Let’s begin today’s reflections with a legendary leader – Alexander the Great. When the emperor Alexander the Great was crossing the Makran Desert on his way to Persia, his army ran out of water. The soldiers were dying of thirst as they advanced under the burning sun. A couple of Alexander's lieutenants managed to capture some water from a passing caravan. They brought some to him in a helmet. He asked, “Is there enough for both me and my men?” “Only you, sir,” they replied. Alexander then lifted up the helmet as the soldiers watched. Instead of drinking, he tipped it over and poured the water on the ground. The men let up a great shout of admiration. They knew their general would not allow them to suffer anything he was unwilling to suffer himself. (http://www.cbcisite.com/)
We are aware that legends are mixed with exaggerations. Still, even if half of what is spoken about or written about Alexander is true, then he was really a great leader. Last Friday (May 13) Tamil Nadu as well as some other states in India had declared the list of elected leaders. Right now it is only party time in these states; but when the dust settles down, we would be left with the serious question as to whether the people have chosen the best leaders… Only time will tell! Will there be anecdotes about our present leaders which would at least remotely resemble those of Alexander? I wonder!
This Sunday gives us an opportunity to reflect on leaders. The Fourth Sunday of Easter is called the Good Shepherd Sunday. This is also The World Day of Prayer for Vocations. May 15th is also the International Day of Families. Families, Vocations and Leadership are three themes that support one another.
Let us begin with the International Day of Families. 1994 was the International Year of the Family and the U.N. assigned May 15th as the International Day of Families. Every year a theme is proposed for this day. For 2011, the proposed theme is: "Confronting Family Poverty and Social Exclusion". Last year it was: "The Impact of Migration on Families Around the World." Families do face lots of challenges these days and if family bonds are not strong, they tend to disintegrate. Families are the nursery of Vocations and character-formation. If the Church and the world are looking for great leaders, they surely need to look into the possibility of creating safe, secure families first. Safety and Security are two rare commodities of the present day world and world leaders are struggling to provide them. Getting rid of persons like Bin Laden does not automatically guarantee safety and security.
In today’s Gospel, taken from John 10, Jesus talks of how he, the Good Shepherd, would provide safety and security to his sheep. It is interesting to note that this discourse of Jesus is not given to the people, but to the Pharisees. If we look at chapter 10 as a sequence of chapter of 9 of John, we see that Jesus is trying to rectify the distorted image the Pharisees have of him. The curing of the visually handicapped person triggered a hot debate and the Pharisees branded Jesus as a sinner and as an agent of the devil. (Cf. John 9:24; 10:20-21)
This discourse of Jesus defines three main qualities of a good shepherd:
Calling the sheep by name.
Leading them.
Laying down one’s life for the sheep.
Being called by name is one of my favourite themes found in the Bible. Every time I reflect on this theme, my mind automatically tends to think of how our present generation is marked more by numbers than by names. Our identity is tied up very much with numbers, especially for those living in the so-called advanced countries. If a person living in one of these advanced countries loses her / his wallet with all the “cards”, it would almost erase one’s identity. It is scary to think of how much our identity is tied up to plastic cards and numbers. As against this, the idea of being called by name must define our identity and make each of us unique.
Tony Campolo loves to tell the story of a particular census taker who went to the home of a rather poor family in the mountains of West Virginia to gather information. He asked the mother how many dependents she had. She began, "Well, there is Rosie, and Billy, and Lewella, Susie, Harry, and Jeffrey. There's Johnny, and Harvey, and our dog, Willie." It was then that the census taker interrupted her aid said: "No, ma'am, that's not necessary. I only need the humans." "Ah," she said. "Well, there is Rosie, and Billy, and Lewella, Susie, Harry, and Jeffrey, Johnny, and Harvey, and...." But there once again, the census taker interrupted her. Slightly exasperated, he said, "No, ma'am, you don't seem to understand. I don't need their names, I just need the numbers." To which the old woman replied, "But I don't know them by numbers. I only know them by name."

