And Thomas
Let me
begin today’s reflections with an anecdote shared by Deacon Greg Kandra, a
Roman Catholic deacon serving the Diocese of Brooklyn, New York, in his blog
‘The Deacon’s Bench’:
Every
year on the Sunday after Easter, the greatest celebration of faith, we
encounter the gospel’s most famous story of doubt: the story of Thomas, who demands proof before
he will believe.
We live
in an age when we are surrounded by Thomases – not only doubters, but
disbelievers. Atheists, agnostics, secularists, whatever you want to call them…
More and more, atheists are seeking to challenge believers, and are making
their voices heard in the public square.
One that
I read recently was about a man named Patrick Greene. Greene was an avowed
atheist from Henderson County, Texas, and he complained, often bitterly, about
the hostility he experienced from his neighbors who were Christian.
Last
year (2011), he gained some notoriety when he joined the fight against a
Nativity scene that had been set up outside the courthouse in the town of Athens , Texas
Shortly
after making the threat, however, he learned that his eyesight was
deteriorating. Doctors found that he suffered from a variety of serious
problems, including cataracts, glaucoma and a detached retina. Greene made his
living as a cab driver, and soon had to give up his job. His legal battle began
to sap his time and money. Finally, he
decided that he couldn’t go forward with the lawsuit if he was blind, so he
withdrew his threats and waited for the darkness to descend.

They did
something remarkable. A Baptist church started a fund drive, raising money so
that one of the most notorious atheists in town could have an operation and,
maybe, recover his sight. But Greene refused the money, saying the surgery wasn’t
guaranteed to succeed. Undeterred, the church asked him if there was anything
else they could do. Greene said that, since he could no longer drive a taxi, he
could use help with his household expenses. He expected he might get a couple of
checks for ten or twenty bucks. A few days later, he got the first check: $400.
As time
went on, the checks and the support and prayers continued. Patrick Greene was
overwhelmed. To his amazement, he found that his faith in his own disbelief was
being shaken.
Just
before Easter, he gave an interview to the Christian Post. Greene said the
outpouring of love had changed him. “I realized,” he explained, “that the
questions I was asking you just had to be accepted on faith without doubting
every period and every comma.” He’s now joined a local church. Greene recently
said he’s thinking of studying to become a minister.
What
attracted my attention to this episode was the fact that Patrick Greene was
able to ‘see better’ once he began to lose his physical ability to see. Seeing
with the heart is a greater blessing and Jesus called them ‘blessed’ – adding
to his list of beatitudes! Jesus pronounced this beatitude in the upper room,
among his scared disciples. This was part of a special invitation Jesus
extended to Thomas. Jesus said: "Because you have seen me, you have
believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
(John 20: 29)
Any Tom,
Dick and Harry, the moment he/she begins to doubt, becomes only a Tom. Doubting
Tom. Unfortunately, Tom seems to hold a monopoly over one of the most common
human experiences called doubting. Kindly spare a thought for Tom, I mean St Thomas
It is
significant that after the Solemn Feast of the Resurrection, the very core of
our Christian Faith, we are given the opportunity to think of one of the close
disciples doubting the Risen Christ. This Sunday – the Second Sunday of Easter
– is also called the Divine Mercy Sunday, instituted by Blessed John Paul II in
the year 2000. Only in the context of mercy and love, truth can shed light on
those living in the darkness of doubts, as it did in the cases of St Thomas
Some of us
may have already taken the judgement seat trying to pronounce our judgement on
Thomas: “What a pity! After having lived with Jesus so closely for three years,
this guy still doubted Jesus!” Well, after having listened to hundreds of
treatises on Resurrection, I still have my moments of hesitation. How can I
judge Thomas, who came from the Jewish background where the idea of
Resurrection was not that strong? Also, who am I to throw a stone at Thomas
when my own cupboard is filled with skeletons of doubts and uncertainties? If I
were present in Jerusalem on the last few days
of Jesus’ life, I would have had more doubts than Thomas, especially after
having seen those last few hours on Calvary .
