Change for the better! மாற்றங்கள் நிறைந்த மறுவாழ்வு

Word association is a fun game which stimulates one’s brain cells. I shall begin with a string of words starting with C. Contrition, Conversion, Conviction and Commitment. John the Baptist talks about these in today’s Gospel. John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. (Mark 1:4) What is given in this line set me thinking in those ‘C’ words. Before we begin our journey through those C words, a quick thought about the opening line of today’s Gospel.

Mark begins his Gospel with a solemn opening line: The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. (Mark 1:1) Naturally, my mind began expecting the story of Jesus as in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. But, Mark goes on to talk about John the Baptist who in turn preaches on baptism of repentance and forgiveness. On a superficial level the opening line and the subsequent lines on John the Baptist, repentance and forgiveness don’t seem congruent. But, on a deeper analysis we can see that ‘the gospel of Jesus Christ’ is precisely what John the Baptist preached, namely, repentance and forgiveness. I am trying to expand this ‘good news’ through my C words.

Contrition, Conversion, Conviction and Commitment. Each of them is a gem, valuable and precious. But when strung together they become a priceless jewel. They seem to have a logic about them. Let me try to explain this logic with an example.

Suppose I have wronged another person… (I can hear you, friend! Why suppose this? I have wronged quite a few persons in truth… But that is not the point now!) I feel sorry for what I have done. This is contrition. Feeling sorry is a good sentiment. It is a gem. But, if I just stay in my feeling-sorry-state alone, not much good can come out of it. I need to get converted, meaning, I need to get back to the person I have wronged to ask for his/her pardon. Contrition leading to conversion… great! No, it is still not great. This act of mine should lead me to some sort of conviction that I should not repeat this again. This conviction leads me to a commitment to set things right not only with this one person I have wronged but with everything wrong in my life. So, contrition, conversion, conviction and commitment… are gems stung together into a priceless jewel. When they follow one another in some order, there would be another C word… CHANGE! Change within me and around me… Change for the better!

Such changes have occurred in human history many, many times. I wish to turn your attention to the change brought about by Shane Paul O'Doherty, a former IRA member. Shane Paul O’Doherty joined the Irish Republican Army when he was 15 and became a leading IRA bomber for over five years. The Volunteer – A Former IRA Man’s True Story (published in 2008) is a racy and exhilarating autobiography of O’Doherty’s involvement in the IRA, his incarceration, and his reinvention of himself as one of the first advocates for the peace process.

O’Doherty was convicted of a letter bomb campaign in London and spent over 14 years in prison. 

Wracked by guilt of his actions that resulted in injuries to innocent citizens, O’Doherty wrote letters

For 300 years the people in Ireland have lived in the past. For 350 years, really, all they have done is remember the past, taking revenge on one another.  But slowly, one by one, on both sides, people began to repent, to look, not to the past, but to the future. One of the first to do so was a man named Shane O'Doherty. He was the first former IRA member to come out publicly for peace. Twenty years ago he was sent to jail for mailing letter bombs. At his trial as a terrorist for the IRA, he had to sit and listen to people tell what it was like to open those letters. Fourteen people testified against him, all innocent victims, many of them mutilated because of what he had done. He said it was sitting in that court, face to face with people who had been harmed by his actions that his conversion began. But it was completed in prison, in his cell, as he was reading scripture. First he experienced Jesus' love for him. Then he experienced Jesus' requirement of him. He knew he had to change. When he got out of prison, O'Doherty started to talk about building a new future in Ireland, instead of just repeating the past. He found that his life was now being threatened by his former colleagues. But he continued to do it, because, he said, "I believe that one person is able to make a difference just by talking about peace, just by making his witness. It begins in any nation, in any community, with one person, then another, and then another, saying, ‘I'm going to accept the future that God is giving to us, rather than simply repeating the past.’"

Contrition, conversion, conviction, commitment… all these are evident in Shane’s life and he has CHANGED himself and, up to a point, Ireland. Come to think of it, Shane and John the Baptist do have some similarities. Both of them wished to bring about the liberation of their people. As Shane was a member of the IRA trying to bring about a drastic change in Ireland, John the Baptist too, according to some Bible scholars, may have been a member of one of the revolutionary groups of his times, trying to bring about the liberation of Israel from the Roman oppression. Shane received his grace of conversion and commitment in prison while John received his grace in the wilderness. Both were not satisfied with their personal change alone, but wished to change the society around them… and succeeded up to a point!

Advent is a time of grace for each one of us to get converted, convinced and become committed to change – change ourselves and the society around us!

