II Sunday of Advent

We began the Advent Season last Sunday. Advent, as we know, is a season of expectation and preparation. Now that we have travelled through seven days of this season, we can examine ourselves and see what are our expectations and how are we preparing ourselves for Christmas. The commercial world, unfortunately, seems to have hi-jacked Christmas and is dictating terms to us as to how we should prepare for the feast of Christmas. Here is a news item in which a Bishop is appealing to his people not to be swayed by the frenzy of ‘the holiday season’:

Salt Lake City Bishop John C. Wester (Now, the Archbishop of of Santa Fe) has urged Catholics to hold off celebrating the Christmas season until it officially begins on the church calendar on Dec. 24. (In the commercial calendar, Christmas celebrations began soon after the Thanksgiving Day)

In his first pastoral letter as Salt Lake City's bishop, he urged the state's Catholics to keep true to the spirit of Advent -- a season of preparation which he said has been "neglected in many places" and often "overshadowed by the holiday season."

In the letter, Bishop Wester described the Christmas holiday season as one where many "rush from one thing to the next," stirring momentum "to get all the decorations up, celebrate the event and quickly dismantle all the decorations" to move to the next event. (CNS)

Given the least chance, the commercial world would turn everything into a commodity. I would like to share with you three world ‘events’ which have been turned into ‘commodities’. These are random samples:

On November 9, 1989, the world witnessed the fall of the Berlin wall that divided Germany into the East and the West. It was eulogised as a social revolution brought about by the will power of the people of Germany. But, on that day when people from East Germany, officially the German Democratic Republic (GDR) crossed over to West Germany (FRG – the Federal Republic of Germany), the supermarkets on the western side of the wall were kept open throughout the night. People from GDR spent the whold day and night on a buying spree. It looked as if the Wall was brought down only to help the people of the East shop in the West. Within a few months, the ‘fallen wall’ became a lucrative commodity. Pieces of that wall were sold as souvenirs. One need not be surprised if counterfeit pieces of Berlin Wall are still sold!

There have also been rumours of how the debris of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, New York, after the 9/11 attack of Sep.11, 2001, were made into souvenirs and SOLD. As all of us know, the 9/11 attack became a media event for the whole world. There were even competitions among the TV channels in telecasting the attack more and more dramatically. In 2005, a book (edited by Dana Heller) was published with the title: “The Selling of 9/11 – How a National Tragedy Became a Commodity”.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, once again, we saw how the mainstream media as well as the social media were trying to compete with one another to project this tragedy as a dramatic episode. We also know how the ruthless market was exploiting this tragedy for making profit, by selling fake testing kits and vaccines. Berlin wall, WTC attack, COVID-19… nothing is left out of the avaricious clutches of the commercial world.

The commercial world seems to dominate religious festivals with its own ritual and price-tag for ‘celebration’. Of all the religious festivals, Christmas seems to suffer the most due to the marketing strategies of the commercial world, with an overload of gifts and decoration pieces.

Advent is a grace-filled time to step aside from the mad rush of ‘celebration’ and spend quiet time in ‘expectation’. But, what do we expect in this season? We know that God can come in various ways – least expected ways – into our lives. Sometimes, God, not only surprises us, but also shocks us by the way he enters our lives in the most unexpected ways. Here is a story that is posted in the social media about how an expected guest can come in unexpected ways:

The city parish church was filling up with people for the Sunday Mass. Since there was an announcement that the new Parish Priest was arriving on that Sunday, the church was overflowing. A homeless person sat outside the church and greeted everyone as they passed by. Only a few reciprocated his greeting. The hat he had placed in front of him was empty.

When it was time for the Mass, the homeless person entered the church and proceeded to the front. An usher ran behind him, blocked his way and told him to go back to the last bench. The homeless person obliged with a smile. Then a member of the parish council went to the altar and said: “Dear friends, all of us are eagerly awaiting to meet the new parish priest. I have not seen him myself. He sent me a message just a few minutes back saying that he has already arrived and is among us.”

