Triple
Festival (Mupperum Vizhaa) has been in vogue in India
For the
first day of January, we don’t need to discover or invent reasons. There are
already more than three, in fact, four reasons that call for celebration.
It is a Quadruple Festival. The first reason: this is the beginning of
another year in the Gregorian calendar. This is accepted as the New Year Day in
most countries. We also have various other calendars that specify different
dates as the New Year Day – the Chinese, the Tamil, the Telugu… etc. It would
surely help the human spirit if each day of the year is celebrated as ‘first
days’. That way we shall have 365 days to celebrate. This year we shall have
366 days, since this is a leap year that comes once every four years.
The U.N.
has assigned 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives. The U.N.
Secretary General Ban Ki Moon said, “Cooperatives are a reminder to the
international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability
and social responsibility.” Cooperation can surely begin from our individual
families and then extend to the international family. 2012 is also observed as
the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. Cooperation
and Sustainable Energy for All are achievable goals for the human family
and very sublime reasons to celebrate.
The second
reason to celebrate January 1st is that this is the eighth day
after Jesus’ birth. On this day, according to the Gospel of Luke (Lk. 2: 21),
the child was taken to the temple for circumcision and he was given the name
Jesus. The Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus is shifted to January 3rd.
The third
reason is that the first day of the year is dedicated to praying for world
peace. It was introduced in 1967 and was inspired by the encyclicals ‘Pacem
in Terris’ and ‘Populorum Progressio’ of Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul
VI. The World Day of Peace has often been a time when Popes make magisterial
declarations relevant to the social doctrine of the Church. Paul VI and John
Paul II have each year made important statements on the United Nations, human
rights, women's rights, labour unions, economic development, the right to life,
international diplomacy, peace in the Holy Land ,
globalization and terrorism.
Pope
Benedict XVI has chosen the theme "Educating Young People in Justice and
Peace” for the celebration of the 45th World Day of Peace on January 1, 2012.
The theme focuses on an urgent need in the world today: to listen to and enhance
the important role of new generations in the realization of the common good,
and in the affirmation of a just and peaceful social order where fundamental
human rights can be fully expressed and realized. The Message is addressed
especially to parents, families and all those involved in the area of education
and formation, as well as to leaders in the various spheres of religious,

Although
world peace is still a distant dream, we can surely celebrate this dream and
pray fervently that this dream may be realised especially among the youth. Let
us give a chance for the youth to live in Peace!
The fourth
and final reason is that this is the Feast of Mar y,
the Mother of God – the official Feast of January 1. Of all the four reasons,
this is given as the prime reason by the Catholic Church for a Solemn Feast. Of
all the four reasons, this one seems the most intriguing. The very reason the
Church gives as a reason for celebration would have been a reason for
condemnation in Mar y’s time. She
became a Virgin Mother defying not only natural laws, but also the laws of her
Jewish society. This is an example to tell us that we can discover or invent
reasons to celebrate life against all odds.
Christmas
and New Year is a peak time for sharing greetings. Millions of greetings fill
our communication lines. We greet those we love and admire. Here is a greeting
to Mar y, the Mother of God, in the
form of a letter:
Dear
Mother Mar y,
We, your
children, pen these few lines to show you how much we love and admire you for
being such a great Mother. On the very first day of the calendar year we wish
to think of you as the Mother of God and celebrate it. But, I was just
wondering whether it was possible for you to celebrate this very same fact –
becoming the Mother of God. For you, the days following your meeting with Angel
Gabriel must have been quite fearful and uncertain.
The land
in which you lived is still surrounded by fear and uncertainty. We realise that
it is not easy for people to live in war zones – especially for young girls.
You lived as a young lady in Roman occupied territory. You must have spent days
and nights in constant fear.
Today we
celebrate your Motherhood and we have even built magnificent churches in your name. Some of these churches are
marvels in marbles and granite stones. But, if the people of your times had
learnt that you had become a mother before your wedding, they too would have
used stones… to kill and bury you. We take pride in building thousands of
churches in your name since you had built yourself into a temple of God

has William Wordsworth written these lovely lines about you:

whose virgin bosom was uncrost
With the
least shade of thought to sin allied;
Woman!
above all women glorified,
Our tainted
nature's solitary boast;…
Not only
Wordsworth, but thousands upon thousands of artists have been inspired to sing
your praises through their masterpieces of art. You are such an inspiration for
all of us, Mom! It is so fitting that you have taken the pride of place on the
very first day of the year. May you have many more special days in our New
Year!

