SMALL MIRACLES SWARM AROUND US…

Sunbeams above green hills

Recently I received an email which thrilled me quite a bit. I felt as if I was a special person living in August 2010. Yes, the email gave me an information that August 2010 was a very special month since it had 5 Sundays, 5 Mondays and 5 Tuesdays. What was more? The email went on to say that such a coincidence would not be possible for the next 823 years. Naturally, I wanted to share this as one of my thoughts in ‘Thought for the Day’ programme in Vatican Radio.
Before elaborating on this unique moment of our life, I just wanted to check more details on this piece of information. When I google-seached for more information, there was a BLAST… my lofty thoughts came crashing down. The information was wrong! August 2010 has 5 Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, surely. But that this was a unique phenomenon, not to be repeated for the next 823 years, was a gross and faulty exaggeration. Here is an excerpt from the web:

The 823 years claim is false (and unfortunately, spreading like wildfire on Facebook and Twitter). August has 31 days, which is 4 weeks + 3 days. Hence there will always be 3 days of the week which repeat 5 times during the month. (We have 7 months in the year which have 31 days and all of them will have three consecutive days of the week occurring five times. For instance, last July we had 5 Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays)
The last time August had 5 Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays was not 800+ years ago, but only 6 -- in August 2004. Before that, it happened in 1999, and 1993. The next time it will happen is in 2021. It follows a 6-5-6-11 pattern.

Two days back another email gave me one more information on August 2010... this time, hopefully, a right information.
Two moons on 27 August - Greatest Event on Earth
You may be interested. Show two moons to children. Mark the date on your calendar. Let us hope the sky is not cloudy. This time translates to 11 pm CST (12 pm EST) in USA. Please pass it on. Let’s not miss this spectacle! Two moon on 27 August!
Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am IST. It will look like the earth has 2 moons.
The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again.

These two emails showed me clearly one of my basic tendencies… possibly a common human tendency, namely, that when something is trumpeted as wonderful, extraordinary, once-in-a-life-time-event etc., we tend to look at it more carefully. The month of August has come and gone so many times in my life; but this is the first time I have thought about this month so deeply.

In one of my earlier reflections, while talking about the miracles of Jesus, I have spoken of miracles that happen all the time in our lives, miracles that are ignored by us, miracles that are simply taken for granted… Many of us tend to look at a few EXTRAORDINARY miracles when pointed out by others, rather than myriads of ordinary miracles that swarm around us.
Psalm 23 talks of such very ordinary miracles. Today we begin the second verse of this Psalm, namely, “He makes me lie down in green pastures.” Green pastures… This gives us an occasion to talk of colours. All of us are aware of the warm and cool colours. The rainbow has a combination of all these colours. Of all the colours of the rainbow, the most soothing ones are blue and green.

While talking of this verse, Harold Kushner says: “God has coloured His world in predominantly calming colors, blue sky, green leaves, blue-green water, brown trees, colors that calm rather than excite. That may explain a phenomenon that has long puzzled me: Why are we so drawn to the mountains and the seashore when we go on vacation?... The answer, I think, is that God’s world, decorated in blue and green, calms us, gently bathing our eyes with quiet, low-intensity colors. We spend so much of our lives in a man-made environment, with its artificial lighting and artificial heating and cooling, bright neon signs and color television programs, that when we get a day off, a long weekend, a vacation, we instinctively feel the need to find our way to God’s world with its more restful palette.” (The Lord Is My Shepherd – Healing Wisdom of the Twenty-Third Psalm)

We don’t need to escape from our daily routine to feel this soothing, gentle colours or the gentle presence of God in seashores and green meadows. We can feel them right in the middle of our office. All we need to do is to close our eyes and enter this world… just for a few minutes.
Dear friends, while talking of this verse in my Bible Reflection over Vatican Radio, I ventured into a mini-meditation.
You can surely make an attempt at this ‘mini-meditation’. Just close your eyes and begin… Imagine a green meadow with tall grass… The gentle breeze that sweeps across this green meadow makes green waves of the swaying grass. The breeze has no special direction and hence the patterns of waves created are manifold. We can easily picture this in our minds. If we can do this just for a few minutes, it would have its calming effects, surely! While we are engaged in this mental picture, we can also hear the distant flute. Perhaps a shepherd is playing his flute from one corner of this meadow. He has come there with his sheep and he has made his sheep lie down in green pastures…
Green pastures… we shall continue our journey through the green pastures next week!
