Powerful Healing
Jane was a
new recruit in the school. She had worked just for a week there. On Saturday afternoon
the Principal called her and gave her an additional assignment. She was asked
to go to the nearby hospital and teach mathematics to a boy who was bed-ridden
there. On Sunday, Jane went there a bit reluctantly. When she saw the boy on
the bed, she was utterly shocked. The boy had sustained third degree burns in a
fire accident and was fighting for life.
Teaching mathematics
to this kid? This must be a cruel joke, Jane thought. Still, she had to comply
with the wish of the Principal. So she began to teach him. She made a valiant
attempt to hide her shock and tears and continued teaching him for 30 minutes.
Then she said good-bye to him promising to return the next Sunday. On her way
home, she had made a list of excuses she would offer to her Principal for not
taking this assignment next time.
The next
Sunday, however, she found herself going back to the hospital. She just wanted
to see the kid and be of some comfort to him… Surely no mathematics this time!
At the entrance of the hospital, she met a lady who was introduced to her as
the mother of the boy with severe burn injuries. The lady politely asked Jane,
“Are you the one who taught my son mathematics last Sunday?” Jane felt like
running away. She knew that no one in her proper sense would do such a thing.
“I am sorry about this… I had to oblige my Principal and so…” Jane mumbled. The
lady grabbed Jane’s hands. Her eyes were brimming with tears… “You don’t know
how much you have helped him and us” the mother said. Jane was stunned by these
words. She had done something wonderful? The mother continued: “Till last
Sunday my son had given up on his recovery. He had refused to eat and refused
to take medicines. But, after your mathematics lessons, he is completely a
different person. He keeps saying to me… ‘If my school has sent a teacher to
teach me mathematics, then they are sure that I would be back to school soon’.
Your mathematics lessons have given him a fresh lease of life. His recovery
this past week has surprised the medical staff here. Thank you so much for
doing this.” As the lady was speaking, Jane could hardly hold back her tears…
Dear
Friends, I have narrated this story in some detail just to make us understand a
key idea – an idea that has very close connection to our Sunday Readings today…
namely, the process of healing. What is the main reason for one’s healing?
Taking medicines, undergoing surgical interventions, do not guarantee automatic
cure. The cure begins from within a person, from his or her belief that a cure
is possible. This belief can be initiated from hundreds of outside sources,
known or unknown… like a pilgrimage taken to Lourdes
or the Holy Land , or like the lessons in
mathematics given to the boy who was saying goodbye to this world. Without this
inner belief, healing becomes difficult and, in many cases, impossible. In the
first reading today we hear the anguished cry of one who had lost his belief in
getting restored to health:
Job 7:
1-4, 6-7
Job
said: "Has not man a hard service upon earth, and are not his days like
the days of a hireling? Like a slave who longs for the shadow, and like a hireling
who looks for his wages, so I am allotted months of emptiness, and nights of misery
are apportioned to me. When I lie down I say, 'When shall I arise?' But the
night is long, and I am full of tossing till the dawn. My days are swifter than
a weaver's shuttle, and come to their end without hope. Remember that my life
is a breath; my eye will never again see good.
Verse 5
from this verse is omitted in today’s reading. This verse is a specific
reference to the health conditions of Job: “My flesh is clothed with worms
and dirt; my skin hardens, then breaks out afresh.” (Job 7:5)
This
passage echoes the sentiments many of us have expressed in many painful situations.
Two ideas from this passage caught my attention. The first one is that Job
talks of one of the most common experience for most of us. When pain fills
one’s life, the first things that take leave of us are… food and sleep - the
night is long, and I am full of tossing till the dawn. The second striking
aspect of this passage is the different symbols Job has used to describe his
desperate situation… hireling, weaver’s shuttle, breath. We too use many
symbols to describe our life, especially when we are filled with pain. We think
of symbols like the uprooted tree, a boat tossed about in the stormy sea or a
dry leaf swept away in whirlwind etc.
To continue
with this symbolic language, one can compare pain to quicksand. When we are
caught in quicksand we need to look for assistance from outside, especially
from someone who is standing on firm ground. Instead of this, most of us turn
our attention to the quicksand and get more panicky. This panic sets in motion
a series of actions (in the case of health… more medicines and more
consultations) by which we get more entangled and submerged in the sand.
