Stained Glass of the Holy Spirit
Pentecost Sunday
Pentecost. Although
this word has assumed very many shades of meaning, it simply means the fiftieth
(day). Most often in life, the greatest and the most profound truths are
enveloped in simplicity. A quick look at the last 50 days of our liturgical
cycle will show us that everything around Jesus was simple but steeped in
mystery. In the last 50 days we have had quite a few festivals, celebrations
starting from Easter. We celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday, Good Shepherd Sunday,
Ascension Sunday and now Pentecost Sunday. There are a few more celebrations
lined up… The Feasts of the Holy Trinity, the Body and Blood of Christ, and the
Sacred Heart of Jesus… Every celebration needs to take us back to the ‘source’
– the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of these celebrations. How were the first Easter,
Ascension and Pentecost – the core events of our Christian Faith –
‘celebrated’? Were they ‘celebrated’ at all? I wonder…
What if the
first Easter had been given to an ‘events manager’? I leave it to your
imagination! According to the ‘logic’ of events managers, the first Easter
should have taken place in full splendour… with blaring trumpets and dazzling
pyrotechnics. But, it was a non-event, in every sense of the word – very quiet
and very, very imperceptible!
The first
Ascension, once again, was a very subdued affair with Jesus spending quiet
moments with the disciples on a hillock outside the city, before being taken up
into heaven. The first Pentecost alone had some external manifestations like
the ‘rush of wind’ and ‘tongues of fire’ (Acts 2: 1-4). The real core of the
Pentecost, namely, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Mother Mary and the
disciples, was still a private encounter. The people of Jerusalem
Jesus and
his disciples defined ‘celebration’ in a totally different way. They were more
interested in the ‘why’ and the ‘what’ of the event than the ‘how’ of it. This
‘what’ left a lasting, life-long impression on the disciples.
It would do
us a world of good to reflect on the ‘what’ of the Feast of the Pentecost. This
Feast is the fulfilment of what Christ promised to his disciples – namely the
Holy Spirit. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would take over! The Spirit really
took over the lives of the Apostles. They were not the same after the
Pentecost.
This Feast
gives us an assurance that the Holy Spirit is here to stay in each of us.
Although ‘in him we live and move and have our being’ (Acts 17: 28), we don’t
recognise the Spirit – just like the little fish, swimming in the sea, kept
searching for the sea.
A few years
back, I received a lovely Powerpoint Presentation sent via email by one of my
Jesuit friends. ‘VALUE WHAT YOU HAVE’ was the title. Here is the text of that
presentation:
The
owner of a small business, a friend of the poet Olavo Bilac, met him on the
street and asked him, “Mr Bilac, I need to sell my small farm, the one you know
so well. Could you please write an announcement for me for the paper?”
Bilac
wrote: “For sale: A beautiful property, where birds sing at dawn in extensive
woodland, bisected by the brilliant and sparkling waters of a large stream. The
house is bathed by the rising sun. If offers tranquil shade in the evenings on
the veranda.”
Some
time later, the poet met his friend and asked whether he had sold the property,
to which he replied: “I’ve changed my mind when I read what you had written. I
realised the treasure that was mine.”
Sometimes
we underestimate the good things we have, chasing after the mirages of false
treasures. We often see people letting go of their children, their families,
their spouses, their friends, their profession, their knowledge accumulated
over many years, their good health, the good things of life. They throw out
what God has given them so freely, things which were nourished with so much
care and effort.
Look
around and appreciate what you have: your home, your loved ones, friends on
whom you can really count, the knowledge you have gained, your good heath… and
all the beautiful things of life that are truly your most precious treasure…
What we are
really seeking is already inside us, waiting to be discovered, waiting to be
embraced: the Holy Spirit of God who has been living within us from the moment
of our Baptism. This is ‘what’ this Feast is all about – to recognise the
treasure buried within us!
The Feast
of the Pentecost is also the Birthday of the Church. Any child coming into the
world raises lots of expectations in others. The expectations of the new-born
Church were revealed in what happened on that day in Jerusalem
What did
the new-born child, the Church, do on her Birthday? She unified people coming
from many countries and regions. This is typical of many child-births in
families. A new-born child tends to bring reconciliation in most families.
