The power of Jesus’ teaching comes from his parables and imageries. Due to this, his message has withstood the test of times and still makes a lot of sense. The layers of meaning one can find in his parables and imageries seem unending. Matthew has collated most of the teachings of Jesus in one section (Chapters 5 to 7) as the Sermon on the Mount. We began this section last Sunday with the famous ‘Beatitudes’. The Sermon continues today as well as the following four Sundays. In today’s gospel passage Jesus uses the famous imageries of Salt and Light. Both have become universal imageries. Matthew 5: 13-16
Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
A deeper analysis of just two of these sentences would be enough for this Sunday’s reflections. “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world…” Jesus did not say that we must be or need to be the salt or the light of the earth. Nor did he say we shall be the salt or the light. He simply said that WE ARE the salt and the light. This is not a condition or a future prediction. This is simply the present reality. You and I, dear friends, are already the salt of the earth and the light of the world. To be salt and light is the defining qualities of every disciple of Christ… of every Christian. Hence, it would be helpful to understand what is meant by ‘being salt’ and ‘being light’.
Salt is an essential ingredient of food; but, it cannot become one’s food. It needs to be added in small quantities to food to provide the necessary taste. Just because salt is an essential part of food, it cannot be added more than necessary. An overdose of salt makes the food unpalatable and it becomes fit only for the garbage. Salt also preserves food and has some healing qualities, as in the case of sore throat.
Similarly, a true disciple is an essential part of this world. He or she cannot stand aloof from the world but needs to mingle with this world in a proportionate way. When this proportion is lost, then the world becomes fit for the garbage along with the disciple. When the disciple is present in the world in the proper way, the world can be preserved and, if needed, healed.
The moment Jesus talks of us as salt of the earth, he comes up with a warning. What if we lose our saltiness?... There are quite a few explanations, some very scientific, to demonstrate how salt can lose its taste. Salt diluted beyond the limit, over exposed to elements of nature or exposed to other forces like electricity… can be some of the reasons given for salt to lose its taste. Once again, the parallel between salt and a disciple is clear.
The salt that has lost its taste, ‘is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.’ The image of salt getting trampled underfoot brought to my mind some sections of humanity who, like salt, serve as the essential part of the world and still get trampled by society all the time. I am thinking of those labourers involved in cleaning our roads, toilets etc. I am thinking of the agricultural labourers who toil hard to put food on our tables. If these labourers stop working just for a day, it would almost choke life out of the world. These very same labourers who are life-line of the world are denied their life-line and the necessary respect they fully deserve! The are trampled underfoot!
You are the light of the world… is another sentence replete with meaning. Once again, we need to look at the main traits of light. The moment we think of the word ‘light’, the word ‘darkness’ comes to mind. Even if the darkness is overpowering, a tiny lamp is enough to drive away darkness. A lamp does not draw attention to itself, but brings to light all things and persons around it. A lamp – whether it is a candle, an oil lamp, or an electric lamp – is able to spread light only when it burns its energy. All these and other characteristics of ‘light’ can be applied to a true disciple.
How to become a light to the world is eloquently answered in today’s first reading from Isaiah:
Isaiah 58:6-10
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter - when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
“If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.”

கதை, கவிதை உருவகங்களில் பேசுவது ஒரு தனி கலை. இக்கலையில் தேர்ந்தவர்களில் பலர், வார்த்தை விளையாட்டுக்களில் மூழ்கி, வாழ்க்கைக்குப் பயனுள்ள எதையும் சொல்லாமல் போகும் வாய்ப்பு உண்டு. இயேசு உருவகங்களில், உவமைகளில் பேசினார். வாழ்க்கைக்குப் பயனுள்ளவைகளையே பேசினார். அவர் பயன்படுத்திய உருவகங்கள் தினசரி வாழ்விலிருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்டவை. எந்தவித அடுக்கு மொழியோ, அலங்காரமோ இல்லாமல் அவர் சொன்ன உவமைகள், உருவகங்கள் மக்களின் மனங்களில் ஆழமாய், பாடங்களாய் பதிந்தன.
