Hallmark of Lent and Spring - CHANGE

The Truth of Life

5th Sunday of Lent

Of the four seasons, Spring is labeled as the season of hope, since the dormant life under the snow spring back to life. Most of the weather channels say that March 20, Tuesday, is the ‘official’ beginning of Spring. If hope is the hallmark of Spring, then Spring arrived in Mumbai on March 11. Yes. On that day around 50,000 farmers marched into Mumbai to press for their demands. Having been forced to the culture of death, as evident from the number of suicides, the farmers of Maharashtra sprang to life and demanded justice. From the media reports, we learn that the government of Maharashtra agreed to fulfill the demands of the farmers. Hence, the farmers ended their protest on March 12. This date, namely, March 12, reminds us of another peaceful protest that began 88 years back. Yes, on March 12, 1930 Gandhiji began the ‘Salt March’ (also known as the Dandi March and the Dandi Satyagraha).

Both these marches taking place in March, serve as symbols of not only the Spring season, but also of the Lenten Season. The weather experts have designated March 20 as the first day of Spring. Some have even mentioned the time of the ‘arrival’ as 9-16 pm. But, we know that the spring season does not spring up at the given hour. It has had a long gestation period under the blanket of snow and slowly (not abruptly) paints the world in multi-coloured leaves and flowers.
Our generation, accustomed to ‘instant’ and ‘ready-made’ products, does not have the patience to see this slow, imperceptible change that takes place in nature. Humankind will be a lot better if we learn to live with and learn from the cycles of nature, rather than try to portray them as machines that bring about changes at the touch of a button!

For us, Christians, spring season began along with Lenten Season. On the First Sunday of Lent, we spoke about Lent and the Spring Season. Today, the Fifth Sunday of Lent, we are back to this theme. To add more relevance to this theme of hopeful changes that mark Lent and Spring, today’s Gospel brings the one of the famous sayings of Jesus on the ‘grain of wheat’.
Last week we reflected on one of the most famous quotes from the Bible known as the ‘gospel of all the gospels’, namely, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3: 16) Today we have another equally famous quote from John’s gospel, namely, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12: 24)
Both these passages from John’s gospel have been used as independent quotes without much reference to the circumstances in which Jesus spoke these words. In fact, the whole of John’s gospel is considered more of a theological treatise rather than a historical narration. Hence most of the quotes from this gospel can be used in very many contexts. Still, it would be helpful to think of what prompted Jesus to say these words.

The opening lines of today’s gospel give us the context in which Jesus said this famous ‘parable’ of the grain of wheat. Here are the opening lines: Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, who was from Beth-sa'ida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." (John 12: 20-21)
In the following verses, Jesus speaks about his death. My limited human logic felt that Jesus spoke out of tune in this circumstance. Since the Greeks must have come seeking some spiritual wisdom from Jesus, he could have easily spoken to those foreigners a great parable. After all, he was known as a master story teller. Instead, he talks about his death. Why did the Greeks come to see Jesus? Why did Jesus speak in this vein? The answers to these questions are given by Fr Munachi E. Ezeogu, in his homily. His explanation is quite enlightening and I wish to share this with you:
The Greek philosopher Socrates is regarded as one of the wisest men of all time. This man… devoted his life to exposing ignorance, hypocrisy and conceit among his fellow Athenians and calling them to a radical re-examination of life…But those in power arrested him, tried him and sentenced him to death…Subsequent generations of Greeks came to regard Socrates as a martyr for truth. They resolved never again to persecute anyone on account of their beliefs.
By the time of Jesus, the Greeks had become among the most broad-minded people in the world. Various religious and philosophical traditions flourished among them and vied for popularity. We see in today's gospel that among the huge crowds that had come to Jerusalem for the Passover feast were some Greeks. It did not take these Greeks long to see that all was not well in Jerusalem. So they came to see Jesus. Why did they come to see Jesus? Although John has somewhat spiritualised the story, thereby giving the impression that they came to seek admission into the "body" of Christ (John 12:32), it is more probable that they came to alert Jesus of the seriousness of the danger surrounding him and to suggest to him to flee with them to Greece, the land of freedom. The response that Jesus gives to their request shows that it has to do with his impending death and that he has chosen to stay and face it rather than seek a way to escape it.
This explanation seems to remove the incongruence that I felt, namely, between the Greeks seeking Jesus and Jesus talking of his death.

