We come to this Sunday liturgy with a heavy heart due to the sad events that have claimed hundreds of human lives on the final days of October (29 and 30).

On October 29, Saturday night, at least 154 people died as huge Halloween crowds surged into a narrow street in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Another 82 were injured in the incident in the Itaewon nightlife area which was holding its first unmasked Halloween celebrations since Covid. Almost all of the dead and the ijured were young boys and girls, under twenty years of age. On the same day, twin car bomb explosions near a busy junction in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, killed at least 100 people.

On October 30, Sunday, the Mobri suspension bridge in Gujarat, India, collapsed due to over crowding of people and the unruly behaviour of some young men. 141 people - most of them women, children and the elderly - died.

Apart from these tragic events, we are continuously reminded of the senseless massacre unleashed by Vladimir Putin, the Russian President in Ukraine. Due to the madness of this one man, tens of thousands died in the past eight months on both sides – Russia and Ukraine, most of whom are young men and women serving in the army.

We begin our Sunday reflection with a silent prayer for all those – especially the youth – who have died in these tragedies. These events also give us an opportunity to examen ourselves and see whether human life has become so cheap as to be sacrificed for personal, perverted reasons.

This is the first Sunday in the month of November. The month of November gives us an opportunity to think of the dear departed. This is also the time when the Liturgical year is coming to a close. At this juncture, the Church invites us to reflect on the end of our eartly life as well as life after death.

There are quite many stories addressing the question of how to understand death and after life. Here is one of them:

As the doctor was preparing to leave the room, the sick man, fighting for his life, turned to him and said, "Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side." Very quietly, the doctor said, "I don't know." "You don't know? You, a Christian, do not know what is on the other side?" asked the patient in a desparate voice.

The doctor was holding the handle of the closed door. From the other side of the door came the sound of scratching and whining, and as the doctor opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of happiness.

Turning to the patient, the doctor said, "Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except the fact that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing... I know my Master is there and that is enough." (Author Unknown)

Throughout the month of November, we pay occasional / frequent visits to the graveyard, and offer Masses for the dear departed. The First Reading and the Gospel assigned for today’s liturgy give us an opportunity to think of life, death, and afterlife. The first reading - 2 Maccabees 7:1-2,9-14 - paints a glorious picture of a mother and her seven sons who brave torture and death for a noble cause. They look at death only as a passage. We hear two of the sons, at the point of death, making faith-filled statements about resurrection:

And when he was at his last breath, he said, “You … dismiss us from this present life, but the King of the universe will raise us up to an everlasting renewal of life, because we have died for his laws.”

And when he was near death, he said, “One cannot but choose to die at the hands of men and to cherish the hope that God gives of being raised again by him.” (2 Maccabees 7:9,14)

The Gospel - Luke 20: 27-38 - on the other hand, presents a group of people – the Sadducees who consider death as only annihilation… nothing to look forward to after that. For the Sadducees, life on earth was real. Anything beyond the grave was… well, imaginary fiction. They pose a question, a riddle, to Jesus about seven brothers marrying the same woman. Although they prefaced their question as a serious search as to how to interpret Moses, Jesus could see their cynicism and ridicule about resurrection and afterlife. Jesus’ reply is a lovely treatise on God of the living and the angel-like life after our earthly pilgrimage.

Birth and death are two points in every human life. Between these two points, we are invited to design our life. All of us know when we were born, but most of us are not privileged to know when and how we shall die. Some are. Some, especially those diagnosed with terminal illness like cancer, are given ‘advanced notice’ of their impending death.

Most of the cancer patients when they hear this ‘notice’, are heart broken and dejected. But, there are a few who have defied all medical predictions. One of them is Greg Anderson. In 1984, Greg was given hardly 30 days of life, when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Now, it is 38 years and Greg is going around the world trying to tell people how they can live with cancer and conquer cancer. He is the founder of the Cancer Recovery Foundation International. He has written many books on the theme of living with or conquering cancer. One of them with the title: “The 22 Non-negotiable Laws of Wellness” was published in 1995. Although these laws were primarily meant for people living with cancer, it gives tips to all of us as to how we can all lead a meaningful life.

Here are a few of these 22 Laws of Wellness:

The Law of Esprit - living life with joy: The single overriding objective in wellness is creating constant personal renewal where we recognize and act on the truth that each day is a miraculous gift and our job is to untie the ribbons.

The Law of Developmental Motivation: The essence of the law is this: I am complete but not finished. One of the cancer patients, after attending the course by Greg Anderson, wrote in her course evaluation, “The most important thing I learned was to stop dying of cancer and start living with cancer. I’ve resolved to master death by living life.”

