Pentecost Sunday

Today, the Feast of the Pentecost, is celebrated on the fiftieth day after Easter. The word ‘Pentecost’ means the fiftieth day. In the last 50 days we have celebrated quite a few festivals, starting from Easter. We celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday, the Good Shepherd Sunday, Ascension Sunday and now Pentecost Sunday. Celebrations continue with the Holy Trinity Sunday next week and the Corpus Christi Sunday the week after. Whenever we use the word ‘celebrate’, we do have certain notions about it. How were the first Easter, Ascension and Pentecost – the core events of our Christian Faith – ‘celebrated’? Were they ‘celebrated’ at all? I wonder…

The commercial world would insist that the first Easter should have taken place in full splendor, with blaring trumpets and dazzling pyrotechnics. But, it was a non-event, judging by the standards of celebration set by the world. The first Ascension, once again, was a very quiet affair with Jesus spending quality moments with the disciples on a hillock, before being taken up into heaven. The first Pentecost too was simply the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Mother Mary and the disciples gathered in prayer in the upper room. These events are not even a pale shadow of what is defined as ‘celebration’ by the world.

The definition of ‘celebration’ according to the commercial world is pretty clear… Grand, Glamorous, Great, Gigantic… Even if there is nothing to celebrate about, the commercial world would invent reasons to celebrate. The frills are more important than the core in these celebrations. In most of these celebrations ‘what’ is celebrated is less important than the ‘how’ of it. When I think of these commercial celebrations, I am reminded of the famous Shakespearean line from Macbeth: ‘sound and fury signifying nothing’. Such celebrations are fleeting, leaving no lasting impact on the individual. Perhaps it leaves one empty!

Jesus and his disciples defined ‘celebrations’ in a totally different way. They were more interested in the ‘what’ of the event than the ‘how’ of the event. This ‘what’ left a lasting, life-long impression on the disciples. The ‘what’ of these celebrations has left a deep impression on human history for the past twenty centuries. They have become the tenets of our Christian Faith!

While talking of ‘celebrations’, we need to talk about ‘non-celebrations’ too. While the commercial world invents reasons for ‘celebrations’, we are sadly reminded of the darker side of the world, where there are issues that are seemingly impossible to celebrate. One such issue is the issue of our Environment. June 5, coming Monday, is the World Environment Day. Although we wish to ‘celebrate’ this Day, it has left us with anxious feelings.

On June 1, last Thursday, the President of the United States, Mr Donald Trump, said that his country was pulling out of the Climate Change accord reached in Paris in 2015. This is one more instance to show how powerful individuals can ‘play God’ and can make or break our planet! Such decisions puts interests of individuals or specific groups over and above the care of our Common Home – the Planet! (Laudato Si)

It is significant that this year the Feast of Pentecost is followed by the World Environment Day. The Bible, in its opening lines introduces us to the Holy Spirit saying, that “the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2) The Holy Spirit is the prime-mover in the creation history. Human beings have pushed aside the Spirit of Creation from the face of the earth and have put themselves as creators.

The World Environment Day invites us to look at ourselves as creatures living in harmony with other created beings. Every year the World Environment Day is observed (I am hesitant to say ‘celebrated’) on June 5. It was the day that the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began in Stockholm in 1972. Although the World Environment Day, established in 1972, is completing 45 years of its existence, the human family has not treated our environment as a 45 year adult would! We have not made much progress in learning how to protect our environment. 25 years back, a 13 year old girl tried to teach the world some lessons. The Earth Summit 1992 held in Rio, Brasil was swept away by Severn Cullis-Suzuki, a 13 year old girl from Canada. Here are some excerpts from Severn Suzuki’s talk:

“Hello, I'm Severn Suzuki speaking for E.C.O. - The Environmental Children's Organisation. We are a group of twelve and thirteen-year-olds from Canada trying to make a difference… We raised all the money ourselves to come five thousand miles to tell you adults you must change your ways. Coming here today, I have no hidden agenda. I am fighting for my future…

I am afraid to go out in the sun now because of the holes in the ozone. I am afraid to breathe the air because I don't know what chemicals are in it.  I used to go fishing in Vancouver with my dad until just a few years ago we found the fish full of cancers…  Did you have to worry about these little things when you were my age?

All this is happening before our eyes and yet we act as if we have all the time we want and all the solutions. I'm only a child and I don't have all the solutions, but I want you to realise, neither do you!