Jesus chooses to stay on and face the consequence. He begins his response with the famous line -
“The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified.” Thrice in John’s gospel we see the line ‘the hour has not yet come’. The first time it was in the wedding at Cana: When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come." (John 2: 3-4) On two more occasions during the public ministry of Jesus the phrase ‘his hour had not yet come.’ is used. (John 7:30; 8:20). Now Jesus declares that His hour has come… The hour for what? The hour to become a life-giving seed by sacrificing life.
The ‘parable’ of the grain of wheat has great depth. Why was the grain of wheat created? I could think of two primary reasons and one secondary reason. The primary reasons are: to serve as food for other living beings or to become a seed in order to multiply its own kind. These are the prime reasons why a grain of wheat has been created. The secondary reason I could think of was that this grain could be used as a decorative piece. This grain remains alone, without being productive… just a show-piece. This is what we see in the first part of Jesus’ saying: “unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone”. Alone… artificially alone!

The ‘parable’ of the grain of wheat reminded me of another ‘parable’:
A young man and a woman wanted peace in the world and peace in their heart. But they were very frustrated… the world seemed to be falling apart. They would read the papers and get depressed.  One day they decided to go shopping, and picked a store at random. They walked into the store and were surprised to see Jesus behind the counter. They went up to Jesus and asked: "What do you sell?”  Jesus replied: “Oh, just about anything!  Feel free to walk up and down the aisles, make a list of things you want, and when you come back, I will see what I can do for you.”  Both of them walked up and down the aisles and saw all sorts of things they wanted: peace on earth, no more war, no hunger or poverty, peace in families, no more drugs, clean air, and careful use of resources. They made a list of the things they wanted and handed it over to Jesus. He read through the list, looked at them and smiled.  “No problem,” He said.  Then He bent down behind the counter and picked up a number of small packets.  “What are these?” they asked.  “Seed packets," Jesus replied.  "This is a catalogue store.”  In surprise, they said: “You mean we don’t get the finished product?”  “No," He answered.  "This is a place of dreams. When you choose what you want, I give you the seeds. You plant the seeds and watch them grow. There is one catch, however: you will not receive the benefit of your good work -- others will.”

Both Lent and Spring drive home the theme of ‘change’. Our ‘now’ generation wants to see ‘instantaneous’ changes and becomes impatient with slow changes. We need to learn from Lent and Spring, that significant changes do not happen over-night.
The ‘parable’ of the grain of wheat and the ‘parable’ of the ‘dream shop’ tell us that even though God is the store owner, He does not give us our wishes and dreams as ‘ready-made’ ‘take-home’, ‘finished’ products. He would rather give us the starting points… the seeds! It is up to us to keep these seeds as decorative pieces or plant and nurture them into a fruitful future – a future in which we may not even live to enjoy the fruits! That is exactly the role of the grain of wheat!

Maharashtra Farmers’ March

(I am God's wheat, ground fine by the lion's teeth to be made purest bread for Christ.)

Pope Francis washes the feet of the young prisoners in Casal del Marmo

Rejoicing from within அகம் + மகிழ்தல்

For God So Loved The World

4th Sunday of Lent

On March 11, this Sunday, Pope Francis completes 60 years of religious life. On March 13, coming Tuesday, he will complete 5 years of service as the Bishop of Rome. As he celebrates his Diamond Jubilee as a Jesuit, and as he completes his service as the leader of the Catholic Church, we pray that the Good Shepherd guides him as his worthy Vicar on earth!