Although Job’s words here are the cry of a person caught in the quicksand of
pain, he ultimately grabs the hands of God and reaches the firm rock of
salvation.
Christ
offers this helping hand in today’s Gospel. This passage from Mark (1: 29-39) is
the continuation of the last Sunday’s Gospel. In this Gospel passage, once
again, three things caught my attention. First, Jesus cures on the Sabbath Day.
If we browse through the four Gospels, Jesus cures many persons on the Sabbath
Day. Here are some of these miracles of healing:
The man with a demon (Mark 1:21-26)
Peter's mother-in-law (Luke 4:38-39)
The man with a withered hand (Matthew 12:9-13)
The bent-over woman (Luke 13:10-16)
The man with dropsy (Luke 14:1-5)
The crippled man at the Pool of Bethesda
The man born blind (John 9:1-14)
Any type of
work was forbidden on the Sabbath Day. For Jesus, healing was not a ‘work’ but
a natural human activity like his eating and sleeping. Moreover, to free a
human person from the bondage of evil, any rule can be broken, affirmed Jesus.
The second
aspect of this passage is that the whole city was gathered in front of Simon’s
house. As we said at the beginning, a person’s healing begins with the belief
of getting healed. We believe that God heals us; but God cannot heal us without
our consent. We need to approach God for our healing as the people thronged
around Jesus.
The third
aspect of this passage is the way in which Jesus healed the people around him
without any fuss. In many of these instances, Jesus made specific requests to
the healed persons to keep it secret. In today’s Gospel, we see him silencing
even the evil spirits who acknowledged his power. Doing good requires no
trumpets.
We beg of God for three special graces today:
- That
we or, someone close to us who need healing, develop the belief that we
can be healed and will be healed.
- That
more and more of us get involved in the ministry of healing in different
capacities. The world needs lots of healing…
- That
we are not hampered by rules and regulations especially when we are
involved in the healing ministry… That we are able to affirm boldly that
Sabbath is made for human beings and not vice versa.
Healing is a Choice – Cover
அந்த ஊர் பள்ளியில் ஓர் இளம் பெண் புதிதாக வேலைக்குச் சேர்ந்தார். ஒரு வாரம் சென்றபின், பள்ளியின் நிர்வாகி அவரை அழைத்து, கூடுதலாக ஒரு பணியை அவருக்குக் கொடுத்தார். வாரத்தில் ஒரு நாள் அவர் அருகில் இருந்த மருத்துவமனைக்குச் சென்று அங்கு அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் ஒரு சிறுவனுக்குக் கணக்குப் பாடம் சொல்லித் தர வேண்டும் என்பதே அந்தப் பணி. நிர்வாகி சொன்னதற்கு மறுப்பு சொல்ல முடியாமல், அந்தப் பெண் அடுத்த நாள் மருத்துவ மனைக்குச் சென்றார். படுக்கையில் கிடந்த அந்தச் சிறுவனைப் பார்த்ததும் அவருக்குப் பெரும் அதிர்ச்சி.
ஒரு தீ விபத்தில் உடலெங்கும் வெந்துபோய் படுத்துக் கிடந்தான் அந்தச் சிறுவன். இவனுக்கு கணக்குப் பாடம் சொல்லித் தர வேண்டுமா என்று அந்த இளம் பெண்ணின் மனம் தடுமாறியது. இருந்தாலும், இவ்வளவு தூரம் வந்துவிட்டோமே என்பதால், அவனுக்கு பாடம் சொல்லித் தர ஆரம்பிதார். வேதனையில் முனகிக் கொண்டிருந்த அந்தச் சிறுவனைப் பார்க்கவும் தைரியம் இல்லாமல் எதோ ஒரு வகையில் சமாளித்து, அவனுக்குப் பாடம் சொல்லித் தந்தார் அந்த இளம்பெண். மீண்டும் அடுத்த ஞாயிறு வருவதாகச் சொல்லி புறப்பட்டார். உடலெல்லாம் எரிந்து, உயிருக்குப் போராடிக் கொண்டிருந்த ஒரு சிறுவனுக்குக் கணக்குப் பாடம் சொல்லித் தந்தது அவருக்கே வேதனையாக இருந்தது. அடுத்த ஞாயிறு ஏதாவது சாக்குபோக்கு சொல்லி தப்பித்துக் கொள்ளலாம் என்று எண்ணியபடியே வீட்டுக்குத் திரும்பினார்.