• You don't know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer.
• You don't know how to bring salmon back up a dead stream.
• You don't know how to bring back an animal now extinct.
• And you can't bring back forests that once grew where there is now desert.

If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it!

In my country (Canada), we make so much waste, we buy and throw away, buy and throw away, and yet northern countries will not share with the needy. Even when we have more than enough, we are afraid to lose some of our wealth, afraid to share.

Two days ago here in Brazil, we were shocked when we spent some time with some children living on the streets. And this is what one child told us: "I wish I was rich and if I were, I would give all the street children food, clothes, medicine, shelter and love and affection." If a child on the street who has nothing, is willing to share, why are we who have everything still so greedy? I can't stop thinking that these children are my age, that it makes a tremendous difference where you are born, that I could be one of those children living in the Favellas of Rio; I could be a child starving in Somalia; a victim of war in the Middle East or a beggar in India.

I'm only a child yet I know if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environmental answers, what a wonderful place this earth would be!

At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us to behave in the world. You teach us:

• not to fight with others,
• to work things out,
• to respect others,
• to clean up our mess,
• not to hurt other creatures
• to share - not be greedy.

Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do?

Do not forget why you're attending these conferences, who you're doing this for -- we are your own children. You are deciding what kind of world we will grow up in. Parents should be able to comfort their children by saying "everything's going to be alright", "we're doing the best we can" and "it's not the end of the world". But I don't think you can say that to us anymore. Are we even on your list of priorities? My father always says "You are what you do, not what you say."

Well, what you do makes me cry at night. You grown ups say you love us. I challenge you, please make your actions reflect your words. Thank you for listening.”

One of the most powerful lines from this speech was: “If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it!” If only we could listen to our future generations and stop breaking the universe, the environment and the human family… If we cannot leave a wholesome universe for our next generation, let us at least leave a broken world instead of a completely devastated one for them!

Warning bells do ring now and then about this impending devastation… the last one being from Fukushima, Japan. The earthquake and the tsunami in Japan were loud warning bells indeed. But, the consequent fear of leakage of the atomic radiation is a warning we cannot afford to ignore.

The theme for the World Environment Day 2017 is: “Connecting People to Nature”!

We pray that the Holy Spirit comes down in a special way to renew the face of the earth and help us connect with nature, so that we can truly celebrate both the Feast of the Pentecost as the World Environment Day meaningfully!

தூய ஆவியாரின் வருகைப் பெருவிழா

உயிர்ப்புப் பெருவிழாவிலிருந்து ஐம்பதாம் நாளான இன்று, தூய ஆவியாரின் வருகைப் பெருவிழாவைக் கொண்டாடுகிறோம். இவ்விழாவுக்கு வழங்கப்படும் மற்றொரு பெயர் பெந்தக்கோஸ்து. ‘பெந்தக்கோஸ்து’ என்ற சொல்லுக்கு, ஐம்பதாம் நாள் என்று பொருள். இந்த ஐம்பது நாட்களில், பல விழா நாட்கள் தொடர்ந்து வந்துள்ளன. உயிர்ப்புப் பெருவிழாவைத் தொடர்ந்து, இறை இரக்கத்தின் ஞாயிறு, நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறு, சென்ற வாரம், விண்ணேற்றப் பெருவிழா, இந்த ஞாயிறு, தூய அவியாரின் வருகைப் பெருவிழா என்று... வரிசையாக, நாம் பல விழாக்களைக் கொண்டாடி மகிழ்ந்தோம். இனிவரும் நாட்களிலும், மூவொரு இறைவனின் திருவிழா, கிறிஸ்துவின் திரு உடல், திரு இரத்தத் திருவிழா என்று விழாக்கள் தொடரும். ஒவ்வொரு விழாவையும் கொண்டாடினோம், அல்லது, கொண்டாடுகிறோம், என்று சொல்லும்போது, எதைக் கொண்டாடுகிறோம், எப்படி கொண்டாடுகிறோம் என்பதைச் சிந்திப்பது நல்லது.