When the member of the parish council said this, people turned to the entrance of the church and in eager anticipation began clapping. The homeless person who was sitting in the last bench stood up and began walking towards the altar. The applause died out and people began to murmur.

The homeless person went up to the altar and introduced himself as the new Parish Priest. He then recounted his experience that morning. Many bowed their heads in shame and some of them wept. The pastor said: “I wish all of us go home and reflect on what happened here this morning. See you next week!” 

This is a lovely ‘parable’ for the Advent Season. God comes to us in the most unexpected form and, perhaps, God is already present among us – Emmanuel, God with us. But, we, with our pre-conceived expectations, can miss God.

Let us come back to Bishop Wester of Salt Lake City. For the commercial world, what the Bishop said would be pretty ‘heretical’. If the commercial world got a chance, they would have kidnapped the Bishop, and kept him locked up until Christmas sales was over.

In the Gospel today, we meet John the Baptist who also was locked up since he challenged the easy-going lifestyle of the religious leaders and Herod. Although he was only ‘a voice in the wilderness’, he was quite loud and clear. Hence, he needed to be silenced before he became a greater threat. This was achieved sooner than later during the birthday party of Herod. It is significant that the end of John the Baptist came during a banquet where wine was flowing in excess. This serves as a warning that the real and true spirit of Christmas can be killed when there is an excess of ‘commercial Christmas’.

Prophets who speak out the bitter truth have often met with rejection and opposition. But, our world requires more such Prophets. The qualities of the prophets who lead us back to truth and to God are enumerated in the first reading today (Isaiah 11:1-10). If these prophets were allowed to operate, our world would become a lovely home where everyone can live in harmony and peace. This is the dream portrayed by Prophet Isaiah in the first reading.

Isaiah is the prophet of Advent, and passages from his book are used as the first reading on most of the days leading up to Christmas. This year – Year A of the liturgical cycle – on all the four Sundays, readings from the Prophet Isaiah are given as the first reading. Isaiah is also the most-quoted prophet on Advent weekdays. Of the 17 daily Masses over the first three weeks, passages from Isaiah are proclaimed 14 times. In most of these passages Isaiah gives us lovely dreams of the world filled with peace and harmony with the arrival of the Emmanuel – God with us!

Last week Isaiah gave us the dream of swords being turned into ploughshares – a world without war. This week we are given another dream to long for – a dream of peaceful co-exitance:

Isaiah 11: 6-9

The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.

The infant will play near the cobra’s den, the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

These dreams of Isaiah seem too good to be true. We are not willing to believe that such a situation is possible. But, on second thoughts, why not? So many dreams proposed by the commercial world are also fantastic – like getting a fair skin in a week’s time with the help of a cream, getting rid of a headache in ten seconds with the help of a tablet etc. If we can believe in those fantasies, why not give a fair chance to the ‘fantasy’ of Isaiah too? Let us dream that another world is possible – the world envisaged by Prophet Isaiah!

Our final thoughts revolve around the three Days we have observed on December 1, 2 and 3. On December 1 we observed World AIDS Day. On December 2, it was the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery and on December 3, we observed the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. If our Advent Season helps us to turn our attention from the ‘glittering stars’ to those suffering from AIDS, various forms of slavery and disabilities, then on Christmas Day, Jesus will truly be born in our families. That will be a true celebration of Christmas!

ஐரோப்பிய வரலாற்றில் தனியிடம் பெற்ற ஒரு நிகழ்வு, 1989ம் ஆண்டு நவம்பர் 9ம் தேதி, இடம்பெற்றது. ஜெர்மன் நாட்டை, கிழக்கு, மேற்கு என்று இரண்டாகப் பிரித்திருந்த பெர்லின் சுவர், அன்று வீழ்த்தப்பட்டபோது, உலகின் பல நாடுகளில், மக்கள் மகிழ்ந்தனர். மக்கள் தாங்களாகவே இணைந்து மேற்கொண்ட சமுதாயப் புரட்சியால், ஜெர்மனி, ஒரே நாடாக இணைந்தது என்று வரலாறு சொன்னது. ஆனால், விரைவில், அந்த வரலாற்று நிகழ்வு, வர்த்தகப் பொருளாக மாற்றப்பட்டது. இடிக்கப்பட்ட அந்தச் சுவர், சிறு சிறு துண்டுகளாக்கப்பட்டு, நினைவுப் பொருள்களாக விற்பனை செய்யப்பட்டன. பெர்லின் சுவர் என்று சொல்லி, போலித் துண்டுகளும் விற்கப்பட்டதாகச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