So, I dare not take the judgement seat. Let me see whether I can stand along
with the ‘accused’ Thomas and the other disciples and try to understand their
doubts.
The
disciples left their trade, their parents, their everything... to follow Jesus.
In those three years, Jesus became everything to them. He was their world. This
world was brutally uprooted and nailed to the cross. The vacuum created by the
absence of Jesus was filled by doubts and fear. Their doubts were very real.
One of them betrayed the Master and another denied ever knowing him. They could
no longer believe in one another, neither could they believe in themselves. The
way most of them ran away from the scene of the arrest of Jesus was still very
raw. Probably most of them did not even attend the funeral of Jesus, since they
were already buried in their own fears and worries. They decided to lock
themselves up and wait for the inevitable… the certainty of their own execution
by the Romans. They had already built their tomb in the upper room.
Jesus did
not want his loved ones see decay. He wanted to open their graves and bring
them alive. Hence, He entered their ‘tomb’ and stood among them. How did He
come in? All the doors were locked… then, how could He? That was and, still, is
the beauty of Jesus. The God of surprises! From his birth, He had surprised the
Jewish world. It was the trademark of Jesus to defy expectations. He had done
it once again.
When we are
in doubt, what do we do? We usually dig our own graves; we bury ourselves in
self-pity. Love and mercy are required to lift us out of this grave. Jesus
tried to clear the doubts of Thomas not only by words but also by a solid
physical proof. If only we could learn to talk when clouds of doubt gather over
our relationships! If only we could step out of our graves in a gesture of
self-gift, there would be more open and empty graves!

The
Texas papers report that in gratitude, Patrick Greene bought a star to go atop
the tree that is part of the Athens, Texas Nativity display – the very display
he tried to outlaw (in 2011). Given his
condition, he can’t be certain he will ever actually see that star next
Christmas.
But I
think he would agree: he has seen something far more wondrous.
And he
has seen it with the eyes of faith.
Let us
pray to be open to God’s tender mercies — that we might say with the joy of
Easter discovery, and with the wonder of St.

வீட்டில் தங்க வேண்டியதாயிற்று. அவர் தொடுத்திருந்த வழக்கினால், அவரிடம் வங்கியிலிருந்த சேமிப்பும் கரையத் துவங்கியது.
எனவே, சில வாரங்களில் அவர் தன் வழக்கை 'வாபஸ்' பெற்றுக்கொண்டு

Patrick Greene தன் வாழ்வில்
இறைவனை உணர்ந்தது நமக்கெல்லாம் நல்லதொரு பாடம். இறைவனை நேரில் சந்திப்பதோ, இறை அனுபவத்தை நேரடியாகப் பெறுவதோ நடக்காத
காரியம் என்பதால், இறைவனை நம்ப மறுத்தவர் Patrick. இறை நம்பிக்கை கொண்டவர்களை ஏளனமாகக் கருதினார்;
வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தபோதெல்லாம் அவர்களுக்குத் தன் எதிர்ப்பைத் தெரிவிப்பதில்
பெருமை கொண்டார். அவரை இறைவன் சந்தித்தார். அவர் எதிர்பார்த்த நேரடி அனுபவத்தில் அவரைச்
சந்திக்கவில்லை, மறைமுகமாக, ஒரு கிறிஸ்தவ
சமுதாயத்தின் வழியாக இறைவன் அவரைச் சந்தித்தார்.
இறை நம்பிக்கையற்றவர் என்று
சொல்லிக் கொள்வதில் பெருமை அடைந்த Patrick,
கண் பார்வையை இழக்க ஆரம்பித்தபோது வேறு பல உண்மைகளைக் காண முடிந்தது.