இயேசுவின் உயிர்ப்பு, விண்ணேற்றம், தூய ஆவியாரின் வருகை என்ற இந்த மூன்று விழாக்களும் நமது கிறிஸ்தவ விசுவாசத்தின் ஆணிவேரான உண்மைகள். இந்த மறையுண்மைகள் முதன்முதலில் நிகழ்ந்தபோது, எக்காளம் ஒலிக்க, வாண வேடிக்கைகள் கண்ணைப் பறிக்க உலகத்தின் கவனத்தை ஈர்த்திருக்க வேண்டுமல்லவா? ஆனால், அப்படி நடந்ததாகத் தெரியவில்லை! மாறாக, இந்நிகழ்வுகள் முதன் முதலில் நடந்தபோது, எவ்வித ஆர்ப்பாட்டமும் இல்லாமல், அமைதியாய் நடந்தன.

எப்போது, எப்படி நடந்ததென்றே தெரியாமல் நிகழ்ந்த ஒரு முக்கிய மறையுண்மை, உயிர்ப்பு. நெருங்கிய சீடர்களுக்கு மட்டும் இயேசு தந்த ஓர் அமைதியான அனுபவம், விண்ணேற்றம். இன்று நாம் எண்ணிப்பார்க்கும் தூய ஆவியாரின் வருகை, அன்னை மரியாவுக்கும், சீடர்களுக்கும் அந்த மேலறையில் உண்டான மாற்றங்களைக் கூறும் ஒரு விழா. கிறிஸ்தவ விசுவாசத்தின் கருப்பொருளான, அடித்தளமான இம்மறையுண்மைகள் அனைத்துமே, உலகின் கவனத்தை அதிகம் ஈர்க்காமல் நடைபெற்ற நிகழ்வுகள்.

உலக விழாக்களில், பகட்டு, பிரமிப்பு, பிரம்மாண்டம் இவையே உயிர்நாடியாக அமைகின்றன. விழாவின் உள் நோக்கத்தை விட, வெளித் தோற்றங்கள், ஆர்ப்பாட்டங்கள், ஆரவாரங்கள், ஆகியவை, மக்களை ஈர்க்கவேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கமே முக்கியம். இவ்விழாக்களைப்பற்றி அடுத்த நாள் கேட்டால்கூட நமக்கு ஒன்றும் நினைவிருக்காது. அல்லது, அவர்கள் செய்த ஆர்ப்பாட்டமே நமது நினைவில் நிறைந்து, நமக்கு எரிச்சலூட்டும். உலகக் கொண்டாட்டங்களின் இலக்கணம் இது.

‘கொண்டாட்டம்’ என்ற சொல்லுக்கு புது இலக்கணம் தரும் வகையில், இவ்விழாக்களை கொண்டாடிய இயேசுவும், அவரது அன்னையும், சீடர்களும், நமக்குப் பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித் தருகின்றனர். கொண்டாட்டம் என்பது, பிறரது கவனத்தை ஈர்ப்பதை மட்டுமே நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டிராமல், நாம் கொண்டாடும் விழாவின் மையக்கருத்து, எவ்வளவு தூரம் நம் வாழ்வை மாற்றுகிறது என்பதில் நம் கவனம் இருக்கவேண்டும். அவ்விதம் அமையும் கொண்டாட்டங்கள், ஒருநாள் கேளிக்கைகளாக இல்லாமல், வாழ்நாளெல்லாம் நமக்குள் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்க வழி வகுக்கும். இயேசுவின் உயிர்ப்பு, விண்ணேற்றம், தூய ஆவியாரின் வருகை ஆகிய விழாக்கள், முதல்முறை கொண்டாடப்பட்டபோது, ஆர்ப்பாட்டம் ஏதுமில்லாமல், ஆழமான அர்த்தங்களை விதைத்ததால், இருபது நூற்றாண்டுகள் சென்றபின்னரும், இவ்விழாக்களில் நாம் புதுப்புது அர்த்தங்களைக் காண முடிகிறது.

கொண்டாட்டங்களைப்பற்றிச் சிந்திக்கும் வேளையில், கொண்டாடமுடியாத சில நாட்களைப்பற்றியும் நாம் பேசியாகவேண்டும். அவற்றில் ஒன்று, ஜூன் 5, இத்திங்களன்று நாம் கொண்டாடவேண்டிய, ஆனால், கொண்டாடமுடியாமல் தவிக்கின்ற  உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாள்.