Let me
stretch the metaphor of the new-born infant a bit more. We don’t need too much
of a brain to understand the ‘language’ of a child. In fact we understand the
language of an infant with our hearts than with our brains. Something similar
happened with the new born Church. When She ‘spoke’ through the disciples
everyone understood! The Acts of the Apostles in today’s first reading gives a
list of those people who understood the disciples:
And they were amazed and wondered, saying,
"Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear,
each of us in his own native language? Par'thians and Medes and E'lamites and
residents of Mesopota'mia, Judea and Cappado'cia, Pontus and Asia, Phryg'ia and
Pamphyl'ia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyre'ne, and visitors
from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling
in our own tongues the mighty works of God." (Acts 2: 7-11)
A bunch of
Galileans spoke and people from many other nations and regions understood them.
The last line of this passage gives us another clue as to how all these
‘different’ people understood what the Galileans spoke… The Galileans spoke
about ‘the mighty works of God’. The last line also stresses the ‘hearing’ part
of the message more than the speaking part. ‘We hear them telling in our
own tongues the mighty works of God.’
To speak of
and to hear about the mighty works of God, one does not require intelligent
brains but an intuitive heart. The disciples spoke from their heart which was
on fire and those who heard them were on fire too since they listened with
their hearts. For this heart-to-heart contact, language – a tool invented by
human beings – cannot be a block.
So, to come
back to the ‘what’ of this Feast… It is the Birthday of the new-born Church.
This Birthday brought together many nations, regions and tribes thus making it
clear that divisions invented by human intelligence will break down when hearts
are united by the fire of the Spirit!
As a
parting thought we can carry the words of St
Paul
But I
say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh…But the
fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. And those
who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and
desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
(Galatians
5: 16, 22-25)

தூய ஆவியாரின் பெருவிழா
உயிர்ப்புப்
பெருவிழா முடிந்து ஐம்பதாம் நாளான இன்று தூய ஆவியாரின் பெருவிழா. இப்பெருவிழாவை, ‘பெந்தக்கோஸ்து’ என்று அழைக்கிறோம். ‘பெந்தக்கோஸ்து’ என்ற சொல்லுக்கு, ‘ஐம்பதாம் நாள்’ என்று பொருள். இந்த ஐம்பது நாட்களில் தொடர்ந்து
பல விழா நாட்கள் வந்துள்ளன. உயிர்ப்புப் பெருவிழாவைத் தொடர்ந்து, இறை இரக்கத்தின் ஞாயிறு,
அதற்குப் பின் நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறு சென்ற வாரம் விண்ணேற்றப் பெருவிழா இந்த ஞாயிறு தூய அவியாரின்
பெருவிழா என்று நாம் கொண்டாடி மகிழ, பல ஞாயிறுகள் தொடர்ந்து வந்தன. இனிவரும் நாட்களிலும்
மூவொரு இறைவனின் திருவிழா, கிறிஸ்துவின் திரு உடல், திரு இரத்தத் திருவிழா, கிறிஸ்துவின் திரு
இருதயத் திருவிழா என்று விழாக்களும் கொண்டாட்டங்களும் தொடரும். ஒவ்வொரு விழாவையும்
கொண்டாடினோம் அல்லது கொண்டாடுகிறோம் என்று சொல்லும்போது, எதைக் கொண்டாடுகிறோம், எப்படி கொண்டாடுகிறோம் என்பதைச்
சிந்திப்பது நல்லது.
இயேசுவின்
உயிர்ப்பு,
விண்ணேற்றம், தூய ஆவியாரின் வருகை என்ற இந்த
மூன்று விழாக்களும் நமது கிறிஸ்தவ விசுவாசத்தின் அடித்தளமான உண்மைகள். இந்த முக்கியமான
உண்மைகள் முதன்முதலில் நிகழ்ந்தபோது, எக்காளம் ஒலிக்க, வாண வேடிக்கைகள் கண்ணைப் பறிக்க இம்மறையுண்மைகள்
உலகத்தின் கவனத்தை ஈர்த்திருக்க வேண்டும் அல்லவா? அப்படி நடந்ததாகத் தெரியவில்லையே! மாறாக, இந்த ஒவ்வொரு நிகழ்வும் முதன் முதலில் நடந்தபோது, அமைதியாய் நடந்தன.
எப்போது,
எப்படி நடந்ததென்றே தெரியாமல் அமைதியாக நிகழ்ந்த ஒரு முக்கிய மறையுண்மை உயிர்ப்பு.