இருந்தாலும், அடுத்த ஞாயிறு வந்தபோது, அந்த இளம்பெண் அந்தச் சிறுவனைப் பார்க்க எண்ணினார். அவனுக்குப் பாடம் சொல்லித் தரவில்லையென்றாலும், அவனைப் பார்க்க வேண்டும்போல் தோன்றியது. அவர் அங்கு சென்றபோது, மருத்துவமனை வாசலிலேயே அந்தச் சிறுவனுடைய அம்மா அந்த இளம்பெண்ணைச் சந்தித்தார்.
"நீங்கள்தான் என் மகனுக்கு போன வாரம் கணக்கு சொல்லித் தந்தீர்களா?" என்று கேட்டார். உயிருக்குப் போராடும் ஒரு சிறுவனுக்கு கணக்கு சொல்லித்தந்தது
எவ்வளவு பைத்தியக்காரத்தனமான செயல் என்பதை அந்தத் தாய் தன்னிடம் சொல்லப் போகிறார் என்று எதிர்பார்த்து, அந்த இளம்பெண் பயந்தார்.
"கணக்குப் பாடம் சொல்லித் தரவேண்டும் என்று மேலிடத்திலிருந்து
உத்தரவு வந்ததால்தான் நான் அப்படிச் செய்தேன்..." என்று தயங்கி, தயங்கி அந்த இளம் பெண் சமாதானம் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தார்.
அந்தத் தாய் இளம்பெண்ணின் கைகளை இறுகப் பற்றிக் கொண்டார். அவர் கண்களில் கண்ணீர் பெருக்கெடுத்தது. "நீங்கள்
எவ்வளவு பெரிய உதவி செய்துள்ளீர்கள்
என்று உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது." என்று அந்தத் தாய் சொன்னதும் இளம்பெண்ணுக்கு
ஒரே ஆச்சரியம். அந்தத் தாய் தொடர்ந்தார்: "நீங்கள்
சென்ற ஞாயிறு வருவதற்கு முன், என் மகன் தான் உயிர் பிழைக்கமாட்டோம் என்று அவனே தீர்மானித்து விட்டான். எனவே, உண்ண மறுத்தான், மருந்து சாப்பிட மறுத்தான். ஆனால், நீங்கள் கணக்குப்பாடம் சொல்லித்தந்த நாளில் இருந்து என் மகனிடம் நல்ல மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்பட்டன. 'எனக்கு கணக்குப் பாடம் சொல்லித் தர ஓர் ஆசிரியரை என் பள்ளி அனுப்பியுள்ளது என்றால், நான் கட்டாயம் மீண்டும் பிழைத்தெழுந்து
பள்ளிக்குத் திரும்புவேன் என்று என் பள்ளியில் உள்ளவர்கள் நம்புகிறார்கள் என்றுதானே அர்த்தம்!' என்று என் மகன் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்து விட்டான். நீங்கள் வந்து சென்ற நாளில் இருந்து தான் பிழைத்துக் கொள்வோம் என்ற அசைக்க முடியாத நம்பிக்கை என் மகனுக்குப் பிறந்துவிட்டது. இந்த ஒரு வாரத்தில் அவனிடம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள மாற்றங்களைக் கண்டு டாக்டர்களே ஆச்சரியத்தில் இருக்கிறார்கள். எல்லாம் நீங்கள் செய்த அற்புதம்." என்று அந்தத் தாய் கண்ணீரோடு சொல்லச் சொல்ல, அந்த இளம்பெண்ணின் கண்களிலும் கண்ணீர் வழிந்தது. இந்த இளம் பெண்ணின் அனுபவத்தை இவ்வளவு விவரமாக நான் கூற ஒரு முக்கிய காரணம் உண்டு. அந்தக் காரணமும் நாம் இன்று சிந்திக்கும் ஞாயிறு வாசகங்களுடன் தொடர்புடையது.