ஜூன் 1, கடந்த வியாழனன்று, அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டு அரசுத்தலைவர், டொனால்டு டிரம்ப் அவர்கள், காலநிலை மாற்ற ஒப்பந்தத்திலிருந்து தங்கள் நாடு விலகுவதாக அறிவித்துள்ளார். 2015ம் ஆண்டு, பாரிஸ் மாநகரில், 197 நாடுகள் ஒன்று கூடி, சுற்றுச்சூழலைப் பாதுகாக்க, கால நிலை மாற்றத்தைக் கட்டுப்படுத்த முடிவெடுத்தன. அந்த முடிவிலிருந்து, தங்கள் அரசு விலகிக்கொள்வதாக டிரம்ப் அவர்கள் அறிவித்திருப்பது, சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதுகாப்பிற்கு பெரும் அச்சுறுத்தலாக அமைந்துள்ளது. சுற்றுச்சூழலுக்கு மிகப்பெரும் தீமையை விளைவிக்கும் கரியமில வாயுவை (கார்பன் டை ஆக்ஸைடு), மிக அதிக அளவில் வெளியேற்றிவரும் அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாடு, சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதுகாப்பு ஒப்பந்தத்திலிருந்து விலகியிருப்பது, வேதனை தரும் உண்மை. இந்நிலையில், உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாளை, அழுது புலம்பும் ஒரு நாளாக மட்டுமே நம்மால் கடைபிடிக்கமுடியும் என்று எண்ணத் தோன்றுகிறது.

ஜூன் 4, ஞாயிறன்று, தூய ஆவியாரின் வருகைப் பெருவிழாவும், ஜூன் 5, திங்களன்று, உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாளும் ஒன்றையொன்று தொடர்ந்து வருவது, நம்மைச் சிந்திக்க அழைக்கிறது. விவிலியத்தின் ஆரம்ப வரிகளில் தூய ஆவியார் நமக்கு அறிமுகமாகிறார். "நீர்த்திரளின்மேல் கடவுளின் ஆவி அசைந்தாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தது" (தொ.நூ. 1:2) என்று தொடக்க நூலில் வாசிக்கிறோம். படைப்பு அனைத்தின் ஊற்றாக, அடிப்படையாக விளங்கும் தூய ஆவியாரை, படைக்கப்பட்ட உலகிலிருந்து அகற்றிவிட்டு, இவ்வுலகையும், சுற்றுச்சூழலையும் நாம் உருவாக்கியதுபோல் மமதையுடன் நடந்துகொள்கிறோம்.

படைப்பின் சிகரமாக மனிதர்களை உருவாக்கிய இறைவன், அவர்களுக்கு தன் முதல் ஆசியை வழங்கிய வேளையில், "பலுகிப் பெருகி, மண்ணுலகை நிரப்புங்கள்; அதை உங்கள் ஆற்றலுக்கு உட்படுத்துங்கள்" (தொ.நூ. 1:28) என்று கூறினார். மண்ணுலகை, உயிரினங்களை, நமது சுற்றுச்சூழலை 'நம் ஆற்றலுக்கு உட்படுத்துவதற்கு'ப் பதில், நம் அகங்காரத்திற்கும், அடங்காத பேராசைக்கும் அடிமையாக்கிவிட்டோம். கட்டுக்கடங்காத நமது பேராசையால், நமது பூமியையும், நாம் வாழும் சூழலையும் காயப்படுத்தி வருகிறோம்.

ஸ்வீடன் அரசின் முயற்சியால், ஐ.நா. பொதுஅவை, உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் கருத்தரங்கு ஒன்றை 1972ம் ஆண்டு ஜூன் 5ம் தேதி துவக்கியது. இதற்குப் பின், ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும் ஜூன் 5ம் தேதியை உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாளாகக் கொண்டாட முயற்சிகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளன. உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாளைக் கொண்டாட அதிகம் காரணங்கள் இல்லை. ஆனால், இந்த நாளைப்பற்றி பாடங்கள் பயில ஆயிரம் காரணங்கள் உள்ளன. பாடங்கள் பயிலவேண்டிய அவசியத்தை உலகம் இப்போது உணர்ந்துவருகிறது. நாம் கற்றுக்கொள்ளவேண்டிய பாடத்தை Severn Cullis-Suzuki என்ற 13 வயது சிறுமி, 25 ஆண்டுகளுக்குமுன், உலகத் தலைவர்களுக்குச் சொல்லித்தந்தார்.

