Serving two
masters
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
On September 14, we
celebrated the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, followed by the Feast of the
Mother of Sorrows on September 15. The figure of Mother Mary, seated at the
foot of the cross, carrying the lacerated body of Christ on her lap, is etched
deep in every Christian’s mind. This image, painfully, brings to mind,
thousands of mothers who mourn the loss of their children in Ukraine, Myanmar,
Syria and many other countries where war has become a daily routine.
In every war, we
sacrifice young men and women due to the insane decisions made by some selfish
monsters called ‘political leaders’. Erich Hartmann, a German fighter pilot
during World War II, after the war said: “War is a place where the young
kill one another without knowing or hating each other, because of the decision
of old people who know and hate each other, without killing each other.”
Thus, in the history of the world, the story of Calvary and the ‘Mother of
Sorrows’ standing under the cross continues…
September 15, was also
the International Day of Democracy. September 21 is the International Day of
Peace. Each year on 21 September the World Council of Churches calls churches
and parishes to observe the International Day of Prayer for Peace. 21 September
is also the United Nations-sponsored International Day of Peace. The
International Day of Democracy and the International Day of Peace, coming one
after the other, help us to think of Democracy and Peace, a rare commodity in
our war-torn world.
Democracy and Peace are probably getting removed
from the vocabulary of the next generation. For them, these terms could have
only some historical significance. Or, they would be taught another warped
definition of Peace and Democracy. One of the most popular definitions of
Democracy that our generation can still remember is the famous definition given
by Abraham Lincoln: “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people,
for the people.” The moment I thought of this quote, my mind instinctively
thought of another popular quote of Lincoln Lincoln
As I was reflecting on
the combination – deception and democracy – my mind also thought of the word
‘scam’ and I was literally flooded with information from the web about scams in
human history. One of them was titled “THE BIGGEST SCAM IN HISTORY”. This
article was about the Federal Reserve Bank, a private company of bankers in the
U.S.
On June 4, 1963,
President Kennedy signed a Presidential decree, Executive Order 11110. This order virtually stripped the Federal
Reserve Bank of its power to loan money to the United States Government at
interest. President Kennedy declared the
privately owned Federal Reserve Bank would soon be out of business. In less than five months after signing that
executive order, President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963.
Lincoln also took
on the bankers and that brave bold step may also have cost him his life.
During the Civil
War (from 1861-1865), President Lincoln needed money to finance the War for the
North. The Bankers were going to charge him 24% to 36% interest. Lincoln was
horrified and greatly distressed, and he would not think of plunging his
beloved country into a debt that the country would find impossible to pay back.
So, Lincoln advised
Congress to pass a law authorizing the printing of full legal tender Treasury
notes to pay for the War effort… The Treasury notes were printed with green ink
on the back, so the people called them "Greenbacks". Lincoln had printed
400 million dollars worth of Greenbacks (the exact amount being $449,338,902),
money that he delegated to be created, a debt-free and interest-free money to
finance the War…Lincoln was assassinated shortly after the war and Congress
revoked the Greenback Law and enacted, in its place, the National Banking Act…
When you follow the
money, you find there was no one in the world who had a better reason to kill
these two Presidents than the bankers.
We usually think that
the American President is a very powerful person. But, when we read about these
two Presidents, our ideas change. There seem to be other super powers
controlling the American President – mainly, money power! When money becomes
powerful enough to replace God, what becomes of a President? It is interesting
that on every dollar bill of the U.S. U.S.
Why are we speaking
about money in our Sunday reflection? We are invited to reflect on choosing
between God and mammon (money) in today’s Gospel. Jesus closes today’s Gospel
with a clear, powerful statement: “You cannot serve God and mammon.” (Luke
16:13)
Any person with some
practical sense would hesitate to take these words of Jesus seriously. How does
one live without money? – would be the most common-sense question. Is Jesus
saying that we need to give up money in order to obtain God? I don’t think so.
In the above statement of Jesus, the key word is – Serve. You cannot serve
God and mammon. If we look at the whole verse, this becomes clear: No
servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the
other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve
God and mammon. (Luke 16:13)
Once a person begins a
debate between whom to serve… God or mammon (money), the unseen God gets
side-lined while the much-seen money is enthroned on the altar. Unfortunately,
such an enthronement relegates not only God, but all human values.
Getting back to our
topic of how the U.S.