Thus, Greg Anderson spells out 22 laws of positive re-enforcement. The last three Laws of this series are: 20. The Law of Gratitude 21. The Law of Personal Peace and 22. The Law of Unconditional Love

In this book he discusses the strained relationship he had with his Dad and how this was eating him up along with his sickness. Once he was willing to forgive his Dad and begin loving him unconditionally, there was a remarkable improvement in his health. Here are the closing lines of the book: The Law of Unconditional Loving is wellness in the most inclusive sense. All the other laws connect through this greatest of laws...Loving without condition precludes us from ever blaming again. Blaming serves no purpose… Above all, the Law of Unconditional Loving demands that we practice loving. We must do so daily, hourly, minute by minute. In walking that path, we find the great joy of the ultimate call and reap the greatest rewards of wellness.

Like Greg Anderson, Randy Pausch, a computer science professor was diagnosed with terminal cancer. On September 18, 2007, soon after Randy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he stepped in front of an audience of 400 people at Carnegie Mellon University (in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA) to deliver “The Last Lecture” titled “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” A lot of professors give talks titled “The Last Lecture.” Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can’t help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?

When Randy Pausch was asked to give such a lecture, he didn’t have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. With slides of his CT scans displayed on screen, Randy told his audience about the cancer that was devouring his pancreas and that would claim his life in a matter of months. The lecture he gave - “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” - wasn’t about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment. It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

Randy’s lecture has become a phenomenon, as has the book “The Last Lecture” he wrote based on the same principles, celebrating the dreams we all strive to make realities. Sadly, Randy lost his battle to pancreatic cancer on July 25th, 2008, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all, for generations to come. Here are some memorable quotes from the book – “The Last Lecture”:

·    “People are more important than things.”

·    “Find the best in everybody. Just keep waiting no matter how long it takes. No one is all evil. Everybody has a good side, just keep waiting, it will come out.”

·    “Too many people go through life complaining about their problems. I've always believed that if you took one tenth the enrgy you put into complaining and applied it to solving the problem, you'd be surprised by how well things can work out.”

·    “Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted. And experience is often the most valuable thing you have to offer.”

·    “It's not about how to achieve your dreams, it's about how to lead your life, ... If you lead your life the right way, … the dreams will come to you.”

·    “Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things humans can do for each other.”

Christ has promised in today’s Gospel that in afterlife we shall all be like angels. Why wait till then? We can meet angels already in this life – angels like Greg Anderson and Randy Pausch and, if we get our priorities right, we can become angels ourselves!

கனத்த இதயத்தோடு நாம் இந்த ஞாயிறு வழிபாட்டிற்கு வந்துள்ளோம். சென்ற வாரம், அக்டோபர் 29, 30 ஆகிய இரு நாள்கள் நடைபெற்ற மூன்று நிகழ்வுகள் நம் இதயங்களில் வேதனைச் சுமையை ஏற்றியுள்ளன.

அக்டோபர் 29, சனிக்கிழமை இரவு, தென் கொரிய நாட்டின் தலைநகரான சோல் (Seoul) நகரில், Halloween என்ற விழாவைக் கொண்டாட ஆயிரக்கணக்காகக் கூடிவந்த இளையோரிடையே ஏற்பட்ட நெரிசலில், 154 பேர் இறந்தனர், 82 பேர் காயமுற்றனர். இவர்கள் அனைவருமே, 20 வயதுக்குட்பட்ட இளையோர். இதே சனிக்கிழமை, சோமாலியா நாட்டின் தலைநகர் மொகதீஷுவில் நிகழ்ந்த கார் வெடிகுண்டு தாக்குதல் 100க்கும் அதிகமானோரை பலிவாங்கியது.

அக்டோபர் 30, ஞாயிறன்று, இந்தியாவின் குஜராத் மாநிலத்தில், மோப்ரி (Mobri) எனுமிடத்தில் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள தொங்கு பாலம், மக்கள் கூட்டத்தாலும், இளையோர் ஒரு சிலர் பாலத்தைத் தாங்கியிருந்த அமைப்புக்களை விளையாட்டுக்காக ஆட்ட முயன்றதாலும், பாலம் அறுந்து விழுந்தது. இந்த விபத்தில், 141 பேர் கொல்லப்பட்டனர். இவர்களில் பலர், குழந்தைகள் மற்றும் பெண்கள்.

