Up to the Brim… விளிம்பு வரை நிரப்பி...

The month of ‘Thai’ in the Tamil calendar begins with the popular festival Pongal. One of the popular statements about this month is: “Come Thai, avenues will open.” (Thai piranthaal, vazhi pirakkum). Avenues will open… Avenues paved with dreams. The dream of childbirth, graduation, getting employed, getting married, building a house… Human capacity for dreams is endless. Among these dreams, some may turn out to be nightmares too. One such dream that has nightmare written all over is the wedding day. Even if every little detail is given utmost care, things do go wrong on the day of the wedding. Most of the troubles on a wedding day revolve around the food. This is what happened at Cana in Galilee. Although Jesus takes the limelight of this ‘first sign’, we shall spend time reflecting on the side actors – namely, Mary who initiated the miracle and the workers who completed it. I am sure Jesus would not mind sharing the limelight with them!

Here are the opening verses of the gospel passage from John: On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. (John 2:1-2)

The mother of Jesus was there. Was she invited? Not clear; but she was there. This can also be interpreted that she had gone to Cana much ahead of the wedding day, just to help out. She was there taking care of all their needs. This is the beauty of Mary. She goes where there is a need, not waiting for an invitation. Don’t we know how she went in haste to the house of Elizabeth once she learnt that Elizabeth was pregnant? The same readiness to help out must have brought Mary to Cana much ahead of the wedding.

Even on the day of the wedding, she was always on the lookout for anything that was needed. She probably was the first one to notice the shortage of wine. She went to Jesus and made this request: “They have no wine.” What type of a request is this? If Mary had followed this up with something like… “Kindly do something about it”, then the request would be complete. But just to state that they don’t have wine does not make it a request. Right? Wrong. Dear Friends, this was not only a proper request but, as some spiritual writers say, this statement of Mary was a good prayer. A prayer? Yes, a model prayer.

Most of us think of prayer as a list of petitions. Instead, prayer can also be just a silent acknowledgement of what we are. Sitting in the presence of God silently and laying our life bare in God’s presence is a good prayer. Such a prayer does not come easy. This type of prayer requires more trust and hope than the prayer where we submit a list of to-do’s to God.

Mary stated the true situation at the wedding. Nothing more, nothing less. If this was simple enough, then came another simpler statement from Mary. She told the workers standing nearby: “Do whatever he tells you.” Once again, an excellent statement that calls for total abandonment to God. If only we could bare our heart in front of God and do WHATEVER Jesus tells us, life would be a lot simpler and safer.

What Jesus told the workers was, once again, simple… shockingly simple. Here is the main part of the miracle – the first sign of Jesus – at Cana:

John 2: 5-12

His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast." So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now." This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

Mary had given the workers an intriguing direction: “Do whatever he tells you.” The workers were awaiting some directions from Jesus. They had plenty to do. They were quite tensed about the shortage of wine. Although they saw nothing special in this stranger, still they awaited his directions. Though they weren’t impressed with this gentleman, they knew that the lady who directed them to Jesus was very kind and gentle working with them for the past few days. She had solved quite many problems they faced. This young man happened to be her son. So… they awaited his directions.

Jesus looked around. He saw the stone jars nearby. Then came the bolt from the blue: "Fill the jars with water." What? Is he serious? We can well imagine the shock experienced by those workers. To help us understand better what Jesus asked them to do, we can imagine a present day wedding. Imagine a wedding that takes place in a remote village or a small town where houses or reception halls do not have running water. Naturally, large vessels or plastic buckets filled with water would be placed at the entrance to the dining hall for people to wash their hands and feet. In some places they would have cement tubs filled with water. It is unthinkable that any one would drink water from these vessels. Jesus wanted the workers to fill up those vessels.

Was this a joke? There was shortage of wine and this man told them to fill up jars meant for purification. Are we missing something here? What is he trying to prove? Such thoughts were filling up the minds of the workers. Still, they began doing what Jesus told them to do. Something in Jesus’ voice made them follow his directions. They could see that he was quite serious about what he was saying.

Once the jars were filled up, Jesus said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast." So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine… Wait! When did the water become wine? Usually, when Jesus performed a miracle, either a word was spoken or a gesture was done. In this event, no such mention is made. There is nothing like “Jesus stretched out his hand and blessed the water…” etc. John mentions nothing of this. Then, how come the water turned into wine?