முப்பெரும்விழா என்பது இந்தியாவில், சிறப்பாக, தமிழகத்தில்
அடிக்கடி கொண்டாடப்படும் ஒரு நிகழ்வு. மூன்று காரணங்கள் இருந்தால் போதும்...
முப்பெரும் விழாதான். அப்படி காரணங்கள் சரிவர அமையவில்லையெனினும், ஏதாவதொரு
காரணத்தைக் கண்டுபிடித்து, முப்பெரும் விழா எடுக்கிறோம். சனவரி
முதல் தேதியான இன்று நாம் விழா கொண்டாடுவதற்கு நான்கு காரணங்கள் உள்ளன.
எனவே, இந்த
நாளை நாம் நாற்பெரும்விழா என்று கூறலாம்.
கிரகோரியன் நாள்காட்டியின் படி, புதியதோர்
ஆண்டின் முதல்நாள் இன்று. இதை ஆங்கிலப் புத்தாண்டு என்று நாம் வழக்கமாக
அழைக்கிறோம். உலகின் பல நாடுகளில், பல கலாச்சாரங்களில் 2012ம் ஆண்டு
இன்று துவங்குகிறது. கொண்டாட்டம் என்ற முறையில் டிசம்பர் 31 இரவு ஆரம்பித்த
ஆர்ப்பாட்டங்கள் இன்னும் ஓயவில்லை.
ஜப்பானில் ஆரம்பித்த இந்தக் கொண்டாட்டங்கள் ஒவ்வொரு மணி நேரமாக ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டிலும்
இன்னும் தொடர்கிறது. அத்துடன் 2012ம் ஆண்டுக்கு மற்றுமொரு சிறப்பு உண்டு. இது
நான்கு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு ஒரு முறை வரும் லீப் ஆண்டு. நெட்டாண்டு என்று இதனை
அழைக்கிறோம். இவ்வாண்டில் கூடுதலாக ஒரு நாள் சேர்க்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. வழக்கமாக லீப்
ஆண்டு என்று சொன்னதும், மனதில் 366 நாட்கள் தோன்றும், ஒலிம்பிக்
போட்டிகள் நினைவுக்கு வரும். நான்கு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு ஒருமுறை வருவதால், இந்த
ஆண்டு சிறப்பான ஆண்டுதானே! நாற்பெரும் விழாவின் முதல் காரணம் இது.
புத்தாண்டுடன் தொடர்புடைய பல அம்சங்கள் உள்ளன. அவற்றில்
ஒன்று நாம் எடுக்கும் நல்ல வாக்குறுதிகள். இன்று முதல் நாம் செய்ய வேண்டியவை, செய்யக்
கூடாதவை,
செய்ய விரும்புகின்றவை என்று இந்த வாக்குறுதிகள் பலவகையில் அமையும்.
உள்ளுவதெல்லாம் உயர்வுள்ளல் என்பது நம் வாக்குறுதிகளில் முதல் இடம் பெற்றால், இவ்வுலகம்
எவ்வளவோ உயரும்.
ஐ.நா. பொதுஅவை ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டையும் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட
கருத்துக்கென குறித்து வைக்கும். 2012ம் ஆண்டினை அகில உலக கூட்டுறவு ஆண்டென
ஐ.நா. அறிவித்துள்ளது. இந்த அறிவிப்பைத் தொடர்ந்து, ஐ.நா. பொதுச்
செயலர் பான் கி மூன் சொன்ன வார்த்தைகள் நம் கவனத்தில் பதிய வேண்டியவை.
"சமுதாய அக்கறையுடன் பொருளாதார முன்னேற்றம் காண முடியும் என்பதற்கு
கூட்டுறவு முயற்சிகள் சிறந்ததொரு எடுத்துக்காட்டு" என்று பான் கி மூன்
கூறியுள்ளார்.

நமது குடும்பங்களில், கூட்டும்
உறவும் அதிகமாக வேண்டும். அதேபோல், உலக நாடுகளிடையிலும் கூட்டும், உறவும்
வளர வேண்டும் என்று இந்த கூட்டுறவு ஆண்டில் இறைவனிடம் நம் செபங்களை எழுப்புவோம்.
இயேசு என்ற குழந்தை பிறந்தபின் வரும் எட்டாம் நாள் இது.
குழந்தை இயேசுவுக்கு விருத்தசேதனம் செய்து, இயேசு என்ற
பெயர் தரப்பட்ட நாள். (லூக்கா 2: 21) பிறந்த குழந்தைக்குப் பெயரிடுவது ஒரு முக்கிய
கொண்டாட்டம் தானே. இது நமது நாற்பெரும் விழாவின் இரண்டாவது காரணம்.