Jesus would call each of his sheep by name and lead them to green pastures. Legend has it that Napolean knew all his soldiers by name and not simply by their designated number. I guess that a phenomenal memory alone is not enough to register names in one’s mind. True involvement with each person guarantees this. This is the hallmark of a true leader – being truly interested and involved with each individual!
True interest and involvement may demand from a true leader the ultimate test of his leadership, namely, to risk one’s life for the followers, as illustrated by Alexander. This is what Jesus says: “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - just as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay down my life for the sheep.” (John 10:14-15)
Knowing the sheep, calling them by name, leading them and laying down one’s life… all of them are tied up with true leadership. Since this is also the Day of Prayer for Vocations, we shall round off our reflections with an inspiring anecdote of a priest: A soldier dying on a Korean battle field asked for a priest. The Medic could not find one. A wounded man lying nearby heard the request and said, “I am a priest.” The Medic turned to the speaker and saw his condition, which was as bad as that of the other. “It will kill you if you move,” he warned. But the wounded chaplain replied. “The life of a man’s soul is worth more than a few hours of my life.” He then crawled to the dying soldier, heard his confession, gave him absolution and the two died hand in hand.

மாவீரன் அலெக்சாண்டர் தன் படையுடன் மக்ரான் என்ற பாலை நிலத்தைக் கடக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது. கொளுத்தும் வெயிலும், எரிக்கும் மணலும் வீரர்களின் உயிரைக் குடிக்கும் தீயாய் மாறின. அலெக்சாண்டரும் தாகத்தால் துடித்தார். அவர் தாகத்தைத் தணிக்க, இரு தளபதிகள் நீண்ட தூரம் நடந்து, தங்கள் கவசத்தில் சிறிது தண்ணீர் கொண்டு வந்தனர். அலெக்சாண்டர் அத்தளபதிகளின் விசுவாசத்தைப் பாராட்டினார். பின்னர், அவர்களிடம், "வீரர்களுக்கும் தண்ணீர் கிடைக்க வழி உண்டா?" என்று கேட்க, அவர்கள், "இல்லை மன்னா. உங்கள் ஒருவருக்கு மட்டுமே தண்ணீர் கிடைத்தது." என்று சொன்னார்கள். வீரர்களுக்குத் தண்ணீர் இல்லாதபோது, தனக்கும் தண்ணீர் தேவையில்லை என்று கவசத்தில் இருந்த நீரை மணலில் ஊற்றினார் அலெக்சாண்டர். சூழ இருந்த வீரர்கள், தங்கள் தலைவனைப் பெருமையுடன் எண்ணி, ஆர்ப்பரித்தனர்.
தன்னைப் பின் தொடர்பவர்களின் இன்ப, துன்பங்களில்... முக்கியமாக, அவர்களின் துன்பங்களில் தன்னையே இணைத்துக் கொள்பவரே உண்மைத் தலைவர். இந்தியாவில், தமிழ் நாட்டிலும், இன்னும் பிற மாநிலங்களிலும் தேர்தல் முடிவுகள் வெளியாகியுள்ளன. நல்ல தலைவர்களைத்தான் நாம் தேர்ந்தேடுத்திருக்கிறோமா என்ற கேள்வி மனதில் எழுந்துள்ளது. இந்தக் கேள்விக்கு விடை, வருகிற மாதங்களில் தெரியும். ஆடுகளை அரவணைத்துக் காக்கும் ஆயனைப் போன்ற உண்மையான தலைவர்களைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்க நமக்குத் தாய் திருச்சபை இன்று ஒரு வாய்ப்பைத் தந்துள்ளது.
நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறென்று அழைக்கப்படும் இந்த ஞாயிறு, இறையழைத்தலின் ஞாயிறென்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. அதுமட்டுமல்ல. மே மாதம் 15ம் தேதி அகில உலகெங்கும் குடும்பங்களின் நாள் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. குடும்பத்தில் நல்ல முறையில் உருவாகும் குழந்தைகள் இறையழைத்தலை ஏற்று, தலைவர்களாக, மக்களை வழிநடத்தும் ஆயர்களாக உருவாக முடியும். இவை அனைத்தையும் இணைத்துப் பார்க்க இறைவன் நமக்குத் தந்திருக்கும் இந்த நாளுக்கு முதலில் அவருக்கு நன்றி சொல்வோம்.
