An Unwanted Gift? Joseph's Change of Mind

It was a few days before Christmas. A woman woke up one morning and told her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me a pearl necklace for Christmas. What do you think this dream means?” “Oh,” her husband replied, “you’ll know the day after tomorrow.” The next morning, she turned to her husband again and said she had the same dream and received the same reply. On the third morning, the woman woke up and smiled at her husband, “I just dreamed again that you gave me a pearl necklace for Christmas. What do you think this dream means?” And he smiled back, “You’ll know tonight.” That evening, the man came home with a small package and presented it to his wife. She was delighted. She opened it gently. And when she did, she found—a book! And the book’s title was The Meaning of Dreams. (Rev Samuel Candler) The capacity to dream is a great gift given only to human beings. Some of us dare to dream and also are willing to pay the price of our dreams, as in the case of St Joseph, whom we meet in today’s Gospel.

Christmas is just around the corner… Coming Wednesday we celebrate Christmas. ‘Around the corner’ is a lovely expression to add excitement and expectation. We know that thousands of children are spending the last few days and nights dreaming of their Christmas gifts. They are also dreaming of Santa Claus bringing these gifts to them. Of course, some of us, grown-ups, are trying the kill these dreams of children, calling those dreams ‘dangerously childish’. In general, adults look at dreams as childish. Imagine a world without dreams! It would be unimaginable! James Langston Hughes, an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright says: “Hold fast to dreams. For if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams. For when dreams go, life is a barren field, frozen with snow.”

Talking of dreams and Santa, brings back memories of a news item that appeared three years back - Terminally-ill boy, five, dies in Santa Claus' arms after fulfilling one last wish to see him from Mail Online. It was reported as happened in a hospital in Tennesse, U.S.A.

A terminally-ill boy, five, wanted to see Santa Claus. Eric Schmitt-Matzen, who has been acting like Santa Claus every Christmas season, was called by a nurse to come to the hospital right away. When Eric reached the hospital, dressed as Santa Claus, the boy's mother gave him a gift to give to her son. Eric entered the room and had a tête-à-tête with the boy, handed him his gift and in a few minutes, the boy died in Eric’s arms. Schmitt-Matzen said he burst into tears and cried for the entire drive home.

Such stories soften our hearts, and bring tears to our eyes. But later, our adult mind brings in other ‘mature’ considerations. When this story was reported in Mail Online in December 2016, some comments raised doubts about the veracity of this news story. Some commented saying that we should not ‘spoil’ a child’s mind with stories of Santa. Even if this news item was not true, the five year old boy dying in the arms of Santa Claus, even as a fictional story, is moving as well as uplifting.

There was another news items from India that appeared in various news papers in 2016: “Indian businessman spends daughter's marriage budget on 90 houses for the homeless”

Ajay Munot, a wealthy wholesale trader of cloth and wheat in the Aurangabad district of eastern India, had planned to spend Rs 70-80 lakh — the equivalent of more than £93,000 — on a lavish wedding for his daughter. But instead, Mr Munot decided to instead spend the money on helping the region's poor. He built 90 houses for the homeless poor. His daughter Shreya and her husband handed over the keys of the houses to the poor. Shreya said that that was the best wedding gift her Dad had given her, and that the blessings she received from the poor people, no money could buy!

When I read this news, I was pleasantly surprised, even stunned to believe it. Why was I stunned? Because, things like this do not happen in the normal world. ‘Normal’ is the catch word! What is normal? To spend lavishly on the wedding is normal, while spending money on such noble deeds sounds more like a dream-stuff.

After reading the news, I also glanced through the comments left by readers. The comments began with positive appreciation. Here is a specimen: There is hope for humanity yet! Good luck to the newly weds. What an admirable start!

But, within a few hours, there were comments like these:

Marriage ends in divorce anyway.

Single house units wasting precious land and infrastructure is the wrong way to go anywhere in the world!