உடலளவில் பார்வை இழந்து, உள்ளத்தில் பார்வை பெற்ற Patrick போன்றவர்களை மனதில் எண்ணி, இயேசு கூறும் அழகியச் சொற்களை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி இவ்விதம் சொல்கிறது: "காணாமலே
நம்புவோர் பேறுபெற்றோர்" (யோவான் 20: 29)
சந்தேகமும், இரக்கமும் சந்திக்கும் ஞாயிறு இது. உயிர்ப்புப்
பெருவிழாவுக்கு அடுத்த ஞாயிறை 'இறை இரக்கத்தின்' ஞாயிறு என்று கொண்டாடுகிறோம். இறை இரக்கம் அல்லது இறைவனின் பேரன்பு என்ற கதிரவன்
எழும்போது, சந்தேக மேகங்கள் கலைந்துவிடும் என்பதை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி
எடுத்துரைக்கிறது.
கிறிஸ்தவ மறையின் ஆணிவேர்
இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் உயிர்ப்பு. இந்த மறையுண்மை இல்லையெனில் கிறிஸ்தவ மறை அர்த்தமில்லாமல்
போய்விடும். நம்பிக்கை ஆண்டைக் கொண்டாடிவரும் இந்நேரத்தில், நம் விசுவாசத்தின் அடித்தளமான உயிர்த்த கிறிஸ்துவை
மீண்டும் ஒருமுறை இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று சந்திக்க வந்திருக்கிறோம்.
சென்ற வாரம், எரியும் மெழுகுதிரிகளை
ஏந்தி, பாஸ்காப் புகழுரையைப்
பாடி, இயேசுவின் உயிர்ப்பை அறிக்கையிட்டபோது நமக்குள் ஒரு நிறைவும்
மகிழ்வும் தோன்றியதை உணர்ந்தோம். உயிர்த்த இயேசு இன்று நமக்கு முன் தோன்றினால்,
உடனே அவர் திருவடி பணிந்து நம் விசுவாசத்தையும், நம்பிக்கையையும் வெளியிட எவ்விதத்
தயக்கமும் இருக்காது.
முதல் உயிர்ப்புத் திருவிழாவில்
இத்தகைய மகிழ்வு, நிறைவு,
உற்சாகம் இருந்ததாகத் தெரியவில்லை. அது ஒரு திருவிழாவாக இருந்ததா என்பதே
சந்தேகம்தான். சந்தேகம்... உயிர்த்த இயேசுவைச் சீடர்கள் சந்தித்த நிகழ்வுகள் அனைத்திலும்
அடிப்படையில் இழையோடிய ஓர் உணர்வு... சந்தேகம். இந்த நிகழ்வுகள் அனைத்தின் சிகரமாக
இன்று நாம் நற்செய்தியில் காண்பது, சந்தேகம் கொண்டிருந்த தோமாவை இயேசு சந்தித்த அழகான
நிகழ்ச்சி.
நம் வாழ்வை ஆட்டிப்படைக்கும்
உணர்வுகளிலேயே அதிக ஆபத்தானது எது தெரியுமா?
சந்தேகம். சந்தேகம் ஒரு கூட்டு உணர்வு; பல உணர்வுகளின்
பிறப்பிடம் அது. சந்தேகம் குடிகொள்ளும் மனதில் கூடவே பயம், கோபம்,
வருத்தம், நம்பிக்கையின்மை என்ற பல உணர்வுகள் கூட்டுக்
குடித்தனம் செய்யும்.
சந்தேகத்திற்கு ஓர் எடுத்துக்காட்டாக
விவிலியத்தில் கூறப்படும் ஒரு மனிதர் தோமா. உண்மை பேசுபவரை "அரிச்சந்திரன்"
என்றும், தாராள மனதுடையவரைப்
"பாரி வள்ளல்" என்றும் அழைக்கிறோமே, அதேபோல், சந்தேகப்படும்
யாரையும் “சந்தேகத் தோமையார்” என்று அழைக்கிறோம்.
அவ்வளவு தூரம் தோமா சந்தேகத்தின் மறுபிறவியாக மாறிவிட்டார்.