In his interview he
spoke about ‘Corporatocracy’ – the reign of corporate people! He claims that
whether the U.S. U.S.
got into the Latin America, Asia and the Gulf
countries to extend the empire of the corporate giants.
As a member of the
group of ‘economic hit men’ sent to the Latin American countries, he seems to
be speaking from his personal experience. It is frightening to listen to him.
Even if half of what he says is true, it is still disturbing and frightening.
Countries like India which suffered heavily under the British colonisation, now
suffer from neo-colonisation of the multi-national giants, that is, from ‘Corporatocracy’.
During the past few years, we are painfully aware of how the Indian government
is controlled by a few very rich individuals. While these few rich people have
become richer even during the COVID pandemic, poor people have been massacred
by many anti-people laws enacted during the pandemic by the government.
Right from the
beginning of human history, selfish, greedy people have been worshipping money.
This worship of money resulted in various other evils in which poor people have
been sacrificed on the altar of money. We hear Prophet Amos lashing out against
these greedy, cunning and selfish people in the first reading today:
Amos 8:4-7
Hear this, you
who trample the needy and do away with the poor of the land, saying, “When will
the New Moon be over that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath be ended that we
may market wheat?” skimping on the measure, boosting the price and cheating
with dishonest scales, buying the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of
sandals, selling even the sweepings with the wheat. The Lord has sworn by
himself, the Pride of Jacob: “I will never forget anything they have done.
Let us put God back on
the altar, removing mammon from the prime place in our personal lives, so that
we can hope to remove mammon from the high place it holds in our world! By
giving God the rightful place, we can give the rightful place for human beings
too, thus establishing true Democracy and Peace!
God and
Money

14, திருச்சிலுவைத் திருநாளையும், செப்டம்பர் 15, துயருறும் அன்னை மரியாவின்
திருநாளையும் சிறப்பித்தோம். அதே செப்டம்பர் 15ம் தேதி, அனைத்துலக மக்களாட்சி
நாளும் சிறப்பிக்கப்பட்டது. செப்டம்பர் 21, வருகிற பதனன்று, அமைதிக்கென செபிக்கும்
உலக நாள் சிறப்பிக்கப்படுகிறது.
அடுத்தடுத்து
வரும் இந்நாள்கள், சிலுவை, துயருறும் அன்னை மரியா, மக்களாட்சி, அமைதி ஆகிய கருத்துக்களைத்
தொடர்புபடுத்திப் பார்க்க ஒரு வாய்ப்பை அளிக்கிறது. சிலுவையில் அறையுண்டு, உருக்குலைந்திருந்த இயேசுவை
மடியில் சுமந்து அமர்ந்திருந்த அன்னை மரியாவைப் போல, உருக்குலைந்து கிடக்கும்
மக்களாட்சி, அமைதி
என்ற மகனையும், மகளையும்
மடியேந்தி அழுதுகொண்டிருக்கும் பல தாய்நாடுகளை எண்ணி வேதனைப்பட வேண்டிய நாள்களாக, அமைதி
நாளும்,
அனைத்துலக
மக்களாட்சி நாளும் மாறிவிட்டன.
‘மக்களாட்சி’ என்ற சொல்லுக்கு, மக்களுக்காக, மக்களால், மக்களைக் கொண்டு அமைக்கப்படுவதே
மக்களாட்சி
என்று முன்னாள் அமெரிக்க அரசுத் தலைவர் ஆபிரகாம் லிங்கன் அவர்கள் அளித்துள்ள இலக்கணம்
அனைவரும் அறிந்த ஒன்று. அந்த இலக்கணத்தை எண்ணிப்பார்க்கும் இவ்வேளையில், லிங்கன் அவர்கள் சொன்ன
வேறொரு கூற்றையும், மக்களாட்சியோடு இணைத்துப் பார்க்கத் தோன்றுகிறது. நம் கவனத்தை
ஈர்க்கும் அவரது கூற்று இதுதான்: எல்லா மனிதரையும் ஒரு சில நேரங்களில் நீ ஏமாற்றலாம்.
எல்லா நேரங்களிலும் ஒரு சில மனிதரை ஏமாற்றலாம். ஆனால், எல்லா மனிதரையும், எல்லா நேரங்களிலும் உன்னால்
ஏமாற்ற முடியாது.