I have visited this place. He hand picked Hindu families. He completely ignored the Sikh, Christian or Muslim families.

When we read the occasional positive news from our otherwise negative media, our minds and hearts get elated. But soon the ‘adult’ in us begin to impute reasons and pass judgements, sometimes, very uncharitable. The ‘adult’ in us seems to be fettered by the so called ‘normal’, negative day to day world and refuse to take flights of fantasy or dare to dream!

Today’s Gospel talks of Joseph meeting an angel in his dreams. The New Testament identifies Joseph as ‘the just man’. Joseph is a silent saint. No word of his is recorded in the gospels. Indeed no word was needed, since his actions speak louder than words!

Joseph is honoured by the Church, as well by popular devotion, as the patron and guardian of so many aspects of human life. He is the patron of the Catholic Church, of virgins, of families, of labourers, of immigrants, of holy death and many, many more... I wish to add one more to this list. I wish to honour St Joseph as the guardian and patron of dreams. It is interesting that both Joseph, the Patriarch (in the Old Testament) as well as Joseph, the Husband of Mary (in the New Testament) are portrayed as ‘dreamers’.

Joseph is mentioned in Matthew’s gospel only on three occasions. In all of them, he is portrayed as being visited by the angel of God in his dreams. One of those instances is given as today’s gospel:

Matthew 1: 18-24. Two other instances where Joseph is mentioned, also speak of the angel visiting him in dreams: Matthew 2: 13-14 and Matthew 2: 19-21

Analysis of these three passages will give us good reasons to say that Joseph is indeed the guardian and patron of dreams. Joseph must have felt extremely happy to have been betrothed to Mary, probably the most admired young girl in Nazareth. But his joy was short lived. His dreams of having a glorious life with Mary, came crashing down when he learnt that Mary was pregnant! It was left to him to either make this public, or, solve this problem more quietly. He decided on the latter. He was a gentleman to the core. If Joseph had decided on making this public, he would have been honoured; but Mary would have faced death by stoning.

As Joseph was struggling to solve this problem, the angel came to him in a dream. If Joseph was a selfish person thinking only of his honour and did not care about Mary, the angel would have found it difficult to enter Joseph’s conscious or subconscious world. God would find it difficult to enter a selfish person’s heart. The more selfless and sensitive a heart, the brighter the chances of divine interventions… not only during waking hours but also during dreams!

All human beings dream. Then why make Joseph the patron of dreams? I can think of two reasons. There could surely be more.

Reason 1: Joseph was capable of interpreting his dreams as good news even during his agony. For many of us this may not be easy. When we are hemmed in by trials all around us, we tend to lose our normal, day to day activities, especially our sleep. Even if we manage to get some sleep, we may get more nightmares than dreams. Joseph must have been in such a predicament after learning that Mary was pregnant. Still, he recognised his dreams as divine promptings and interventions. Only persons without deceit, persons who are just, are capable of this. Don’t we wish we could be like Joseph?

Reason 2: It is easy to dream dreams; but not easy to act on them. In all the three gospel passages we cited, Joseph woke up from sleep and followed the instructions from the angel. If these instructions were easy, cosy things, then we won’t mind following them. Easy, cosy instructions are dictated to us through our ‘commercial dreams’… a cream would change our complexion in a matter of days, or a toothpaste would make our friends flock around us all the time. We tend to follow these dreams, don’t we? The instructions that Joseph received in his dreams were demanding, tough decisions – taking a pregnant woman as his wife, taking a baby and his mother at night and travelling to a strange land… Don’t we wish we could be like Joseph? Don’t we wish to honour St Joseph, the Patron of dreams?

Fr Ronald Rolheiser, a Roman Catholic priest and member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, in his homily on ‘Joseph and Christmas’ brings out another aspect of Joseph as revealed in today’s gospel:

Joseph is presented to us as an "upright" man, a designation that scholars say implies that he has conformed himself to the Law of God, the supreme Jewish standard of holiness. In every way he is blameless, a paradigm of goodness, which he demonstrates in the Christmas story by refusing to expose Mary to shame, even as he decides to divorce her quietly.

