Hope-filled Dreams

3rd Sunday of Advent – Gaudete Sunday

‘Chase the Lion’ is a book released in September, 2016. Mark Batterson, the author of this book, serves as lead pastor of National Community Church in Washington, D.C. He is the author of many books. The title of this book, ‘Chase the Lion’ sounds quite audacious and preposterous. Mark adds to this audacity with the sub-title: “If Your Dream Doesn’t Scare You, It’s Too Small”. We are also aware of how former President of India, Shri APJ Abdul Kalam defined dreams: “Dreams are not what you see in your sleep, dreams are those that don't let you sleep.”
The very opening lines of the first chapter of the book ‘Chase the Lion’ tells the readers that ‘chasing the lion’ is possible and has been accomplished by many, including some biblical figures. Here are the opening lines of the book: “When the image of a man-eating beast travels through the optic nerve and into the visual cortex, the brain relays an urgent message to the body: run! That’s what normal people do, but normal is overrated. Lion chasers don’t run away; lion chasers run to the roar. They don’t see a five-hundred-pound problem; they seize opportunity by the mane. They don’t take flight; they fight to the death for their dreams.”

We are speaking of this book by Mark Batterson, precisely because it talks of Dreams… It talks of an attitude all of us need to develop, namely, quit playing it safe, quit blaming and ‘run to the roar’. Mark goads us on to have ‘God-sized goals’ in life. Such daring words are part of our liturgy today, especially in the first reading from Prophet Isaiah. The Third Sunday of Advent is called ‘Gaudete Sunday’ – ‘Rejoice Sunday’. Today’s first reading from Isaiah (Chapter 35: 1-6a,10) is highly poetic and ‘too good’ to be true. Here are the opening lines of this passage: The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus*, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. (Isaiah 35: 1)
(*Crocus = flowers in yellow, white and purple shades)

As I read these lines of Prophet Isaiah, I could easily sense two streams of thoughts within me. On the one hand, I wished that ‘impossible dreams’ like these came true, especially in our present-day world which is fast becoming a vast desert. On the other hand, my ‘practical’ mind tried to brush these dreams aside as too much fantasy, too poetic! Fantasy and poetry cannot feed the stomach, says my practical mind. Is there a place for fantasy and poetry in this world? DEFINITELY! What kind of a world will ours be, where there is no poetry, painting, sculpture etc.? In short, what will the world be without art? World without heart!

Art, in my opinion, has been the heart-beat of the human race and has kept alive our dreams and hopes. Art, in its turn, has been kept alive for centuries by religion. Religious scriptures have given birth to so many masterpieces of art! The passage from Isaiah is a good sample to show that scriptures have many inspiring, artistic passages and they become inspiration to lift the human spirit, which, otherwise, would be weighed down by and entangled in ‘practical’ thinking.

Quite many poets were much ahead of their times and, in that sense, they were prophets. For many of them, although, their personal life was miserable, their poetry lifted people out of their misery. One such poet was the revolutionary Tamil poet Subramaniya Bharathi whose birthday we celebrate today, 11 December. His thirst for a free India consumed him while he was only 38 (December 11, 1882 - September 11, 1921). Although he was chained by the oppressive structures and his own poverty, he was eloquent in speaking of real, true freedom. His idea of freedom went far beyond political freedom, to gender justice and other forms of freedom, equality and national integration (சிந்து நதியின் மிசை நிலவினிலே)… much ahead of his times.

In today’s Gospel we are presented with a hero who was a prophet par excellence from whom millions of other prophets like Bharathi would have drawn inspiration. We are invited to meet John the Baptist who was an unbridled spirit, a firebrand, a voice in the wilderness! He is introduced to us with best compliments by Jesus in today’s Gospel (Matthew 11:2-11): “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist…”. John was a lonesome voice in the desert; but, he made himself heard by the people. While he welcomed the common people and gave them hope, he was severe on religious and political leaders. He was becoming too dangerous to the powerful. Result? Imprisonment. Even in prison, John was not bothered about his personal life; he was more worried about his people. He was hoping that after his imprisonment, Jesus would have taken the lead role to set free his people. When nothing was happening after his imprisonment, John sent word to Jesus asking him the key question: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” (Matthew 11:3)