திருவருகைக் காலத்தின் இரண்டாம் ஞாயிறான இன்று மாற்கு நற்செய்தியின் தொடக்கம் நமக்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ளது. “கடவுளின் மகனாகிய இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவைப் பற்றிய நற்செய்தியின் தொடக்கம்:” என்று பிரமாதமாக ஆரம்பமாகும் இந்த முதல் வரியைக் கேட்கும்போது, எக்காளம் ஒலித்து, பறை அறிவித்து சொல்லப்படும் முக்கியச் செய்தியைப் போல் இது ஒலிக்கின்றது. தொடர்ந்து இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவைப் பற்றிய நற்செய்தி சொல்லப்படும் என்று நம்மை எதிர்பார்க்க வைக்கிறது. ஆனால், எவ்வித முன்னறிவிப்பும் இல்லாமல், திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்படுகிறார். அவர் சொல்லும் முதல் வார்த்தைகளும் பாவ மன்னிப்பு, மனமாற்றம் என்ற போக்கில் அமைந்துள்ளன. மேலோட்டமாகப் பார்த்தால், இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவைப் பற்றிய நற்செய்தி என்று மாற்கு ஆரம்பித்ததற்கும் அவர் தொடர்ந்து சொல்வதற்கும் தொடர்பில்லாமல் இருப்பதைப் போல் தோன்றுகிறது. ஆனால், சிறிது ஆழமாகச் சிந்தித்தால், மன்னிப்பு மனமாற்றம் ஆகியவைகளே இயேசு கிறிஸ்து உலகிற்குக் கொண்டு வந்த நற்செய்தி என்பதைப் புரிந்து கொள்ளலாம்.

மனவருத்தம், மன்னிப்பு, மனமாற்றம், மறுவாழ்வு... என்ற மந்திரச் சொற்களில் நம் மனதைக் கட்டிப் போடுகிறது இன்றைய நற்செய்தி. 'பாவ மன்னிப்படைய மனம் மாறித் திருமுழுக்கு - அதாவது, மறுவாழ்வு - பெறுங்கள்' என்று திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் அன்று பாலை நிலத்தில் முழங்கியச் சொற்கள், திருச்சபையின் அனைத்து கோவில்களிலும் இந்த ஞாயிறன்று முழங்குகின்றன.

மனவருத்தம் கொள்வது,

மன்னிப்புப் பெறுவது,

மனமாற்றம் அடைவது,

மறுவாழ்வில் நுழைவது...

இவைகளே திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் சொல்லவந்த நற்செய்தி, இயேசு கிறிஸ்து இவ்வுலகிற்குக் கொண்டுவந்த நற்செய்தி. இவை ஒவ்வொன்றும் மதிப்புள்ளவை. இவை ஒவ்வொன்றையும் தங்க வளையங்களாக நாம் கற்பனை செய்து பார்க்கலாம். இந்தத் தங்க வளையங்கள் தனித்து நின்றால் ஓரளவு மதிப்பு உண்டு. ஆனால், இவ்வளையங்கள் அனைத்தும் இணைந்து ஒரு சங்கிலியாக உருவானால், இவற்றின் மதிப்பு பலமடங்கு உயரும். அற்புதமான மாற்றங்கள் உருவாகும். ஓர் எடுத்துக்காட்டுடன் இந்தச் சங்கிலித் தொடரின் உயர்வை விளக்க முயல்கிறேன்.

உதாரணமாக, நான் இன்னொருவருக்கு எதிராகத் தவறு செய்துவிட்டேன் என்று வைத்துக் கொள்வோம். நான் செய்த தவறை உணர்ந்து மனம் வருந்துகிறேன். தவறை உணர்ந்து வருந்துவது நல்ல பண்புதான். ஒரு தங்க வளையம்தான். சந்தேகமில்லை. அத்தோடு நான் நின்றுவிட்டால், பயனில்லை. நான் தவறு இழைத்தவரிடம் என் மனவருத்தத்தைச் சொல்லி, மன்னிப்பு பெற வேண்டும். மன்னிப்பு என்பதும் அழகான ஒரு தங்க வளையம்தான். ஆனால், மன்னிப்பு பெற்றதோடு நின்றுவிட்டால், மீண்டும் பயனில்லை. தவறுகள் தொடர்வதற்கு வாய்ப்புக்கள் இருக்கும். எனவே, மன்னிப்பைத் தொடர்ந்து நான் மனமாற்றம் அடைய வேண்டும். நான் மனமாற்றம் அடைந்துள்ளேன் என்பது எப்படி வெளிப்படும்? என் வாழ்வில் மாற்றங்கள் உருவாக வேண்டும், என்னைச் சார்ந்தவர்கள் வாழ்விலும் நான் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்க வேண்டும். இந்த மாற்றங்கள் என்னிலும், என்னைச் சுற்றிலும் புதியதொரு வாழ்வை உருவாக்கும்.