Then, after receiving revelation in a dream, he agrees to take her home as his wife and to name the child as his own. Partly we understand the significance of that, he spares Mary embarrassment, he names the child as his own, and he provides an accepted physical, social, and religious place for the child to be born and raised. But he does something else that is not so evident: He shows how a person can be a pious believer, deeply faithful to everything within his religious tradition, and yet at the same time be open to a mystery beyond both his human and religious understanding.

What does one do when God breaks into one's life in new, previously unimaginable ways? How does one deal with an impossible conception?... In essence what Joseph teaches us is how to live in loving fidelity to all that we cling to humanly and religiously, even as we are open to a mystery of God that takes us beyond all the categories of our religious practice and imagination.

Isn't that one of the ongoing challenges of Christmas?

By recognising his dreams as divine promptings, and by taking concrete actions on his dreams, Joseph saved not only Mary and Jesus, but also saved the world by letting the Saviour become ‘Emmanuel’ among us! May St Joseph, the Patron of Dreams, help us dream dreams and be ready to pay the price to make them come true!

கிறிஸ்து பிறப்புப் பெருவிழாவுக்கு சில நாள்களே இருந்தன. வீட்டுத்தலைவி அன்று காலையில் எழுந்ததும், தன் கணவரிடம், "நீங்கள், கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழாவுக்கு அழகான முத்துமாலை வாங்கித் தருவதைப்போல் கனவு கண்டேன். இந்தக் கனவுக்கு என்ன அர்த்தம் என்று உங்களுக்குத் தெரியுமா?" என்று கேட்டார். கணவர் ஒரு புன்முறுவலுடன், "கிறிஸ்மஸ் வரட்டும். சொல்கிறேன்" என்று மட்டும் சொன்னார்.

அடுத்த நாள், அதற்கு அடுத்த நாள் என்று, ஒவ்வொரு நாளும், வீட்டுத்தலைவி காலையில் எழுந்ததும், முத்து மாலையைப் பற்றிய தன் கனவை நினைவுபடுத்தி, "இந்தக் கனவுக்கு என்ன அர்த்தம் என்று உங்களுக்குத் தெரியுமா?" என்று கேட்டபடியே இருந்தார். கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழாவுக்கு முந்தின நாளும் மனைவி, தன் கனவின் அர்த்தம் என்ன என்று கேட்டதும், கணவர், "இன்று மாலை உன் சந்தேகம் தீர்ந்துவிடும்" என்று கூறினார்.

அன்று மாலை, கணவர் வீட்டுக்கு வந்ததும், தன் கையிலிருந்த பரிசுப்பொருளை மனைவியிடம் கொடுத்தார். வீட்டுத்தலைவிக்கு மட்டற்ற மகிழ்ச்சி. அந்தப் பரிசுப்பொருள் சுற்றப்பட்டிருந்த காகிதத்தைப் பிரித்து, உள்ளே பார்த்தார். அங்கு, ஒரு புத்தகம் இருந்தது. அந்த புத்தகத்தின் தலைப்பு: "கனவுகளின் அர்த்தம்". மனிதர்களுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள ஓர் அரிய கொடை, கனவுகள். கனவுகள் காண்பதற்கும், நம் கனவுகளை செயல்படுத்தும் துணிவைப் பெறுவதற்கும், இஞ்ஞாயிறு அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம்.