இயேசுவின் படிப்பினைகளில் பலவற்றைத் தொகுத்து, மத்தேயு தனது நற்செய்தியில் 5 முதல் 7 வரை மூன்று பிரிவுகளில் மலைப்போழிவாகத் தந்துள்ளார். இந்த மலைப்பொழிவின் ஆரம்பமான 'பேறுபெற்றோர்' பகுதியை சென்ற வாரம் ஞாயிறு நற்செய்தியாகக் கேட்டோம். இந்த ஞாயிறும், இனி தொடரும் நான்கு ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமைகளும் இந்த மலைப்பொழிவின் வெவ்வேறு பகுதிகளைக் கேட்கவிருக்கிறோம்.
இன்று நமக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள நற்செய்திப் பகுதியில் இயேசு இரு உருவகங்களைக் கூறியுள்ளார். "நீங்கள் மண்ணுலகிற்கு உப்பாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள்... நீங்கள் உலகிற்கு ஒளியாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள்." என்று இயேசு தன சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியுள்ளார். உப்பும் விளக்கும் இல்லாத வீடுகள் இல்லை. ஏழை பணக்காரன், அரசன் ஆண்டி என்ற பாகுபாடுகள் ஏதும் இன்றி, எல்லா வீடுகளிலும் பயன்படுவது உப்பும், விளக்கும். இயேசு கூறிய இவ்விரு கூற்றுக்களையும் இன்று ஆழமாய் அலசுவது நமக்கு நன்மை தரும்.
“நீங்கள் மண்ணுலகிற்கு உப்பாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள்.” என்ற இந்தக் கூற்றின் ஆழத்தை உணர, இந்த வரியை இரு நிலைகளில் சிந்திக்கலாம். உப்பாக இருப்பது என்றால் என்ன? உலகிற்கு உப்பாக இருப்பது என்றால் என்ன?
• உப்பாக இருப்பது என்றால், நடுநாயகமாக இல்லாமல், ஒரு பகுதியாக இருப்பது. உணவுக்குச் சுவையூட்டும் ஒரு பகுதி உப்பு. அது இல்லையேல், உணவுக்குச் சுவையே இருக்காது. அனால், உப்பே உணவாக முடியாது. அப்படி யாராவது உப்பை உணவாகக் கொண்டால், அவர் தாகத்தால் தவிக்க வேண்டியிருக்கும்.
• உணவுக்குச் சுவை சேர்க்கும் உப்பு, ஓர் அளவுடன் இருக்க வேண்டும். தானே மிகவும் முக்கியம் என்று எண்ணி, உப்பு தன் அளவைக் கடந்து உணவுடன் சேர்ந்தால், அந்த உணவு குப்பைக்குத்தான் போக வேண்டும். உப்பில்லா உணவு குப்பையிலே. உப்பு அதிகமான உணவும் குப்பையிலே.
• உணவு கெட்டுப்போகாமல் இருப்பதற்கும் உப்பு பயன்படும். அதேவேளையில், கெட்டுப் போய்விட்ட உணவை மீண்டும் நல்லதாக்க உப்பால் முடியாது.
• உப்பு சில நேரங்களில் மருந்தாகவும் பயன்படும். தொண்டை வலி ஏற்படும்போது, உப்பு நீர் அதிகம் உதவும். உடல் வீக்கம் குறைய, உப்பால் ஒத்தடம் கொடுப்பார்கள். சிலர் காயங்கள் மீதும் உப்பைப் பயன்படுத்துவார்கள்.
உப்பாக இருப்பதன் பொருள் இவை என்றால், உலகத்தின் உப்பாக இருப்பதைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்கலாம். இயேசுவின் சீடர்கள் உலகின் உப்பாக இருக்கின்றனர் என்றால், அதன் பொருள் என்ன?
• அவர்கள் உலகின் ஒரு பகுதியாய், ஒரு முக்கியப் பகுதியாய் கலந்து, கரைந்து வாழ்கிறார்கள். தாங்களே உலகின் மையம், நடுநாயகம் என்று வாழவதில்லை.