உலக அமைதிக்காக செபிக்கும்படி திருத்தந்தை நம்
அனைவருக்கும் சிறப்பாக அழைப்பு விடுக்கும் நாள் சனவரி முதல் தேதி. இது மூன்றாவது
காரணம். 2012ம் ஆண்டுக்கென திருத்தந்தை 16ம் பெனடிக்ட் வெளியிட்டுள்ள
செய்தியில் இளையோரை மையப்படுத்தியுள்ளார். இளையோர் அமைதியை அனுபவித்து மகிழ நாம்
அனைவரும் தகுந்த முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று திருத்தந்தை அழைப்பு
விடுத்துள்ளார். உலக அமைதி என்பது ஒரு
கனவு தான் என்றாலும், அந்தக் கனவையும் நாம் கொண்டாட வேண்டாமா?
இவை எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலாக, திருச்சபை
இன்று ஒரு மாபெரும் விழாவைக் கொண்டாட நமக்கு அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறது. 'மரியா, இறைவனின்
தாய்' என்பதே
அம்மாபெரும் விழா. இன்றைய
விழாவைக் கொண்டாட மிக மையமாக உள்ள நான்காவது காரணம் இது.
இந்த நான்கு காரணங்கள் இன்றி, உலகில் Haiti, Sudan, Brunei போன்ற
ஒரு சில நாடுகள் இன்று விடுதலை நாளைக் கொண்டாடுகின்றன. Cubaவில் புரட்சியின் வெற்றி நாள் இது. Tanzaniaவில் மரம்
நடும் நாள் இது. ஆரஅமர சிந்தித்தால், இந்நாளைக் கொண்டாட இன்னும் பல
காரணங்களை நம்மால் கண்டு பிடிக்க முடியும். உலக அளவில், நாடுகள்
அளவில் காரணங்கள் இருப்பதுபோல், சொந்த வாழ்விலும் இந்நாளைக் கொண்டாட
எத்தனையோ காரணங்கள் இருக்கலாம்.
காரணம் எதுவும் இல்லையெனினும் கொண்டாட முடியுமா? முடியும்.
முயல வேண்டும். கொண்டாடுதல் என்பது வெளிப்படையாகத் தோரணங்கள் கட்டி, மேளதாளங்கள்
முழங்கி கொண்டாடப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதில்லை. ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் நமக்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ள
ஒரு புதிய பரிசு என்பதை உணர்ந்து நமக்குள் நாமே சிறு சிறு கொண்டாட்டங்களை
மேற்கொள்வது நம் வாழ்வைக் கூடுதல் அழகாக்கும்.
ஆங்கிலப் புத்தாண்டு, தமிழ்
புத்தாண்டு, தெலுங்குப் புத்தாண்டு, சீனப்
புத்தாண்டு என்று ஒவ்வொரு கலாச்சாரமும் நமக்குப் புதிய ஆண்டுகளைச் சுட்டிக்
காட்டும் வரை காத்திருக்காமல், நாமே
ஒவ்வொரு நாளையும் புதிய நாளாக, புதிய ஆண்டாக, புதிய
ஆரம்பமாகக் கொண்டாட முயற்சிகள் எடுப்பது நமக்கு நல்லது.
இந்த நாற்பெரும் விழாவில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள நான்கு காரணங்களையும்
குறித்து பல்வேறு சிந்தனைகளை மேற்கொள்ளலாம். மரியா இறைவனின் தாய் என்ற கருத்தை
மட்டும் இன்று நாம் சிறிது ஆழமாகச் சிந்திக்க முயல்வோம். கிறிஸ்மஸ்
புத்தாண்டு காலத்தில் நமக்கு நெருங்கியவர்கள், நம்மில் நல்ல
தாக்கங்களை உருவாக்கியவர்களுக்கு வாழ்த்துக்கள் அனுப்புகிறோம். வாழ்த்து மடல்கள், கடிதங்கள், மின்னஞ்சல்கள், தொலைபேசி
அழைப்புக்கள் என்று நமது வாழ்த்துக்களைப் பரிமாற எத்தனையோ வழிகளையும்
பயன்படுத்துகிறோம். மரியாவுக்கு வாழ்த்து மடல் அனுப்ப நமது திருப்பலி பொருத்தமான
ஒரு நேரம். அவருக்கு ஒரு மடல் எழுதி நம் எண்ணங்களை, வாழ்த்துக்களைச்
சொல்ல முயல்வோம்:
எங்கள் அன்பிற்கும் மதிப்பிற்கும் உரிய மரியன்னையே,
நாங்கள் துவக்கியிருக்கும் 2012ம் ஆண்டில் நீர் எம்மோடு
வாழ்ந்தால் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்று கற்பனை செய்து பார்க்கிறோம். ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும்
புத்தாண்டு நாளன்று இறைவனின் தாயான உமக்கு நாங்கள் விழா எடுக்கிறோம். ஆனால், இறைவனின்
தாய் ஆக நீர் அழைக்கப்பட்டதை உம்மால் கொண்டாட முடிந்ததா? அல்லது
அந்த அழைப்பு உம்மை துன்பத்தில் திண்டாட வைத்ததா?
