GREAT TO BE GRATEFUL

(Kindly visit this blog... It is quite inspiring. It will help you a LONG WAY in being grateful)

Last week we began our reflections on the verse “My cup overflows” of Psalm 23. Overflowing cup is a symbol of gratitude. Gratitude is one of the noblest attributes of a human being. It is more than a feeling. It is a point of view, a way of life. I would like to spend more time reflecting on this capacity of a human being – the capacity to be grateful.

I would like to reflect on four aspects of ‘Gratitude’. I am sure there are many more…
The First Aspect: Gratitude is always attached to Goodness. Wow, G and G! In Tamil as well, there is a similarity between the words gratitude and goodness… Nanri and Nanru. Here is a famous couplet form Thirukkural:
Nanri marappathu nanranru nanrallathu
Anre marappathu nanru.
Its translation goes like this:
Forgetting to be thankful is not good, whereas forgetting unpleasant things immediately is good.
Sometimes what seemed very unpleasant turned out to be good and we were thankful for them too.

The Second Aspect: Gratitude is not always expressed in words. More often gratitude is shown through non-verbal communication. When we read Psalm 23, it is very clear that the author is filled with gratitude; but not even once has he used the word ‘thanks’ or similar words throughout the Psalm. I wish to draw a parallel here with a life situation.
When a child grows up, most parents are very keen to teach the child to say “Thank you; Thanks Uncle; Thanks Auntie” etc. for any small gift given to the child or any favour shown. As soon as the child begins to speak, ‘Thanks’ is one of the first words taught to the child. Although we insist that the child says thanks for gifts received, it is a very different scenario at home. Let us imagine a scene at home. Daddy has bought a new dress for the child. The moment the child sees the dress, she runs to her Dad; hugs him and plants a sweet kiss on his cheeks. The next day the child wears the dress to school and parades it before all the children and lets the whole world know that her Dad bought it. The word ‘Thank you’ may or may not have been uttered by the child; but all those who see the child can easily understand that she is filled with gratitude for her Dad. I am sure all of us can relive some of those very precious moments in our families and among friends when gratitude was shown more eloquently through teary eyes, a squeeze of hands, a warm hug etc.
The author of Psalm 23 enumerates all that the Shepherd has done in his life and it is easy to read the word THANK YOU, LORD between each line of this Psalm. This sense of gratitude expressed by the psalmist reaches its peak in this line: “My cup overflows.”

The Third Aspect: Gratitude is rooted in the sense that life is a gift. The essence of the gift is that it comes to you from someone else, not by your own efforts. (Harold Kushner) The centre or source of gratitude is not oneself but the other or The Other (God). For all the good things we come across in our lives we spontaneously say, ‘Thank you’ or ‘Thank God’. In English there is no such expression as ‘Thank me’. Even when we achieve success through our efforts, we still tend to say ‘Thank God’. When we are saved from danger, even if this saving required some of our skills, we still say ‘Thank God’ or we think of someone else who has helped us through the danger… This is the beauty of gratitude… that it does not find the source or reason in oneself.

The Fourth Aspect: The remarkable thing about gratitude is that, like forgiveness, it is a favor we do ourselves more than it is something we do for the recipient of our thanks. God would have us develop the habit of gratitude for all the blessings of our lives, not because He needs our thanks but because when we acknowledge those blessings we come to feel differently about His world and live happier lives as a result. (Harold Kushner)

We come to feel differently about His world and live happier lives as a result… These words of Kushner almost read like a fairy tale… ‘They-lived-ever-after-happily’ stuff. We do not easily believe when someone says that this world would be different and our lives would be better. Why? It may be due some ideas of the world that are etched in our minds. It would be good to check how we feel about this world right now. Only then can we understand how differently we can feel about His world. How do we feel about the world now?

Having taught communication and the media for a few years, I can safely say that most of us form an idea of the world from what we read, hear and see in the media. The media claims that it just reflects the world around us. Without going into too many details about how the media works, I can say that that claim of the media is false! The media does not reflect reality; but constructs reality. Unfortunately, the world constructed by the media is only a partial, warped reality of the world. This is only 10% of the total reality. The other 90% of the world is good. Since only the darker side of the world is ‘news-worthy’, the media tends to project this 10% world day after day. When we keep hearing only such news, we tend to form a pessimistic view of the world. Hence, when someone says that this world can be different, we tend to brush aside such notions as fairy-tale stuff.

Here is a suggestion: Let us assume that most of us spend at least one hour per day with the media – reading newspapers, listening to the radio or watching TV. This means that we expose our minds to be influenced by the darker 10% world as painted by the media FOR ONE HOUR. If this is so, why not spend at least TWO HOURS per day consciously thinking about and thanking God for the 90% world that goes unnoticed by the media? 90% of the world that is GOOD? Many of you who read these lines would have already formed your own opinion on this suggestion. One of those opinions may be something like this… What a waste of time to spend TWO HOURS per day thinking about the good world!

Recently, one of my friends had sent this story via email to me:
A wise man once sat in a group and cracked a joke. All laughed like crazy. After a moment he cracked the same joke again and a little less people laughed this time. He cracked the same joke again and again. When there was no laughter in the crowd, he smiled and said: "When u can't laugh on the same joke again and again, then why do u keep crying over the same thing over and over again?”

I am asking myself a similar question. When I can form a darker opinion about the world because of the 10% world presented by the media, why can’t I form a brighter opinion of the world because of the real 90% world? This means I need to repeatedly tell myself that this world is good. Humans are slaves to habits. Why can’t I break the habit of thinking negatively about the world and form the habit of developing positive ideas of this world? I need to see the half-empty cup as half-filled cup. This shift comes by practice, by habit. In fact, such a habit would eventually lead me to believe that ‘my cup overflows.’

Thank ME என்று சொல்வதில்லை.