ஏமாற்றுவதுபற்றி
லிங்கன் அவர்கள் இவ்வாறு சொன்னதற்குக் காரணம் இருந்தது. அமெரிக்காவில் வங்கிகள் தனியார்
வசம் இருந்தன. 1861ம் ஆண்டு நிகழ்ந்த உள்நாட்டுப் போரின்போது, அரசுத்தலைவராக பணியாற்றிவந்த லிங்கன் அவர்கள், வங்கி உரிமையாளர்களிடம்
போர்ச் செலவுக்குப் பணம் கேட்டார். வங்கி உரிமையாளர்கள் 24 முதல் 36 விழுக்காடு வட்டிக்குப்
பணம் தருவதாகச் சொன்னார்கள். இதை ஒரு பகல் கொள்ளை என்றுணர்ந்த லிங்கன் அவர்கள், பாராளுமன்றத்தின் அனுமதியுடன்
அரசே பண நோட்டுக்களை அச்சிட்டு வெளியிடும் வண்ணம் சட்டத்திருத்தம் ஒன்றைக் கொண்டுவந்தார்.
இப்படி அச்சிடப்பட்ட 40 கோடி டாலர் பணத்தைக் கொண்டு அவர் உள்நாட்டுப் போரின் செலவுகளைச்
சமாளித்தார். உள்நாட்டுப் போர் முடிந்ததும், லிங்கன் அவர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டார்.
அவர் கொண்டு வந்த சட்டமும் மாற்றப்பட்டது.
நூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்குப்பின், ஜான் கென்னடி அவர்கள்
அரசுத் தலைவராக இருந்தபோது, 1963ம் ஆண்டு, ஜூன் 4ம் தேதி, வங்கிகளுக்குச்
சாதகமில்லாத ஓர் அரசாணையை வெளியிட்டார். அதே ஆண்டு, நவம்பர் 22ம் தேதி அவர் சுட்டுக்
கொல்லப்பட்டார். லிங்கன், கென்னடி ஆகிய இருவரின் கொலைகளுக்கும் தெளிவானக்
காரணங்கள் இதுவரைத் தெரியவில்லை. இவர்களது கொலைகளுக்கும், பணம் படைத்த வங்கி உரிமையாளர்களுக்கும்
தொடர்பு இருக்கலாம் என்பது, வரலாற்றில், அவ்வப்போது, அதிக சப்தமில்லாமல் பேசப்படும்
கருத்துக்கள்.
இவ்விரு
எடுத்துக்காட்டுகளும், ஒரு மாபெரும் பனிப் பாறையின் மேல் நுனிதான் (Tip of the
iceberg).
பணம்
அல்லது செல்வம் என்ற அந்தப் பனிப்பாறையில், தெரிந்தும், தெரியாமலும் மோதி, பல நாடுகள், கடன் என்ற
கடலில் மூழ்கி வருவது, இன்றைய அவலநிலை. உலகின் பல நாடுகளிலும், பெயரளவில் நடக்கும்
மக்களாட்சியையும், அந்த
ஆட்சியை ஆட்டிப்படைக்கும் பண சக்தியையும் குறித்து இந்த ஞாயிறன்று நாம் சிந்திக்க அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம்.
இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் இறுதியில் இயேசு கூறும் திட்டவட்டமான சொற்கள், நம்மை விழித்தெழச்
செய்கின்றன: "நீங்கள் கடவுளுக்கும், செல்வத்துக்கும் பணிவிடை
செய்யமுடியாது" (லூக்கா 16:13)
இயேசுவின்
இந்தக் கூற்று, நடைமுறை வாழ்வுக்கு ஒத்துவராததுபோல் தெரிகிறது. கடவுளையும் செல்வத்தையும்
எதிரும் புதிருமாக வைத்து, இயேசு சொன்ன இந்த
வார்த்தைகளைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள, லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 16ம் பிரிவில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள
13ம் இறைச் சொற்றொடர் முழுவதையும் சிந்திப்பது உதவியாக இருக்கும்.

வீட்டு வேலையாளும் இரு தலைவர்களுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்யமுடியாது; ஏனெனில், ஒருவரை வெறுத்து மற்றவரிடம்
அவர் அன்பு கொள்வார்; அல்லது ஒருவரைச் சார்ந்து கொண்டு மற்றவரைப்
புறக்கணிப்பார். நீங்கள் கடவுளுக்கும் செல்வத்துக்கும் பணிவிடை செய்யமுடியாது." என்று இயேசு கூறியுள்ளார்.