நீர் அன்று வாழ்ந்த போது உமது நாடு உரோமைய ஆதிக்கத்தில்
துன்புற்றது. இன்றும் நீர் வாழ்ந்த அப்பகுதியில் எந்நேரமும் போர் மேகங்கள்
சூழ்ந்துள்ளன. போர்சூழ்ந்த பூமியில் வாழ்வது யாருக்குமே எளிதல்ல. அதிலும்
முக்கியமாக உம்மைப் போன்ற இளம்பெண்களின் நிலை எவ்வளவு ஆபத்தானது என்பதை இன்னும்
இந்த உலகம் பல கொடூரங்களின் வழியாக எங்களுக்கு நினைவுபடுத்திய வண்ணம் உள்ளது.
நீர் இறைவனின் தாயானதற்காய் நன்றி கூறி, பெருமைபட்டு
கற்களால் எழுப்பிய கோவில்களில் உம்மைப் பீடமேற்றி நாங்கள் இன்று வணங்குகிறோம்.
நீர் வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில், திருமணம் ஆகாமல் இறைவனின்
தாயானதற்காய் உமக்குக் கற்களால் சமாதி எழுப்பியிருப்பார்கள் என்பதையும்
உணர்கிறோம். கண்ணால் காண முடியாத இறைவனை உள்ளத்தால் கண்டு, அவரை
மட்டுமே நம்பி, உமக்குள் அவரைச் சுமக்க, உமக்குள்
அவருக்குக் கோவில் கட்ட நீர் சம்மதித்ததால், உம் பெயரில்
நாங்கள் இன்று கோவில்கள் கட்டுகிறோம்.
கருவில் கடவுளைச் சுமந்தது முதல், கல்வாரியில்
அவரைச் சிலுவைப் பலியாய் தந்தது வரை உமது மகனால் நீர் அடைந்தது பெரும்பாலும்
வேதனைகளே அன்றி நிம்மதி அல்ல. வாழ்ந்த நாட்கள் பலவும் வசைகளையும், வலிகளையும்
மட்டும் அனுபவித்த உமக்கு, கடந்த இருபது நூற்றாண்டுகளாய்
கிடைத்துள்ள வாழ்த்துக்கள் வானுயர உம்மை உயர்த்தியுள்ளன.
கடந்த இருபது நூற்றாண்டுகள் உலகில் பிறந்த, இனியும்
பிறக்கப் போகும் ஒவ்வொரு மனித உயிரும் உம்மை ஏதோ ஒரு வகையில் சந்தித்துள்ளனர், இனியும்
சந்திப்பார்கள் என்பதை நாங்கள் உறுதியாகச் சொல்லலாம். அத்தனை புகழ் பெற்றவர் நீர்.
உலகில் வரலாறு படைத்துள்ள பல கோடி பெண்கள் மத்தியில், நீர்
உண்மையில் பேறு பெற்றவர்.
"கறைபட்ட எமது குலத்தின் தனிப்பெரும் பெருமை
நீர்" (Woman!
above all women glorified,Our tainted nature's solitary boast) என்று
ஆங்கிலக் கவிஞர் William
Wordsworth உம்மைப்பற்றிச் சொன்னது உமது புகழ்கடலில் ஒரு துளியே.
உமது புகழ்கடலில் நாங்களும் மூழ்கி மகிழ்கிறோம், பெருமைப்
படுகிறோம். ஆண்டின்
முதல் நாள் உமக்கு விழா எடுப்பது மிகவும் பொருத்தமே. புலர்ந்திருக்கும் இந்த
ஆண்டில் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் உம்மை எண்ணி மகிழ எங்களுக்கு வாய்ப்புக்களை உருவாக்கித்
தாரும்!
வாழ்க மரியே! வாழ்க எம் அன்னையே!
