The passengers settled in their seats and the flight took off. The plane was cruising at a height of 50,000 feet when there was a sudden jolt. For those who were accustomed to the air-pockets, this seemed different. Soon a murmur (call it a rumour) went around the passengers that there was a major mechanical failure. Many of them closed their eyes and gripped their seats; while some others began reciting their prayers. Since the turbulence went on for what seemed like an interminable period, even the crew began feeling a bit concerned. Almost all who were aboard that plane were ready to press their panic buttons. Almost all… except one little girl, aged 10. She was reading her comic book. The man sitting next to her asked her: “Don’t you feel scared?” The girl looked up from her book with an angelic smile and said: “Nope… My Dad is the pilot of this plane!” The secret of her remaining so peaceful was that her Dad was in charge!

Today we are invited to reflect on what keeps us peaceful. What keeps / does not keep the world peaceful? Jesus talks of his gift of peace to his disciples. He speaks of this peace amidst an ambience of uncertainty, doubt and fear that prevailed during the Last Supper.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)

This promise of Jesus brings to focus two types of peace – peace given by Jesus and peace given by the world. Jesus seems to suggest that this is a case of ‘either-or’, not ‘and-also’. One against the other! We are given a choice of this or that and not both. This is our challenge. Most of us would like to have ‘both’. In fact we would like to have the best of all possible worlds!

I am reminded of the book ‘The Best Of All Possible Worlds’ written by Peter De Rosa. In the words of the author, this is “the story of a kind and fair God who was determined to create a world completely free of pain and misery.” How we wish that God creates such a world where everything is so perfect that we don’t encounter pain. This is not the promise of Jesus to his disciples. He promises them peace – a different kind of peace from the one given by the world.

We are not sure what kind of peace the world of Jesus’ time promised to his disciples. But, we can be sure that whether it is Jesus’ time or our own, the peace defined by the world would be diametrically opposed to the peace of the Kingdom, promised by Jesus.

Here are some ‘definitions’ of peace ‘according to the world’:

• It is easier to lead men to combat, stirring up their passion, than to restrain them and direct them toward the patient labors of peace. - Andre Gide
• If they want peace, nations should avoid the pin-pricks that precede cannon shots. - Napoleon Bonaparte
• Yes, we love peace, but we are not willing to take wounds for it, as we are for war. - John Andrew Holmes
• I prefer peace. But if trouble must come, let it come in my time, so that my children can live in peace. - Thomas Paine

In most of these quotes we can see that Peace is defined mainly as the absence of conflict. Herodotus, the Greek historian who lived in 5^th Century B.C. contrasts war and peace in a graphic way: In peace, sons bury their fathers. In war, fathers bury their sons. – Herodotus

I remember the statement made by a mother from Sri Lanka describing the effect of decades of civil war suffered by the people there. “In nature, a tree has its roots buried underground, while the branches, leaves and fruits are above the ground. In our country, we have buried the fruits of our wombs under the ground and we, the roots, stay above the ground, uprooted!” This shocking picture painted by this mother seems to portray reality of almost all the countries around the world today.

Planting a tree with its roots above the ground and the leaves under the soil can only mean one thing – madness. But, this seems to be logic of most of the government plans. Almost all the countries are willing to bury their young men and women under the pretext of war. The defence budgets of almost all the countries have madness written all over. According to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), world military expenditure in 2012 totalled $1753 billion. This works out to be around 4.8 billion per day. To understand this figure, I wish to present this imaginary mathematics. If 4.8 billion dollars were divided among all the human beings in the world today, each one of us will get 250 dollars… that is 250 dollars per day, every day of the year if there were no armies in the world! My mind in a flash travelled to Bangladesh where most of those who were killed in the building collapse were earning 38 dollars per month!

The U.N. and other global institutions have said over and over again that unless governments come forward to abolish the scandalous chasm that exists between the rich and the poor in every country and between the rich and poor countries, it would be impossible to ensure peace in the world. The U.N. also claims that if only 5% of the defence budget of the world is spent on human development goals, it would be easier to achieve our millennium goals by 2015. None of these recommendations seems to have made any impact on the warped minds of our governments. They believe that peace can be ensured ONLY by military power.

Against such a background the words of Jesus seems to make more sense than ever before. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.”

Peace as promised or given by the world is simply the peace of a graveyard. Peace as promised by Jesus is a way of life. How does one achieve this peace? “We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves” says Dalai Lama.

I am sure many of us (including myself) felt good heaping criticisms against governments for not working towards peace. But, the last quote from Dalai Lama seems to challenge us fair and square. Where do we begin? From ourselves. My favourite columnist Ron Rolheiser says this in another way when he talks of ‘Waging Peace’.

When we cannot get along with each other within our own marriages and families, we should not be surprised that countries do not get along with each other. When we cannot move beyond past hurts in our own lives, we should not expect the issues causing violence in Northern Ireland, Israel, Bosnia, Iran, and Africa, can be resolved simply by better politics. When we spend billions of dollars a year on cosmetics and clothing that serve to build up our appearance so as to be less vulnerable, we have no right to self-righteously demand that governments cut their budgets for defence…

Hence, waging peace requires more than simply confronting the powers that be. What must, ultimately, be confronted is our own greed, our own hurt, our own jealousy, our own inability to forgive, compromise, and respect. More than we need to convert bad systems, we need to convert ourselves…

Here is a final anecdote given by Rolheiser that gives us a clue as to where we can look for guidance in our struggle for Peace…

There is a story told about a Lutheran pastor, a Norwegian, who was arrested by the Gestapo during the Second World War. When he was brought into the interrogation room, the Gestapo officer placed his revolver on the table between them and said: "Father, this is just to let you know that we are serious!" The pastor, instinctually, pulled out his Bible and laid it beside the revolver. The officer demanded: "Why did you do that?"