Jesus did not answer this question directly since the idea of freedom was very different between Jesus and John. John’s idea of freedom for the Israelites revolved around these steps: drive away the powerful, capture power from them, and set the people free – in that order. Jesus’ idea began with setting the people free, free from personal bondages first. This is where he seems to resonate with Prophet Isaiah’s dream: Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. (Isaiah 35: 5-6)

The lines leading up to these two verses of Isaiah’s dream give us deep thoughts. In the preceding verse Isaiah says: “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” (Isaiah 35: 4). When I read the word ‘vengeance’ my mind was curious to find out how God’s vengeance would work. But, what a disappointment! Verses 5 and 6 talk nothing about vengeance. Healing the blind, the deaf and the lame is surely not a way of vengeance, we argue. Think again. This is probably a much stronger vengeance. This is probably how God’s vengeance works. God performs miracles with a vengeance!

An ‘eye for an eye’ is the usual, narrow sense of the idea of vengeance. But, in line with the idea of ‘turning the other cheek’, ‘donating an eye to the one who plucks your eye’ is another form of vengeance. Doing good is a much stronger way of responding to evil. Such ‘vengeance’ does take place in the world even today. Here is an incident that took place more than 17 years back. It gives us a lesson in ‘holy vengeance’.

In November 2005, Ahmad Khatib, a 12-year-old Palestinian boy, was killed by the Israeli soldiers who mistook his toy gun for real. His parents Ishmael Khatib and Ablah are simple people and Ishmael is a mechanic. Realising their mistake, the soldiers rushed Ahmad to a hospital. But it was too late. Ahmad died… He was killed by the Israeli soldiers.
Both the parents decided to do something marvellous. They decided to donate all the organs of Ahmad to the hospital in Israel. Many Palestinians were furious with this decision. When asked about this decision, Ishmael said: “They (Israeli forces) killed my son who was healthy, and we want to give his organs to those who need them… I feel very good that my son’s organs are helping six Israelis. I feel that my son has entered the heart of every Israeli. We are doing it for humane purposes and for the sake of the world’s children and the children of this country. I have taken this decision because I have a message for the world: that the Palestinian people want peace - for everyone.” Ahmad’s mother, Ablah, said: “We have no problem whether it is an Israeli or a Palestinian (who receives his organs) because it will give them life.” (A victory over death and hate, Nov. 9, 2005 – timesonline.co.uk)
This gesture of Ishmael is all the more marvellous since he spent time in Israeli jails in the 1980s as a militant who fought against occupation. But now he runs the Ahmed Khatib Center for Peace, a small youth center in the Jenin refugee camp. (arabamericannews.com)

The last three days in our calendar – namely, December 8,9 and 10 teach us how we can dream God-sized dreams and also bring God’s blessings on this world with vengeance. On December 8 we celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Our Mother Mary. She underwent all the pains of Roman suppression, but kept her dreams of the Messiah alive in her heart. Hence, she gave birth to her dreams in the form of Jesus.

On December 9 we observed the International Anticorruption Day and on December 10, the Human Rights Day. Both these days give us two choices: blame the system and bury our dreams for a better tomorrow in a heap of complaints, or, take efforts to bring God’s justice and goodness with vengeance. We believe that God ‘comes with vengeance’ only to shower blessings. Jesus continued this style in his life. It is our duty to continue this rich tradition of ‘vengeance’ during this Advent Season.

Since we began this Sunday’s reflection with the book, ‘Chase the Lion’, let me close with the lovely manifesto of the Lion Chaser given by Mark Batterson, at the beginning of the book:
The Lion Chaser’s Manifesto
Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death.
Run to the roar.
Set God-sized goals. Pursue God-given passions.
Go after a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention.
Stop pointing out problems. Become part of the solution.
Stop repeating the past. Start creating the future.
Face your fears. Fight for your dreams.
Grab opportunity by the mane and don’t let go!
Live like today is the first day and last day of your life.
Burn sinful bridges. Blaze new trails.
Live for the applause of nail-scarred hands.
Don’t let what’s wrong with you keep you from worshiping what’s right with God.
Dare to fail. Dare to be different.
Quit holding out. Quit holding back. Quit running away.

