Let’s begin today’s reflections with a legendary leader – Alexander the Great. When Emperor Alexander the Great was crossing the Makran Desert on his way to Persia, his army ran out of water. The soldiers were dying of thirst as they advanced under the burning sun. A couple of Alexander's lieutenants managed to capture some water from a passing caravan. They brought some to him in a helmet. He asked, “Is there enough for both me and my men?” “Only you, sir,” they replied. Alexander then lifted up the helmet as the soldiers watched. Instead of drinking, he tipped it over and poured the water on the ground. The men let up a great shout of admiration. They knew their general would not allow them to suffer anything he was unwilling to suffer himself.

Sensitivity of Alexander and his desire to be identified with his soldiers are strongly portrayed in the above-mentioned incident. Sensitivity, tenderness and identifying with people are not usually considered the most important aspects of a worldly leader. Unfortunately, these aspects are not considered the most important for religious leaders too in the 21^st century. The model of leadership set by the worldly leaders has, unfortunately, become a yardstick by which Church leadership is also measured. We talk of how ‘efficient’ our Church or Religious leaders are. We are also sadly aware that quite many of our leaders – like Bishops, religious Superiors – are given training in ‘managerial skills’ by management schools. This Sunday gives us an opportunity to think of leadership in the Church by a different yardstick… the model of Christ – the Good Shepherd.

The Fourth Sunday of Easter is called the Good Shepherd Sunday. This is also The World Day of Prayer for Vocations. April 21, this Sunday, Pope Francis is ordaining ten deacons in St Peter’s Basilica. Hence, we can see this Sunday as an invitation to reflect on leadership in the Church and pray for the present and future leaders of the Church.

What are the primary qualities expected of Church / Religious Leader? Instead of browsing through erudite articles from books, let us try to learn from an open book, living in Vatican. Yes… I am talking of Pope Francis, who has been, for the past one month, giving a fresh outlook on how to be a leader and how to look at leadership in the Church. It is interesting to see that his leadership style seems to have rubbed on to the world leaders as well – at least to some extent.

When Pope Francis assumed leadership of the Church on March 19^th, he emphasized on the theme of sensitivity and tenderness in his homily. What he preached, he had already practiced during his interactions with the people gathered in St Peter’s Square. Before the Inaugural Mass, when he took a ride in the Square, he was keen on reaching out to the people, especially to the sick. He got down from his vehicle to embrace and kiss a differently-abled person. During the homily he spoke of the aspect of sensitivity very clearly. Here is an excerpt from his homily:

Please, I would like to ask all those who have positions of responsibility in economic, political and social life, and all men and women of goodwill: let us be “protectors” of creation, protectors of God’s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment. Let us not allow omens of destruction and death to accompany the advance of this world! But to be “protectors”, we also have to keep watch over ourselves! Let us not forget that hatred, envy and pride defile our lives! Being protectors, then, also means keeping watch over our emotions, over our hearts, because they are the seat of good and evil intentions: intentions that build up and tear down! We must not be afraid of goodness or even tenderness!

Here I would add one more thing: caring, protecting, demands goodness, it calls for a certain tenderness. In the Gospels, Saint Joseph appears as a strong and courageous man, a working man, yet in his heart we see great tenderness, which is not the virtue of the weak but rather a sign of strength of spirit and a capacity for concern, for compassion, for genuine openness to others, for love. We must not be afraid of goodness, of tenderness!

Identifying with the people is another key feature of any leader, especially of the leaders of the Church. This has been the special feature of our Holy Father in the past one month. We are aware that he has almost always used the word ‘Bishop of Rome’ rather than the word ‘Pope’ to refer to himself. I think this is a conscientious decision he has made, namely, to identify himself as the pastor of a particular flock rather than as the head of a nameless entity called the universal church. From the moment he appeared on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica on March 13^th night, to this day, he has made it very clear that he was walking along with the people. Quite often he has mentioned that he was a sinner like any of us, requiring our prayers.

On Maundy Thursday morning (March 28^th) when he celebrated the Chrism Mass, he addressed the Priests in a special way and told them, “We need to ‘go out’, then, in order to experience our own anointing, its power and its redemptive efficacy: to the ‘outskirts’ where there is suffering, bloodshed, blindness that longs for sight, and prisoners in thrall to many evil masters. It is not in soul-searching or constant introspection that we encounter the Lord.

A priest who seldom goes out of himself, who anoints little misses out on the best of our people, on what can stir the depths of his priestly heart. Those who do not go out of themselves, instead of being mediators, gradually become intermediaries, managers… This is precisely the reason why some priests grow dissatisfied, become sad priests, lose heart and become in some sense collectors of antiques or novelties – instead of being shepherds.”