நமது நோய்கள் குணமாவதற்கு காரணங்கள் என்னென்ன? மருந்து, மாத்திரை, மருத்துவ சிகிச்சை இவைகளால் மட்டும் ஒருவர் குணமாக முடியாது. குணம் பெறுவோம் என்ற நம்பிக்கை ஒருவர் மனதில் உதிப்பதுதான் அவர் குணம் பெறுவதற்கான முதல் படி. அந்த நம்பிக்கை ஒருவர் மனதில் தோன்றுவதற்கு எத்தனையோ வழிகள் உண்டு. இவற்றில் எதிர்பாராத வழிகளும் பல இருக்கும். தீக்காயங்களுடன்
போராடி, மனம் வெறுத்து மரண வாயிலை நெருங்கி விட்ட அந்தச் சிறுவனுக்கு கணக்குப்பாடம் சொல்லித் தரவந்த ஆசிரியர் குணமாகும் வழியை அவனுக்குக் காட்டவில்லையா? அதுபோல...
இந்த நம்பிக்கை இல்லாதபோது, குணம் பெறுவது கடினமாகிப் போகிறது. பல வேளைகளில் இயலாமலும் போகிறது. நம்பிக்கையற்ற நிலையில் நமக்குள் உருவாகும் மன அழுத்தங்களை
இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம் நமக்குக் காட்டுகிறது. யோபு நூலிலிருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்ட இந்த வாசகம் துன்பங்களால் நொறுங்கிப்போன ஒருவரது உள்ளத்திலிருந்து
எழும் அவலக் குரலாய் ஒலிக்கிறது.
யோபு 7: 1-4, 6-7
மண்ணில் வாழ்வது மனிதருக்குப் போரட்டந்தானே? அவர்களின் நாள்கள் கூலியாள்களின் நாள்களைப் போன்றவைதாமே? நிழலுக்கு ஏங்கும் அடிமை போலவும், கூலிக்குக் காத்திருக்கும் வேலையாள் போலவும், வெறுமையான திங்கள்கள் எனக்கு வாய்த்தன; இன்னல்மிகு இரவுகள் எனக்குப் பங்காயின. படுக்கும்போது எப்போது எழலாம் என்பேன்! இரவோ நீண்டிருக்கும்; விடியும்வரை புரண்டு உழல்வேன். என் நாள்கள் தறியின் ஓடுகட்டையினும் விரைந்தோடுகின்றன; அவை நம்பிக்கையின்றி முடிவடைகின்றன. என் உயிர் வெறுங்காற்றே என்பதை நினைவுகூருவீர்; என் கண்கள் மீண்டும் நன்மையைக் காணா.
இப்போது நாம் கேட்ட இந்த வரிகளை நம்மில் பலர் பலவிதங்களில் சொல்லியிருக்கிறோம். துன்பங்கள் நம் வாழ்வை நிரப்பும்போது, நம்மிடமிருந்து முதலில் விடைபெறுவன உணவும், உறக்கமும். இன்னல்மிகு இரவுகள் எனக்குப் பங்காயின. படுக்கும்போது எப்போது எழலாம் என்பேன்! இரவோ நீண்டிருக்கும்; விடியும்வரை புரண்டு உழல்வேன். என்ற யோபுவின் வார்த்தைகள் நமது உள்ளத்தின் உணர்வுகளை எதிரொலிப்பதாய் உள்ளன.
துன்பச் சூறாவளி நம்மைத் தாக்கும்போது, வேரோடு பிடுங்கப்பட்ட மரத்தைப்போல, சுழல்காற்றில் சிக்கிய ஒரு சருகைப் போல, புயலில் சிக்கியப் படகைப் போல என்றெல்லாம் நாம் நம்மையே உருவகப்படுத்திக் கொள்கிறோம். நிலையற்று அலைபாயும் தன் வாழ்வை யோபுவும் ஓர் உருவகத்தால் கூறியுள்ளார். என் நாள்கள் தறியின் ஓடுகட்டையினும் விரைந்தோடுகின்றன; அவை நம்பிக்கையின்றி முடிவடைகின்றன என்று கூறியுள்ளார்.