மனவருத்தம், மன்னிப்பு, மனமாற்றம், மாற்றங்கள் நிறைந்த மறுவாழ்வு... அந்த மறுவாழ்வில் மீண்டும் சில தவறுகள் நேரும்போது மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை மனவருத்தம், மன்னிப்பு, மனமாற்றம் என்று இந்த சங்கிலி தொடர்ந்து கொண்டே இருக்க வேண்டும். இப்படிப்பட்ட அழகான ஒரு சங்கிலித் தொடரால் நம்மைக் கட்டிப் போட இயேசுவும், திருமுழுக்கு யோவானும் இவ்வுலகிற்கு வந்தனர். இவர்களை, இவர்கள் கொண்டு வந்த நற்செய்தியை, அந்தத் தங்கச்சங்கிலியைத் தகுந்த முறையில் ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதற்காகவே திருச்சபை நமக்கு இந்தத் திருவருகைக் காலத்தை அளித்துள்ளது.

மனவருத்தம், மன்னிப்பு, மனமாற்றம், மறுவாழ்வு... இவை நான்கும் இணைந்து உலகில் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்கிய பல வரலாற்று நிகழ்வுகளை நாம் கேள்விப் பட்டிருக்கிறோம். அவற்றில் ஒன்று அயர்லாந்தில் நிகழ்ந்த மாற்றம்.

பிரித்தானிய அடக்கு முறைக்கு எதிராக இந்தியா விடுதலைக்குப் போராடியதுபோலவே, அயர்லாந்தும் போராடியது. இந்தப் போராட்டங்களின் உச்சக் கட்டத்தில் Irish Republican Army (IRA) என்ற புரட்சிக் குழு ஒன்று உருவானது. இந்தப் புரட்சிக் குழுவில் ஒருவராக தன் 15வது வயதில் சேர்ந்தவர் Shane Paul O'Doherty. பலவகை வெடிகுண்டுகள் செய்வதில் தன் அறிவுத் திறன், ஆற்றல், இளமை அனைத்தையும் செலவிட்டார் Shane. பிரித்தானிய அரசுக்கு எதிராக இவர் காட்டிய வெறுப்பும், எதிர்ப்பும் கடித வெடிகுண்டுகளாக வடிவெடுத்தன. பல அப்பாவி ஆங்கிலேயக் குடும்பங்களுக்கு இவர் கடித வெடிகுண்டுகளை அனுப்பி, அவர்களது நிம்மதியையும் குடும்ப வாழ்வையும் சிதைத்தார்.

இவரது குற்றம் வெளிச்சத்திற்கு வந்தபோது, இவர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டார். வழக்கு மன்றத்தில் இவருக்கு எதிராக 14 பேர் சாட்சி சொல்ல வந்திருந்தனர். அவர்களில் பலர் இவர் அனுப்பிய கடித வெடிகுண்டுகளால் தங்கள் பார்வையை, கைகளை அல்லது நெருங்கிய ஓர் உறவை இழந்தவர்கள். தன்னால் சிதைக்கப்பட்ட அவர்களை நீதி மன்றத்தில் சந்தித்தது தன்னை அதிகம் பாதித்தது என்று Shane தான் எழுதிய புத்தகத்தில் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.  அங்கு ஆரம்பமானது இவரது மன வருத்தமும், மன மாற்றமும்.

தொடர்ந்து இவர் 14 ஆண்டுகள் சிறையில் இருந்தபோது, தன்னால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் தனித்தனியே கடிதங்கள் அனுப்பினார். இம்முறை கடித வெடிகுண்டுகளுக்குப் பதில், அக்கடிதங்கள் அவர் மனதிலிருந்து எழுந்த வருத்தம் மன்னிப்பு கோரிக்கை இவைகளைச் சுமந்து சென்றன. கடித வெடிகுண்டுகள் மூலம் புரட்சியை உருவாக்கலாம் என்று Shane எண்ணினார். ஆனால், அவர் உருவாக்கியதேல்லாம் வேதனைகளே. இப்போது அவர் அனுப்பிய இந்தக் கடிதங்கள் வேறொரு வகையில் புரட்சியை ஆரம்பித்து வைத்தன. தன்னால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்களிடம் இருந்து நேரில் பெற முடியாத மன்னிப்பை இறைவனிடம் வேண்டினார். மனமாற்றம் பெற்றார். ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் சிறையில் விவிலியத்தை வாசித்தார். 14 ஆண்டுகள் கழித்து, Shane விடுதலை அடைந்தார்.