தோமா இயேசுவின்
உயிர்ப்பைச் சந்தேகப்பட்டார் என்று கேட்டதும் நம்மில் பலர், என்னையும் சேர்த்துதான் சொல்கிறேன்... உடனே
ஒரு நீதியிருக்கை மீது அமர்ந்து "என்ன மனிதர் இவர்? இயேசுவோடு
மூன்று ஆண்டுகள் நெருக்கமாய் பழகிவிட்டு, எப்படி இவரால் சந்தேகப்பட
முடிந்தது?" என்ற கேள்வியை கேட்டு, "தோமா இப்படி நடந்துகொண்டது
தவறு." என்ற தீர்ப்பையும் தந்து விடுகிறோம். நீதியிருக்கைகளில் ஏறுவது எளிது.
இயேசுவின் உயிர்ப்பைப்பற்றி
தலைமுறை, தலைமுறையாய் ஆயிரமாயிரம்
விளக்கங்களைக் கேட்டு வந்துள்ள கிறிஸ்தவ பாரம்பரியத்தில் இன்று வாழும் நமக்கே அந்த
உயிர்ப்பு குறித்த விசுவாசத்தில் அவ்வப்போது தடுமாற்றம் ஏற்படுகிறது. அப்படியிருக்க,
உயிர்ப்பு பற்றிய எண்ணங்களில் தெளிவில்லாத யூத சமுதாயத்தில் 2000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு
முன் பிறந்து வளர்ந்த சீடர்களில் ஒருவர் இயேசுவின் உயிர்ப்பைச் சந்தேகித்தார் என்பதற்காக
அவரைக் கண்டனம் செய்வது தவறு. தீர்ப்பிடுவது தவறு.
கல்வாரியில் இயேசு இறந்ததை
நீங்களோ, நானோ நேரடியாகப் பார்த்திருந்தால்,
ஒரு வேளை தோமாவை விட இன்னும் அதிகமாய் மனம் உடைந்து போயிருப்போம். அந்த
கல்வாரி பயங்கரத்திற்குப் பின் ஒன்றுமே இல்லை என்ற முடிவுக்கும் வந்திருப்போம். ஆகவே,
தீர்ப்புகளை வழங்க நாம் அமர்ந்திருக்கும் நீதி இருக்கைகளிலிருந்து முதலில்
எழுந்து வருவோம். குற்றவாளிக் கூண்டில் நாம் நிறுத்தியுள்ள தோமாவின் நிலையில் நம்மை
நிறுத்தி, இந்த நிகழ்வைச் சிந்திப்போம்.
உயிர்த்த இயேசுவைக் கண்டதும்
அனைத்துச் சீடர்களுக்கும் கலக்கம், குழப்பம், சந்தேகம் எழுந்தன என்பதை நற்செய்திகள் கூறுகின்றன.
இயேசுவிடம் கேட்க முடியாமல், மனதுக்குள் மற்ற சீடர்கள் புதைத்து
வைத்திருந்த இதே சந்தேகத்தைத்தான் தோமா வாய்விட்டுச் சொன்னார். எனவே தோமாவை மட்டும்
சந்தேகப் பேர்வழி என்று கண்டனம் செய்யாமல், எல்லா சீடர்களுமே
சந்தேகத்தில், பயத்தில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார்கள் என்பதை முதலில் புரிந்து கொள்ளவேண்டும்.
அவர்களது பயம், சந்தேகம் எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் காரணம் இருந்தது. அதையும்
புரிந்து கொள்ள முயல்வோம்.
தங்கள் குடும்பங்களையும்,
மீன் பிடிக்கும் தொழிலையும் விட்டுவிட்டு இயேசுவை நம்பி மூன்றாண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்தவர்கள்
இந்தச் சீடர்கள். இந்த மூன்று ஆண்டுகளில் இயேசுதான் அவர்களது உலகம் என்று ஆகிப் போன
நேரத்தில், அந்த உலகம் ஆணி வேரோடு வெட்டப்பட்டு, சிலுவையில் தொங்கவிடப்பட்டது. இயேசுவை அடித்தளமாய் வைத்து
அவர்கள் கட்டியிருந்த பல மனக் கோட்டைகள் தரை மட்டமாக்கப்பட்டன.