The 4th Sunday of Lent is celebrated as ‘Laetare Sunday’ – Rejoicing Sunday. Rejoicing is part and parcel of our lives. We have hundreds of reasons to rejoice. Surely one of them is when we experience forgiveness - giving and receiving. To celebrate this Rejoicing Sunday meaningfully, Pope Francis suggested a ‘feast of forgiveness’ in 2014.
“This coming Friday and Saturday will be a special penitential moment, called “24 hours for the Lord”. It will be a feast of forgiveness, which will take place simultaneously in many dioceses and parishes around the world. It will be a feast of forgiveness.” This was the invitation for the ‘Feast of Forgiveness’ extended to the whole world by Pope Francis, on March 23, 2014.
For the past four years we have been celebrating this ‘Feast of Forgiveness’ on the eve of the 4th Sunday of Lent. This year, on 9 and 10 of March, we celebrated the sacrament of reconciliation along with “24 hours for the Lord”.

True joy wells up from within when we experience the noble sentiments of forgiving and being forgiven. Reconciliation paves the way for true Rejoicing. This was evident in a news item that was published six years back in New York Times. What began as a glance over this news, turned into curiosity and led me towards some serious reflection. As I was reflecting on today’s Gospel, this news item, especially the picture (actually a video clipping) attached to it, was frequently flashing across my mind.
Let me share with you my thoughts on the picture as well as on the news feature. (The Vanishing Mind: Life, With Dementia - NYTimes, Feb.25,2012) Although this feature was about the problem of Alzheimer’s or Dementia in a prison in California, my attention was turned towards other factors related to this news.

First about the picture: This picture had a background – the high-rise wall, as found in any high-security prison. On the top of the wall ran a barbed wire. This barbed wire must have had a high-voltage electric current running through it 24x7. This ‘fortress’ was meant as a protection. ‘Protection’ for whom and against whom? Any child would answer this question saying that this ‘fortress’ was meant to protect the society from the criminals kept inside the walls. But, when I saw this picture, my mind thought otherwise… I thought that this wall was to protect the ‘inmates’ from the outside world. This reversal occurred to me because of what I saw in the foreground of this picture. In the foreground, there were two persons – one black and another white. The black person was about 50 years old and the white person was about 80. The black person had his hands wrapped around the shoulders of the white person and, possibly, was leading him somewhere. One can see the kindness in the eyes of the black person looking at the older white person.

The black person is Secel Montgomery Sr. In the video clipping, Sacel talks about how he killed his sister-in-law by stabbing her many times since she refused to give him money to buy drugs. Even in the prison his record had not been ‘clean’. Despite that, he has recently been entrusted with an extraordinary responsibility. He and other convicted killers at the California Men’s Colony help care for prisoners with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, assisting ailing inmates with the most intimate tasks: showering, shaving, applying deodorant, even changing adult diapers, says the feature.
If this experiment meets with even 50% of success, then, I feel that ‘salvation has come to California Men’s Colony’. “It’s a long road to recovery and I’m working on it…” are the closing words spoken by one of the prisoners in the video clipping. Isn’t this salvation? For this salvation to reach its fruition, these ‘inmates’ need to be shielded from the outside world… Now, tell me, whom should the high-rise wall protect?

Secondly, about the news-feature: The moment we think of prison cells, the first thoughts that crowd our minds are – crime, hatred, violence, abuse, punishment. I am of a firm opinion that punishment and imprisonment can only bring about minimal, temporary changes in a person. The real, lasting changes can come about only through love and kindness. We have heard of so many ‘so called criminals’, who have changed their entire life-style due to some kindness shown to them inside those hopeless cells.
Is there a place for kindness, compassion, and help in such a prison? You bet. I don’t think there is any place in the world so hopeless that can refuse entry to love and kindness. What is happening in California Men’s Colony is only the tip of the iceberg. All over the world, in so many millions of prison cells there is a chance, a place for love. Although this is not discussed in the feature, I can see how these little acts of love shown in those prison cells, bless those who give as well as those who receive.