மக்களைப் பலிகொண்ட இந்த துயர நிகழ்வுகளை எண்ணிப்பார்க்கும் இவ்வேளையில், கடந்த 8 மாதங்களுக்கும் மேலாக உக்ரைன் நாட்டின் மீது இரஷ்யா மேற்கொண்டு வரும் ஆயுத தாக்குதல்களையும் எண்ணிப் பார்க்கிறோம். விளாடிமிர் புடின் என்ற ஒரு தனி மனிதனின் மதியற்ற ஆணவ, அதிகார வெறியால், இரஷ்யா, உக்ரைன் ஆகிய இரு நாடுகளிலும் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான இளம் வீரர்களும் அப்பாவி மக்களும் கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளனர்.

ஒரு சில தனிப்பட்ட மனிதர்கள், அல்லது, ஒரு சில குழுவினர் எடுக்கும் தவறான முடிவுகளால் பலியாகிவரும் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான மக்களின் உயிரிழப்பிற்கு நாம் சில நொடிகள் மௌன அஞ்சலி செலுத்துவோம். நமது தலைமுறையினருக்கு, குறிப்பாக இளையோருக்கு மனித உயிர் வெகு மலிவாகிவிட்டதோ என்ற கேள்வியை ஆழ சிந்திப்போம்.

நவம்பர் மாதத்தின் முதல் ஞாயிறு இது. மரணத்தையும் மறுவாழ்வையும் பற்றி அடிக்கடி சிந்திக்க, தாய் திருஅவை நமக்கு வழங்கியிருக்கும் ஒரு காலம், இந்த நவம்பர் மாதம். கல்லறைகளுக்குச் செல்லுதல், இறந்தோருக்காகத் திருப்பலிகள் நிறைவேற்றுதல் என்று, பொருள்நிறைந்த செயல்கள் பலவற்றில் நாம் ஈடுபடுகிறோம். அத்துடன், தற்போது, நாம் வழிபாட்டு ஆண்டின் இறுதியை நெருங்கியுள்ளோம்

இவ்வேளையில், வாழ்வின் இறுதி, மறுவாழ்வு ஆகிய எண்ணங்களை சிந்திக்க தாய் திருஅவை நம்மை அழைக்கிறார். வாழ்வின் முடிவான சாவையும், மறுவாழ்வையும் மையப்படுத்தி பல கதைகள் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளன. அவற்றில் ஒன்று இதோ:

மருத்துவமனையில், மரணத்தோடு போராடிக்கொண்டிருந்த ஒரு நோயாளியை, டாக்டர் ஒருவர் சந்தித்தார். அவர் அங்கிருந்து கிளம்பும் வேளையில், நோயாளி அவரிடம், "டாக்டர், சாவதற்கு எனக்குப் பயமாக உள்ளது. சாவுக்குப் பிறகு என்ன இருக்கிறது, சொல்லுங்களேன்" என்று கேட்டார். டாக்டர் அவரிடம், "எனக்குத் தெரியாது" என்று சொல்லியபடி, அந்த அறையின் கதவருகே சென்றார். நோயாளி அவரிடம், "நீங்கள் ஒரு கிறிஸ்தவர். சாவுக்குப் பிறகு என்ன உள்ளதென்று உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாதா?" என்று கேட்டார்.

கதவருகே சென்ற டாக்டர், அதன் கைப்பிடியைத் தொட்டதும், கதவுக்கு மறுபக்கம் நாய் ஒன்று, கதவின் மேல் தன் கால்களால் சுரண்டிக்கொண்டிருந்த சப்தம் கேட்டது. டாக்டர் கதவைத் திறந்ததும், அவரது நாய் பாய்ந்துவந்து, மகிழ்வுடன் அவரது கால்களைச் சுற்றிச் சுற்றி வந்தது.

டாக்டர் நோயாளியைப் பார்த்து, ஓர் அழகான கருத்தைக் கூறினார்: "என்னுடைய நாயைப் பார்த்தீர்களா? அது இந்த அறைக்குள் இதுவரை வந்ததேயில்லை. இந்த அறைக்குள் என்ன இருக்கும் என்பதும் அதற்குத் தெரியாது. அதற்குத் தெரிந்ததெல்லாம் ஒன்றுதான். இந்த அறைக்குள் அதனுடையத் தலைவனாகிய நான் இருப்பது மட்டுமே அதற்குத் தெரியும். எனவே, கதவைத் திறந்ததும், எந்தத் தயக்கமும் இல்லாமல், அது அறைக்குள் பாய்ந்து வந்தது. அதேபோல், சாவுக்கு மறுபக்கம் என்ன இருக்கிறது என்று எனக்குச் சுத்தமாகத் தெரியாது. ஆனால், சாவுக்கு மறுபக்கத்தில் என் தலைவனாம் இறைவன் இருக்கிறார் என்பது மட்டும் எனக்குத் தெரியும். அது போதும் எனக்கு" என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு, டாக்டர், தன் நாயை அழைத்துக்கொண்டு சென்றார்.