எருசலேமில், கல்வாரியில் அவர்கள் கண்ட காட்சிகள் அவர்களை
முற்றிலும் நிலை குலையச் செய்துவிட்டன. இயேசு அவர்கள் வாழ்வில் விட்டுச்சென்ற வெற்றிடத்தை,
சந்தேகமும் பயமும் நிரப்பிவிட்டன. யாரையும், எதையும்
சந்தேகப்பட்டனர். தங்களில் ஒருவரே இயேசுவைக் காட்டிக்கொடுத்ததால், இதுவரை அவர்கள் ஒருவர்
மீது ஒருவர் வைத்திருந்த நம்பிக்கை தொலைந்து போனது. சிலுவையில் கந்தல் துணிபோல் தொங்கிக்
கொண்டிருந்த இயேசுவை உடலோடு புதைப்பதற்கு முன்பே, மனதால் அவரைப்
புதைத்துவிட்டனர் சீடர்கள்.
நம் வாழ்வையும் சந்தேகம்
ஆட்டிப் படைக்கும்போது நாம் செய்வது என்ன? உள்ளத்தையும் சிந்தனையையும் இறுகப் பூட்டிவிட்டு, இருளில்
புதையுண்டு போகிறோம். உறவுகளில் ஏற்படும் சந்தேகங்களைத் தீர்க்கும் சிறந்த வழி என்ன?
மனம் விட்டுப் பேசுவது. இதைத்தான் இயேசு செய்து காட்டினார். மனதில் துளிர்க்கும்
சந்தேகத்தை வேரறுக்க வாய் வார்த்தைகள் மட்டும் போதாது, சில வேளைகளில்
ஆங்கிலத்தில் சொல்வதுபோல் 'physical proof', உடலளவு நிரூபணங்கள் தேவைப்படலாம். இவை அனைத்தையும் இயேசு வழங்கினார்
என்பதை இன்றைய நற்செய்தி தெளிவாக்குகிறது. வாய் வார்த்தைகளாலும், தன் உடலையை நிரூபணமாக அளிப்பதாலும் தோமாவை அவரது நம்பிக்கையற்ற கல்லறையிலிருந்து
இயேசு உயிர்ப்பிக்கிறார்.
இயேசுவின் அழைப்பை
ஏற்று, தோமா இயேசுவைத் தொட்டாரா என்பதில் தெளிவில்லை. உடலால் தோமா இயேசுவைத் தொட்டிருக்கலாம், தொடாமல் போயிருக்கலாம். ஆனால், இந்த அழைப்பின் மூலம் அவர் மனதை இயேசு மிக ஆழமாகத் தொட்டார். எனவே அந்த மிக
ஆழமான மறையுண்மையை தோமா கூறினார். "நீரே என் ஆண்டவர்! நீரே என் கடவுள்!"
(யோவான் 20: 28) இயேசுவை, கடவுள்
என்று கூறிய முதல் மனிதப்பிறவி தோமாதான். தன்னை இயேசு இப்படி ஆழமாய்த் தொட்டதால், அவர் கண்ட அந்த அற்புத உண்மையை உலகெங்கும்,
சிறப்பாக, இந்திய மண்ணிலும் பறைசாற்றினார் தோமா.
இறைவனின் பேரன்பும், இரக்கமும் எத்தனையோ அற்புதங்களை ஆற்றவல்லது.
அறிவுத்திறனுக்கு எட்டாத இறைவனை நம்பும்போது, இறைவனின் இரக்கத்தை
நம்பும்போது, நம் வாழ்வில் உருவாகும் சந்தேகப் புயல்கள் தானாகவே
அடங்கும்; சந்தேகத்தில் புதையுண்ட நாம், கல்லறைகளிலிருந்து உயிர்
பெறுவோம். இந்த அற்புதங்களை ஆற்றும் இறை இரக்கத்தை நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் வாழ்வில் உணர,