Here is the master stroke from John. Jesus makes two statements: "Fill the jars with water." and "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast." Between these two statements, John’s master stroke comes in the form of a sentence. They (the workers) filled them up to the brim. Dear friends, this act of the workers paved the way for the miracle. This act was part of the miracle.

If the workers felt funny or furious with Jesus’ directions, they would have done the job half heartedly. Only half jars would have been filled. But, John says that they FILLED THE JARS UP TO THE BRIM. This means that some change had occurred in their hearts. This change of heart paved the way for the change of water into wine. I am sure, dear friends, that most of us have experienced this in our lives. Whenever we had done something with our whole heart, not only were our hearts filled with peace and joy to the brim, but quite a few other changes did happen.

What followed this change of water into wine also is worth reflecting on. After tasting the superior wine, the master of the banquet was curious to know what had happened. He checked with the bridegroom and he too was ignorant. Once again, as an aside John mentions that the servants knew. I would like to see this as John’s way of saying that those who were important in the wedding feast, including the bridegroom, were not part of the miracle. Only the workers were.

In a wedding feast we use many articles. Not all of them are of equal importance. Just check any wedding album. You can see what I am trying to say. In a wedding album the special chairs and the car used by the couple would figure in most of the pictures. What about the wash tubs, the vessels used for washing our hands etc.? Do they figure in our albums? Hardly. Unfortunately, the same is true about the workers. Although they slog the whole day, they are hardly given their due recognition.

Changing water into wine was surely a miracle. Changing the order of importance was another miracle that took place in Cana. The workers were an integral part of the miracle. The jars used for washing purposes had become the vessels of God’s grace, abundance and miracle. Fringe persons, fringe things had taken the centre-stage while the central figures had vanished from the limelight. The Kingdom of God, as some authors would say, is all about reversals. At Cana in Galilee the Kingdom was inaugurated with a lovely reversal! At the beginning of another new year it would be good to think of the core and fringes of our lives.

தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும் என்பது தமிழ் கலாச்சாரத்தில் வேரூன்றியுள்ள ஓர் நம்பிக்கை. தை பிறந்ததும் பல குடும்பங்களில் திருமண வைபவங்கள் நடைபெறும். திருமணம் என்றாலே, பலவிதமான, பலமான ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்யப்படும். என்னதான் வரிந்து, வரிந்து ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்தாலும், அங்கொன்றும் இங்கொன்றுமாகக் குறைகள் எழத்தான் செய்யும். கலிலேயாவின் கானாவில் நிகழ்ந்த ஒரு திருமணத்தில் இயேசு கலந்து கொண்டார். அந்தத் திருமணத்தில் ஏற்பட்ட ஒரு குறையையும், அந்தக் குறை தீர்க்கப்பட்ட அழகையும் இன்று நாம் சிந்திக்க வந்திருக்கிறோம்.

திருமணங்களில் பெரும்பாலும் சாப்பாட்டு நேரங்களில்தான் குறைகள் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்படும், பிரச்சனைகள் வெடிக்கும். கானாவில் நடந்த திருமணத்திலும் சாப்பாட்டு விடயத்தில்தான் குறை ஏற்பட்டது. யூதர்களின் திருமணங்களில், திராட்சை இரசம் தீர்ந்து போவதென்பது பெரிய மானப்பிரச்சனை.

திருமணங்களில் குறைகள் ஏற்படும்போது, அவைகளைப் பகிரங்கப்படுத்தி, பெரிதாக்கி, வேடிக்கை பார்ப்பவர்கள் உண்டு. பிரச்சனைகளுக்கு விரைவாகத் தீர்வு காண்பவர்களும் உண்டு. மரியா இரண்டாவது வகையைச் சேர்ந்தவர். குறையைக் கண்டதும் அதைத் தீர்க்க நினைக்கிறார். தன் மகனிடம் கூறுகிறார். அன்னை மரியா தன் மகனிடம் இந்தக் குறையை எடுத்துரைத்த அழகை யோவான் நற்செய்தி இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறது.

திருமண விழாவில் திராட்சை இரசம் தீர்ந்து போகவே இயேசுவின் தாய் அவரை நோக்கி, ″திராட்சை இரசம் தீர்ந்துவிட்டது″ என்றார்.