டிசம்பர் 25, வருகிற புதனன்று, கிறிஸ்து பிறப்புப் பெருவிழாவைக் கொண்டாடவிருக்கிறோம். இந்த விழா, ஏனைய கிறிஸ்தவ விழாக்களைக் காட்டிலும், உலகினர் அனைவராலும் கொண்டாடப்படும் ஒரு சமுதாய விழாவாக மாறியுள்ளது. கிறிஸ்மஸ்  காலத்திற்கே உரிய கனவுகள், உலகெங்கும் வலம் வரும் நேரம் இது. இவ்வேளையில், கனவுகள், நம் வாழ்வில் உருவாக்கும் தாக்கங்களைக் குறித்து சிந்திக்க, நல்லதொரு தருணம் இது. அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டில் நிகழ்ந்ததாகச் சொல்லப்படும் ஒரு செய்தி, நமது சிந்தனைக்கு உதவியாக உள்ளது. 2016ம் ஆண்டு, டிசம்பர் மாதம், "மரணப் படுக்கையில் இருந்த ஐந்து வயது சிறுவன், கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தாவின் கரங்களில் இறந்தான்" என்ற செய்தி, அமெரிக்க நாளிதழ்களில் வெளியானது. இந்நிகழ்வு, அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டின் டென்னஸி (Tennesse) நகர், மருத்துவமனையொன்றில் நிகழ்ந்ததாகச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும், கிறிஸ்து பிறப்பு விழா நெருங்கும் வேளையில், கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தா பற்றியச் செய்திகளை ஆங்காங்கே வாசிக்கிறோம். இந்தக் கதைகள் கண்களை ஈரமாக்கி, உள்ளத்தில் மென்மையான உணர்வுகளை வளர்க்கின்றன. கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தா உண்மையா, பொய்யா என்ற விவாதங்களை, வயது வந்தவர்கள் மேற்கொள்ளலாம். ஆனால், நாம் வாழும் 21ம் நூற்றாண்டிலும், கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தாக்கள் எத்தனையோ சிறுவர், சிறுமியரின் உள்ளங்களில், கனவுகளையும், நல்லுணர்வுகளையும் உருவாக்கி வருகின்றனர். மரணத்தோடு போராடிய அச்சிறுவன், தன் சாவை அமைதியாகச் சந்திக்க, அவன் வளர்த்திருந்த கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தா கனவு உதவியாக இருந்தது.

கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தாவின் கரங்களில் இறந்த சிறுவனைப் பற்றிய செய்தி வெளியான வலைத்தளங்களில், பாராட்டுக்கள், முதலில் இடம்பெற்றாலும், ஒருசிலர், 'கிறிஸ்மஸ் தாத்தா' என்ற எண்ணத்தை குழந்தைகளுக்கு ஊட்டக்கூடாது என்று கூறியுள்ளனர். இன்னும் சிலர், இச்செய்தி, Matzen அவர்களின் சுயவிளம்பர முயற்சி என்றும், இது உண்மை நிகழ்வு இல்லை என்றும் விமர்சனங்களை வழங்கியுள்ளனர்.

நல்ல செய்திகளைக் கேட்கும்போது, முதலில், நம் உள்ளங்களில், நல்லெண்ணங்களும், அதிர்வுகளும் உருவாகின்றன. ஆனால், நாம், அறிவிலும் வயதிலும் முதிர்ந்தவர்கள் என்ற கோணத்தில் சிந்திக்க ஆரம்பித்ததும், சந்தேகங்கள், விமர்சனங்கள், எதிர்மறை எண்ணங்கள் ஆகியவை எழுந்து, கனவுகளை, கருவிலேயே புதைத்துவிடுகின்றன. "உன் கனவுகளைக் கெட்டியாகப் பற்றிக்கொள். ஏனெனில், கனவுகள் இறந்தால், வாழ்வு, சிறகொடிந்த பறவையாகும். கனவுகளைக் கெட்டியாகப் பற்றிக்கொள். ஏனெனில், கனவுகள் போய்விட்டால், வாழ்வு, பனியில் உறைந்துபோன தரிசு நிலமாகிவிடும்" என்பது, அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டின் கறுப்பின கவிஞர் Langston Hughes அவர்களின் கூற்று.