பணமின்றி, செல்வமின்றி வாழ்க்கை
நடத்துங்கள் என்றோ, செல்வத்தைத் துறந்துவிட்டு கடவுளுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்யுங்கள் என்றோ,
இயேசு கூறவில்லை. கடவுளுக்கும் செல்வத்துக்கும் சமமான இடத்தைக் கொடுத்து,
இரண்டுக்கும் பணிவிடை செய்வதில்தான் பிரச்சனை ஆரம்பமாகிறது. ஒருவருடைய வாழ்வில், எப்போது,
அவர் சேர்த்த செல்வம், இறைவனுக்குப்
போட்டியாக எழுகிறதோ, அப்போது
போராட்டம் துவங்குகிறது. இறைவனா, செல்வமா என்ற இந்தப் போட்டியில், கண்ணால் காண முடியாத இறைவனைவிட, கண்ணால் காணக்கூடியச்
செல்வத்தை நாம் எளிதில் பீடமேற்றிவிடுகிறோம்.
இன்றைய
உலகில் செல்வம் எந்தெந்த வழிகளில் பீடமேற்றப்பட்டு, வணங்கப்படுகிறது என்பதை எண்ணும்போது
அதிர்ச்சியாக உள்ளது. செல்வர்கள் ஒருசிலர், இவ்வுலகை எவ்விதம் ஆட்டிப்படைக்கின்றனர்
என்பதை John
Perkins
என்பவர்
ஒரு நூலில் எழுதியுள்ளார். 2004ம் ஆண்டு வெளியான இந்நூலின் தலைப்பு நம் கவனத்தை முதலில்
ஈர்க்கிறது: “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” - அதாவது, “பொருளாதார அடியாள்
ஒருவரின் பாவ அறிக்கை” என்பது இந்நூலின் தலைப்பு.

அமெரிக்காவை எந்தக் கட்சி ஆண்டாலும் சரி, ஆட்சியில் இருப்போரை ஆட்டிப்
படைப்பதெல்லாம் செல்வம் படைத்த ஒரு சிலரே. இச்செல்வர்கள் தங்கள் நாட்டில்
வளர்த்துள்ள வர்த்தகம் போதாதென்று, அடுத்த நாடுகளுக்குச் செல்ல முடிவெடுத்தால்,
அதற்கு அமெரிக்க அரசும் துணைபோக வேண்டும். உலகிலேயே மிக
சக்திவாய்ந்ததெனக் கருதப்படும் அமெரிக்க அரசே, செல்வர்களின் கைப்பொம்மைகள் என்றால், ஏனைய நாடுகளைப்பற்றி சொல்லவும்
வேண்டுமா?
செல்வர்கள்
அடுத்த நாட்டுக்குள் காலடிவைக்க எடுக்கும் முயற்சிகளை John Perkins அவர்கள் தன் பேட்டியொன்றில்
படிப்படியாக விவரித்துள்ளார். பணத்தைக் காட்டி அடுத்த நாட்டுத் தலைவர்களை விலைபேசும்
முயற்சிகள் முதலில் நடைபெறும். இந்த முயற்சி தோற்றுப்போனால், மக்களின் போராட்டம் என்ற
பெயரில் அந்நாட்டில் குழப்பங்களை உருவாக்கி, அங்கு அமெரிக்க அரசின்
இராணுவத் தலையீடு இருக்கும்படி செய்வது அடுத்தக் கட்டம் என்று Perkins கூறியுள்ளார்.
அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டு பொருளாதாரம், இராணுவத் தளவாடங்களின் உற்பத்தியை பெருமளவு
நம்பியிருப்பதால், உலகில் மோதல்களும், போர்களும் நடப்பது, அந்நாட்டின்
பொருளாதாரத்திற்கு, செல்வந்தர்களின் இலாபத்திற்கு பெரும் உதவியாக இருக்கும். இவ்விதம்
செல்வம் மிகுந்த நாடுகளில் வாழும் செல்வர்கள், தங்கள் பணபலத்தைக் கொண்டு, இலத்தீன் அமெரிக்க,
ஆப்ரிக்க,
ஆசிய
நாடுகளில் புகுந்து, அங்குள்ள அரசுகளை ஆட்டிப்படைப்பதை நாம் உணர்ந்து வருகிறோம்.