That same day (Maundy Thursday) evening, Pope Francis celebrated the Mass of the Lord’s Supper with the juvenile prisoners in Casal del Marmo, Rome. He washed their feet. When the young boys at the juvenile detention facility in Los Angeles heard of Pope Francis’ plan of celebrating Mass at Rome’s Casal del Marmo prison with the young inmates, they wrote letters to him, thanking him for his gesture of love and service, and praying for him. Here are some of those letters that are both painful and hopeful at the same time:

Dear Pope Francis,

Thank you for washing the feet of youth like us in Italy. We also are young and made mistakes.

Society has given up on us, thank you that you have not given up on us.

Dear Pope Francis,

I don't know if you have ever been to where I live. I have grown up in a jungle of gangs and drugs and violence. I have seen people killed. I have been hurt. We have been victims of violence.

It is hard to be young and surrounded by darkness. Pray for me that one day I will be free

and be able to help other youth like you do.

Dear Pope Francis,

I am glad you picked the name Francis. When I was little I read about St.Francis. He is a cool saint. He was a man of peace and simplicity. I am praying to you that you pray that we have peace in our gang filled neighborhoods.

Dear Pope Francis,

I have never been to Rome. I do not know if it is near Los Angeles because all my youth I have only known my neighborhood. I hope one day I will be given a second chance and receive a blessing from you and maybe even have my feet washed on Holy Thursday.

Dear Pope Francis,

From reading I know that us kids are capable of making decisions like older people do. I have seen pictures of brains of kids and adults. I am asking you as Pope to help us and help other people understand we can change and want to change.

It is very clear that the gesture of Pope Francis going in search of the lost sheep has touched the core of these young persons. We can be sure that the youth in Casal del Marmo have also been touched and transformed likewise!

Ten days back, on 11^th April, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Korean War Army chaplain Fr Emil Kapaun the Medal of Honour, bestowing the highest military honour. The moment we think of army or military, we always think of those who have fought with weapons. But, here was a Catholic Priest who was in the military but never carried a weapon. "This is the valor we honor today - an American soldier who didn't fire a gun, but who wielded the mightiest weapon of all, a love for his brothers so pure that he was willing to die so that they might live," said Obama. Fr Kapaun brought hope and healing among the soldiers. His bravery was proved, not in killing enemies, but in bringing Christ to friends and foes alike. In his speech, Obama often referred to Fr Kapaun as the "shepherd in combat boots."

We pray God that the Holy Spirit guides Pope Francis, and all of us to become more authentic leaders. Authentic leadership comes from our internal conviction that we are primarily called to be caring and loving shepherds filled with sensitivity, tenderness and the desire to identify ourselves with the people whom we serve. If only the Leaders put into practice the most important qualities lived by Jesus, the Good Shepherd, the youth – the future leaders – would easily recognize God’s call in their lives.

ஒரு தலைவனுக்குத் தேவையான பண்புகள் எவை என்ற கேள்வி எழுந்தால், நிரவாகத் திறமை, அறிவுக் கூர்மை, வீரம் என்ற பண்புகளையே முதலில் எண்ணிப் பார்ப்போம். இளகிய, மென்மையான மனம், மக்களுடன் தன்னையே ஒருவராக இணைக்கும் விருப்பம் போன்ற பண்புகளை நாம் எண்ணிப் பார்ப்பதில்லை. "எங்கத் தலைவருக்கு ரொம்ப இளகிய மனசு" என்று யாராவது சொன்னால், அதை, கேலி கலந்த ஒரு சிரிப்புத் துணுக்காகவே பார்ப்போம்.

மாவீரன் அலெக்சாண்டரைப்பற்றி நாம் பகிர்ந்த இந்த நிகழ்வில், அவரது இளகிய, மென்மையான மனமும், வீரர்களுடன் தன்னையே ஒருவராக இணைத்துக்கொள்ளும் தியாகமும் தெளிவாகின்றன. உலகத் தலைவர்களிடம் இத்தகையப் பண்புகளை எதிர்பார்ப்பது செயற்கையானது, வீணானது என்பது நமது உறுதியான எண்ணம். உலகின் அரசியல் மற்றும் வர்த்தகத்தலைவர்கள், தலைமைத்துவத்தைப்பற்றி உருவாக்கித் தந்துள்ள தவறான இலக்கணம் இவ்விதம் நம்மை எண்ணத் தூண்டுகிறது.