நெருங்கியச் சீடர்களுக்கு மட்டும் இயேசு தந்த ஓர் அமைதியான அனுபவம், விண்ணேற்றம். இன்று
நாம் எண்ணிப்பார்க்கும் தூய ஆவியாரின் விழாவோ, அன்னை மரியாவுக்கும், சீடர்களுக்கும் அந்த மேலறையில்
உண்டான மாற்றங்களைக் கூறும் ஒரு விழா. அந்த மேலறை அனுபவத்திற்குப் பின், எருசலேமில் இருந்தோர் பலருக்கு
இந்தப் பெருவிழாவின் தாக்கம் வெளிப்பட்டது என்று இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம் நமக்குச் சொல்கிறது.
கிறிஸ்தவ விசுவாசத்தின் கருப்பொருளான, அடித்தளமான இந்த மறையுண்மைகள் அனைத்துமே உலகின் கவனத்தை அதிகம்
ஈர்க்காமல் நடைபெற்ற நிகழ்வுகள். விழா என்ற எண்ணத்திற்கு இவ்வுலகம் வகுத்துள்ள இலக்கணத்திற்கு
முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்டதோர் இலக்கணத்தை இவ்விழாக்கள் வகுத்துள்ளன.
உலகம்
வகுக்கும் இலக்கணத்தில், கொண்டாட்டம் எதற்காக என்பதைவிட, கொண்டாட்டம் எப்படி இருக்கவேண்டும்
என்பதிலேயே அதிக கவனம் செலுத்தப்படுகிறது. எவ்வளவு செலவு செய்யப்படுகிறது என்பதைப்பொருத்தே
இந்த விழாக்களின் முக்கியத்துவம் பிறருக்குத் தெரியவரும். பகட்டு, பிரமிப்பு, பிரம்மாண்டம் இவைகளே இவ்விழாக்களின்
உயிர்நாடிகளாய் உள்ளன. இந்த விழாக்கள் எதற்காக கொண்டாடப்பட்டன என்று அடுத்தநாள் கேட்டால்கூட
நமக்கு ஒன்றும் நினைவிருக்காது. அல்லது, அவர்கள் செய்த ஆர்ப்பாட்டமே நமது நினைவில் நிறைந்து, நமக்கு எரிச்சலூட்டும். உலகக் கொண்டாட்டங்களின்
இலக்கணம் இது.
கொண்டாட்டம்
என்ற சொல்லுக்கே புது இலக்கணம் தந்து, நமக்குப் பாடங்களையும் சொல்லித்தந்தனர் இயேசுவும்
அவரது சீடர்களும். பிறரது கவனத்தை ஈர்க்குமளவு கொண்டாட்டங்கள் அமையவேண்டும் என்பதற்குப்
பதிலாக, நாம் கொண்டாடும் விழாவின் உள்அர்த்தம் எவ்வளவு தூரம் நம் வாழ்வை மாற்றுகிறது
என்பதில் நம் கவனம் இருக்க வேண்டும். இவ்விதம் கொண்டாடப்படும் விழாக்கள் ஒருநாள் கேளிக்கைகளாகக்
கடந்துபோகாமல், வாழ்நாளெல்லாம் நம்முள் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்கும்
கருவிகளாக அமையும். உள்ளத்தின் ஆழத்தில் நிறைவைத் தரும் மகிழ்வாக நம்முடன் தங்கும்.
இத்தகையப் பாடங்களை நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தரும் விழாக்கள் - இயேசுவின் உயிர்ப்பு, விண்ணேற்றம், தூய ஆவியாரின் வருகை ஆகிய விழாக்கள்.
தூய ஆவியாரின் பெருவிழா நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தரும் மற்றொரு முக்கிய பாடம் - அவர் வானிலிருந்து
இறங்கிவந்து சிறிது காலம் நம்மோடு தங்கிவிட்டு,
மீண்டும் விண்ணகம்
சென்றுவிடும் இறைவன் அல்ல, மாறாக, அவர் நமக்குள் எப்போதும் உறைந்திருக்கும் இறைவன் என்ற உண்மை. ஒரு
கணமும் நம்மைவிட்டு விலகாமல் வாழும் இறை ஆவியாரை உணராமல் நாம் தேடிக்கொண்டிருப்பது, மீன் ஒன்று, கடல் நீரில் நீந்திக்கொண்டே, கடலைத் தேடியதைப் போன்ற ஒரு நிலை.
மின்னஞ்சல்
வழியே வந்த ஒரு சிறுகதை இது. Value What
You Have - அதாவது, உன்னிடம்
உள்ளதை மதித்து வாழ்வாயாக என்ற தலைப்புடன் என்னை வந்தடைந்த அக்கதையை உங்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து
கொள்கிறேன்.