2001ம் ஆண்டு, செப்டம்பர் 11ம் தேதி, நியூயார்க் நகரில், உலக வர்த்தகக் கோபுரங்கள் இரண்டு, விமானங்களால் தாக்கப்பட்டு, இடிந்து விழுந்தன. அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டு வரலாற்றைக் காயப்படுத்திய ஒரு நிகழ்வு இது என்று கூறப்பட்டது. இக்கோபுரங்களின் இடிபாடுகளும், நினைவுப் பொருள்களாக விற்பனை செய்யப்பட்டன.

கடந்த மூன்று ஆண்டுகளாக மனித குடும்பத்தை வதைத்து வரும் கோவிட் பெருந்தொற்று காலத்தில், மக்களின் நலனுக்காக தங்கள் உயிரையும் பணயம் வைத்து உழைத்த மருத்துவர்களையும், உதவியாளர்களையும் நாம் மறக்க இயலாது. அதே நேரம், மக்களின் உடல் நலனையும், வேதனையையும் மூலதனமாக்கி பல மருத்துவ மனைகளும், மருத்துவ நிறுவனங்களும் செல்வம் சேர்த்துள்ளன என்பது நம்மை வெட்கத்திலும், வேதனையிலும் ஆழ்த்துகிறது. அத்துடன், கோவிட் பெருந்தொற்றை கண்டுபிடிக்க உதவும் கருவிகளிலும், இந்த பெருந்தொற்றிற்கு பயன்படுத்தப்பட்ட தடுப்பு மருந்துகளிலும் போலிகளும், கலப்படங்களும் செய்யப்பட்டன என்பது, வர்த்தக உலகின் பேராசை வெறியை வெளிச்சமிட்டு காட்டியது.

சமுதாயப் புரட்சி, தீவிரவாதத் தாக்குதல், மக்களை வதைக்கும் பெருந்தொற்று என்று இவ்வுலகில் எந்நிகழ்வு நடந்தாலும், அதை, எவ்விதம் விற்பனை செய்யமுடியும் என்பதில், வர்த்தக உலகம், தீவிர முயற்சிகள் மேற்கொள்கிறது. அனைத்தையும் விற்பனைப் பொருளாக்கி, விலைபேசும் இப்போக்கு, மதம், கல்வி, நலவாழ்வு, என்ற அனைத்திலும் ஊடுருவியிருப்பது, வேதனையளிக்கிறது.

புனிதமான உண்மைகளையும், உணர்வுகளையும் கொண்டாடுவதற்கென்று உருவாக்கப்பட்ட சமய விழாக்கள் அனைத்திலும், வர்த்தக வாடை வீசுவதை நாம் அறிவோம். சமய விழாக்களை எவ்வகையில் கொண்டாடவேண்டும் என்று, வியாபார உலகம் வழிகாட்டுகிறது. சமய விழாக்களின் அடிப்படையாக விளங்கும் உண்மைகள், சவால்கள் நிறைந்தவை என்பதால், அவற்றைப் பற்றிய எண்ணங்களுக்கு முதலிடம் கொடுக்காமல், நமது சமய விழாக்களை பொழுதுபோக்கு அம்சங்களால் நிறைப்பது, வர்த்தக உலகின் குறிக்கோளாக விளங்குகிறது. வர்த்தக உலகம் விளம்பரப்படுத்தும் பொழுதுபோக்கு அம்சங்களில் அதிகம் சிக்கியிருப்பது, நம் கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழா.