Usually we are accustomed to seeing prisoners at the receiving end… of love and compassion from those who visit them. Sometimes these external helpers may tend to ‘preach’ to those who are inside. At such moments, we are aware what these ‘insiders’ would say: “It is easy for you to say these things… If you were in my place, then you would know!” An ‘outsider’ cannot bring significant changes on these ‘insiders’. What is the other alternative?
Real, lasting help can come from someone who is one among them. Imagine that a blameless person, wanting to help the prisoners, gets himself imprisoned; becomes one of the prisoners and then, from within, begins to change them… This help would be more acceptable than the help given by an ‘outsider’. But, is this possible in real-life? I don’t know. But, it has happened in other situations as in the case of St.Damien Joseph de Veuster of Moloka'i. He had worked for the leprosy (Hansen's disease) patients in Hawaii; was affected by the disease himself and died at the age of 49. His self-identification with the leprosy patients was total and complete. I am sure St.Damien must have got his inspiration for total identification and total immersion from Jesus’ Incarnation.

This total immersion, identification and Incarnation is spoken of in today’s Gospel in one of the most famous verses in the Bible: God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3: 16)
John 3:16 is probably the best loved verse in the Bible and it has been called "everybody's text" and the “gospel of the gospels”… This text is the very essence of the gospel. It tells us that the initiative in salvation is God’s love for man. As St. Augustine puts it: "God loves each one of us as if there were only one of us to love."

We have heard hundreds, perhaps thousands of love stories or stories of love. Most of these stories are just one frame from a full-length movie called life. What is happening in California prison day after day may not be ‘news-worthy’ on a daily basis. Similarly what is happening in our ordinary, day to day life is also a love story which may not get media attention.
As we are meditating on ‘God-so-loved-the-world’, we shall set aside some moments today and in the coming days during this Lenten Season to think of the continuous, but unrecognised love stories we experience in our own families. I know of families where the parent, the life-partner, a sibling is taking care of persons who cannot take care of themselves. This is not just a one-day, one month love-affair…But a year-long affair… for ten, twenty, thirty, forty and more years… Let us salute these silent stalwarts of true love and dedication who will not adorn any history book.

As we are reflecting on love, we cannot but think of the twisted, topsy-turvy definitions and images created around the word ‘love’. This misleading trend, prevalent in the world, is compared to getting cosy with darkness. We hear Jesus talking about this in the second half of today’s gospel: “The light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.” (John 3: 19-20)

There is a funny story to drive home the point how darkness can become so ‘comfortable’ to us that we are willing to stay in the dark: We act like the desert nomad in the story who woke up hungry in the middle of the night. He lit a candle and began eating dates from a bowl beside his bed. He took a bite from one and saw a worm in it; so he threw it out of the tent. He bit into the second date, found another worm, and threw it away also. Reasoning that he wouldn't have any dates left to eat if he continued to look for worms, he blew out the candle and quickly ate the rest of the dates!

Putting out the light of true conscience, we can swallow worm-infested ideas and still feel comfortable… Or, we can enjoy the light as per the invitation of Jesus in the last line of today’s Gospel: But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God. (John 2:21)
On March 9, Friday, “A Wrinkle in Time”, a science fantasy film was released. The trailer of this movie has the following line: “The only way to defeat the darkness is to become the light.” This statement brings to mind the famous line used by Amnesty International: “It's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”
Are we willing to come to the light that is Christ, in order to become the light of the world? Are we willing to light a candle, become a candle to dispel the darkness? Or, are we comfortable staying in despair and cursing the darkness that surrounds us?

Better to light one small candle...

Dementia Behind Bars

(The Vanishing Mind - Life, With Dementia: NYTimes, Feb.25,2012)

இந்த வாக்கியம் "நற்செய்திகளின் நற்செய்தி" (Gospel of the gospels) என்று சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

மார்ச் 9, இவ்வெள்ளியன்று, "A Wrinkle in Time" என்ற திரைப்படம் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. – “The only way to defeat the darkness is to become the Light.”