Chase the lion.

May the Advent Season help us set God-sized goals and realize them, so that we can hear “the applause of nail-scarred hands” as we enter the Kingdom of Light!

“If your dream doesn't scare you, it is too small” அதாவது, "உங்கள் கனவு உங்களை அஞ்சி நடுங்கச் செய்யவில்லையெனில், அது மிகச் சிறியது" என்று தன் நூலின் முகப்பில் கூறுகிறார்.

No to Christmas rush

A little child will lead them

II Sunday of Advent

We began the Advent Season last Sunday. Advent, as we know, is a season of expectation and preparation. Now that we have travelled through seven days of this season, we can examine ourselves and see what are our expectations and how are we preparing ourselves for Christmas. The commercial world, unfortunately, seems to have hi-jacked Christmas and is dictating terms to us as to how we should prepare for the feast of Christmas. Here is a news item in which a Bishop is appealing to his people not to be swayed by the frenzy of ‘the holiday season’:
Meaning of season lost by rushing Christmas celebration, bishop says
By Catholic News Service (CNS) - Dec-1-2010
Salt Lake City Bishop John C. Wester (Now, the Archbishop of of Santa Fe) has urged Catholics to hold off celebrating the Christmas season until it officially begins on the church calendar on Dec. 24. (In the commercial calendar, Christmas celebrations began soon after the Thanksgiving Day)
In his first pastoral letter as Salt Lake City's bishop, he urged the state's Catholics to keep true to the spirit of Advent -- a season of preparation which he said has been "neglected in many places" and often "overshadowed by the holiday season."
In the letter, Bishop Wester described the Christmas holiday season as one where many "rush from one thing to the next," stirring momentum "to get all the decorations up, celebrate the event and quickly dismantle all the decorations" to move to the next event. (CNS)

Given the least chance, the commercial world would turn everything into a commodity. I would like to share with you three world ‘events’ which have been turned into ‘commodities’. These are random samples:

On November 9, 1989, the world witnessed the fall of the Berlin wall that divided Germany into the East and the West. It was eulogised as a social revolution brought about by the will power of the people of Germany. But, on that day when people from East Germany, officially the German Democratic Republic (GDR) crossed over to West Germany (FRG – the Federal Republic of Germany), the supermarkets on the western side of the wall were kept open throughout the night. People from GDR spent the whold day and night on a buying spree. It looked as if the Wall was brought down only to help the people of the East shop in the West. Within a few months, the ‘fallen wall’ became a lucrative commodity. Pieces of that wall were sold as souvenirs. One need not be surprised if counterfeit pieces of Berlin Wall are still sold!
There have also been rumours of how the debris of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, New York, after the 9/11 attack of Sep.11, 2001, were made into souvenirs and SOLD. As all of us know, the 9/11 attack became a media event for the whole world. There were even competitions among the TV channels in telecasting the attack more and more dramatically. In 2005, a book (edited by Dana Heller) was published with the title: “The Selling of 9/11 – How a National Tragedy Became a Commodity”.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, once again, we saw how the mainstream media as well as the social media were trying to compete with one another to project this tragedy as a dramatic episode. We also know how the ruthless market was exploiting this tragedy for making profit, by selling fake testing kits and vaccines. Berlin wall, WTC attack, COVID-19… nothing is left out of the avaricious clutches of the commercial world.

The commercial world seems to dominate religious festivals with its own ritual and price-tag for ‘celebration’. Of all the religious festivals, Christmas seems to suffer the most due to the marketing strategies of the commercial world, with an overload of gifts and decoration pieces.