உருவகங்களில் நாம் பேசிக் கொண்டிருப்பதால், மற்றுமொரு உருவகத்தையும் உங்களுக்கு நினைவுபடுத்த விரும்புகிறேன்.
துன்பம் புதைமணலைப் போன்றது. புதைமணலில் இருப்பவர்கள் அந்தப் புதைமணலிலேயே தங்கள் கவனம் முழுவதையும் செலுத்தி, அங்கேயே தங்கி, போராடிக் கொண்டிருந்தால் அந்தப் புதைமணலுக்குள் இன்னும் ஆழமாகப் புதைந்துபோகும்
ஆபத்து உண்டு. புதைமணலில் இருந்து நாம் கரையேற வேண்டுமெனில், உறுதியான ஓர் இடத்தில் உள்ள மற்றவரின் உதவி நமக்கு வேண்டும். அவர் நமது கரம் பற்றி நம்மை மேலே இழுத்தால், நாம் அங்கிருந்து வெளியேற முடியும்.
புதைமணலில் சிக்கியிருந்த யோபுவின் நம்பிக்கையற்ற கதறலை முதல் வாசகத்தில் கேட்டோம். ஆனால், யோபு அங்கேயே தங்கிவிடவில்லை.
இறைவன் மீது அவர் கொண்ட நம்பிக்கை அவரைப் புதைமணலிலிருந்து விடுவித்து உறுதியான பாறையின் மீது நிறுத்தியது என்பதை நாம் அறிவோம். யோபுவைப் போல இறைவன் மீது அசையாத நம்பிக்கை கொள்ள இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நமக்கு அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறது. உடல் நோயாலும், மன நோயாலும் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பலருக்கு இயேசு குணமளிக்கும் நிகழ்ச்சியை மாற்கு நற்செய்தியில் நாம் கேட்கிறோம்.
இந்த நற்செய்தியில் இரு பகுதிகள் என் கவனத்தை ஈர்த்தன. இயேசு குணமளிக்கும் இந்தப் புதுமைகளைச் செய்தது ஓர் ஒய்வு நாளில். ஒய்வு நாளன்று எந்தப் பணியும் செய்யக்கூடாது என்பது யூதர்களின் முக்கியமான ஒரு சட்டம். இயேசு அதை மீறினார். அவரைப் பொறுத்தவரை, குணமளிப்பது என்பது பணியே அல்ல, அது உண்பது உறங்குவது போன்ற ஒரு தினசரி கடமை என்று இயேசு எண்ணியதால் இந்தப் பணியைத் தயங்காது செய்தார். அதிலும், அவர் சீமோனுடைய மாமியாரைக் குணப்படுத்தியபோது, வெறும் வார்த்தைகளால் அந்த குணமளித்தலைச் செய்யவில்லை. மாறாக, மாற்கு நற்செய்தி
சொல்வதுபோல், இயேசு அவரருகில் சென்று கையைப் பிடித்து அவரைத் தூக்கினார். காய்ச்சல் அவரை விட்டு நீங்கிற்று. அவர் அவர்களுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்தார்.
ஒய்வு நாளில் எந்த ஓர் உடல் வருத்தமும் மேற்கொள்ளக்கூடாது என்று சட்டம் வலியுறுத்தினாலும், இயேசு அதை மீறினார். அவரைப் பொறுத்தவரை, ஒரு மனிதரைக் குணமாக்க எந்த சட்டத்தையும் மீறலாம் என்பதைத் தெளிவுபடுத்தினார்.
இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் என்னை ஈர்த்த இரண்டாவது பகுதி இது:
மாலை வேளையில், கதிரவன் மறையும் நேரத்தில் நோயாளர்கள், பேய்பிடித்தவர்கள் அனைவரையும் மக்கள் அவரிடம் கொண்டுவந்தார்கள். நகர் முழுவதும் வீட்டு வாயில்முன் கூடியிருந்தது. பல்வேறு பிணிகளால் வருந்திய பலரை அவர் குணப்படுத்தினார். பல பேய்களையும் ஓட்டினார்; அந்தப் பேய்கள் அவரை அறிந்திருந்ததால் அவற்றை அவர் பேசவிடவில்லை.