• உணவில் அளவோடு கரையும் உப்பைப்போல், அவர்களும் உலகில் அளவோடு கரைந்து வாழ்கின்றனர். அளவுக்கதிகமாய் உலகோடு கரைந்தால், உலகம் அவர்களால் பயன்பெறப் போவதில்லை.
• உலகிற்கு மருந்தாகவும், உலகை அழிவிலிருந்து காக்கவும் இவர்கள் கருவிகளாக இருக்கின்றனர்.
"நீங்கள் மண்ணுலகிற்கு உப்பாக இருக்கிறீர்கள்." என்று இயேசு கூறும்போது இவ்வெண்ணங்களை நம் உள்ளத்தில் அவர் பதிக்கிறார்.
இவ்வார்த்தைகளைச் சொன்னதும், இயேசு ஓர் எச்சரிக்கையையும் தருகிறார். உணவுக்குச் சுவை சேர்க்கும் உப்பே சுவையிழந்து போனால் பயனில்லை என்று இயேசு எச்சரிக்கிறார். உப்பு எவ்விதம் தன் சுவையை இழக்கும்? அது உப்புப் படிகங்களாய் இருக்கும் வரை அதன் சுவையைக் குறைப்பதோ, அழிப்பதோ இயலாது. ஆனால், உப்புடன் பிற மாசுப் பொருட்கள் கலந்தால், உப்பு சூரியன் அல்லது அதிக வெப்பத்தால் தாக்கப்பட்டால் அதன் சுவையை இழந்துவிடும். அறிவியல் வளர்ந்துள்ள இக்காலத்தில், உப்பை நீரில் கரைத்து, அதனுள் மின்சக்தியைச் செலுத்தினால் மாற்றங்கள் உருவாகும். உலகின் உப்பாக இருக்கும் இயேசுவின் சீடர்களும் தங்கள் நிலைப்பாட்டிலிருந்து, கொள்கைப்பிடிப்பிலிருந்து விலகி, தளர்ந்து, உலகச் சக்திகளால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டால், தாக்கப்பட்டால், மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்பட வாய்ப்புண்டு. பயனற்ற உப்பாக மாற வாய்ப்புண்டு.
சுவையிழந்த, பயனற்ற உப்பு வெளியில் கொட்டப்படும், மனிதரால் மிதிபடும். மிதிபடும் உப்பைப் பற்றிச் சிந்திக்கும் பொது, என் மனதில் வேறொரு எண்ணமும் எழுகிறது. உணவுக்கு உயிரோட்டமாய் இருக்கும் உப்பு தன்னை முற்றிலும் மறைத்து, கரைத்து உணவுக்குச் சுவை சேர்க்கிறது. அதேபோல், உலகில் எத்தனையோ மக்கள் இந்த உலகின் உயிர் நாடிகளாய் இருக்கின்றனர். இவர்கள் இல்லையேல் உலகம் இயங்காது என்பது உண்மை. ஆனால், இவர்கள் ஒருபோதும் உலகின் நடுநாயகமாய் வைக்கப்படுவதில்லை. உலகெங்கும் துப்புரவுத் தொழிலில் ஈடுப்பட்டுள்ள கோடி, கோடி மக்களை இந்நேரத்தில் நாம் எண்ணிப் பார்க்க வேண்டும். யாருடைய கவனத்தையும், எந்த ஒரு விளம்பரத்தையும் தேடாமல் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் பணி செய்யும் இவர்கள் ஒரு நாள் மட்டும் தங்கள் பணிகளை நிறுத்திவிட்டால், உலகின் நிலை எப்படி இருக்கும் என்பது நமக்குத் தெரிந்ததுதானே! உலகின் உப்பாக இருக்கும் துப்புரவுத் தொழிலாளர்கள், ஏர் பிடித்து உழும் விவசாயிகள், என்று பல கோடி தொழிலாளர்களை இந்நேரத்தில் நினைத்து பார்ப்போம். மண்ணில் மிதிபடும் உப்பைப் போல் வாழ்நாளெல்லாம் மிதிபடும் இவர்களுக்கு உரிய மரியாதை, மதிப்பு இவைகளை வழங்கும் மனம் நமக்கு வேண்டும்; உலகமும் இவர்களுக்கு உரிய மதிப்பை வழங்க வேண்டும் என்று செபிப்போம்.