"அவசரப்பட்டு கிறிஸ்மஸ் கொண்டாட்டங்களை ஆரம்பிக்காதீர்கள், தயவுசெய்து, டிசம்பர் 24 இரவு வரை காத்திருங்கள்" என்று, அமெரிக்காவின் Salt Lake City மறைமாவட்டத்தின் முன்னாள் ஆயர் John Wester அவர்கள் (தற்போது Santa Fe பெரு மறைமாவட்டத்தின் பேராயர்), சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன், தன் மறைமாவட்ட மக்களுக்கு ஒரு வேண்டுகோள் மடலை அனுப்பினார். ஆயர் அனுப்பிய அந்த வேண்டுகோளை, வியாபார உலகின் பிடியிலிருந்து, கிறிஸ்மஸ் விழாவை விடுதலை செய்யும் ஒரு முயற்சியென்று பாராட்டலாம்.

கிறிஸ்து பிறப்பு விழாவின் உண்மைப் பொருளை உணர்வதற்கு நமக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள வரம்நிறைந்த காலம், திருவருகைக் காலம். இறைவன் வருவார் என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் நாம் காத்திருக்கும் காலம் இது. ஆனால், இறைவன் எந்த வடிவில் வருவார் என்பதை நாம் அறியோம். நாம் எதிர்பாராத வழிகளில் வந்து, நம்மை வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்துவது, இறைவனுக்கே உரிய அழகு. இறைவனின் வரவு, நம்மை, வியப்பிலும், சில வேளைகளில் அதிர்ச்சியிலும் ஆழ்த்தமுடியும் என்பதைக் கூறும் பல கதைகளை நாம் கேட்டிருக்கிறோம். அத்தகைய கதைகளில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.

வசதிமிகுந்த நகரப் பங்குக் கோவில் ஒன்றில், ஞாயிறு திருப்பலிக்காக மக்கள் கூடிவந்தனர். அன்று, அந்த பங்கிற்கு புதிய பங்கு அருள்பணியாளர் வருகிறார் என்று அறிவிக்கப்பட்டிருந்ததால், வழக்கத்திற்கு மேலாக மக்கள் பெருமளவில் கோவிலுக்கு வந்திருந்தனர். கோவிலுக்கு வெளியே, வீடற்ற ஒருவர் அமர்ந்து, கோவிலுக்குள் செல்வோர் அனைவருக்கும் வணக்கம் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். ஒருசிலர் மட்டும் அவருக்கு பதில் வணக்கம் சொன்னார்கள். அவருக்கு முன் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த தொப்பியில் ஒருவரும் தர்மம் எதுவும் தரவில்லை.

திருப்பலி நேரம் நெருங்கியபோது, வீடற்ற அம்மனிதர், கோவிலுக்குள் புகுந்து, பீடத்தை நோக்கி நடந்துசென்றார். அங்கிருந்த ஒரு பெரியவர், அவருக்குப்பின் விரைந்து சென்று, அவரைத் தடுத்து நிறுத்தி, அவரை, கோவிலின் பின்பக்கம் சென்று அமருமாறு கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். வீடற்ற மனிதரும், ஒரு புன்சிரிப்புடன், இறுதி பெஞ்சில் சென்று அமர்ந்தார்.

"இன்று இங்கு நடந்தது நமக்கெல்லாம் நல்லதொரு பாடம். வீட்டுக்குச் சென்று இதைப்பற்றி சிந்திப்போம். அடுத்தவாரம் நாம் மீண்டும் சந்திப்போம்" என்று, அப்புதிய பங்குத்தந்தை கூறி, மக்களை அனுப்பிவைத்தார்.இறைவன் இவ்வடிவில்தான் வருவார், அவரது வரவை இப்படித்தான் கொண்டாடவேண்டும் என்று, சில வர்த்தக மந்திரங்களைச் சொல்லித்தரும் இவ்வுலகின் வழிகளிலிருந்து விலகி, அவரது உண்மையான வரவுக்காக, வழிமேல் விழிவைத்து காத்திருக்க, இந்த ஞாயிறு வழிபாடு நம்மை அழைக்கிறது. இறைவனின் வரவுக்காக நம்மையே எவ்விதம் தயாரிப்பது என்ற வழிமுறைகளை, திருமுழுக்கு யோவான், இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில், ஓர் எச்சரிக்கையாக விடுக்கிறார்.