வெளிநாட்டிலிருந்து
வந்துதான் ஒரு நாட்டின் மக்களாட்சியையோ அல்லது அந்நாட்டின் இயற்கை வளங்களையோ அழிக்கவேண்டும்
என்பது கட்டாயமில்லை. நாட்டுக்குள் வாழும் செல்வர்களே இந்த அழிவை உருவாக்கி வருவதை
ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டிலும் நாம் காணலாம். யார் ஆட்சியில் இருந்தாலும், செல்வர்கள் மட்டுமே ஆட்சி
நடத்துகின்றனர் என்பதற்கு, அனைத்து நாடுகளும் எடுத்துக்காட்டுகள். இவ்விதம் செல்வர்கள்
சக்தி பெறுவதற்கு, அவர்கள் உருவாக்கி, பீடமேற்றி, தொழுதுவரும் செல்வமே முக்கியக் காரணம்.
நாடுகளை ஆட்டிப்படைக்கும் செல்வர்களை, நாளெல்லாம் ஆட்டிப்படைப்பது அவர்கள் குவித்து
வைத்திருக்கும் செல்வம்.
பேராசையில்
வாழும் செல்வர்கள், அனைத்தையும், அனைவரையும் தாங்கள் வழிபடும் செல்வத்திற்குப்
பலியாக்குவது தொன்றுதொட்டு மனித வரலாற்றில் நிகழ்ந்துவரும் ஓர் அவலம்தான்.
இறைவாக்கினர் ஆமோஸ் காலத்தில் வாழ்ந்த செல்வர்களும் இறைவனைவிட செல்வத்திற்கு மதிப்பு
அளித்ததால், அவர்களுக்கு
ஒய்வு நாளும் ஒரு பெரும் சுமையாக மாறியது. இதோ இறைவாக்கினர் ஆமோஸ் இச்செல்வர்களைப்
பார்த்து விடுக்கும் எச்சரிக்கை:

வறியோரை
நசுக்கி, நாட்டில் உள்ள ஒடுக்கப்பட்டோரை அழிக்கின்றவர்களே, இதைக் கேளுங்கள்: நாம் தானியங்களை விற்பதற்கு
அமாவாசை எப்பொழுது முடியும்? கோதுமையை நல்ல விலைக்கு
விற்பதற்கு ஓய்வுநாள் எப்பொழுது முடிவுறும்? மரக்காலைச் சிறியதாக்கி, எடைக்கல்லைக் கனமாக்கி, கள்ளத் தராசினால் மோசடி
செய்யலாம்: வெள்ளிக்காசுக்கு ஏழைகளையும் இரு காலணிக்கு வறியோரையும் வாங்கலாம்:
கோதுமைப் பதர்களையும் விற்கலாம் என்று நீங்கள் திட்டமிடுகிறீர்கள் அல்லவா? ஆண்டவர் யாக்கோபின் பெருமைமீது
ஆணையிட்டுக் கூறுகின்றார்: அவர்களுடைய இந்தச் செயல்களுள் ஒன்றையேனும் நான் ஒருபோதும்
மறக்கமாட்டேன்.
உலகின்
அனைத்து நாடுகளிலும் வாழும் ஒரு சில செல்வர்களின் சக்தியால், அவர்கள் வழிபடும்
செல்வத்தின் சக்தியால்,
இன்று உலக அரசுகளும், அகில
உலக அமைப்புக்களும் சக்தி இழந்து வருகின்றன.
கடந்த
இரு ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக கோவிட்-19 பெருந்தொற்று, இவ்வுலகின் சுவாசத்தை
தன் அரக்கப்பிடியில் வதைத்த வேளையில், உலகின் பொருளாதாரத்தை பெருமளவு சிதைத்த வேளையில், செல்வந்தர்களின் வாழ்விலும், பொருளாதாரத்திலும் எந்த
வீழ்ச்சியும் இல்லை. இன்னும் பார்க்கப்போனால், இந்த பெருந்தொற்றின் நெருக்கடிகள்
செல்வந்தர்களுக்கு கூடுதல் வருமானத்தைத் தந்தன என்பது வேதனையைத் தருகிறது.
இவ்வுலகில்,
மக்களாட்சியும், அமைதியும் வளரவேண்டுமெனில், பீடமேற்றி வணங்கப்படும் செல்வம் பீடத்தை
விட்டு நீக்கப்படவேண்டும். நாம் உருவாக்கிய செல்வங்கள் நம்மை ஆட்டிப்படைக்கும் கடவுளாக
மாறியுள்ள அந்த மயக்கத்திலிருந்து இவ்வுலகம் மீளவேண்டும். இத்தகைய வேண்டுதல்களை இறைவனிடம்
இன்று நம்பிக்கையோடு ஏந்திச் செல்வோம்.