சிறையை விட்டு அவர் வெளியேறியபோது, ஒரே ஒரு தீர்க்கமான எண்ணத்துடன் வெளியேறினார்... சிறையில் தான் அடைக்கப்பட்டபோது தன் மனதைத் திறந்து உள்ளே நுழைந்த இறைவன், தன் வாழ்வில் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்கியதைப் போல், வெறுப்பென்ற சிறைக்குள் தன்னையே பூட்டி வைத்திருக்கும் அயர்லாந்து சமுதாயத்திலும் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்க வேண்டும் என்ற தீர்மானத்துடன் Shane சிறையிலிருந்து வெளியேறினார். அயர்லாந்து மாற்றம் அடைய வேண்டுமென்றால், பிரித்தானியர்களின் அடக்கு முறையால் ஏற்பட்ட கடந்த காலக் காயங்களிலேயே அந்நாடு வாழாமல், எதிர்காலத்தை உருவாக்க என்ன செய்யமுடியும் என்பதைச் சிந்திக்க வேண்டும் என்று Shane உணர்ந்தார். இந்த உண்மையை அவர் பேச ஆரம்பித்தார். வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தாலும், கிடைக்காவிட்டாலும் இதைப் பற்றி அவர் பேசி வந்தார்.

இவரது எண்ணங்கள் பலரை கவர்ந்தன. அயர்லாந்து மக்களிடையே மாற்றங்கள் உருவாக ஆரம்பித்தன. அதே நேரம், இவர் அடைந்த மாற்றம், இவர் அயர்லாந்தில் உருவாக்க நினைத்த மாற்றம் ஆகியவற்றை இவரது பழையப் புரட்சிக் குழுவின் தோழர்கள் விரும்பவில்லை. அவர்கள் பலவழிகளில் இவரை மௌனமாக்க முயன்றனர். ஆயினும், Shane தன் நிலைப்பாட்டிலிருந்து மாறாமல், அவர்களை எதிர்க்கத் துணிந்தார். அவர் கொண்ட நிலைப்பாட்டை தன் சுயசரிதையில் அவர் இவ்விதம் கூறுகிறார்:

"'இறந்த காலத் தவறுகளை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் செய்வதற்குப் பதில், இறைவன் தரும் எதிர்காலத்தை நான் நம்பிக்கையோடு ஏற்றுக் கொள்கிறேன்' என்று ஒருவர் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தால் போதும்... அந்த எண்ணம் சிறிது சிறிதாக அடுத்தடுத்த மனிதரை பற்றிக்கொள்ளும். எந்த ஒரு நாட்டிலோ, அல்லது சமுதாயத்திலோ தனி மனிதர் ஒருவர் அடையும் மாற்றம்தான் அடுத்தவர்களை ஒவ்வொருவராக மாற்றுகிறது."

இதுவே Shane Paul O'Dohertyன் தாரக மந்திரமானது. இதுவே இன்று திருமுழுக்கு யோவானிடமிருந்தும் நாம் கேட்கும் செய்தியாக உள்ளது.

Shaneக்கும் திருமுழுக்கு யோவானுக்கும் இடையே பல ஒப்புமைகளை நாம் காண முடியும். இருவருமே தங்கள் நாடு விடுதலை பெற வேண்டுமென்ற வேட்கையில், முதலில் புரட்சி வழிகளைச் சிந்தித்தவர்கள். பின்னர் இறைவனால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டு, மன மாற்றம் பெற்று தங்கள் வாழ்வையே மாற்றியவர்கள். மற்றவர்களையும் மாறும்படித் தூண்டியவர்கள்.

இறைவனை எதிர்பார்த்து காத்திருக்கும்  இந்தத் திருவருகைக் காலத்தில் நாமும் இறைவனால் முழுமையாக ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட வேண்டும் என்று வேண்டிக்கொள்வோம். திருமுழுக்கு யோவானைப் போல், Shane Paul O'Dohertyஐப் போல் இறைவனால் முழுமையாக ஆட்கொள்ளப்படுவதற்கு, மனவருத்தம், மன்னிப்பு, மனமாற்றம், மறுவாழ்வு ஆகிய படிகற்களில் ஏறும் துணிவும், பக்குவமும் பெற இறையருளை இறைஞ்சுவோம்.