அவர் இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் சொல்லியிருக்கும் வார்த்தைகள், எவ்வித இனிப்பும் கலக்காத, கசப்பான உண்மை. கசப்பான மருந்து. இத்தகைய உண்மைகளை மறைத்து, அந்த உண்மைகளைச் சொல்பவர்களை மறைத்து, மற்ற கனவு நாயகர்களை, அவர்கள் விளம்பரப்படுத்தும் வியாபாரக் கொண்டாட்டங்களை நம் மனங்களில் பதிய வைப்பதுதானே, வர்த்தக உலகின் விருப்பம்.

“கிறிஸ்மஸ் கொண்டாட்டங்களை இவ்வளவு சீக்கிரம் ஆம்பிக்காதீர்கள்” என்று சொன்ன ஆயர் Wester அவர்களை, வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தால், வியாபார உலகம் கடத்திக் கொண்டுபோய், கிறிஸ்மஸ் முடியும்வரை கண்காணாத இடத்தில் வைத்துவிடும். கசப்பான உண்மைகளைச் சொன்ன திருமுழுக்கு யோவானை, யூத மதத் தலைவர்கள், இந்த உலகைவிட்டே அனுப்பத் துடித்தார்கள். ஏரோது மன்னன் வழியே, விரைவில், அனுப்பியும் விட்டார்கள். உண்மையைச் சொல்லும் எந்த இறைவாக்கினருக்கும் ஊரில் நல்ல பெயர் இருந்ததில்லையே! ஆனால், உண்மையைச் சொல்லி, உலகில் நன்மையை வளர்க்கும் இறைவாக்கினர்கள் நமது உலகிற்கு தேவை.இறைவனின் பக்கம் நம்மை வழிநடத்தும் இறைவாக்கினர்கள், இறைப்பணியாளர்கள் எப்படிப்பட்டவர்களாய் இருப்பார்கள்; அவர்கள் உலகில் இருந்தால் இவ்வுலகம் எவ்வளவு அழகாக மாறும் என்பனவற்றை, இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா, ஓர் அழகியக் கனவாகத் தந்திருக்கிறார், இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில். இந்த வரிகளுக்கு விளக்கமே தேவையில்லை. எசாயாவின் இந்தக் கனவு, இன்று, நாம் வாழும் உலகில் நடைமுறையாக வேண்டும் என்ற ஏக்கத்தோடு இந்த வரிகளுக்குச் செவிமடுப்போம்.

இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா 11: 1-10

ஆண்டவரின் ஆவி அவர்மேல் தங்கியிருக்கும்: ஞானம், மெய்யுணர்வு, அறிவுரைத்திறன், ஆற்றல், நுண்மதி, ஆண்டவரைப்பற்றிய அச்ச உணர்வு - இவற்றை அந்த ஆவி அவருக்கு அருளும். அவரும் ஆண்டவருக்கு அஞ்சி நடப்பதில் மகிழ்ந்திருப்பார். கண் கண்டதைக் கொண்டு மட்டும் அவர் நீதி வழங்கார்: காதால் கேட்டதைக் கொண்டு மட்டும் அவர் தீர்ப்புச் செய்யார்: நேர்மையோடு ஏழைகளுக்கு நீதி வழங்குவார்: நடுநிலையோடு நாட்டின் எளியோரது வழக்கை விசாரிப்பார்: வார்த்தை எனும் கோலினால் கொடியவரை அடிப்பார்: உதட்டில் எழும் மூச்சினால் தீயோரை அழிப்பார். நேர்மை அவருக்கு அரைக்கச்சை: உண்மை அவருக்கு இடைக்கச்சை.

இத்தகைய நேரியவர்கள் வாழும் நாட்டில் என்ன நடக்கும் என்பதையும் இந்தக் கனவில் தொடர்ந்து கூறுகிறார் இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா:
