“Who Do People Say that I Am?”
24th Sunday in Ordinary
Time
An
important looking man walks into the airport. He is restless seeing the long
queue and reaches the counter, bypassing those waiting there. The lady at the counter politely
tells him to go back. The man is thoroughly annoyed and says: “Do you know who
I am?” She looks at him with scant respect and attends to the next person in
line. He raises his voice and repeats the question: “Do you know who I am?” The
lady at the counter picks up her microphone and announces aloud, “Here is a
gentleman who doesn’t know who he is. Can someone help him, please?” She goes
back to her work.
Many of us
don’t seem to know who we are. ‘Know thyself’ was proposed, by Socrates, as the
crowning wisdom, a human being could achieve. Desire for self-knowledge, has
made sages spend their entire life on the question: Who am I? This ‘Who am I?’
question is closely linked to ‘Who am I to others – my family, my friends, my
colleagues…?’ In other words this question is similar to what we hear in our Gospel
today… ‘Who do men say that I am?’ Jesus followed this up
with another more important question: ‘Who do you say that I am?’ (Mark 8: 27,29)
I have
heard that in government circles an exercise is taken up every day. What
appears on the TV, as evening news and what appears in the morning papers are
collected, categorised, prioritized and given to the Prime Minister and the
Chief Minister. A special officer is appointed to do this. This is only hearsay
information and you are welcome to take it with more than a pinch of salt. But,
I guess such an exercise is in place in any organisation. We are aware of
service agencies which provide ‘special information’ to the higher-ups!
This
exercise is undertaken to feel the pulse of the people. More often, this
exercise is undertaken with some trepidation. I guess the first question that
confronts most of the political leaders in the morning will be: what do the
people think of me and my government? In other words, who do people say that I
am?
Why did
Jesus ask these questions? Was he worried about his popularity? Nope! There
were other reasons. This is how I interpret this Gospel event. Jesus was
interested in helping his disciples share some of the popular trust people had
in Him. He also wanted to prepare them for the passion message he was going to
share with them. Jesus was probably giving his disciples the bitter pill (predicting
his passion) coated with sugar (a profession of faith, a faith shared by common
people)!
These
questions of Jesus are not addressed to His disciples alone. Down the centuries
they have been addressed to all of us. They have perennial value, in season and
out of season.
Who do
people say that Jesus is?
On quite
many occasions, surveys have been undertaken to discover who has influenced the
history of humankind. Almost in all of them, Jesus Christ has figured either in
the first place or within the first three positions. Such has been his
influence.
Who do
people say that Jesus is?
People have
said and, still, are saying so many things… good and bad, true and false,
profession of faith and downright blasphemy! The discussions on who Jesus was,
have resulted in a war of ‘words’ and, sometimes, a war of ‘swords’ that have
taken people’s lives. Such war of words with no trace of love, would amount to
the ‘clanging symbol’ spoken of by St
Paul
Letter
of James 2: 14-17
What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says
he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? If a brother or sister
is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in
peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the
body, what does it profit? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.
Who do
you say that I am?
Hey, wake
up… this question is personally addressed to you and me. Who do I say that
Jesus is? All the answers I have been memorising since childhood may not be
helpful. Neither is Jesus interested in my memorised answers. I am now asked to
face this question seriously, personally.
More than a
question, it is an invitation – an invitation to be convinced of the person of
Jesus so that I can follow Him more closely. Most of us become speechless and,
perhaps, embarrassed by such a direct question… such a confrontation… rather, ‘care-frontation’!
This invitation, this ‘care-frontation’ from Jesus is not to increase our
knowledge about Him. It is an invitation to change! A true encounter with Jesus
will do just that… CHANGE US!
Here is a
story (by Fr Anthony de Mello?) of a drunkard who does a total turnaround. He
is met by the parish priest who asks him the reason for this great change. He
says that he had met Jesus. The parish priest begins his enquiry. Here is the
conversation:
Priest:
"You say, you have met Jesus. Now, tell me where was he born?"
Man:
"Don't know, Father... Perhaps, Jerusalem
Priest: How
long did he live?
Man: Hmm...