பல இறையியல் வல்லுனர்கள் மரியாவின் இந்தக் கூற்றை அழகான ஒரு செபம் என்று கூறுகின்றனர். இரசம் தீர்ந்துவிட்டது என்பது சாதாரணமாகச் சொல்லப்படும் ஒரு எதார்த்தமான கூற்று. அதை எப்படி செபம் என்று சொல்வது என்று ஒரு சிலர் தயங்கலாம். ஆம், இது ஓர் அழகிய செபம்.

செபம் என்றதும், இது வேண்டும், அது வேண்டும் என்ற நீண்ட பட்டியல் ஒன்று நம் உள்ளத்தில் விரியும். இல்லையா? கடவுளிடம் நீண்ட பட்டியல்களைச் சமர்பிப்பதற்குப் பதில், உள்ளத்தைத் திறந்து, உண்மைகளைச் சொல்வது... இன்னும் அழகான, உயர்வான செபம். இந்த செபத்தைச் சொல்வது அவ்வளவு எளிதல்ல. இப்படி ஒரு செபத்தைச் சொல்வதற்கு ஆழ்ந்த நம்பிக்கை வேண்டும். நமது தேவைகளை நம்மைவிட அந்த நல்ல தேவன் நன்கு அறிவார்; அவரிடம் குறையைச் சொன்னால் போதும் என்று எண்ணுவதற்கு நிறைவான நம்பிக்கை வேண்டும்.

இவ்வகைச் செபத்தைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள ஒரு சிறு கற்பனை உதவும் என்று நம்புகிறேன். பச்சிளம் குழந்தை ஒன்று அழுகிறது. அது வாய் வார்த்தைகளால் தன் தேவைகளைச் சொல்வதில்லை. குழந்தையின் அழுகையை வைத்தே அதன் தேவையைத் தாய் உணர்ந்துகொள்வார். அது பசி அழுகையா, தூக்க அழுகையா, வலியில் எழுந்த அழுகையா என்பதை, குழந்தை வார்த்தைகளால் சொல்லத் தேவையில்லை.

இதோ, மற்றொரு கற்பனை... வீட்டுத்தலைவன் செய்தித்தாளைப் படித்தபடி அமர்ந்திருக்கிறார். வீட்டுத்தலைவி காப்பி கலக்க சமையலறைக்குள் செல்கிறார். சர்க்கரை தீர்ந்துவிட்டதைப் பார்க்கிறார். அங்கிருந்தபடியே, "என்னங்க, சக்கர தீந்துடுச்சுங்க" என்கிறார். இதன் பொருள் என்ன? தயவுசெய்து செய்தித்தாளை கீழே வைத்துவிட்டு, கடைக்குப்போய், சர்க்கரை வாங்கி வாருங்கள் என்பதுதானே? அவர் சட்டையை மாட்டிக்கொண்டிருக்கும்போது, "ஆங்... சொல்ல மறந்துட்டேன். அரிசியும் தீந்துடுச்சுங்க" என்று சொல்கிறார் வீட்டுத்தலைவி. தலைவன் இந்தத் தேவைகளுக்கு என்ன செய்வார் என்று தலைவிக்குத் தெரியும். அந்த நம்பிக்கையில் சொல்லப்பட்ட உண்மைகள். மரியாவும் இப்படி ஓர் உண்மையை இயேசுவுக்கு முன்னால் வைக்கிறார் - "திராட்சை இரசம் தீர்ந்துவிட்டது." நம்முடைய செபங்கள் இவ்வகையில் அமைந்துள்ளனவா என்பதைச் சிந்திப்பது நல்லது.

கானாவில் நிகழ்ந்த புதுமையில் அன்னை மரியாவின் பங்கு இது. இனி தொடர்வது... திருமண இல்லப் பணியாளர்களின் பங்கு... 'இரசம் தீர்ந்துவிட்டது' என்று இயேசுவிடம் 'சிம்பிளாக'ச் சொன்ன மரியன்னை, பின்னர், பணியாளர்களைப் பார்த்து, இன்னும் 'சிம்பிளாக' "அவர் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்வதெல்லாம் செய்யுங்கள்." என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு அகன்றார். அதன்பின், அந்தத் தாயைப் பற்றி எவ்வித கூற்றும் இல்லை இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில். தன் மகன் புதுமை ஆற்றும்போது, அருகில் நின்று, 'இது என் மகன்' என்று அனைவரிடமும் அறிமுகம் செய்து, அங்கு எழும் பிரமிப்பில், மகிழ்வில் தனக்கும் பங்கு உண்டு என்பதை நிலைநாட்டி... அன்னை மரியா இப்படி எதுவும் செய்யவில்லை. நல்லது ஒன்று நிகழும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் அவர் அங்கிருந்து அகன்றார். அன்னை மரியாவிடம் கற்றுக் கொள்ளக்கூடிய பாடங்கள் நம் வாழ்நாள் முழுமைக்கும் போதாது.