கனவுகளைப்பற்றி, இன்று நாம் சிந்திப்பதற்குக் காரணம்... இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் சந்திக்கும் புனித யோசேப்பு. மரியாவின் கணவரான யோசேப்பு, அமைதியான ஒரு புனிதர். அவரை, திருஅவையின் காவலர், கன்னியர்களின் காவலர், குடும்பங்களுக்குக் காவலர், தொழிலாளர்களுக்குக் காவலர்... என, பலவழிகளில் பெருமைப்படுத்துகிறோம். மனித வாழ்வின் மற்றொரு முக்கிய அம்சத்திற்கும் இவரைக் காவலர் என்று அழைக்கலாம். புனித யோசேப்பை, கனவுகளின் காவலர் என்று நாம் பெருமைப்படுத்தலாம்.

மத்தேயு நற்செய்தியில் யோசேப்பு கண்ட கனவுகள் பற்றி மூன்றுமுறை கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. கருவுற்றிருந்த மரியாவை ஏற்பதா, விலக்கிவைப்பதா என்று யோசேப்பு போராடிக்கொண்டிருந்த வேளையில், மரியாவை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும்படி, அவருக்கு, கனவில் ஒரு செய்தி வருகிறது. இந்நிகழ்வு, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியாகத் தரப்பட்டுள்ளது. (மத். 1: 18-24) கீழ்த்திசை ஞானிகள் மூவர் வந்து, குழந்தை இயேசுவைக் கண்டு திரும்பிய பின்னர், யோசேப்பின் கனவில் தோன்றிய வானதூதர், அவரை எகிப்திற்கு ஓடிப்போகச் சொல்கிறார். இரவோடு இரவாக மரியாவையும், பச்சிளம் குழந்தை இயேசுவையும் அழைத்துக்கொண்டு, யோசேப்பு, எகிப்துக்குச் செல்கிறார். (மத். 2: 13-14) எகிப்தில், அவர்கள், புலம்பெயர்ந்தோராய் வாழ்ந்தபோது, சொந்த நாட்டில் ஏரோது இறந்துவிடவே, மீண்டும் யோசேப்புக்குக் கனவில் செய்திவர, அவர் இஸ்ரயேல் நாட்டுக்குத் திரும்புகிறார். (மத். 2: 19-21)

இம்மூன்று நிகழ்வுகளையும் ஆழமாகச் சிந்தித்தால், ஒருசிலப் பாடங்களை நாம் கற்றுக்கொள்ளலாம். இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள நிகழ்வை மையப்படுத்தி நம் சிந்தனைகளை மேற்கொள்வோம். மரியாவோடு திருமண ஒப்பந்தம் நடந்து ஒரு சில நாட்களில், மரியா கருவுற்றிருக்கிறார் என்ற கசப்பான உண்மை, பேரிடிபோல் யோசேப்பைத் தாக்குகிறது. இச்சூழலில், யோசேப்பு, தன் பேரையும், புகழையும் மட்டும் காப்பாற்ற நினைத்திருந்தால், ஊர் பெரியவர்களிடம் இதைத் தெரிவித்திருக்கலாம். அவ்வாறு அவர் செய்திருந்தால், தன்னைக் காப்பாற்றியிருப்பார். மரியாவோ, ஊருக்கு நடுவே, கல்லால் எறியப்பட்டு, கொடூரமாய் கொலையுண்டிருப்பார்.