May be 50, 60?
Priest:
Where and how did he die?
Man: Don't
know, Father.
Priest:
(Controlling his temper) Even a little child would give me clear answers to
these questions and you?.... How can you say you met Jesus?
Man:
Father, I don't know the answers for these questions. I know one thing for
sure. Last year, I was given to heavy drinking. My family was in ruins. My wife
and children would dread my coming home in the evening. Now, for the past six
months, I have given up drinking. My debts are getting cleared. My wife and
children wait eagerly for my return home. My kids come running towards me when
I come home. All these were possible since I met Jesus.... As for these
questions, I am really sorry, I can't answer them properly.
Priest:
(SILENCE)
The Priest
KNEW ABOUT Jesus; but the converted person KNEW Jesus. That is the main
difference. All the details the Priest knew, would answer the first question of
Jesus, namely: ‘Who do people say that I am?’ But when it came to the question
of ‘Who do you say that I am?’ the ex-drunkard would be a better person to
answer.
Two types
of knowledge. Two questions: Who do people say that I am? Who do you say that I
am? One is bookish, all the details about God, Theology.... All of us need
this, to some extent.
But there
is another type of knowledge of God that leads one to action. Who do you say
that I am? A direct encounter with God. A personal knowledge of God, Jesus...
This leads to... changes, as in the case of the drunkard-turned-a-decent-Dad!
Here is a
story of a world famous trapeze artist who was performing death defying stunts
over a canyon exceedingly deep. In one such stunt, he was taking a wheelbarrow
filled with rocks over the rope. He was blindfolded too! When he had completed
this particular stunt, one of his ardent fans rushed to him, grabbed his hands
and told him that he was surely the best in the world. The artist felt happy
about these compliments. Then he asked his fan whether he believed in his
capacity to do all these dare-devil stunts. “I believe you are the best, ever!”
was his firm, affirmative answer. Then the trapeze artist told him, “Okay then,
now I would like to perform the final adventure. I shall take this wheelbarrow
once again over the rope. This time you sit in it.” (Story taken from “At
Home With God” by Hedwig Lewis, S.J.) I presume that the ardent,
enthusiastic fan must have disappeared into thin air, when he was given this
‘invitation’!
It is so
easy to answer the ‘theoretical’ question: “Who do people say that I am?” But
when Jesus turns around and says, “Who do YOU say that I am?” I feel like
running away from this ‘care-frontation’. Am I ready to sit in the wheelbarrow
and be transported by Jesus over the canyon… the canyon between reason and
faith? Hm… yes, perhaps… well, you see… it’s actually like this… No clear
answer seems to be forthcoming. Well, dear friends, there is no easy answer to
this question - “Who do
you say that I am?” The answer we give, does not come from the head but from
the heart, a heart that is ready to CHANGE!

ஞாயிறு
கிராமத்திலிருந்து நகரம் வந்துசேரும் ஓர் அப்பாவியின் அனுபவம், நமது சிந்தனைகளை இன்று துவக்கி வைக்கிறது.
நகரத்தில், எந்நேரமும், மக்கள், கூட்டம் கூட்டமாய் இருப்பதைப் பார்த்து மிரண்டு விடுகிறார் கிராமத்து
அப்பாவி. பார்க்கும் இடமெல்லாம் மக்கள் வெள்ளம். இந்த வெள்ளத்தில் தானும் அடித்துச்
செல்லப்படுவோமோ என்ற ஒரு பயம் அவருக்கு.
இரவில் படுத்துறங்க இடம் தேடுகிறார். ஒரு மண்டபம் கண்ணில் படுகிறது.
அந்த மண்டபத்தில் நூற்றுக்கணக்கில் மக்கள் படுத்திருக்கின்றனர். கூட்டமாய் படுத்திருந்த
அம்மனிதர்களைப் பார்க்கையில், ஏதோ வரிசையாக
மூட்டைகள் கிடத்தி வைக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதைப் போல் ஓர் உணர்வு நம் நாயகனுக்கு. இந்த மூட்டைகளில்
ஒரு மூட்டையாக தான் இரவில் காணாமல் போய்விடுவோமோ என்று பயந்தார்.