இன்றைய நற்செய்தியாக நமக்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ள பகுதி யோவான் நற்செய்தியின் 10ம் பிரிவிலிருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த நற்செய்தியின் 9ம் பிரிவில் பார்வை இழந்த ஒருவரை இயேசு குணமாக்கும் நிகழ்ச்சி கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அந்த நிகழ்ச்சியின் இறுதியில் எழும் ஒரு காரசாரமான விவாதத்தில் இயேசுவை ஒரு பாவி என்று முத்திரை குத்துகின்றனர் பரிசேயர்கள். அவர்களுக்குப் பதில் சொல்லும் வகையில் இயேசு தன்னை ஒரு நல்ல ஆயனாகச் சித்தரிக்கிறார். அது மட்டுமல்ல, ஆடுகளுக்குத் தீங்கு விளைவிக்கும் திருடர், கொள்ளையர், கூலிக்கு மேய்ப்பவர் இவர்களுடன் தன்னை ஒப்புமைப்படுத்தியும் பேசுகிறார் இயேசு. உண்மையான ஆயனின் குணங்களை இயேசு விவரிக்கும் ஒரு சில வரிகளை இப்போது கேட்போம்:
யோவான் 10: 3-4
அவர் தம்முடைய சொந்த ஆடுகளைப் பெயர் சொல்லிக் கூப்பிட்டு வெளியே கூட்டிச் செல்வார். தம்முடைய சொந்த ஆடுகள் அனைத்தையும் வெளியே ஓட்டி வந்தபின், அவர் அவற்றிற்கு முன் செல்வார். ஆடுகளும் அவரைப் பின்தொடரும். ஏனெனில் அவரது குரல் அவற்றுக்குத் தெரியும்.
நூற்றுக்கணக்காய் ஆடுகள் இருந்தாலும், அவை ஒவ்வொன்றுக்கும் பாசமாய் பெயரிட்டு அழைப்பதும், தன்னைப் பின் தொடரும் ஆடுகளுக்கு முன்சென்று வழிகாட்டுவதும் ஆயனின் முக்கிய குணங்கள். ஒவ்வொரு மனிதருக்கும் மிக நெருக்கமான, உயர்ந்த அடையாளம் அவரது பெயர்... ஒருவரைப் பெயரிட்டு அழைக்கும்போது உருவாகும் உறவு, பிணைப்பு உணர்ந்துபார்க்க வேண்டிய ஓர் உண்மை. பல இல்லங்களில், செல்லப் பிராணிகளுக்கும் பெயர்கள் தருவது, உறவை வலுப்படுத்த மேற்கொள்ளப்படும் ஒரு முயற்சிதானே...
மக்கள் கணக்கெடுக்கும் ஓர் அலுவலர் ஓர் இல்லத்தலைவியைச் சந்தித்த கதை நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. கணக்கெடுக்க வந்தவர் அந்த இல்லத்தலைவியிடம், "வீட்டில் எத்தனை பேர்?" என்று கேட்டார். இல்லத்தலைவி அவரிடம், "வீட்டில் டெய்சி, டேவிட், சூசன், வில்லியம், ஹாரி, ஜெப்ரி, எல்லாரும் இருக்கிறார்கள்... இன்னும், நாய்க்குட்டி டாமியும், பூனைக் குட்டி ரோசியும் உள்ளன." என்று ஒரு பட்டியலைத் தந்தார். கணக்கெடுக்க வந்தவர், "நாய், பூனை இவையெல்லாம் வேண்டாம். வீட்டில் எத்தனை பேர் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்பதைச் சொல்லுங்கள்." என்றார். மீண்டும் அந்தப் பெண், "வீட்டில் டெய்சி, டேவிட், சூசன், வில்லியம், ... " என்று ஆரம்பித்தார். கணக்கெடுக்க வந்தவர் இடைமறித்து, "அம்மா, எனக்கு இந்தப் பெயரெல்லாம் தேவையில்லை. எனக்கு வேண்டியதெல்லாம் எண்ணிக்கை." என்றார். இல்லத் தலைவி அவரிடம், "எனக்கு அவர்கள் பெயர்கள் மட்டும்தான் தெரியும். அவர்களது எண்ணிக்கை தெரியாது." என்றார். ஒவ்வொருவரையும் பெயரிட்டு அழைப்பதில் கிடைக்கும் உறவும், நிறைவும் எண்ணிக்கையில் கிடைக்காது.