Advent is a grace-filled time to step aside from the mad rush of ‘celebration’ and spend quiet time in ‘expectation’. But, what do we expect in this season? We know that God can come in various ways – least expected ways – into our lives. Sometimes, God, not only surprises us, but also shocks us by the way he enters our lives in the most unexpected ways. Here is a story that is posted in the social media about how an expected guest can come in unexpected ways:

The city parish church was filling up with people for the Sunday Mass. Since there was an announcement that the new Parish Priest was arriving on that Sunday, the church was overflowing. A homeless person sat outside the church and greeted everyone as they passed by. Only a few reciprocated his greeting. The hat he had placed in front of him was empty.
When it was time for the Mass, the homeless person entered the church and proceeded to the front. An usher ran behind him, blocked his way and told him to go back to the last bench. The homeless person obliged with a smile. Then a member of the parish council went to the altar and said: “Dear friends, all of us are eagerly awaiting to meet the new parish priest. I have not seen him myself. He sent me a message just a few minutes back saying that he has already arrived and is among us.”
When the member of the parish council said this, people turned to the entrance of the church and in eager anticipation began clapping. The homeless person who was sitting in the last bench stood up and began walking towards the altar. The applause died out and people began to murmur.
The homeless person went up to the altar and introduced himself as the new Parish Priest. He then recounted his experience that morning. Many bowed their heads in shame and some of them wept. The pastor said: “I wish all of us go home and reflect on what happened here this morning. See you next week!”

This is a lovely ‘parable’ for the Advent Season. God comes to us in the most unexpected form and, perhaps, God is already present among us – Emmanuel, God with us. But, we, with our pre-conceived expectations, can miss God.

Let us come back to Bishop Wester of Salt Lake City. For the commercial world, what the Bishop said would be pretty ‘heretical’. If the commercial world got a chance, they would have kidnapped the Bishop, and kept him locked up until Christmas sales was over.

In the Gospel today, we meet John the Baptist who also was locked up since he challenged the easy-going lifestyle of the religious leaders and Herod. Although he was only ‘a voice in the wilderness’, he was quite loud and clear. Hence, he needed to be silenced before he became a greater threat. This was achieved sooner than later during the birthday party of Herod. It is significant that the end of John the Baptist came during a banquet where wine was flowing in excess. This serves as a warning that the real and true spirit of Christmas can be killed when there is an excess of ‘commercial Christmas’.

Prophets who speak out the bitter truth have often met with rejection and opposition. But, our world requires more such Prophets. The qualities of the prophets who lead us back to truth and to God are enumerated in the first reading today (Isaiah 11:1-10). If these prophets were allowed to operate, our world would become a lovely home where everyone can live in harmony and peace. This is the dream portrayed by Prophet Isaiah in the first reading.

Isaiah is the prophet of Advent, and passages from his book are used as the first reading on most of the days leading up to Christmas. This year – Year A of the liturgical cycle – on all the four Sundays, readings from the Prophet Isaiah are given as the first reading. Isaiah is also the most-quoted prophet on Advent weekdays. Of the 17 daily Masses over the first three weeks, passages from Isaiah are proclaimed 14 times. In most of these passages Isaiah gives us lovely dreams of the world filled with peace and harmony with the arrival of the Emmanuel – God with us!

Last week Isaiah gave us the dream of swords being turned into ploughshares – a world without war. This week we are given another dream to long for – a dream of peaceful co-exitance:
Isaiah 11: 6-9
The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
The infant will play near the cobra’s den, the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

These dreams of Isaiah seem too good to be true. We are not willing to believe that such a situation is possible. But, on second thoughts, why not? So many dreams proposed by the commercial world are also fantastic – like getting a fair skin in a week’s time with the help of a cream, getting rid of a headache in ten seconds with the help of a tablet etc. If we can believe in those fantasies, why not give a fair chance to the ‘fantasy’ of Isaiah too? Let us dream that another world is possible – the world envisaged by Prophet Isaiah!

Our final thoughts revolve around the three Days we have observed on December 1, 2 and 3. On December 1 we observed World AIDS Day. On December 2, it was the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery and on December 3, we observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. If our Advent Season helps us to turn our attention from the ‘glittering stars’ to those suffering from AIDS, various forms of slavery and disabilities, then on Christmas Day, Jesus will truly be born in our families. That will be a true celebration of Christmas!