இந்தச் சிக்கலான சூழலில், யோசேப்பின் கனவில் ஆண்டவரின் தூதர் தோன்றினார் என்கிறது இன்றைய நற்செய்தி. தன்னை நீதிமான் என்று ஊரில் நிலைநாட்டினால் போதும், மரியா எக்கேடுகெட்டாகிலும் போகட்டும் என்ற சுயநலக் கோட்டைக்குள் யோசேப்பு வாழ்ந்திருந்தால், இறைவனின் தூதர் அவரை நெருங்கியிருப்பாரா என்பது சந்தேகம்தான். சுயநல மனங்களில், கடவுள் நுழைய நினைத்தாலும், அவரால் முடியாது. மென்மையான மனங்களில், மேலான எண்ணங்களும், கனவுகளும் தோன்றும். அப்படித் தோன்றிய ஒரு கனவையே இன்று நற்செய்தி நமக்குச் சொல்கிறது. இந்தக் கனவில் யோசேப்புக்கு இறைவன் தந்த செய்தியை நாம் இப்படியும் சிந்தித்துப் பார்க்கலாம்: “யோசேப்பே, தாவீதின் மகனே, சட்டங்களை, சமுதாயக் கட்டுப்பாடுகளை மட்டும் மனதில் எண்ணிக் குழம்பாதே. அவற்றையும் தாண்டி, மனிதாபிமானத்தோடு நடந்துகொள். இவ்வாறு நீ நடந்தால், உன்னையும் மரியாவையும் மட்டுமல்ல. இவ்வுலகையும் காப்பாற்றும் வழியொன்றை நீ திறப்பாய்” என்பது, யோசேப்பு கனவில் பெற்ற செய்தி என்று நாம் சிந்திக்கலாம்.

சுயநலனைக் கடந்து, அடுத்தவர் நலனை முன்னிறுத்துவோர் உள்ளங்களில் கனவுகள் தோன்றும்; அக்கனவுகள், செயல்வடிவமும் பெறும் என்பதை, புனித யோசேப்பின் வாழ்வு நமக்கு உணர்த்துகிறது.

எல்லாருமே கனவு காண்கிறோம். யோசேப்பும் கனவு கண்டார். அவரை ஏன் கனவுகளின் காவலர் என்று கூறவேண்டும் என்ற கேள்வி எழலாம். இக்கேள்விக்கு விடையாக, இரு காரணங்களை எண்ணிப்பார்க்கலாம்.

முதல் காரணம் : அதிர்ச்சிகளும், அச்சங்களும் நம்மைச் சூழும்போது, நமது தூக்கம் பெரிதும் பாதிக்கப்படும். அப்படியே நாம் தூங்கினாலும், நமது கனவுகளும் நம்மைப் பயமுறுத்தும். மரியா கருவுற்றிருந்தார் என்பதை அறிந்த யோசேப்பு, கட்டாயம் இந்த ஒரு நிலையில் இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும். நம்பமுடியாத அந்த அதிர்ச்சியின் நடுவிலும், கனவில் தனக்குக் கிடைத்தச் செய்தியை, நல்ல செய்தி என்று நம்பினாரே, அந்தக் காரணத்திற்காக, யோசேப்பைக் கனவுகளின் காவலராகப் போற்றலாம்.

இரண்டாவது காரணம் : யோசேப்பு தன் கனவில் கண்டதைச் செயல்படுத்தினார். கனவு காண்பது எளிது. கனவு முடிந்து எழுந்ததும், கனவின்படி நடப்பது அவ்வளவு எளிதல்ல. கண்ட கனவு சுகமான கனவு என்றால் ஒருவேளை செயல்படுத்துவது எளிதாகலாம். எடுத்துக்காட்டாக, குறிப்பிட்ட ஒரு ‘க்ரீமை’ப் பயன்படுத்தினால், ஒரு சில வாரங்களில் நமது தோல் நிறம் மாறும் என்றும், குறிப்பிட்ட ஒரு பற்பசையைப் பயன்படுத்தினால், நம்மைச் சுற்றி எப்போதும் நண்பர்கள் சூழ்ந்திருப்பர் என்றும், நமது விளம்பர உலகம் சொல்லும் எத்தனைக் கனவுகளை நாம் நம்புகிறோம்! செயல்படுத்துகிறோம்!