இதில் பொதிந்துள்ள மற்றொரு ஆபத்து என்னவென்றால், உலகத் தலைவர்களிடம் காணப்படும் நிர்வாகத்திறமை, அறிவுக்கூர்மை போன்ற பண்புகளையே ஆன்மீகத் தலைவர்களிடம், மதத் தலைவர்களிடம், திருஅவைத் தலைவர்களிடம் நாம் எதிர்பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டோம். தலைவர்களுக்குரிய பண்புகள் என்று மேலாண்மை நிறுவனங்கள் சொல்லித்தரும் பாடங்களை ஆன்மீகத் தலைவர்களும் கற்றுக் கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்ற போக்கும் உருவாகி வருவதைக் காணமுடிகிறது. ஆபத்தான இந்தப் போக்கிற்கு ஒரு மாற்றாக, ஆன்மீகத் தலைவர்களிடம் நாம் எவ்வகைப் பண்புகளை எதிர்பார்க்கவேண்டும் என்பதைச் சிந்திக்க இந்த ஞாயிறு நமக்கு ஒரு வாய்ப்பை அளித்துள்ளது.

உயிர்ப்புக் காலத்தின் 4ம் ஞாயிறு, நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறு என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்த ஞாயிறு, இறையழைத்தலுக்காகச் செபிக்கும் உலக நாள் என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. 1963ம் ஆண்டு திருத்தந்தை 6ம் பவுல் அவர்களால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட இந்த நாளின் பொன்விழா, இந்த நம்பிக்கை ஆண்டில் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. அத்துடன், ஏப்ரல் 21, இந்த ஞாயிறன்று, புனித பேதுரு பசிலிக்காப் பேராலயத்தில், பத்து தியாக்கோன்களை திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் அருள் பணியாளர்களாகத் திருநிலைப்படுத்துகிறார். நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறு, இறையழைத்தல் ஞாயிறு, இளையோர் அருள்பொழிவு பெறும் ஞாயிறு என்ற எண்ணங்களை எல்லாம் இணைக்கும்போது, திருஅவையின் இன்றையத் தலைவர்கள், நாளையத் தலைவர்கள் ஆகியோரைப்பற்றி சிந்தித்து, செபிக்க அழகியதொரு தருணத்தை இஞ்ஞாயிறு உருவாக்கித் தருகிறது.

திருஅவையின் இன்றையத் தலைவர்களிடமும், நாளையத் தலைவர்களிடமும் நாம் எதிர்பார்க்கும், அல்லது எதிர்பார்க்க வேண்டிய பண்புகள் எவை? இந்தக் கேள்விக்கு புத்தகங்களிலும், கட்டுரைகளிலும் ஏட்டளவு பதில்களைத் தேடாமல், நடைமுறை வாழ்விலிருந்து பதில்களைத் தேட முயல்வோம். நடை முறை வாழ்வில் நாம் தேடும் தலைவராக, திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்களை எண்ணிப்பார்க்கலாம். ஒரு தலைவருக்கு வேண்டிய பண்புகள் எவை என்பதை, கடந்த ஒரு மாத காலமாக, தன் சொல்லாலும், செயலாலும், திருஅவைக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, உலகத் தலைவர்களுக்கும் அவர் பல வழிகளில் உணர்த்தி வருகிறார்.

தன் இளகிய, மென்மையான மனதையும், மக்களோடு தன்னை இணைத்துக்கொள்ள விழையும் ஆவலையும் செயல்வழி வெளிப்படுத்தும் திருத்தந்தை, தலைமைப் பணியேற்றத் திருப்பலியில் வழங்கிய மறையுரையில், தலைமைப் பணியின் இலக்கணத்தை வரையறுத்தார். தலைவர் ஒரு பாதுகாவலர் என்ற கோணத்தில், புனித யோசேப்பு, புனித பேதுரு ஆகியோரை எடுத்துக்காட்டாக மக்களுக்குச் சுட்டிக்காட்டினார் திருத்தந்தை. தலைமைத்துவம், ஒரு பணியே அன்றி, பதவியோ, அதிகாரமோ அல்ல என்பதை தெளிவாக்கினார். தலைவர், அல்லது காவலர் என்பவர் இளகிய, மென்மையான மனம் கொண்டவராக இருக்கத் தயங்கக்கூடாது என்று அவர் வலியுறுத்தினார். இதோ, திருத்தந்தை ஆற்றிய மறையுரையிலிருந்து ஒரு சில எண்ணங்கள்:

பாதுகாவல் என்ற பணிக்கு, நன்மைத்தனமும், மென்மையும் கொண்டிருப்பது அவசியம். மென்மையான மனது கொண்டிருப்பதை வலுவிழந்த நிலையாகக் காண்பது தவறு, மென்மை உணர்வுகள் கொண்டோரிடமே, கனிவு, கருணை, பிறரின் உணர்வுகளுக்கு மதிப்பளிப்பது போன்ற நற்பண்புகள் காணப்படும். எனவே, நன்மைத்தனத்தையும், மென்மையான உணர்வுகளையும் கண்டு நாம் அஞ்சக்கூடாது.