இன்று நமக்குத் வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள ஞாயிறு வாசகங்கள், மரணம், மறுவாழ்வு ஆகியவற்றைச் சிந்திக்க நல்லதொரு வாய்ப்பை வழங்குகின்றன. நம்பிக்கையும் துணிவும் நிறைந்த ஒரு தாயும், அவரது ஏழு மகன்களும் மரணத்தைச் சந்திக்கும் நிகழ்வைக்கூறும் - மக்கபேயர் 2ம் நூல் 7: 1-2, 9-14 - இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம், நமக்குச் சில பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித்தருகிறது. துன்பம், மரணம், ஆகியவை, இறைவனுக்கு முன் சக்தியற்றவை என்று கூறும் இக்குடும்பத்தினர், மோசே தந்த சட்டங்களை மீறுவதற்குப்பதில், சாவைச் சந்திக்கத் துணிகின்றனர். மரணத்தின் மறுபக்கம், தங்களை உயிர்த்தெழச் செய்யும் இறைவனை தாங்கள் சந்திக்கப் போவதாக அவர்கள் அறிக்கையிடுகின்றனர்:

"நாங்கள் இறந்தபின் என்றென்றும் வாழுமாறு அனைத்துலக அரசர் எங்களை உயிர்த்தெழச் செய்வார்... கடவுள் மீண்டும் உயிர்த்தெழச் செய்வார் என்னும் நம்பிக்கை எனக்கு இருப்பதால், மனிதர் கையால் இறக்க விரும்புகிறேன்." என்று, இவர்கள் கூறும் சொற்கள், உயிர்ப்பைப் பற்றிய உன்னத அறிக்கைகளாக ஒலிக்கின்றன.

உயிர்ப்பைப் பற்றிய மாற்றுக் கருத்துக்கள் கொண்ட சதுசேயர்களை, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் சந்திக்கின்றோம். உயிர்த்தெழுதலை மறுக்கும் சில சதுசேயர்கள்' என்று, நற்செய்தியாளர் லூக்கா, இவர்களை நமக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்துவைக்கிறார். மறு உலக வாழ்வைப்பற்றி மக்களுக்கு வலியுறுத்திக் கூறிவந்த இயேசுவை, மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் அவமானப்படுத்தும் எண்ணத்துடன், அவரிடம் ஒரு புதிரான கேள்வியை எழுப்புகின்றனர், சதுசேயர்கள். மறுஉலக வாழ்வையும், திருமணத்தையும் இணைத்து அவர்கள் கேட்ட அந்தக் கேள்வியில் ஒலித்த ஏளனத்தை இயேசு புரிந்துகொண்டார். எனவே, அவர்கள் தொடுத்த கேள்விக்கு நேரடியாகப் பதில் சொல்லாமல், மறுவாழ்வைக் குறித்தும், அந்த வாழ்வில் நாம் சந்திக்கவிருக்கும் இறைவனைக் குறித்தும் அழகான விளக்கங்களைத் தந்தார்.

"வருங்கால வாழ்வைப் பெறத் தகுதி பெற்ற யாரும் இறந்து உயிர்த்தெழும்போது திருமணம் செய்து கொள்வதில்லை. அவர்கள் வானதூதரைப்போல் இருப்பார்கள். உயிர்த்தெழுந்த மக்களாய் இருப்பதால் அவர்கள் கடவுளின் மக்களே. அவர் இறந்தோரின் கடவுள் அல்ல; மாறாக, வாழ்வோரின் கடவுள். ஏனெனில் அவரைப் பொறுத்தமட்டில் அனைவரும் உயிருள்ளவர்களே" (லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 20: 34-38) என்று இயேசு தெளிவுபடுத்தினார்.

உலகில் பிறக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு மனிதருக்கும் (எல்லா உயிரினங்களுக்கும்), பிறப்பு, இறப்பு என்ற இரு புள்ளிகள் உண்டு. இவ்விரு புள்ளிகளையும் இணைத்து நாம் வரையும் கோலம், நமது வாழ்வு. பல நேரங்களில் நாம் வரையும் கோலம் அலங்கோலமாய் மாறினாலும், அதை அழித்துத் திருத்தி, மீண்டும், மீண்டும், அழகானக் கோலம் வரைய, நமக்கு அழைப்பு வந்த வண்ணம் உள்ளது.