Olavo Bilac என்பவர், பிரேசில் நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த ஒரு கவிஞர், பத்திரிக்கையாளர். ஒரு நாள் அவரது நண்பர் அவரைத் தேடி வந்தார்.
தன்னுடைய சிறு பண்ணை வீட்டை தான் விற்க விரும்புவதாகக் கூறிய நண்பர், அதை விற்பதற்கு நல்லதொரு விளம்பரத்தை எழுதித் தரும்படி Bilacஇடம் கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். Bilac பின்வரும் விளம்பர வரிகளை எழுதினார்:
"ஓர்
அழகிய பண்ணை வீடு விற்பனைக்கு வருகிறது. இங்கு பறவைகளின் கானம் அதிகாலை முதல் ஒலிக்கும்.
பண்ணையின் நடுவில் அழகிய, தெளிந்ததொரு நீரோடை செல்கிறது.
காலை இளஞ்சூரியனின் ஒளியில் வீட்டின் முகப்பு தினமும் குளிக்கும். மாலையில் பண்ணையில்
பரவும் நிழல் நிம்மதி தரும்." என்ற இவ்வரிகளை எழுதி நண்பரிடம் கொடுத்தார் Bilac.
ஒரு சில
வாரங்கள் சென்று அவர் தன் நண்பரைச் சந்தித்தார். "என்ன? அந்த பண்ணை வீட்டை விற்றுவிட்டாயா?" என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு நண்பர், "இல்லை
நண்பா! நீ அந்தப் பண்ணை வீட்டைப்பற்றி எழுதிய விளம்பரத்தை வாசித்தபின், என் பண்ணை வீடு எவ்வளவு அழகானதென்று அறிந்து கொண்டேன். அதை நான்
விற்கப் போவதில்லை." என்று புன்னகையுடன் பதில் சொன்னார்.
நம்மைப்
பற்றி, நம்மிடம் உள்ளவற்றைப் பற்றி எவ்வளவு தூரம்
நாம் அறிந்துள்ளோம்; நம்மை நாமே எவ்வளவு ஆழமாய் புரிந்து வைத்திருக்கிறோம்
என்பதைப் பொருத்து, நமது நல் வாழ்வு, நமது நல வாழ்வு அமையும்.
நம்மைச் சூழ்ந்துள்ள எத்தனையோ நன்மைகளை உணராமல், நமக்குள் ஊற்றெடுக்கும் கருவூலங்களைக்
கண்டுகொள்ளாமல், தொடுவானங்களை, தூரத்துக் கானல்நீரை, விலகி ஓடும் நிழல்களை நாம் துரத்திச்
செல்வதால், வாழ்வின் பெரும் பகுதியை, நேரத்தை நாம் வீணாக்குகிறோம். பல
நேரங்களில், இந்தப் பொய்யான மாயைகளைப் பெறுவதற்கு நம்மிடம்
உண்மையாய் இருப்பனவற்றை விலை பேசுகிறோம். நம் குடும்பம், தொழில், நண்பர்கள் என்று நம்மைச் சூழ்ந்துள்ள
நல்லவற்றை இழந்துவிட்டு, பின்னர் வருந்துகிறோம்.
நமக்குள்
இருக்கும் நல்லவற்றை நமக்குத் தெளிவுபடுத்தும் ஒளியாக, நமக்குள் நல்லவற்றை பிறப்பிக்கும் ஊற்றாக எப்போதும் உறைந்திருக்கும்
இறைவன், தூய ஆவியார். இவரது பெருவிழாவைக் கொண்டாடும் இத்தருணத்தில், நம்முள் உறையும் தூய ஆவியாரின் வழிநடத்துதலை ஒவ்வொரு நாள்
வாழ்விலும் உணரும் வரத்தை ஒவ்வொருவருக்காகவும் வேண்டுவோம்.
இன்று
நாம் ஒரு பிறந்தநாளைக் கொண்டாடுகிறோம். ஆம்... தூய ஆவியாரின் பெருவிழா, திருஅவையின்
பிறந்தநாள். திருஅவை என்ற குழந்தை பிறந்த விதம், பிறந்ததும்
அக்குழந்தையிடம் வெளிப்பட்ட குணம் ஆகியவை, இன்றைய நம் உலகிற்குத் தேவையானப்
பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித் தருகின்றன.