புனித யோசேப்புவின் பெருவிழாவுடன், உரோம் மறைமாவட்டத்தின் புதிய ஆயர் பணியின் துவக்கவிழாவையும் இன்று நாம் கொண்டாடுகிறோம். பேதுருவின் வழித்தோன்றல் என்ற நிலை அதிகாரமுள்ள ஒரு நிலை. இயேசு பேதுருவுக்கு அதிகாரம் அளித்தார். ஆனால், அது, எவ்வகை அதிகாரம்?

பணிபுரிவதே உண்மையான அதிகாரம். இந்தப் பணியில் தன்னை முழுவதும் இணைத்து, சிலுவையில் இறுதியில் இணைவதே திருத்தந்தையின் அதிகாரம். சிறப்பாக, மனுக்குலத்தில் வறியோர், வலுவிழந்தோர், எவ்வகையிலும் முக்கியத்துவம் பெறாதோர் திருத்தந்தையின் பணியில் முதலிடம் பெறவேண்டும். அன்புடன் பணிபுரிபவர்களால் மட்டுமே அகிலத்தைப் பாதுகாக்க முடியும்.

மக்களைப் போலவே தானும் ஒரு பாவி என்பதையும், மக்களோடு பயணம் செய்யும் ஒரு பயணி என்பதையும் அடிக்கடி கூறும் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், மக்கள் தனக்காகச் செபிக்கவேண்டும் என்பதையும், தன் உரைகளில் கூற மறப்பதில்லை.

மக்களில் ஒருவராகத் தன்னை கரைத்துக்கொள்ளாத அருள் பணியாளர்கள் வாழ்வு பயனற்றது என்பதையும், மக்களிடமிருந்து விலகி, ஒரு தீவாக வாழும்போது அருள் பணியாளர்கள் விரக்தி அடைகின்றனர் என்பதையும் புனித வியாழனன்று ஆற்றிய காலைத் திருப்பலியில் அழுத்தந்திருத்தமாகக் கூறினார் திருத்தந்தை. அன்று மாலை, அவர் உரோம் நகரில் உள்ள Casal del Marmo எனும் இல்லத்தில், வளர் இளம் கைதிகளுக்குத் இயேசுவின் இறுதி இரவுணவுத் திருப்பலியாற்றியபோது, அவர்கள் காலடிகளைக் கழுவினார். சமுதாயத்தால் ஒதுக்கி வைக்கப்பட்ட இளையோரை ஒரு நல்ல ஆயனாகத் தேடிச்சென்று அவர்களுக்குரிய மதிப்பை வழங்கிய திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்களின் இந்த முயற்சி, அமெரிக்காவின் Los Angeles நகரில் உள்ள வளர் இளம் கைதிகளின் மனதைப் பெரிதும் ஈர்த்தது. அவர்களில் பலர் திருத்தந்தைக்கு மடல்கள் எழுதியுள்ளனர். இதோ, அக்கடிதங்களில் சில:

நான் கடந்து வந்த வாழ்வைப் போல ஓர் அனுபவம் உங்களுக்கு இருந்ததா என்பதை அறியேன். போதைப் பொருளிலும், வன்முறையிலும் ஊறிய குழுக்கள் அடங்கிய காட்டில் நான் பிறந்து வளர்ந்தேன். சிறுவயது முதல் கொலைகளைப் பார்த்துப் பழகியவன் நான். இளவயதில் இத்தகைய இருளால் சூழப்படுவது மிகவும் கடினமாக உள்ளது. ஒரு நாள் எனக்கு விடுதலை கிடைத்து, நானும் உங்களைப் போல் மற்ற இளையோருக்கு உதவிகள் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று எனக்காக வேண்டிக் கொள்ளுங்கள்.

அன்புத் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ்,

என்னைப் போன்ற ஓர் இளைஞனின் காலடிகளை நீர் கழுவுகின்றீர். போதைப் பொருளுக்கு அடிமையானவன் நான். தற்போது அதிலிருந்து விடுதலை பெற எங்களில் பலர் முயன்று வருகிறோம். நீங்கள் எங்களுக்கு நம்பிக்கை அளித்துள்ளீர்கள். இப்பழக்கத்தைக் கைவிடவும், போதைக்கு அடிமையான மற்றவர்களைக் காப்பாற்றவும் நான் முயற்சிகள் எடுப்பேன்.