"அவர் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்வதெல்லாம் செய்யுங்கள்." என்று அன்னை மரியா சொல்லியதைக் கேட்ட பணியாளர்களுக்குக் குழப்பம். மரியன்னை 'அவர்' என்று குறிப்பிட்டுச் சொன்ன அந்த இளைஞனை அவர்கள் இதுவரைப் பார்த்ததில்லை. அவரைப் பார்த்தால், பிரச்சனையைத் தீர்த்து வைப்பவர் போல் அவர்களுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. இவர்கள் இப்படி சிந்தித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது, இயேசு தன்னைச் சுற்றிலும் பார்த்தார். அவர்கள் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்த முற்றத்தில் கை, கால் கழுவுவதற்கு வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த ஆறு தொட்டிகளைக் கண்ட இயேசு பணியாளரிடம், "இத்தொட்டிகளில் தண்ணீர் நிரப்புங்கள்" என்றார்.

இந்தக் காட்சியை நாம் வாழும் காலத்திற்கு ஏற்றதுபோல் சொல்லவேண்டுமெனில், ஒரு கிராமத்தில், நடக்கும் திருமண வைபவத்தைக் கற்பனை செய்து கொள்வோம். கை, கால் கழுவ குழாய் வசதி இல்லாத இடங்களில், பெரிய பாத்திரங்களில், பிளாஸ்டிக் வாளிகளில் அல்லது சிமென்ட் தொட்டிகளில் தண்ணீர் வைத்திருப்போம். அந்தத் தண்ணீரை எடுத்து யாரும் குடிப்பதில்லை... அந்தத் தொட்டிகளில் தண்ணீரை நிரப்பச் சொன்னார் இயேசு.

இயேசு சொன்னதைக் கேட்ட பணியாளர்களுக்கு ஆச்சரியம், அதிர்ச்சி, கொஞ்சம் எரிச்சலும் இருந்திருக்கும். பந்தியில் பரிமாற திராட்சை இரசம் இல்லையென்று அலைமோதிக் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது, இப்படி ஒரு கட்டளையை இயேசு தருவார் என்று அவர்கள் சற்றும் எதிர்பார்க்கவில்லை. ஆனால், அதேநேரம், இயேசு சொன்ன கட்டளையில் ஒலித்த ஒரு தனிப்பட்ட அதிகாரம் அவர்கள் மனதில் எதோ ஒருவகை நம்பிக்கையைத் தந்தது. தாயின் தாலாட்டுக் குரலில் கட்டுண்டு நம்பிக்கையோடு கண்ணுறங்கும் குழந்தையைப்போல் இயேசுவின் சொல்லுக்குக் கட்டுப்பட்டு அவர்கள் தொட்டிகளை நிரப்ப ஆரம்பித்தனர். அங்கு நடந்ததைக் கூறும் யோவான் நற்செய்தி இதோ:

யோவான் நற்செய்தி, 2: 5-9

இயேசுவின் தாய் பணியாளரிடம், “அவர் உங்களுக்குச் சொல்வதெல்லாம் செய்யுங்கள்” என்றார். யூதரின் தூய்மைச் சடங்குகளுக்குத் தேவையான ஆறு கல்தொட்டிகள் அங்கே இருந்தன. அவை ஒவ்வொன்றும் இரண்டு மூன்று குடம் தண்ணீர்கொள்ளும். இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “இத்தொட்டிகளில் தண்ணீர் நிரப்புங்கள்” என்று கூறினார். அவர்கள் அவற்றை விளிம்பு வரை நிரப்பினார்கள். பின்பு அவர், “இப்போது மொண்டு பந்தி மேற்பார்வையாளரிடம் கொண்டு போங்கள்” என்று அவர்களிடம் கூறினார். அவர்களும் அவ்வாறே செய்தார்கள். பந்தி மேற்பார்வையாளர் திராட்சை இரசமாய் மாறியிருந்த தண்ணீரைச் சுவைத்தார். அந்த இரசம் எங்கிருந்து வந்தது என்று அவருக்குத் தெரியவில்லை; தண்ணீர் மொண்டு வந்த பணியாளருக்கே தெரிந்திருந்தது.