உலகிற்கு ஒளியாக இருப்பவர்களும் தங்களையே அழித்துக் கொள்ள முன்வர வேண்டும். தங்களையே விளம்பரப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளாமல், தங்களைச்சுற்றி இருப்பவர்களை வெளிச்சத்திற்குக் கொண்டுவர வேண்டும்.
மரக்காலுக்குள் வைக்காமல், விளக்குத் தண்டின்மீது வைக்கப்படும் விளக்கே வீட்டை ஒளிமயமாக்கும். அதேபோல், உலகிற்கு ஒளியாக இருக்கும் நாமும் நம் திறமைகளை உலகறியச் செய்யவேண்டும். இப்படிச் செய்வது நம் திறமைகளுக்கு நாம் தரும் விளம்பரம் அல்ல, மாறாக, நமது திறமைகள் மூலம் பிறர் வாழ்வில் ஒளி சேர்ப்பதே நம் எண்ணம்.

நாம் எப்போது ஒளியாக வாழமுடியும் என்பதை இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் இறைவனின் கூற்றாகவே இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா கூறியுள்ளார். அவரது வார்த்தைகளுடன் நமது சிந்தனைகளை நிறைவு செய்வோம்.

கதை, கவிதை உருவகங்களில் பேசுவது ஒரு தனி கலை. இக்கலையில் தேர்ந்தவர்களில் பலர், வார்த்தை விளையாட்டுக்களில் மூழ்கி, வாழ்க்கைக்குப் பயனுள்ள எதையும் சொல்லாமல் போகும் வாய்ப்பு உண்டு. இயேசு உருவகங்களில், உவமைகளில் பேசினார். வாழ்க்கைக்குப் பயனுள்ளவைகளையே பேசினார். அவர் பயன்படுத்திய உருவகங்கள் தினசரி வாழ்விலிருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்டவை. எந்தவித அடுக்கு மொழியோ, அலங்காரமோ இல்லாமல் அவர் சொன்ன உவமைகள், உருவகங்கள் மக்களின் மனங்களில் ஆழமாய், பாடங்களாய் பதிந்தன.
இயேசுவின் படிப்பினைகளில் பலவற்றைத் தொகுத்து, மத்தேயு தனது நற்செய்தியில் 5 முதல் 7 வரை மூன்று பிரிவுகளில் மலைப்போழிவாகத் தந்துள்ளார். இந்த மலைப்பொழிவின் ஆரம்பமான 'பேறுபெற்றோர்' பகுதியை சென்ற வாரம் ஞாயிறு நற்செய்தியாகக் கேட்டோம். இந்த ஞாயிறும், இனி தொடரும் நான்கு ஞாயிற்றுக் கிழமைகளும் இந்த மலைப்பொழிவின் வெவ்வேறு பகுதிகளைக் கேட்கவிருக்கிறோம்.
இன்று நமக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள நற்செய்திப் பகுதியில் இயேசு இரு உருவகங்களைக் கூறியுள்ளார். "நீங்கள் மண்ணுலகிற்கு உப்பாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள்... நீங்கள் உலகிற்கு ஒளியாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள்." என்று இயேசு தன சீடரை நோக்கிக் கூறியுள்ளார். உப்பும் விளக்கும் இல்லாத வீடுகள் இல்லை. ஏழை பணக்காரன், அரசன் ஆண்டி என்ற பாகுபாடுகள் ஏதும் இன்றி, எல்லா வீடுகளிலும் பயன்படுவது உப்பும், விளக்கும். இயேசு கூறிய இவ்விரு கூற்றுக்களையும் இன்று ஆழமாய் அலசுவது நமக்கு நன்மை தரும்.