இவ்விரு புள்ளிகளில், பிறப்பு என்ற புள்ளி, எல்லாருக்கும் தெளிவாகத் தெரியும். இறப்பு என்ற புள்ளி, எங்கோ ஓரிடத்தில் இருக்கிறதென்பதும் எல்லாருக்கும் தெரியும். அனைவரும் இறப்போம் என்பது நிச்சயம். ஆனால், எப்போது, எங்கே, எப்படி, இறப்போம் என்பது, நமக்குத் தெரியாது. குணமாக்க இயலாத நோய் கண்ட ஒரு சிலருக்கு, அவர்களது மரணத்திற்கு நாள் குறிக்கப்படுகிறது.

புற்றுநோய் போன்ற உயிர் கொல்லி நோய், பலருக்கு, மறுஉலக வாழ்வைத் தருவதற்கு முன், இவ்வுலகிலேயே மாறியதொரு, புதியதொரு வாழ்வைத் தந்துள்ளது. இப்புதிய வாழ்வினால், ஒரு சிலர், அற்புதமான முறையில் குணம் பெற்றுள்ளனர். ஒரு சிலர், குணம் பெற முடியவில்லையெனினும், மரணத்தைச் சந்திக்கும் முன், தங்களையும், தங்களைச் சுற்றி உள்ளவர்களையும், வெகுவாக மாற்றியுள்ளனர்.

1984ம் ஆண்டு, கிரெக் ஆண்டர்சன் (Greg Anderson) என்பவருக்கு, நுரையீரலில் புற்றுநோய் இருப்பதாகக் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டது. அவர் இன்னும் முப்பது நாட்களே வாழமுடியும் என்று மருத்துவர்கள் கூறினர். அவர்கள் சொன்ன அந்த முப்பது நாட்கள் முடிந்தன. இன்று 38 ஆண்டுகள் கடந்துவிட்டன. ஆண்டர்சன் அவர்கள், இன்று, உலகெங்கும் சென்று, புற்றுநோயுடன் எப்படி வாழமுடியும், புற்றுநோயை எப்படி வெல்லமுடியும் என்பதை, உரைகளாக வழங்கி வருகிறார்.

புற்றுநோயை மையப்படுத்தி, ஆண்டர்சன் அவர்கள் எழுதிய பல நூல்களில், 1995ல் வெளியிடப்பட்ட நூலின் தலைப்பு: “நலமான வாழ்வடைய, சிறிதும் சமரசம் செய்யாமல் கடைபிடிக்க வேண்டிய 22 விதிமுறைகள்” (The 22 Non-Negotiable Laws of Wellness). புற்று நோய் உள்ளவர்களுக்கென எழுதப்பட்ட இந்த விதி முறைகள், நம் எல்லாருக்கும் தேவையான பாடங்களை வழங்குகின்றன. அவர் வழங்கிய விதிமுறைகளில் ஒரு சில இதோ:

·         வாழ்வை உற்சாகமாகச் சந்திக்கவேண்டும் என்று ஆரம்பமாகிறது, முதல் விதிமுறை. வாழ்வில் நம்மை வந்தடையும் பரிசுகள் பல. அப்பரிசுகளைச் சுற்றி கட்டப்பட்டுள்ள கயிறை அவிழ்ப்பது நம் வேலை.

·         உன்னிடம் உள்ளவற்றை வளர்ப்பது உன் கடமை என்பது மற்றொரு விதிமுறை. இதே எண்ணத்தை, அமெரிக்க எழுத்தாளரும், போதகருமான Henry Van Dyke அவர்கள், வேறு வகையில் கூறியுள்ளார்: "நல்ல குரலுடையப் பறவைகள் மட்டுமே பாடவேண்டும் என்ற நியதி இருந்தால், காடெல்லாம் மயான அமைதி பெற்றுவிடும்."

·         பிறருக்கு ஆற்றும் பணிகள் வழியே, வாழ்வின் குறிக்கோளை அடையவேண்டும் என்று ஆண்டர்சன் அவர்கள் கூறும் விதிமுறையை, புகழ்பெற்ற அறிவியலாளர் Albert Einstein அவர்கள், பின்வருமாறு கூறினார்: "சமுதாயத்தில், வெற்றி பெறும் மனிதராவதை விட, சமுதாயத்திற்குப் பயன்படும் மனிதராவதற்கு முயற்சி செய்யுங்கள்."

இவ்விதம் 21 விதிமுறைகளைக் கூறியுள்ள ஆண்டர்சன் அவர்கள், இவையனைத்திற்கும் சிகரமாக, 22வது விதிமுறையைத் தந்துள்ளார். "நிபந்தனையின்றி மன்னிக்கும் மனதை வளர்த்துக் கொள்" என்பது, அவர் தந்துள்ள விதிமுறைகளின் சிகரம்.
