SABBATH… SYNOGOGUE…

Last week when I was talking about the miracles related to the widow of Nain and the lady bent double with infirmity (healed on a Sabbath), it occurred to me that it would be interesting to reflect on Jesus performing miracles on the Sabbath. Luke records the very first miracle of Jesus and quite a few other miracles as occurring on the Sabbath. In almost all of them, the miracles occur in the synagogue. Sabbath and synagogue… Working miracles on a Sabbath was scandalous enough. Jesus seems to be stretching his luck a bit too far by performing these Sabbath miracles in the synagogue... Was Jesus looking for trouble? inviting trouble? If Jesus wanted to heal only an individual, He could have easily performed these miracles on one-to-one basis, just Jesus and him or her. There are a few miracles done this way, where Jesus even tells the person not to talk about it. These Sabbath miracles, on the other hand, are not simply meant for the person alone. Jesus was bent on showing to his listeners, and, more especially, to the Scribes and the Pharisees that Sabbath was made for humans and not the other way around. For our reflection, I have chosen the miracle recorded in the sixth chapter of Luke. Jesus heals a man with a withered hand. Here is the passage from Luke:

LUKE 6: 6-11
On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shrivelled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." So he got up and stood there.
Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?"
He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was completely restored. But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Let’s begin our reflection on who were present in the synagogue and why… Jesus was present. Why? He was there to teach and to heal. There were people, mostly the poor and the sick people. Why? They were there to listen to Jesus and to get healed. If Jesus and the people alone were there, no drama and no interest… In any drama, we need a third point to create tension. We need villains. Enter the Pharisees and the teachers of the law. Jesus seems to have begun his ministry in full swing healing people on the Sabbath. But, this did not go well with the Pharisees and other religious leaders. So, they were looking for an opportunity to corner him. They did not need to wait long. They heard that Jesus was in the synagogue. What was more? They heard that a man with shrivelled hand was also spotted in the synagogue. What more could they ask for?

Here is a passage from Pastor Kent Crutcher who describes the situation better:
The opportunity was ripe. The opportunity for the Pharisees to achieve their goal. Their main objective: getting rid of Jesus. All the ingredients were in place. There was a man, and that man needed healing. There was Jesus. And of all days, it was the Sabbath!
"We have Jesus now, right where we want Him. If he doesn't heal the man, then the people will think He doesn't care. If He does heal the man, the people will think He's a Law-breaker. This is a good way to get rid of Jesus. We'll cut His influence in half and word will spread that He's a Law-breaker or He doesn't care about people. And we will look good again."

Everything seemed to fall in place for the coup. But, they had not done their homework well. They had underestimated Jesus’ intelligence. The gospel points out this lacuna… “But Jesus knew what they were thinking…” Jesus had sized them up. What Jesus does after this is a bit startling, a bit disconcerting… He calls the physically challenged person to come to the middle. An embarrassing moment, indeed!
Our present generation has improved a lot in treating physically challenged persons better. Even the nomenclature has changed over a period of time: Handicapped, disabled, physically challenged and now differently-abled… These days we are taught in so many ways not to even stare at a person with a physical infirmity. We are taught to integrate them into the human family without condescension. Such is our time and we should be happy about it. But, the Jewish community was far from it. Those with infirmity were considered sinners, cursed by God. If this was the case, then why did Jesus do this, embarrassing an infirm person to stand up in the middle of a group?
I am reminded of another event where the woman with haemorrhage is brought to the centre of the crowd. (Luke 8:41-48) On that occasion, Jesus could have easily left the woman alone. She did not want to draw any attention to herself. All she wanted to do was to slip into the crowd, touch only the hem of His garment and slip away quietly. All she wanted was only the hem, the fringe, not the centre. But, Jesus had other ideas. He did not want the woman alone to get healed… He wanted to heal the crowd too. That is why He brought her to the centre.
Jesus was doing the same here, in the synogogue. He wanted to heal not only the man with the withered hand but those around him… mainly, the religious leaders – the leaders who had come prepared to trap Jesus. Keeping the sick person in the middle, Jesus raises a question: "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?" The question is not directed to anyone in particular. But, it reaches home… home to those who wanted to question Jesus. Questioning the questioner… The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were floored. They could not answer Jesus. Luke is silent about this reaction, but the Gospel of Mark says that Jesus was angry with their silence (Mark 3: 4-5).
Jesus heals the person with the withered hand. He heals the people around. Did the Pharisees get healed? Unfortunately, no. The gospel says: But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.
Why were they angry to such an extent? I wish to discuss this next week. I shall try and present the side of the Pharisees and the law makers… They may have something to tell us, perhaps.