ஆனால், நாம் வாழும் காலத்தில் எண்ணிக்கைக்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ள மதிப்பை நாம் அனைவரும் அறிவோம். நமது வாழ்வைப் பல அடையாள அட்டைகளாக மாற்றி, ஒவ்வொன்றுக்கும் ஓர் எண்ணைக் கொடுத்து நமது முக்கியமான அடையாளங்கள் எண்ணிக்கையில் சிக்கிக் கொள்வதை நாம் அனைவரும் உணர்ந்து வருகிறோம். முதல் தர நாடுகள் என்று முன்னேற்றம் கண்டிருக்கும் நாடுகளில் ஒருவரது வாழ்வே அட்டைகளிலும், அவற்றில் உள்ள எண்களிலும் புதைந்து வருவதைப் பார்க்கலாம். இந்த அட்டைகள் தொலைந்து விட்டால், அவரது எண்களை அவர் மறந்து விட்டால், ஒருவர் தன் சுய அடையாளத்தையே இழக்கும் ஆபத்து உண்டு. நம் குழந்தைகள், நண்பர்கள் இவர்களது பெயர்கள் மறக்கப்பட்டு அவர்களது செல்லிடப் பேசியின் எண், அவரது கிரெடிட் கார்ட் எண் என்று எண்களே நமது நினைவையும் மனதையும் நிறைக்கப்போகும் காலம் மிக நெருங்கி வருகிறதோ என்ற பயம் எனக்கு. பெயர் சொல்லி அழைத்து உறவுகளை வளர்க்கும் வழிகளை, ஆழப்படுத்தும் வழிகளை நாம் கண்டு கொள்ள, நல்லாயன் நமக்கு உதவிகள் செய்ய வேண்டும்.
தலைவனைத் தொடரும் தொண்டர்கள் ஆயிரமாய்ப் பெருகினாலும், அவர்களை எண்ணிக்கையாகக் கருதாமல், ஒவ்வொருவரையும் தனி மனிதர்களாய் எண்ணி, அவர்களது பெயர் சொல்லி அழைக்கும் தலைவனே, உண்மைத் தலைவன். நெப்போலியன் தன் வீரர்கள் அனைவரின் பெயர்களையும் நினைவில் வைத்து, அவர்களைப் பெயர் சொல்லியே அழைத்ததாக வரலாறு சொல்கிறது. இப்படி ஆயிரமாயிரம் பெயர்களை நினைவில் பதிப்பதற்கு அசாத்திய அறிவுத் திறமை இருந்தால் மட்டும் போதாது. தொண்டர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் மதித்து, அவர்கள் மீது ஈடுபாடு கொள்ளும் மனமும் இருந்தால்தான் பெயர்கள் மனதில் பதியும்.
பெயர் சொல்லி பாசமாய் அழைத்தல், முன்னே சென்று ஆடுகளை வழி நடத்துதல் ஆகிய நற்பண்புகளுடன் ஆயனின் மற்றொரு முக்கியமான குணத்தையும் யோவான் நற்செய்தி 10ம் பிரிவில் இயேசு குறிப்பிடுகிறார். இந்தப் பகுதி நமக்கு இன்றையத் திருப்பலியில் தரப்படவில்லை எனினும், நல்லாயனையும், இறை அழைத்தலையும் சிந்திக்கும்போது, இந்த முக்கியமான குணத்தையும் குறிப்பிடாமல் இருக்க முடியாது.
யோவான் 10: 14-15
நல்ல ஆயன் நானே. தந்தை என்னை அறிந்திருக்கிறார்; நானும் தந்தையை அறிந்திருக்கிறேன். அதுபோல நானும் என் ஆடுகளை அறிந்திருக்கிறேன்; என் ஆடுகளும் என்னை அறிந்திருக்கின்றன. அவைகளுக்காக எனது உயிரைக் கொடுக்கிறேன்.
