feast tells us that the Church was not a silent spectator to the destruction caused to the basic foundation of human society – namely, family – but made the family the locus of hope!

Something similar occurred during the tsunami that destroyed families in 14 Asian countries. Nothing soft and nothing beautiful about the tsunami in 2004 one would tend to say. But, wait… In the days and months and even years that followed, many soft and beautiful things did happen. They are still happening. Among the various incidents that I have read, one incident is etched deep in my mind and heart – the incident about Parameswaran and Sudamani of Nagapattinam. Here is an extract from the daily called ‘The Hindu’:

SEA OF LOVE: The tsunami-affected couple, K. Parameswaran and Sudamani of Nagapattinam, with their adopted children
Even as tsunami `swallowed' all their three children and washed away their happiness once and for all, it could not wipe out humanism and confidence from the minds of the couple, K. Parameswaran and Sudamani of Nagapattinam. The couple, suffering from irrevocable loss, adopted 16 child survivors of tsunami aged between three and 14 years.
Mr. Parameswaran's emotion-soaked outpouring of reactions moved a huge gathering. "It happened on my birthday," said Mr. Parameswaran. “First, my last son saw a giant wave, higher than many trees. I alerted my son to run. I could see my kid's two little legs moving at pace. In a few seconds, I could see thousands of bodies floating in water. I lost all my three children, my father and mother and 10 of my relatives from Karnataka”, he recalled.
"We have crores of rupees, but did not have a piece of cloth to cover my children's bodies before burial. With confidence instilled by my wife, we went to a fishermen hamlet near coastline the next day where many destitute children were roaming without parents. I have a bungalow without children. They have no parents and house. We brought four children home for providing shelter. Later, the number rose to 16," he said.

The News Minute website of December 4, 2014, carries a more recent article on Parameswaran and Sudamani with the title: He lost 3 children in the Asian Tsunami, today he is Appa to 37
“We never planned for this,” says Parameswaran, a central government employee of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, as he spoke about Nambikkai (Hope), a trust registered under the Juvenile Justice Act which has over the years taken in children orphaned by the tsunami. He began the trust to take care of three children. Every year since then, the numbers swelled; today Nambikkai is home to 37 children.

The tsunami plucked away three children of Parameswaran and Sudamani. But at the same time, it had planted many more children in their family. When we think of the Holy Family, we are also painfully aware that the incidents that happened around this family were not holy in any sense. They were asked to run for their life over night. The children in Bethlehem were massacred. Still, the Holy Family survived and this family opened its heart to include the whole human family. In this sense, we can say with some assurance: "Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful."

As we are reflecting on the 10th anniversary of the tsunami that devastated Asia, we are painfully aware of the tsunami of violence that destroys the world, over and over again. Due to this tsunami of violence, the problems of refugees and massacre of children continue unabated in the 21st century. Pope Francis, on the eve of Christmas this year, spoke over the phone with the refugees of Ankawa camp, near Erbil, Iraq. Over the telephone line, the Pope told refugees that he is “close to them with all of his heart” and assured them of his prayers. “You are like Jesus on the night of his birth when he had been forced to flee. You are like Jesus in this situation, and that means we are praying even harder for you. Dear brothers and sisters, I am very, very close to you with all of my heart. May the Lord caress you with His tenderness”

In his special message ‘Urbi et Orbi’ delivered on Christmas Day, Pope Francis expressed his special concern for children massacred around the globe, including the senseless shooting of school children in Peshawar, Pakistan on December 16.
“May Jesus save the vast numbers of children who are victims of violence, made objects of trade and trafficking, or forced to become soldiers; children, so many abused children. May he give comfort to the families of the children killed in Pakistan last week… My thoughts turn to all those children today who are killed and ill-treated, be they infants killed in the womb, deprived of that generous love of their parents and then buried in the egoism of a culture that does not love life; be they children displaced due to war and persecution, abused and taken advantage of before our very eyes and our complicit silence.
I think also of those infants massacred in bomb attacks, also those where the Son of God was born. Even today, their impotent silence cries out under the sword of so many Herods. On their blood stands the shadow of contemporary Herods. Truly there are so many tears this Christmas, together with the tears of the Infant Jesus.”

In the battle of Herod vs a helpless child, the child triumphed. That is the reason for us to celebrate! In the battle against tsunami, people like Parameswaran and Sudamani triumphed. That is the reason for us to celebrate!
We hope that in the battle against the tsunami of violence, good-willed persons like Pope Francis will speak up and the senseless violence will end. That will be a reason for us to celebrate!

The First Christmas… dirty and dangerous!