“நீங்கள் மண்ணுலகிற்கு உப்பாய் இருக்கிறீர்கள்.” என்ற இந்தக் கூற்றின் ஆழத்தை உணர, இந்த வரியை இரு நிலைகளில் சிந்திக்கலாம். உப்பாக இருப்பது என்றால் என்ன? உலகிற்கு உப்பாக இருப்பது என்றால் என்ன?
• உப்பாக இருப்பது என்றால், நடுநாயகமாக இல்லாமல், ஒரு பகுதியாக இருப்பது. உணவுக்குச் சுவையூட்டும் ஒரு பகுதி உப்பு. அது இல்லையேல், உணவுக்குச் சுவையே இருக்காது. அனால், உப்பே உணவாக முடியாது. அப்படி யாராவது உப்பை உணவாகக் கொண்டால், அவர் தாகத்தால் தவிக்க வேண்டியிருக்கும்.
• உணவுக்குச் சுவை சேர்க்கும் உப்பு, ஓர் அளவுடன் இருக்க வேண்டும். தானே மிகவும் முக்கியம் என்று எண்ணி, உப்பு தன் அளவைக் கடந்து உணவுடன் சேர்ந்தால், அந்த உணவு குப்பைக்குத்தான் போக வேண்டும். உப்பில்லா உணவு குப்பையிலே. உப்பு அதிகமான உணவும் குப்பையிலே.
• உணவு கெட்டுப்போகாமல் இருப்பதற்கும் உப்பு பயன்படும். அதேவேளையில், கெட்டுப் போய்விட்ட உணவை மீண்டும் நல்லதாக்க உப்பால் முடியாது.
• உப்பு சில நேரங்களில் மருந்தாகவும் பயன்படும். தொண்டை வலி ஏற்படும்போது, உப்பு நீர் அதிகம் உதவும். உடல் வீக்கம் குறைய, உப்பால் ஒத்தடம் கொடுப்பார்கள். சிலர் காயங்கள் மீதும் உப்பைப் பயன்படுத்துவார்கள்.
உப்பாக இருப்பதன் பொருள் இவை என்றால், உலகத்தின் உப்பாக இருப்பதைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்கலாம். இயேசுவின் சீடர்கள் உலகின் உப்பாக இருக்கின்றனர் என்றால், அதன் பொருள் என்ன?
• அவர்கள் உலகின் ஒரு பகுதியாய், ஒரு முக்கியப் பகுதியாய் கலந்து, கரைந்து வாழ்கிறார்கள். தாங்களே உலகின் மையம், நடுநாயகம் என்று வாழவதில்லை.
• உணவில் அளவோடு கரையும் உப்பைப்போல், அவர்களும் உலகில் அளவோடு கரைந்து வாழ்கின்றனர். அளவுக்கதிகமாய் உலகோடு கரைந்தால், உலகம் அவர்களால் பயன்பெறப் போவதில்லை.
• உலகிற்கு மருந்தாகவும், உலகை அழிவிலிருந்து காக்கவும் இவர்கள் கருவிகளாக இருக்கின்றனர்.
"நீங்கள் மண்ணுலகிற்கு உப்பாக இருக்கிறீர்கள்." என்று இயேசு கூறும்போது இவ்வெண்ணங்களை நம் உள்ளத்தில் அவர் பதிக்கிறார்.
இவ்வார்த்தைகளைச் சொன்னதும், இயேசு ஓர் எச்சரிக்கையையும் தருகிறார். உணவுக்குச் சுவை சேர்க்கும் உப்பே சுவையிழந்து போனால் பயனில்லை என்று இயேசு எச்சரிக்கிறார். உப்பு எவ்விதம் தன் சுவையை இழக்கும்? அது உப்புப் படிகங்களாய் இருக்கும் வரை அதன் சுவையைக் குறைப்பதோ, அழிப்பதோ இயலாது. ஆனால், உப்புடன் பிற மாசுப் பொருட்கள் கலந்தால், உப்பு சூரியன் அல்லது அதிக வெப்பத்தால் தாக்கப்பட்டால் அதன் சுவையை இழந்துவிடும். அறிவியல் வளர்ந்துள்ள இக்காலத்தில், உப்பை நீரில் கரைத்து, அதனுள் மின்சக்தியைச் செலுத்தினால் மாற்றங்கள் உருவாகும். உலகின் உப்பாக இருக்கும் இயேசுவின் சீடர்களும் தங்கள் நிலைப்பாட்டிலிருந்து, கொள்கைப்பிடிப்பிலிருந்து விலகி, தளர்ந்து, உலகச் சக்திகளால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டால், தாக்கப்பட்டால், மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்பட வாய்ப்புண்டு. பயனற்ற உப்பாக மாற வாய்ப்புண்டு.