பணியாளர்கள் தொட்டியில் ஊற்றியது தண்ணீர். ஆனால், அதை அவர்கள் மொண்டு எடுத்துச் சென்றபோது, அது இரசமாக மாறியிருந்தது. எப்போது, எப்படி இந்த புதுமை நடந்தது?

வழக்கமாக, இயேசுவின் புதுமைகளில் அவர் சொல்லும் ஒரு சொல்லோ, அல்லது அவரது ஒரு செயலோ புதுமைகளை நிகழ்த்தும். ஆனால், இந்தப் புதுமை நடந்தபோது, அப்படி தனிப்பட்ட வகையில் இயேசு எதையும் சொல்லவில்லை. செய்யவுமில்லை. "தண்ணீர் நிரப்புங்கள்" என்றார். "இப்போது மொண்டு பந்தி மேற்பார்வையாளரிடம் கொடுங்கள்" என்றார். இவ்விரு கூற்றுகளுக்குமிடையே, நீர் நிரப்பப்பட்ட தொட்டிகள் மீது அவர் கைகளை நீட்டியதாகவோ, வேறு எதுவும் சொன்னதாகவோ நற்செய்தியில் ஒன்றும் குறிப்பிடப்படவில்லை.

ஆனால், இயேசுவின் இந்த இரு கூற்றுகளுக்குமிடையே, யோவான் ஒரு அழகிய வாக்கியத்தை இணைத்துள்ளார். “இத்தொட்டிகளில் தண்ணீர் நிரப்புங்கள்”  என்று இயேசு சொன்னதும், அவர்கள் அவற்றை விளிம்பு வரை நிரப்பினார்கள். இதுதான் அந்த பொருள்நிறைந்த வாக்கியம். என்னைப் பொறுத்தவரை, எப்போது அந்தப் பணியாளர்கள் விளிம்பு வரை நீர் நிரப்பினார்களோ, அப்போது அந்தத் தண்ணீர் திராட்சை இரசமாக மாறிய புதுமை நிகழ்ந்தது.

இயேசு சொல்லியதைக் கேட்டு, குழப்பத்தோடும், கோபத்தோடும் பணியாளர்கள் செயல்பட்டிருந்தால், தொட்டிகளை அரைகுறையாய் நிரப்பியிருப்பார்கள். ஆனால், யோவான் தெளிவாகக் கூறியுள்ளார்: அவர்கள் அத்தொட்டிகளை விளிம்பு வரை நிரப்பினார்கள் என்று. அப்படியெனில் அந்த பணியாளர்களின் உள்ளத்தில் ஒரு மாற்றம் ஏற்பட்டது. இந்த உள்ள மாற்றம்தான் தண்ணீரையும் இரசமாக மாற்றியது. தங்கள் அதிர்ச்சி, தயக்கம், எரிச்சல் எல்லாவற்றையும் புறந்தள்ளிவிட்டு, அவர்கள் செய்யும் செயலை முழுமையாகச் செய்த அந்த நேரத்திலேயே, அவர்கள் ஊற்றிய தண்ணீர் திராட்சை இரசமாக மாறியது. முழுமையான ஈடுபாட்டுடன் செய்யும் ஒவ்வொரு செயலும் மன நிறைவைத் தருவதோடு வாழ்வில் பல அற்புதமான மாற்றங்களையும் உருவாக்கும். புத்தாண்டின் துவக்கத்தில் இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு பாடத்தை நாம் பயில்வது பயனளிக்கும்.

இறுதியாக, இந்நாட்களில் திருமண உறவில் இணையும் மணமக்கள் வாழ்வில் அன்னை மரியாவும், இயேசுவும் பங்கேற்கவும், அந்த அன்னையின் பரிந்துரையால் மணமக்கள் வாழ்வில் இறைவன் அற்புதங்களை ஆற்றவும் சிறப்பாக வேண்டிக்கொள்வோம்.