ஸ்வீடன் நாட்டு கருத்தரங்கு முடிந்து, 20 ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பின் 1992ல் பிரேசில் நாட்டில் பூமிக்கோளத்தின் உச்சி மாநாடு (Earth Summit 1992) ஒன்று நடந்தது. இந்த மாநாட்டில் கலந்துகொள்ள 172 நாடுகளிலிருந்து பல உயர்மட்டத் தலைவர்கள் வந்திருந்தனர். அவர்களை, அதிர்ச்சியில், அமைதியில் ஆழ்த்தியது, அச்சிறுமி வழங்கிய 6 நிமிட உரை. இதோ Severn Suzukiயின் உரையிலிருந்து ஒரு சிலப் பகுதிகள்:

“நான் என் எதிர்காலத்திற்காகப் போராட வந்திருக்கிறேன். இன்று உலகில் பட்டினியால் இறக்கும் என்னைப்போன்ற ஆயிரமாயிரம் குழந்தைகள் சார்பில் பேச வந்திருக்கிறேன். ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் உலகின் பல பகுதிகளில் அழிந்துவரும் உயிரினங்கள் சார்பில் நான் பேச வந்திருக்கிறேன்.

வெளியில் சென்று சூரிய ஒளியில் நிற்பதற்கோ, வெளிக் காற்றைச் சுவாசிப்பதற்கோ எனக்குப் பயமாக உள்ளது. சுற்றுச்சூழலில் ஏற்பட்டுவரும் மாற்றங்களைப்பற்றி ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் நான் கேள்விப்படுகிறேன். அதனால், எனக்குப் பயமாக உள்ளது. நீங்கள் சிறுவர்களாய் இருந்தபோது என்னைப் போல் சூரியனையும், காற்றையும் பற்றி பயந்தீர்களா? கவலைப்பட்டீர்களா?”

இவ்விதம் தன் உரையைச் சூடாக ஆரம்பித்த சிறுமி Severn Suzuki, உலகத் தலைவர்களை நோக்கிச் சில உண்மைகளை இடித்துரைத்தார். அன்று அம்புகளாய் அவர்களை நோக்கிப் பாய்ந்த அவ்வுண்மைகள், இன்று, நம்மையும் நோக்கி பாய்ந்து வருகின்றன.

“நான் வாழும் இவ்வுலகில் நடக்கும் பயங்கரங்களுக்கு என்ன பதில் என்று சிறுமி எனக்குத் தெரியாது. உங்களுக்கும் அந்தப் பதில்கள் தெரியாது என்ற உண்மையை கூறவே நான் இங்கு வந்திருக்கிறேன்.

விண்வெளியில் ஓசோன் படலத்தில் விழுந்துள்ள ஓட்டையை அடைக்க உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது.

இறந்து போகும் உயிரினங்களை மீண்டும் உயிர்ப்பிக்க உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது.

காடுகள் அழிந்து பாலை நிலங்களாய் மாறிவருவதைத் தடுக்கும் வழிகள் உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது.

உடைந்து போன இயற்கையைச் சரி செய்ய உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாதபோது, அதை மேலும் உடைக்காமல் விடுங்கள். அது போதும் எங்கள் தலைமுறைக்கு.”

Severn Suzukiபேசியபோது பல உலகத் தலைவர்களின் கண்களில் கண்ணீர் வழிந்தது. பலர், அச்சிறுமியை, ஏறெடுத்துப் பார்க்கவும் துணியாமல், குற்ற உணர்வோடு, தலை குனிந்து அமர்ந்திருந்தனர். தொடர்ந்து உண்மைகளைப் பேசினார் அச்சிறுமி:

“நான் வாழும் கனடாவில் நாங்கள் அதிகப் பொருட்களை வீணாக்குகிறோம். பல பொருட்களை முழுதாகப் பயன்படுத்தாமல் தூக்கி எறிகிறோம். அதே நேரத்தில், எத்தனையோ நாடுகளில் தேவைகள் அதிகம் இருக்கும் கோடிக்கணக்கானோர் வாழ வழியின்றி இறக்கின்றனர். தூக்கி ஏறிய எண்ணம் உள்ள எங்களுக்கு, இவற்றைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள எண்ணம் எழுவதில்லை.