ஆனால், யோசேப்பை வந்தடைந்த மூன்று கனவுகளும், கடினமானச் சூழலில், கடினமானதைச் செய்வதற்கு அவரை உந்தித் தள்ளிய சவால்கள். திருமணத்திற்கு முன்னரே கருவுற்றப் பெண்ணை, தன் மனைவியாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்வது; ஏரோதின் பிடியிலிருந்து தப்பிக்க, பச்சிளம் குழந்தையோடும், தாயோடும், எகிப்துக்கு ஓடிச்செல்வது; மீண்டும் தன் சொந்த நாட்டுக்குத் திரும்புவது... என்று, யோசேப்புக்கு வந்த எல்லாக் கனவுகளும் சிக்கலைத் தீர்ப்பதற்குப் பதில், மீண்டும் சிக்கலில் தள்ளும் கனவுகளாக இருந்தன. இருந்தாலும், இம்மூன்று கனவுகளிலும் சொல்லப்பட்டவற்றை யோசேப்பு உடனே செயல்படுத்தினார் என்று நற்செய்தி சொல்கிறது. சிக்கலானச் சூழல்களிலும் தன்னை வந்தடைந்த கனவுகளை, இறைவன் விடுத்த அழைப்பு என்று ஏற்றுக்கொண்டதாலும், அக்கனவுகளில் சொல்லப்பட்டவற்றைச் செயல்படுத்தியதாலும், யோசேப்பை, கனவுகளின் காவலர் என்று நாம் கொண்டாடலாம்.

யோசேப்பு இஸ்ரயேல் பாரம்பரியத்தில் ஊன்றி வளர்ந்த, நேர்மையான பக்திமான். பாரம்பரியத்தை மீறுவதென்பதை அவர் கனவிலும் கருதியிருக்கமாட்டார். இறைவனின் தூதர், அவரது கனவில் சொன்ன செய்தி, பாரம்பரியத்திற்கு முரணானதாகத் தெரிந்தது யோசேப்புக்கு. திருமணத்திற்கு முன் ஒரு பெண் கருவுற்றால், அவர் இறைவனின் கட்டளைகளை மீறியவர்; இஸ்ரயேல் இனத்திற்குக் களங்கம் விளைவித்தவர் என்று மோசே தந்த சட்டமும், பாரம்பரியமும் சொல்கின்றன. இதற்கு நேர்மாறாக, கனவில் யோசேப்புக்குக் கிடைத்த செய்தி இருந்தது. கன்னியான ஒரு பெண் கருத்தரித்திருப்பது கடவுளின் செயல்; அதுவும் அவர் கருவில் தாங்கியிருப்பது கடவுளையே என்பது, யோசேப்புக்கு, பெரும் அதிர்ச்சியைத் தந்திருக்கும்.

பாரம்பரியம், சட்டம் ஆகியவற்றில் யோசேப்புக்கு ஆழ்ந்த, வெறித்தனமான பற்றும், பக்தியும் இருந்திருந்தால், மரியாவின் நிலையை அறிந்ததும், ஊரைக்கூட்டி, பாரம்பரியத்தை நிலைநாட்டியிருப்பார். மரியாவின் மீது அவரே முதல் கல்லை எறிந்திருப்பார். ஆனால், யோசேப்பு, பாரம்பரியத்தை, சரியான முறையில் புரிந்தவராய் இருந்ததால், பாரம்பரியத்தைக் கடக்கக் கூடியவர் கடவுள் என்பதை உணர்ந்திருந்தார். கடவுளிடம் அடையாளம் கேட்கத் தயங்கும் ஆகாசுக்கு, இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா வழியாக, இறைவன் தந்த அடையாளமும் இதுதானே என்பதை, யோசேப்பின் மனம் எண்ணிப் பார்த்திருக்கும். தன்னிடம் அடையாளம் கேட்கும்படி இறைவன் அழைத்தபோது, அந்த அழைப்பை ஏற்கத் தயங்கிய ஆகாசை நாம் இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் சந்திக்கிறோம் (இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா 7:10-14). தனக்கு வழங்கப்பட்ட அடையாளத்தை ஏற்க மறுத்த ஆகாசுக்கு நேர்மாறாக, தன் கனவில் கூறப்பட்டவைகளை மனதார நம்பி, செயல்பட்டார் யோசேப்பு. கடவுளை, நம்மோடு, ‘எம்மானுவேலா’கத் தங்க வைத்தார்.

