VIOLENCE OF LOVE

Domestic violence By Cate220

Everyday in Vatican Radio we prepare a programme called – Today in History. I have mixed feelings preparing this programme. The events from history have inspired me to write quite a few reflections. But most of the time when I look at historical milestones, my heart goes heavy seeing how human history has been written more with blood than with any thing else. Violence has found a permanent abode among human beings.
Human beings have given various responses to violence. Let us try and reflect on three of them. The first is the ‘an-eye-for-an-eye-and-a-tooth-for-a-tooth’ style response. Although we keep reminding ourselves that this is ‘old testament’ and an eye for an eye will make all of us blind, we still seem to believe that old is gold as far as this style is concerned. This style of tit-for-tat is practised even today. Here is a sample:

Saudi Arabia urged not to paralyze man
By QMI Agency
Last Updated: August 22, 2010 10:10am
A judge in the northwest province of Tabuk in Saudi Arabia has allegedly sent letters to hospitals in the country asking if they could sever a man's spinal cord as punishment for paralyzing another man in a fight two years ago… So far, one hospital had said it was possible to paralyze the man through a medical procedure.
The BBC reported that 22-year-old Abdul-Aziz al-Mitairy told local Saudi newspaper Oakz that the accused paralyzed him by stabbing him in the back with a cleaver two years ago and that the man confessed to his crime in front of the police. He was sentenced to seven months in prison without any legal assistance.
Amnesty International said there is a chance that the court would not go through with it, instead sentencing the man to prison, a fine or a flogging.

I had to rub my eyes to see whether the date was wrong… But, no. It was August 2010, very much our own times. I wish and pray that this sentence was not carried out. What was more disturbing to me was the way a hospital had responded to the query of the judge. I can understand a judge, a single person, who could have been swayed by wrong reasoning. But, to see that a hospital was trying to go along this way of thinking…? Wither human race?

The second response to violence is what we see in today’s first reading from the Prophet Habakkuk. Habakkuk lived around 650 years before Christ. It was a time of violence. Violence was suffocating human reasoning. Sounds familiar? Yes. As late as September 30, 2010, we were on pins and needles when Allahabad High Court was supposed to deliver the verdict on the disputed land in Ayodhya. The nightmarish days of December 1992 filled our memories. The last two decades have seen enough and more violence in India and elsewhere, unfortunately with a tinge of religion – not real, true religion for sure!
When such violence erupts and we have nowhere to turn to, the human mind turns to the ultimate refuge: God. Prophet Habakkuk turns to God and says:
How long, O LORD, must I call for help, but you do not listen?
Or cry out to you, "Violence!" but you do not save?
Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong?
Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds.
Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.
(Habakkuk 1: 2-4)
Every one of these words has come out of my mouth quite often. Every day when we open the newspapers or watch the news hour on TV, our minds raise these very same questions. The response of the Lord is given in today’s liturgy.
Then the LORD replied: "Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. (Habakkuk 2: 2-3) The second response to violence is: appeal to God and await his intervention. This waiting may take a long time; but, believe that IT WILL HAPPEN.

The third response to violence is what Jesus and many others have given. Most of them have given this response with their own lives. We have millions of examples. Recently when Pope Benedict XVI went to England, he attended a prayer service at Westminster Abbey. The west door of this great national monument has enshrined ten 20th Century Martyrs. I wish to draw attention to three of them: Archbishop Oscar Romero, St Maximilian Kolbe and Martin Luther King Jr. We know that all of them were assassinated for upholding love over hatred.
In 2004, a book was published with the title: THE VIOLENCE OF LOVE Oscar Romero, compiled and translated by James R. Brockman, S. J. This book is a collection of various quotes of Archbishop Romero. Here is a quote from the opening page of this book: “THE VIOLENCE we preach is not the violence of the sword, the violence of hatred. It is the violence of love, of brotherhood, the violence that wills to beat weapons into sickles for work.” (Oscar Romero, November 27, 1977)
When John Paul II canonised Maximilian Kolbe on October 10, 1982 he declared the saint as a martyr of charity and "The Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century". Martin Luther King Jr., also laid down his life for higher, nobler ideals of love and justice. He was very much inspired by the champion of non-violence – Mahatma Gandhi whose birthday we celebrated on October 2nd. In his honour, this day is marked as the International Day of Non-Violence.

When we talk of violence most often we think of the violence that happens in the public forum – political or other. The violence that happens in our homes, in the privacy of our houses - within the four walls, within closed doors are more numerous and much deeper. Violence against our domestic helpers, against children, against women, against aged parents… this list is long and its intensity deep. Since they don’t get news-status, they tend to increase day after day. Only when such cruelties go way beyond the limits they come to the public.

For a true Christian, in fact, for a true human being the one and only response to violence is the third type we reflected on today… the response of non-violence… or, if you prefer, the ‘violence of love’ (if properly understood). Is this possible? Yes. If only we have faith… In today’s Gospel Jesus says this: “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.(Luke 17: 6)
Lord, increase our faith in all the noble human qualities.

(THE VIOLENCE OF LOVE Oscar Romero. Compiled and translated by James R. Brockman, S. J.)

திருத்தந்தை இரண்டாம் ஜான்பால் 1982ல் இவரைப் புனிதராக உயர்த்தியபோது, 'வன்முறையால் துன்புறும் நம் காலத்திற்குப் பாதுகாவலர்' "The Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century" என்று இவரைக் கூறினார்.

“Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being.”
“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”