நான் சிறுமிதான். ஆனால், எனக்குத் தெரியும் சில உண்மைகள் ஏன் உங்களுக்குத் தெரிவதில்லை? நாம் இன்று போருக்குச் செலவிடும் பணத்தைக் கொண்டு இவ்வுலகின் ஏழ்மையை முற்றிலும் ஒழிக்கமுடியும், நமது இயற்கையை காக்கமுடியும் என்ற பதில்கள் எனக்குத் தெரிகிறதே; ஏன் உங்களுக்குத் தெரிவதில்லை?

குழந்தைகளாய் நாங்கள் வளரும்போது, எங்களுக்குப் பல பாடங்கள் சொல்லித் தருகிறீர்கள்:

மற்ற குழந்தைகளுடன் சண்டை போடக்கூடாது;

மற்றவர்களை மதிப்புடன் நடத்த வேண்டும்;

நாங்கள் போட்ட குப்பையை நாங்களே சுத்தம் செய்ய வேண்டும்;

மற்ற வாயில்லா உயிரினங்கள் மேல் பரிவு காட்ட வேண்டும்;

எங்களிடம் உள்ளதை மற்றவர்களோடு பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும்; எல்லாவற்றையும் நாங்களே வைத்துக் கொள்ளக் கூடாது...

என்று எங்களுக்கு எத்தனைப் பாடங்கள் சொல்லித் தருகிறீர்கள். பிறகு, நீங்கள் ஏன் இந்தப் பாடங்களுக்கு எதிராக நடந்து கொள்கிறீர்கள்?”

இவ்வாறு, பாலர்பள்ளிப் பாடங்களை உலகத்தலைவர்களுக்குச் சொல்லித்தந்த சிறுமி Severn Suzuki, இறுதியாக, அவர்கள் மனசாட்சியைத் தட்டியெழுப்பும் வகையில் பேசி முடித்தார்.

“நீங்கள் ஏன் இந்தக் கருத்தரங்கை நடத்துகிறீர்கள் என்பதைக் கொஞ்சம் சிந்தித்துப் பாருங்கள். எங்களுக்கு, உங்கள் குழந்தைகளுக்கு நல்லவை செய்யவேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் இங்கே கூடியிருக்கிறீர்கள். நாங்கள் எவ்வகையான உலகில் வாழப்போகிறோம் என்பதை நீங்கள் தீர்மானிக்க வந்திருக்கிறீர்கள்.

பயந்து, கலங்கிப் போயிருக்கும் குழந்தைகளை, பெற்றோர் அரவணைத்துத் தேற்றும்போது, ‘எல்லாம் சரியாகிப் போகும்’ என்று சொல்லி, குழந்தைகளைச் சமாதானம் செய்வார்கள். எங்கள் தலைமுறைக்கு இந்த வார்த்தைகளை உங்களால் சொல்ல முடியுமா? ‘எல்லாம் சரியாகிப் போகும்’ என்று மனதார உங்களால், எங்களைப் பார்த்து சொல்ல முடியுமா? எங்கள் மீது அன்பு கொண்டிருப்பதாக நீங்கள் அடிக்கடி சொல்கிறீர்கள். நீங்கள் சொல்வது உண்மையென்றால், அதைச் செயலில் காட்டுங்கள்.  இது நான் உங்கள் முன்வைக்கும் ஒரு சவால். இதுவரைப் பொறுமையுடன் எனக்குச் செவிமடுத்ததற்கு நன்றி.”

அந்த ஆறு நிமிடங்கள் உலகச் சமுதாயத்தின் மனசாட்சியைத் தட்டியெழுப்பி, தலைவர்கள் அணிந்திருந்த முகமூடிகளைக் கிழித்தெறிந்தார், அச்சிறுமி. இது நடந்து இப்போது 25 ஆண்டுகள் கழிந்துவிட்டன. ‘Connecting People to Nature’ - "மக்களை இயற்கையோடு இணைக்க" என்பது, இவ்வாண்டு, ஜூன் 5ம் தேதி கடைபிடிக்கப்படும் உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாளுக்கெனத் தெரிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள மையக்கருத்து. தூய ஆவியார் வருகைப் பெருவிழாவையும், உலகச் சுற்றுச்சூழல் நாளையும் ஒன்றன்பின் ஒன்றாக சிறப்பிக்கும் வாய்ப்பைப் பெற்றுள்ள நாம், தூய ஆவியாரின் தூண்டுதலால், வழிநடத்துதலால், இயற்கையோடு இணைந்து வாழ, சுற்றுச்சூழலைப் பேணிக்காக்க கற்றுக்கொள்வோம்.