சாத்திரம், சம்பிரதாயம் சட்டம், பாரம்பரியம் இவை அனைத்துமே மனித குலத்தைக் காப்பாற்ற தேவையானவைதான். ஆனால், அவற்றையெல்லாம் கடந்து நிற்பவர் கடவுள். பாரம்பரியங்களைக் கடந்த, அல்லது அவற்றிலிருந்து முரண்பட்ட ஒரு வழியில் கடவுள் வந்து நம்மோடு தங்குவதாக இருந்தால், அவரை வரவேற்க நாம் தயாராக இருக்கிறோமா? பாரம்பரியங்களைக் கடந்து, அல்லது பாரம்பரியங்களை உடைத்து வரும் கடவுளைச் சந்திக்க நாமும் பாரம்பரியங்களைக் கடந்து, அல்லது உடைத்துச் செல்ல வேண்டியிருக்கும் புனித யோசேப்பைப் போல.

கறுப்பு, வெள்ளை இனத்தவரிடையே நல்லுறவு வளரும் என்பதை, "எனக்கொரு கனவு உண்டு" (I have a dream) என்ற உலகப்புகழ்பெற்ற உரையாக வழங்கிய மார்ட்டின் லூத்தர் கிங் ஜூனியர் அவர்களையும், அதே கனவு, தென்னாப்ரிக்காவில் நனவாகும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையுடன் வாழ்ந்து, அந்தக் கனவைப் பெருமளவு நனவாக்கிய நெல்சன் மண்டேலா அவர்களையும், ஆங்கிலேயர் ஆதிக்கத்திலிருந்து மட்டுமல்ல, சாதியப் பிரிவுகள், பெண்ணடிமைத்தனம் ஆகிய தளைகளிலிருந்தும் இந்தியா விடுதலை பெறவேண்டுமென்று கனவுகள் கண்டு, தன் கனவுகளை, கவிதைகளாக விட்டுச்சென்ற மகாகவி பாரதியார் அவர்களையும், “நீங்கள் உறங்கும்போது காண்பது கனவு அல்ல, மாறாக, உங்களை உறங்கவிடாமல் செய்யும் நல்லெண்ணங்களே கனவு” (“Dream is not that which you see while sleeping it is something that does not let you sleep.”) என்று கூறிய அப்துல் கலாம் அவர்களையும், வரலாறு மறந்திருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லை. கனவு காணவும், அக்கனவை நனவாக்கவும் துணிபவர்கள் வாழ்வதால்தான், இவ்வுலகம் இன்றும் வாழ்ந்து வருகிறது.

கனவுகளின் காவலரான புனித யோசேப்பு, தன் கனவுகளை நம்பி, செயல்பட்டதால் தன்னையும், மரியாவையும், குழந்தையையும் மட்டும் காப்பாற்றவில்லை. இவ்வுலகைக் காக்கவந்த இறைவனை 'இம்மானுவேல்' ஆக நம்முடன் தங்கவைத்தார். கனவுகள் காண்போம். இன்னல்கள் நடுவிலும் நம் கனவுகளை நல்ல முறையில் புரிந்து கொள்வோம். கனவுகளைச் செயல்படுத்தி, கடவுளை நம்மோடு தங்க வைப்போம். கனவுகளின் காவலரான புனித யோசேப்பு நமக்குத் துணை புரிவாராக!