The Annunciation - Oil and Tempera Painting, The Mische Technique, 2005

4th Sunday of Advent – B cycle

Here is a story about a young professor who sat at his desk one evening working on the next day's lectures. His housekeeper had laid that day’s mail and papers on his desk, and he began to shuffle through them, discarding most to the wastebasket. He then noticed a magazine, which was not even addressed to him but had been delivered to his office by mistake. It fell open to an article titled "The Needs of the Congo Mission.” Casually he began to read when he was suddenly consumed by these words: "The need is great here. We have no one to work the northern province of Gabon in the central Congo. And it is my prayer as I write this article that God will lay His hand on one - one on whom, already, the Master's eyes have been cast - that he or she shall be called to this place to help us." Professor Albert Schweitzer closed the magazine and wrote in his diary: "My search is over." He gave himself to the Congo. That little article, hidden in a periodical intended for someone else, was placed by accident in Schweitzer's mailbox. By chance he noticed the title. It leaped out at him. Chance? No. It was one of God's surprises.
This was possible, not only because God came into the life of Albert, but Albert was ready to meet God. Since the mid-1890s Albert had formed the inner resolve that it was needful for him as a Christian to repay to the world something for the happiness which it had given to him, and he determined that he would pursue his younger interests until the age of thirty and then give himself to serving humanity, with Jesus serving as his example. The article about ‘Congo mission’ reached him when Albert was 30! Chance? No. It was God’s way of stamping his approval on the resolve of Albert Schweitzer.
Albert spent the next 7 years to the rigorous pursuit of medicine. He left for Africa and spent the rest of his life… 60 years, helping the poor and the sick in Africa. The invitation from God via the magazine, the response, the change of direction in Albert’s life – from Theology and Music to Medicine, the challenging life he faced for the rest of his life… all these point us towards the scene of the Annunciation that changed the life of a simple village girl, Maria!

As Christmas approaches, schools and parishes would enact the Christmas story. This story usually begins with the scene of the Annunciation, and then goes on to show the Visitation, the Nativity, Shepherds and the Magi…. all in a matter of half an hour. Usually children enact these scenes and hence they appear all the more lovely and heavenly! A few years back, when we were returning home after one such tableau, one of my friends suddenly posed this question: “Was the first Christmas this good?” This question was like a wake-up call!
What was the first Christmas like? Surely not such a happy, peaceful event. When history is transformed into pages in a book, we tend to remember the glorious moments of that history and tend to forget the real pain and misery of those events. Similarly, when reading the Gospels during our liturgical celebrations, our minds tend to ‘spiritualise’ these events. It is so easy for us to say at the end of the Gospel reading: “This is the ‘Good News’ of the Lord” and respond, “Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.” But, was it really ‘good news’ when this scene took place the very first time?

The original Christmas story was far from happy and holy. It was loaded with pain and misery. So many things worked against happiness and holiness. We shall consider only one aspect… namely, that Judea was an occupied territory. Army soldiers are not the best models of virtue, to say the least. The duty of army personnel, by definition, is to protect a country. But, unfortunately, there are soldiers who have joined the army for various other reasons. Such soldiers are a threat to common people. Women, especially young girls, who live around army camps, do not live! They die each day in fear. If people have to fear the soldiers of their own country, what can we say about soldiers from foreign lands? If we can talk to the people of Afghanistan or Iraq we would know what it means to live in country occupied by foreign troops.
This was the plight of Mary, who had to live through horrors enacted by Roman soldiers day after day… everyday. Not a day must have passed without Mary raising questions and prayers to God about their liberation. Her prayers, her questions were answered. God said, “I shall send my Son to save you. You will become the mother of my Son.” Mary wanted to escape the frying pan and God seemed to offer her the fire. God wanted her to become an unwed mother!
Mary knew full well what this meant. Sure death… death by being stoned! Mary must have witnessed such brutal murders. Especially, after the Roman occupation, quite a few young girls, raped by the Roman soldiers, must have faced such sentences and, hence, the frequency of such gory scenes must have increased, haunting Mary day and night. When Mary cried to God for liberation, God offered her an ‘impossible’ invitation. God invited her to become an unwed mother!

Most of us imagine the scene of the Annunciation in terms of holy light, soft music and Mary’s immediate ‘Yes’ to God. She would not have said an immediate “Yes, my Lord…” Much less would she have jumped up in joy to sing “The Magnificat”. She may have suffered sleepless nights to gather enough courage to say this ‘yes’ to God. Finally, she did say ‘yes’, relying totally on God and not thinking about all the earthly consequences… Here are the closing lines of today’s Gospel:
And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible." And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." (Luke 1: 35-38) It is the ‘let it be’ of Mary that made the whole scene of the Annunciation ‘good news’. Without that surrender of Mary, trusting only on God, this scene would be far from ‘good news’.

Mary’s ‘let it be’ was not the complete solution for all the problems; but the starting point of the salvation history. It required great courage and trust on the part of Mary to say this ‘let it be’. Instead of filling our hearts and minds on problems, let us become part of the solution. May Mother Mary teach us this courage and trust to overcome our personal troubles and the troubles of the world around us during this Christmas.

The Annunciation, by Kim Vandapool