திருஅவை
என்ற குழந்தை பிறந்தது ஒரு குழுவில், ஒரு குடும்பத்தில். தூய ஆவியாரின்
வருகை என்ற பேருண்மை, தனியொரு மனிதருக்கு, காட்டின் நடுவில், அல்லது மலை உச்சியில் ஏற்பட்ட ஓர் அனுபவம் அல்ல. அன்னை மரியாவுடன்
செபத்தில் இணைந்திருந்த சீடர்கள் நடுவில், தூய ஆவியார் இறங்கி வந்தபோது, திருஅவை பிறந்தது. குழுவாய், குடும்பமாய்
நாம் இணைந்து வரும்போது, ஆழ்ந்த இறை அனுபவம் உருவாகிறது என்பது, திருஅவை என்ற
குழந்தை பிறந்ததும் நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தந்த முதல் பாடம்.
திருஅவை
என்ற குழந்தை பிறந்ததும், வெளிப்பட்ட மற்றொரு குணத்தை, திருத்தூதர் பணிகள் நூலில் நாம் இவ்வாறு வாசிக்கிறோம்: "அவர்கள்
அனைவரும் தூய ஆவியால் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டனர். தூய ஆவியின் தூண்டுதலால் அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரும்
வெவ்வேறான மொழிகளில் பேசத்தொடங்கினார்கள்." (திருத்தூதர் பணிகள் 2: 4) திருஅவை என்ற குழந்தை பிறந்ததும்
பேசத் துவங்கியது; அதுவும், பல்வேறு
மொழிகளில் பேசத் துவங்கியது.
தூய ஆவியாரின்
வருகையால் பிறந்த திருஅவை, பிறந்ததும் உலகிற்குச் சொல்லித்
தந்த அழகானப் பாடங்களில் ஒன்று... மனித இதயங்கள் இணைந்து வரும்போது, மனிதர்கள் உருவாக்கிய மொழி என்ற எல்லை தேவையில்லை என்ற பாடம்.
பேசியவர்கள்
கலிலேயர்கள்; ஆனால், அவர்கள்
சொன்னதை செவி மடுத்தவர்கள் பார்த்தர், மேதியர், எலாமியர் (தி.ப. 2:9-10) என்று பல குலத்தவர். இது எவ்விதம் சாத்தியமானது
என்பதற்கு, இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தின் இறுதி வரிகள் விடை
பகர்கின்றன:
"யூதரும்
யூதம் தழுவியோரும் கிரேக்கரும், அரேபியரும் ஆகிய நாம் நம்மொழிகளிலே
கடவுளின் மாபெரும் செயல்களை இவர்கள் பேசக்கேட்கிறோமே!" என்றனர். (தி.ப. 2:11)
இதயங்கள்
இணைந்து பேசுவது, கடவுளின் மாபெரும் செயல்கள் என்றால், அங்கு மொழியே தேவையில்லை என்பதையும் தூய ஆவியாரின் பெருவிழா நமக்கு
உணர்த்துகிறது.
தூய ஆவியாரால்
மனித குலம் ஆட்கொள்ளப்பட்டால், அங்கு உருவாகும் அழகிய வாழ்வைத் திருத்தூதர் பவுல் கலாத்தியருக்கு
எழுதிய திருமுகத்தில் விவரிக்கிறார். தூய ஆவியாரின் பெருவிழா வெறும் ஒருநாள் கொண்டாட்டமாக
இல்லாமல், நம் வாழ்வில் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்கும் ஓர்
ஆழ்ந்த அனுபவமாக மாறுவதற்கு அந்த ஆவியாரின் கொடைகளை, கனிகளை நாம்
பெற வேண்டும். இந்த எண்ணங்களைக் கூறும் பவுல் அடியாரின் சொற்களோடு நம் சிந்தனைகளை இன்று
நிறைவு செய்வோம்:

எழுதிய திருமுகம் 5 : 16, 22-23, 25
தூய
ஆவியின் தூண்டுதலுக்கேற்ப வாழுங்கள்: தூய ஆவியின் கனியோ, அன்பு, மகிழ்ச்சி, அமைதி, பொறுமை, பரிவு, நன்னயம், நம்பிக்கை, கனிவு, தன்னடக்கம் என்பவை ஆகும்... தூய
ஆவியின் துணையால் நாம் வாழ்கிறோம். எனவே அந்த ஆவி காட்டும் நெறியிலேயே நடக்க முயலுவோம்.