சுவையிழந்த, பயனற்ற உப்பு வெளியில் கொட்டப்படும், மனிதரால் மிதிபடும். மிதிபடும் உப்பைப் பற்றிச் சிந்திக்கும் பொது, என் மனதில் வேறொரு எண்ணமும் எழுகிறது. உணவுக்கு உயிரோட்டமாய் இருக்கும் உப்பு தன்னை முற்றிலும் மறைத்து, கரைத்து உணவுக்குச் சுவை சேர்க்கிறது. அதேபோல், உலகில் எத்தனையோ மக்கள் இந்த உலகின் உயிர் நாடிகளாய் இருக்கின்றனர். இவர்கள் இல்லையேல் உலகம் இயங்காது என்பது உண்மை. ஆனால், இவர்கள் ஒருபோதும் உலகின் நடுநாயகமாய் வைக்கப்படுவதில்லை. உலகெங்கும் துப்புரவுத் தொழிலில் ஈடுப்பட்டுள்ள கோடி, கோடி மக்களை இந்நேரத்தில் நாம் எண்ணிப் பார்க்க வேண்டும். யாருடைய கவனத்தையும், எந்த ஒரு விளம்பரத்தையும் தேடாமல் ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் பணி செய்யும் இவர்கள் ஒரு நாள் மட்டும் தங்கள் பணிகளை நிறுத்திவிட்டால், உலகின் நிலை எப்படி இருக்கும் என்பது நமக்குத் தெரிந்ததுதானே! உலகின் உப்பாக இருக்கும் துப்புரவுத் தொழிலாளர்கள், ஏர் பிடித்து உழும் விவசாயிகள், என்று பல கோடி தொழிலாளர்களை இந்நேரத்தில் நினைத்து பார்ப்போம். மண்ணில் மிதிபடும் உப்பைப் போல் வாழ்நாளெல்லாம் மிதிபடும் இவர்களுக்கு உரிய மரியாதை, மதிப்பு இவைகளை வழங்கும் மனம் நமக்கு வேண்டும்; உலகமும் இவர்களுக்கு உரிய மதிப்பை வழங்க வேண்டும் என்று செபிப்போம்.
"நீங்கள் உலகிற்கு ஒளியாக இருக்கிறீர்கள்." என்பது இயேசுவின் அடுத்த உருவகம். ‘ஒளி’ என்ற சொல்லைக் கேட்டதும், ‘இருள்’ என்ற சொல் தானாகவே நம் எண்ணத்தில் தோன்றும். இருள், இரவு இவை இருக்கும்போதுதானே ஒளியைப் பற்றி, விளக்கைப் பற்றி நாம் எண்ணிப் பார்ப்போம். நடுப்பகலில் விளக்கை பற்றி நாம் சிந்திப்பது இல்லை.
இரவில் ஏற்றப்படும் விளக்கு, உணவில் கலக்கப்படும் உப்பைப் போலவே, தன்னையே விளம்பரப்படுத்துவதில்லை. விளக்கின் ஒளியில் மற்ற பொருட்களே வெளிச்சத்திற்குக் கொண்டு வரப்படும்.
மெழுகுதிரியோ, அகல் விளக்கோ, மின்சார விளக்கோ, எந்த வடிவத்தில் விளக்கு இருந்தாலும், அது தன்னையே அழித்துக் கொள்ளும்போதுதான் வெளிச்சம் தர முடியும். தன்னைக் கரைக்க மறுக்கும் உப்பு சுவை தர முடியாததுபோல், தன்னை அழிக்க, இழக்க மறுக்கும் விளக்கு ஒளி தர முடியாது.