நல்லாயனின் ஒரு முக்கியமான குணம்... ஆடுகளுக்காகத் தன் உயிரையேத் தருவது. எந்த ஒரு சூழலிலும் தன்னைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்காமல், மற்றவர்களையே எண்ணி வாழ்வதைப் போன்ற ஓர் உயர்வான வாழ்வு உலகில் இல்லை. ஆபத்து, துன்பம் என்று வரும்போது தன்னைக் குறித்து ஒருவர் கவலை கொள்வதும், தன்னைக் காத்துக் கொள்ள முயல்வதும் வெகு சாதாரண மனித இயல்பு. அந்த இக்கட்டானச் சூழல்களிலும் தன்னைப்பற்றிய கவலை இல்லாமல், அடுத்தவரைப்பற்றி கவலைப்படும் மனம், மலைபோல் உயர்ந்த மனம். மனித வரலாற்றில் தங்களையே மறந்து, பிறருக்காக வாழ்ந்த பலரைப்பற்றி கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறோம்.
நல்லாயன், இறையழைத்தல் என்ற இரு எண்ணங்களையும் இணைத்து சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ள ஒரு கதை இது.. வெறும் கதை அல்ல, உண்மைச் சம்பவம். கொரியாவில் நடந்து வந்த போரின் உச்சகட்டம். போரில் காயப்பட்டு, உயிருக்குப் போராடி வந்த ஒரு வீரன், தான் இறப்பதற்கு முன், ஒரு குருவைச் சந்திக்க வேண்டுமென்ற தன் ஆவலை வெளியிட்டான். அவனுக்கு மருத்துவ உதவிகள் செய்தவர் திகைத்தார். இந்தப் போர்க்களத்தில் குருவுக்கு எங்கே போவது? என்று அவர் தடுமாறிக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது, அந்த வீரனுக்கு அருகில் மரணத்துடன் போராடிக் கொண்டிருந்த மற்றொரு வீரன், "நான் ஒரு குரு" என்று தன்னையே அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார். அவரது நிலையைக் கண்ட மருத்துவர், "நீங்கள் அசையாதீர்கள். அசைந்தால், உங்கள் உயிருக்குப் பெரும் ஆபத்து." என்று அந்த குருவிடம் எச்சரித்தார். அதற்கு அந்த குரு, "நான் வாழப்போகும் இந்த ஒரு சில மணித்துளிகளை விட, என் நண்பரின் ஆன்மா மிகவும் முக்கியம்." என்று சொன்னபடி, தன்னிடம் எஞ்சியிருந்த சக்தியை எல்லாம் திரட்டி, தரையோடு தரையாக ஊர்ந்து வந்தார் அந்த குரு. சாகும் நிலையில் இருந்த அந்த வீரனின் இறுதி நேரத்தில் அவனுக்கு ஒப்புரவு அருட்சாதனத்தை வழங்கினார். அந்த வீரனும், குருவும் அமைதியாக இறந்தனர்.
மேமாதம் 15ம் தேதி குடும்பங்களின் அனைத்துலக நாள். நமது குடும்பங்கள் இறையழைத்தலை வளர்க்கும் நாற்றங்காலாய், தோட்டமாய், பள்ளிக்கூடமாய் இருக்க இறையருளை வேண்டுவோம். பள்ளிப் படிப்பு, கல்லூரி படிப்பு ஆகியவற்றை முடித்து விட்டு, வாழ்வில் சில முக்கிய முடிவுகளை எடுக்கக் காத்திருக்கும் இளையோரை இன்று சிறப்பாக இறைவனின் திருப்பாதம் கொணர்வோம். நல்லாயனாம் இயேசுவைப் போல் இறை அழைத்தலை ஏற்று, மக்கள் பணிக்குத் தங்களையே அளிக்க முன் வரும் இளையோரை இறைவன் வழிநடத்த வேண்டுமென்று இறையழைத்தல் ஞாயிறன்று மன்றாடுவோம்.