காலையில் எழுந்ததும் தன்னை அடையாளம் கண்டு கொள்வதற்காக, தன் காலில் ஒரு வெள்ளைத் துணியைக் கட்டிக்கொண்டு
படுத்தார். இந்த அப்பாவி கிராமத்து மனிதர் செய்ததைக் கவனித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார், நகரத்து மனிதர் ஒருவர். அவர் கொஞ்சம் குறும்புக்காரர்.
எனவே, அந்த கிராமத்து மனிதர்
நன்கு உறங்கிய பின், அவர் காலில் கட்டியிருந்த
அந்த வெள்ளைத் துணையை கழற்றி, தன் காலில்
கட்டிக்கொண்டு படுத்து விட்டார்.
விடிந்தது. கிராமத்து மனிதர் எழுந்தார். அவர் காலில் கட்டியிருந்த
வெள்ளைத் துணியைக் காணாமல் திகைத்தார். கொஞ்ச தூரம் தள்ளி, மற்றோருவர் காலில் அது கட்டியிருப்பதைக் கண்டார்.
அவரது திகைப்பு, குழப்பம், பயம் எல்லாம் அதிகமானது. நகரத்திற்கு வந்து
ஒரு நாளிலேயே, ஓர் இரவிலேயே தான்
காணாமற் போய்விட்டோமே என்று அவர் மிகவும் வருந்தினார். இயேசு சபையைச் சேர்ந்த Carlos
Vallés என்ற ஆன்மீக எழுத்தாளர், தன் நூல் ஒன்றில் பகிர்ந்துகொண்ட கதை இது.
இந்தக் கதை, நம் வாழ்வுக்கு
ஓர் உவமையாகப் பயன்படுகிறது. 'நான்' என்பதை நமக்குக் காட்ட, நமது குலம், படிப்பு, பதவி, சம்பளம்
என்ற வெளிப்புற அடையாளங்களை அதிகம் நம்புகிறோமா? அவை காணாமற் போகும்போது,
நாமே காணாமற் போனதைப் போல் உணர்கிறோமா?
எளிதில் காணாமற்போகக் கூடிய இந்த அடையாளங்களே 'நான் யார்' என்பதைத்
தீர்மானிக்க விட்டுவிட்டால், நாம் உண்மையிலேயே
யார் என்பதை அறியாமல், தொலைந்துபோக
நேரிடும்.
வெளி அடையாளங்களைக் கட்டி வேதனைப்பட்டு, அவை தொலைந்துபோனால், நாமும் தொலைந்துபோனதைப் போல் உணர்வது, தவறு என்பதையும், இந்த அடையாளங்கள் ஏதுமில்லாமல், அடிப்படையில், உண்மையில் ‘நான் யார்’ என்பதை அறிந்துகொள்வதே,
அனைத்து அறிவிலும் சிறந்தது என்பதையும்,
சாக்ரடீஸ் உட்பட, பல மேதைகள்
சொல்லிச் சென்றுள்ளனர். 'நான் யார்' என்ற இந்தக் கேள்வி இயேசுவுக்கும் எழுந்தது.
இயேசுவின் இந்தத் தேடலை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி நமக்குக் கூறுகிறது. இந்த நற்செய்தியின் இரு
வாக்கியங்கள், இயேசுவின் இரு கேள்விகள்
நம் சிந்தனைகளை இன்று நிறைக்கட்டும்.
"நான் யார் என மக்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்?"
"நான் யார் என நீங்கள் சொல்கிறீர்கள்?"
நான் ஆசிரியர் பணி புரிந்தபோது, அரசு அதிகாரிகள் சிலருடன் பழகும் வாய்ப்பு
கிடைத்தது. அவர்கள் அவ்வப்போது சொன்ன ஒரு சில தகவல்கள், இப்போது என் மனதில் நிழலாடுகின்றன. ஒவ்வொரு
நாள் காலையிலும், அன்று காலை செய்தித்
தாள்களில் வந்த தகவல்களையும், முந்திய
நாள் இரவு தொலைக்காட்சி வழியே வந்த தகவல்களையும், சேகரித்து, வகைப்படுத்தி, பட்டியலிட்டு, நாட்டின் பிரதமர் அல்லது மாநிலத்தின் முதலமைச்சர்
இவர்களிடம் கொடுப்பதற்கென ஓர் அரசு அதிகாரி நியமிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார் என்று சொல்லக்
கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன்..