சீமோனின் மாமியார் குணமான செய்தி அந்த ஊரில் காட்டுத் தீயைப்போல் பரவியதால், ஊர் முழுவதும் திரண்டு வந்திருந்தது. குணமளிப்பது கடவுளே ஆனாலும், இயேசுவே ஆனாலும், அந்த குணமளிக்கும் ஊற்றை நாடி வருவது நமது கடமை. குணம் பெற வேண்டும் என்ற ஆவல், குணம் பெறுவோம் என்ற நம்பிக்கை இவை இல்லாதபோது குணம் பெறுவது கடினம். இயேசுவின் சக்தியைப் பற்றி அன்றுதான் அவ்வூர் மக்கள் அறிந்திருந்தனர்.
ஆனால், தீய ஆவிகளுக்கு அவர் யார் என்பது ஏற்கனவே தெரிந்திருந்தது.
இப்படி தனது வலிமையும், புகழும் வளர்ந்து வருவது இயேசுவை எள்ளளவும் பாதிக்கவில்லை. எவ்வித புகழையும் தேடாமல்,
அவர் அமைதியாக தன் குணமாக்கும் பணியைத் தொடர்ந்தார். பலனை, புகழை எதிர்பாராமல் பணிகள் செய்பவர்களைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்கும்போது எனக்கு ஒரு கதை நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது:
மற்றவர்களுக்கு நன்மைகள் செய்வதையே தன் வாழ்வின் மூச்சாகக் கொண்டு வாழ்ந்த ஒரு மகானுக்கு முன் இறைவன் தோன்றினார். அந்த மகானின் அற்புத வாழ்வுக்குப் பரிசாக அவருக்கு பிடித்த ஒரு வரத்தை கேட்கச் சொன்னார் இறைவன். தனக்கு எதுவும் வேண்டாம் என்று அந்த மகான் மறுத்தார். இருந்தாலும், இறைவன் விடுவதாகத் தெரியவில்லை. இறுதியாக, அந்த மகான், "இறைவா, என் நிழலைத் தொடும் அனைவரும் குணம் பெறும்படி வரம் தாரும்" என்று கேட்டார். இறைவன் அந்த வரத்தை மகிழ்வோடு தருவதாகச் சொன்னார். உடனே மகான் ஒரு நிபந்தனையைச் சொன்னார்... "எப்போதெல்லாம் என் நிழல் எனக்குப் பின்னே விழுகிறதோ அந்த நிழலுக்கு மட்டுமே இந்தச் சக்தியை நீர் தர வேண்டும்."
என்று அந்த மகான் வேண்டிக் கொண்டார்.
நாம் இன்று இறைவனிடம் மூன்று வரங்களுக்காக மன்றாடுவோம்.
- முதலில், குணம்
பெறவேண்டும் என்ற
நிலையில் நாம்
இருந்தால், அல்லது நமது நெருங்கிய உறவுகள் இருந்தால்,
நாம் குணம்
பெறுவோம், அவர்கள் குணம் பெறுவார்கள் என்ற நம்பிக்கை நமக்குள் வளர வேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம்.
- இரண்டாவது, தீயில் வெந்து கிடந்த அந்தச் சிறுவன் குணமாவதற்கு உதவிகள் செய்கிறோம் என்பதே தெரியாமல் உதவி
செய்த அந்த
இளம்பெண்ணைப் போல,
தனக்குப் பின்
விழும் நிழலால் மக்கள் குணம்
பெறவேண்டும் என்று
விரும்பிய அந்த
மகானைப் போல
எந்தவித எதிர்பார்ப்பும் இல்லாமல் பிறருக்கு நன்மைகள் செய்வதற்கு நாம் முன்வர வேண்டும் என்று
செபிப்போம்.
- இறுதியாக, நலமளிக்கும் பணிகளுக்கு இடையூறாக வரும்
நிபந்தனைகள், சட்டங்கள்
போன்றவற்றை தாண்டி, நமது பணிகளைத் தொடரும் உறுதி
நமக்கு உருவாக வேண்டும் என்றும் மன்றாடுவோம்.