உலகிற்கு ஒளியாக இருப்பவர்களும் தங்களையே அழித்துக் கொள்ள முன்வர வேண்டும். தங்களையே விளம்பரப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளாமல், தங்களைச்சுற்றி இருப்பவர்களை வெளிச்சத்திற்குக் கொண்டுவர வேண்டும்.
மரக்காலுக்குள் வைக்காமல், விளக்குத் தண்டின்மீது வைக்கப்படும் விளக்கே வீட்டை ஒளிமயமாக்கும். அதேபோல், உலகிற்கு ஒளியாக இருக்கும் நாமும் நம் திறமைகளை உலகறியச் செய்யவேண்டும். இப்படிச் செய்வது நம் திறமைகளுக்கு நாம் தரும் விளம்பரம் அல்ல, மாறாக, நமது திறமைகள் மூலம் பிறர் வாழ்வில் ஒளி சேர்ப்பதே நம் எண்ணம்.
நீங்கள் உப்பாக, ஒளியாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்றோ, உப்பாக, ஒளியாக மாறுங்கள் என்றோ இயேசு கூறவில்லை. "நீங்கள் உப்பாக, ஒளியாக இருக்கிறீர்கள்" என்று நமக்கு நமது பணியை நினைவுபடுத்துகிறார். உலகின் உப்பு, ஒளி நாம் என்று மலைமீது நின்று உலகெல்லாம் கேட்கும்படி நம்மைப் பற்றி இயேசு பெருமையுடன் பறை சாற்றியுள்ளார். நம்மீது இயேசு கொண்டிருக்கும் இந்த பெரும் எண்ணங்களுக்கு ஏற்ப உப்பாக, ஒளியாக வாழ்வோம்.
நாம் எப்போது ஒளியாக வாழமுடியும் என்பதை இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் இறைவனின் கூற்றாகவே இறைவாக்கினர் எசாயா கூறியுள்ளார். அவரது வார்த்தைகளுடன் நமது சிந்தனைகளை நிறைவு செய்வோம்.
எசாயா 58: 6-10
கொடுமைத் தளைகளை அவிழ்ப்பதும், நுகத்தின் பிணையல்களை அறுப்பதும் ஒடுக்கப்பட்டோரை விடுதலை செய்து அனுப்புவதும், எவ்வகை நுகத்தையும் உடைப்பதும் அன்றோ நான் தேர்ந்துகொள்ளும் நோன்பு! பசித்தோர்க்கு உங்கள் உணவைப் பகிர்ந்து கொடுப்பதும் தங்க இடமில்லா வறியோரை உங்கள் இல்லத்திற்கு அழைத்து வருவதும், உடையற்றோரைக் காணும்போது அவர்களுக்கு உடுக்கக் கொடுப்பதும் உங்கள் இனத்தாருக்கு உங்களை மறைத்துக் கொள்ளாதிருப்பதும் அன்றோ நான் விரும்பும் நோன்பு! அப்பொழுது உன் ஒளி விடியல் போல் எழும்: விரைவில் உனக்கு நலமான வாழ்வு துளிர்க்கும்: உன் நேர்மை உனக்கு முன் செல்லும்: ஆண்டவரின் மாட்சி உனக்குப் பின்சென்று காக்கும். அப்போது நீ ஆண்டவரை மன்றாடுவாய்: அவர் உனக்குப் பதிலளிப்பார்: நீ கூக்குரல் இடுவாய்: அவர் இதோ! நான் என மறுமொழி தருவார். உன்னிடையே இருக்கும் நுகத்தை அகற்றிவிட்டு, சுட்டிக்காட்டிக் குற்றஞ்சாட்டுவதையும் பொல்லாதன பேசுவதையும் நிறுத்திவிட்டு, பசித்திருப்போருக்காக உன்னையே கையளித்து, வறியோரின் தேவையை நிறைவு செய்வாயானால், இருள் நடுவே உன் ஒளி உதிக்கும்: இருண்ட உன் நிலை நண்பகல் போல் ஆகும்.