இத்தகவல்களைத் திரட்டுவதன் வழியாக, நாட்டு நடப்புபற்றி தெரிந்துகொள்வது என்பது
ஒரு புறமிருக்க, நாட்டில் தங்களைப்பற்றி, தங்கள் ஆட்சிபற்றி மக்கள் என்ன நினைக்கிறார்கள்
என்பதைத் தெரிந்துகொள்வதே, இந்த முயற்சியின்
முக்கிய நோக்கம். ஒவ்வொரு நாள் காலையிலும் இத்தலைவர்களின் நினைவை, மனதை ஆக்ரமிக்கும் அந்தக் கேள்வி: "நான்
யார் என மக்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்?"
இவர்கள் மனதை இந்தக் கேள்வி ஆக்கிரமிக்கின்றது, உறுத்துகின்றது என்றுதான் சொல்லவேண்டும்.
காரணம், இத்தலைவர்கள், உள்ளொன்றும், வெளியோன்றும் என இரட்டை வேடமிட்டு வாழ்வதால், எது தங்கள் உண்மை நிலை என்பதே மாறி, மக்கள் முன் தங்கள் வேடம் எவ்வளவு தூரம் நிலைத்துள்ளது
என்ற சந்தேகமும், பயமும் இவர்களை ஆட்டிப்
படைக்கிறது. மக்களை மையப்படுத்தி, அவர்கள்
நலனையே நாள் முழுவதும் சிந்தித்து, செயல்படும்
தலைவனுக்கோ, தலைவிக்கோ, இந்தக் கேள்வியே எழாது. அப்படியே எழுந்தாலும், அது பயத்தை உண்டாக்காது.
இயேசு இந்தக் கேள்வியைக் கேட்டதற்கு ஒரு முக்கிய காரணம்?... தன்னை இன்னும் சரிவர புரிந்து கொள்ளாத சீடர்களுக்கு
அவர் ஒரு வாழ்வுப் பாடத்தைக் கற்றுக்கொடுக்க விழைந்தார் என்பதே. மக்கள் தன்னைப்பற்றி
சொல்வதைக் கேட்டாகிலும், சீடர்கள், இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் ஆழமாக, தன்னைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள மாட்டார்களா என்ற ஏக்கம்
இயேசுவுக்கு இருந்திருக்கலாம். அல்லது, இந்தக் கேள்வி
பதில் பரிமாற்றத்தைத் தொடர்ந்து, தன் பாடுகளைப்பற்றி
சொல்லப்போவதை சீடர்கள் புரிந்துகொள்ள, மக்களிடமிருந்து
அவர்கள் கேட்ட ஒரு சில விசுவாச அறிக்கைகள்,
அவர்களுக்கு உதவாதா என்ற ஏக்கமாக இருக்கலாம்.
மக்கள் இயேசுவைப் பற்றி என்ன சொல்கிறார்கள்?
இருபது நூற்றாண்டுகளாய் மனித வரலாற்றில் அதிகமான, ஆழமான தாக்கங்களை ஏற்படுத்தியவர்களைக் குறித்து
கருத்துக் கணிப்புகள் பல நடந்துள்ளன. ஏறக்குறைய எல்லாக் கருத்துக் கணிப்புகளிலும் இயேசுவின்
பெயர் முதலிடம், அல்லது, முதல் மூன்று இடங்களில் ஒன்றாக இருந்துள்ளது.
மனித வரலாற்றில் ஈராயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக, இத்தனை ஆழமானப் பாதிப்புக்களை உருவாக்கியவர்கள் ஒரு சிலரே. இவர்களில்
ஒருவர் இயேசு என்பது, மறுக்கமுடியாத
உண்மை.
இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு கேட்கும் இரண்டாவது கேள்வி:
"நான் யார் என நீங்கள் சொல்கிறீர்கள்?"
ஹலோ, உங்களைத்தான்...
என்னையும்தான்... இந்தக் கேள்வி நமக்குத்தான்... நாம் சிறு வயது முதல் அம்மாவிடம், அப்பாவிடம், அருள்பணியாளர்கள், சகோதரிகள், ஆசிரியர்களிடம் பயின்றவற்றை, மனப்பாடம் செய்தவற்றை வைத்து, "நான் யார் என்று மக்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்?" என்ற அந்த முதல் கேள்விக்குப் பதில் சொல்லிவிடலாம்.
ஆனால், இந்த இரண்டாவது கேள்விக்கு
அப்படி எளிதாகப் பதில் சொல்லிவிட முடியாது.
நான் கேட்டவையும், படித்தவையும்
இந்தக் கேள்விக்கு பதிலாக முடியாது. நான் பட்டுணர்ந்தவை, மனதார நம்புகிறவை... இவையே இந்தக் கேள்விக்கான
பதிலைத் தர முடியும்.
இயேசுவின் இந்தக் கேள்வி, வெறும் கேள்வி அல்ல. இது ஓர் அழைப்பு. அவரது பணி வாழ்விலும், பாடுகளிலும் பங்கேற்க, அவர் தரும் அழைப்பு. கேள்வி பதில் என்ற வாய்மொழி
வித்தைகளைத் தாண்டி, செயலில் இறங்க இயேசு
இந்த அழைப்பை விடுக்கிறார். "இயேசுவை இறைவன் என்று, தலைவர் என்று, மீட்பர் என்று நம்புகிறேன்" என்று சொல்வது
எளிது. ஆனால், அந்த நம்பிக்கையை
வாழ்வில் நடைமுறையாக்குவது எளிதல்ல. செயல் வடிவம் பெறாத நம்பிக்கை வீண் என்று, இன்றைய இரண்டாம் வாசகத்தில், திருத்தூதர் யாக்கோபு கூறுகிறார்:
யாக்கோபு 2 14-17
என் சகோதர சகோதரிகளே, தம்மிடம் நம்பிக்கை உண்டு எனச்சொல்லும்
ஒருவர் அதைச் செயல்களிலே காட்டாவிட்டால், அதனால் பயன் என்ன? அந்த நம்பிக்கை அவரை மீட்க முடியுமா?
ஒரு சகோதரன் அல்லது ஒரு சகோதரி போதிய உடையும் அன்றாட உணவும்
இல்லாதிருக்கும்போது, அவர்கள்
உடலுக்குத் தேவையானவை எவற்றையும் கொடாமல் உங்களுள் ஒருவர் அவர்களைப் பார்த்து, "நலமே சென்று வாருங்கள்; குளிர் காய்ந்து கொள்ளுங்கள்; பசியாற்றிக் கொள்ளுங்கள்;" என்பாரென்றால் அதனால்
பயன் என்ன?
அதைப்போலவே, நம்பிக்கையும் செயல் வடிவம் பெறாவிட்டால்
தன்னிலே உயிரற்றதாயிருக்கும்.
"நான் யார் என மக்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள்?" என்ற முதல் கேள்விக்கு நாம் அளிக்கும் விடைகள், நம் அறிவை வளர்க்கும். நமது விவாதங்களுக்கு
உதவும். பல நூறு பக்கங்கள் நிறைந்த புத்தகங்களாக மாறும். மனித வரலாற்றில், இயேசு யார் என்பதை விளக்க எழுந்த காரசாரமான
விவாதங்கள், பலரது வாழ்வைப் பறித்ததே
தவிர, அவர்கள் வாழ்வை மாற்றியதா
என்பது கேள்விக்குறிதான்.
கடவுளைப் பற்றி வெறும் புத்தக அறிவு போதாது. அப்படி நாம் தெரிந்துகொள்ளும்
கடவுளை, கோவிலில் வைத்துப்
பூட்டிவிடுவோம். விவிலியத்தில் வைத்து மூடிவிடுவோம். அனால், இறைவனை, இயேசுவை அனுபவத்தில் சந்தித்தால், வாழ்க்கையில் பல மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்படும்.
பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னால் நான் கேட்ட கதை. நீங்களும் இதைக் கேட்டிருக்கலாம்.
குடி பழக்கத்தில் இருந்து முற்றிலும் திருந்திய ஒருவரை, பங்குத் தந்தை சந்திக்கிறார். அவரது மனமாற்றத்திற்கு, பங்குத் தந்தை காரணம் கேட்கும்போது, தான் இயேசுவைச் சந்தித்தாக சொல்கிறார், மனமாற்றம் பெற்றவர்.
அவர் உண்மையிலேயே இயேசுவைத்தான் சந்தித்தாரா என்று அறிய விழைந்த
பங்குத் தந்தை, அவரிடம் சில கேள்விகளை
எழுப்புகிறார். இயேசு எங்கே பிறந்தார்? எத்தனை வருடம்
வாழ்ந்தார்? எத்தனை புதுமைகள்
செய்தார்? எங்கே இறந்தார்? என்று பங்குத் தந்தை அடுக்கிக்கொண்டே சென்ற
கேள்விகள் எதற்கும், மனம் மாறியவரால்
பதில் சொல்ல முடியவில்லை. பங்குத் தந்தைக்கு ஒரே கோபம்... இந்தச் சாதாரணக் கேள்விகளுக்குக்
கூட பதில் தெரியாதவர், எப்படி இயேசுவைச்
சந்தித்திருக்க முடியும் என்று சந்தேகப்படுகிறார்.
அதற்கு, மனம் மாறிய
அவர் சொல்லுவார்: "சாமி, நீங்கள்
கேட்கும் இந்தக் கேள்விகளுக்கெல்லாம் எனக்குப் பதில் தெரியாது. ஆனால், ஒன்று மட்டும் எனக்குத் தெரியும். ஆறு மாதங்களுக்கு
முன்பு வரை என் வாழ்வு நரகமாக இருந்தது. நான் தினமும் குடித்துவிட்டு வீட்டுக்கு வந்து, என் மனைவி, குழந்தைகளைக் கொடுமைப் படுத்தினேன். மாலையில் நான் வீடு திரும்பும்
நேரத்தில் என் கண்களில் படக்கூடாது என்று, என் குழந்தைகள்
தெரு முனையில் சென்று ஒளிந்து கொள்வார்கள். ஆறு மாதங்களுக்கு முன், நான் பங்கேற்ற ஒரு செப வழிபாட்டின்போது, இயேசுவைச் சந்தித்தேன். அன்றிலிருந்து என்
வாழ்வு மாறியது. நான் குடிப்பதை நிறுத்திவிட்டேன். இப்போது நான் மாலையில் வீடு திரும்பும்போது, என் குழந்தைகள், தெரு முனையில் எனக்காகக் காத்துக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறார்கள்.
இந்த மாற்றத்தைத் தந்தது, இயேசு. அது
மட்டும்தான் எனக்குத் தெரியும்" என்று அவர் சொன்னதும், பங்குத் தந்தை மௌனமானார்.
இயேசு கேட்கும் "நான் யார் என்று நீங்கள் சொல்கிறீர்கள்?" என்பது, கேள்வி அல்ல, ஓர் அழைப்பு.
அவரை அனுபவப்பூர்வமாகச் சந்திக்க, அவரை நம்பி, அவரோடு நடக்க, அவரைப் போல் நடக்க, இரவானாலும், புயலானாலும் துணிந்து நடக்க, வாழ்வுப்பாதையை மாற்றியமைக்க, அவர் தரும் ஓர் அழைப்பு.
இந்த அழைப்பிற்கு நாம் தரும் பதில்கள், வார்த்தைகளாக அல்லாமல், செயல் வடிவம் பெறட்டும். குறிப்பாக, வாழ்வில் அனைத்தையும் பறிகொடுத்ததால், நம்பிக்கை இழந்திருப்போருக்கு நம்பிக்கை தரும்
வகையில், நம் செயல்கள் அமையட்டும்.