The pastor replied: "You laid out your weapon - and so did I!"

In waging peace we must keep in mind what our true weapons are and who the real enemy is.

விமானம் ஒன்று ஏறத்தாழ 50,000 அடி உயரத்தில் பறந்துகொண்டிருந்தபோது, திடீரென அதிர்ந்தது. ஒரு பக்கமாகச் சாய்ந்தது. விமானத்தில் இயந்திரம் பழுதடைந்ததாக, அதன் ஓர் இறக்கை பழுதடைந்ததாக பயணிகள் மத்தியில் வதந்திகள் பரவியதால், அவர்களது அச்சம் கூடியது. ஒரு சிலர் கண்களை மூடிக்கொண்டு இருக்கையைக் கெட்டியாகப் பிடித்தபடி அமர்ந்திருந்தனர். வேறு சிலர் தங்களுக்குத் தெரிந்த செபங்களைச் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தனர். பல நிமிடங்கள் இந்த நிலை நீடித்ததால், ஏறத்தாழ விமானத்தில் இருந்த அனைவரையுமே அச்சம் ஆட்கொண்டது... ஒரே ஒருவரைத் தவிர... ஆம், விமானத்தில் பயணம் செய்த பத்து வயது சிறுமி ஒருவர், எவ்வித பயமுமின்றி ஒரு கார்ட்டூன் புத்தகத்தை வாசித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அச்சிறுமி தனியே பயணம் செய்தார் என்பதும் தெளிவாகத் தெரிந்தது. அருகில் அமர்ந்திருந்த பெரியவர் அச்சிறுமியிடம், "உனக்குப் பயமாக இல்லையா?" என்று கேட்டார். அதற்கு அச்சிறுமி சிரித்தபடியே, "எனக்குப் பயமே இல்லை... ஏன்னா, எங்க அப்பாதான் இந்த விமானத்தை ஓட்டுகிறார்" என்று பதில் சொன்னார். அனைவரையும் அச்சுறுத்திய ஒரு சூழலில் அச்சிறுமியின் மனதில் அமைதியை விதைத்தது, தன் தந்தையின் மீது அச்சிறுமி கொண்டிருந்த அளவற்ற நம்பிக்கை.

யோவான் நற்செய்தி 14: 27

"அமைதியை உங்களுக்கு விட்டுச் செல்கிறேன்; என் அமைதியையே உங்களுக்கு அளிக்கிறேன். நான் உங்களுக்குத் தரும் அமைதி உலகம் தரும் அமைதி போன்றது அல்ல. நீங்கள் உள்ளம் கலங்கவேண்டாம்; மருளவேண்டாம்." 

இறுதி இரவுணவின்போது, இயேசு தன் சீடர்களுக்குத் தந்த பிரியாவிடை செய்தியின் ஒரு பகுதி இன்றைய நற்செய்தியாக ஒலிக்கிறது. உலகம் தரும் அமைதி, இறைவன் தரும் அமைதி என்ற இரு வேறு துருவங்களைச் சிந்திக்க, இவ்விரு துருவங்களையும் இணைக்க முடியுமா என்பதையும் சிந்திக்க இந்த ஞாயிறு நாம் அழைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளோம்.

உலகம் தரும் அமைதி என்று சொல்லும்போது, நம்மில் பலர் எண்ணிப்பார்ப்பது, போரும், பூசலும், சண்டையும், சச்சரவும் இல்லாத ஒரு நிலை. அமைதி என்ற சொல்லுக்கு உலகத் தலைவர்கள் தரும் ஒரு சில இலக்கணங்கள் இதோ:

"நாடுகளிடையே பீரங்கிகளால் உருவாகும் காயங்கள் தேவையில்லையெனில், சிறு குண்டூசி கொண்டு உருவாகும் காயங்களைத் தவிர்க்க வேண்டும். அதுதான் அமைதிக்கு வழி" என்று சொன்னவர் நெப்போலியன் போனபார்ட்.

அமைதியைப் பற்றி அண்ணல் காந்தி சொன்ன பல கூற்றுகளில் சிறந்ததொரு கூற்று: "கண்ணுக்குக் கண் என்று வாழ்வதால், உலகமே பார்வை இழந்துவிடும்."

Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people.

மனித வரலாற்றின் தந்தை என்றழைக்கப்படும் Herodotus, கி.மு. 5ம் நூற்றாண்டில் வாழ்ந்த ஒரு கிரேக்கச் சிந்தனையாளர். அமைதியையும், போரையும் இணைத்து இவர் சொன்ன வார்த்தைகள், அன்றிலிருந்து இன்றுவரை மனிதரிடையே வேரூன்ற முடியாமல் தவிக்கும் அமைதியைப்பற்றி நம்மைச் சிந்திக்கத் தூண்டுகின்றன: "ஒரு நாட்டில் அமைதி நிலவுகையில், மகன்கள் தங்கள் தந்தையரை அடக்கம் செய்வர். போர்க்காலத்தில், தந்தையர் தங்கள் மகன்களை அடக்கம் செய்வர்."

உள்நாட்டுப் போரினால் கடந்த பல ஆண்டுகள் காயப்பட்டு, இன்னும் தன் காயங்களைக் குணமாக்க முடியாமல் தவிக்கும் இலங்கையில், சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் ஒரு தாய் கூறிய வார்த்தைகள் இன்னும் என் நெஞ்சில் முள்ளாகத் தைத்து நிற்கின்றன:

“இயற்கை நியதியின்படி, ஒவ்வொரு மரத்திலும் வேர்கள் பூமிக்கடியில் இருக்கும். இலை, காய், கனி என்று மரத்தின் பலன்கள் பூமிக்கு மேல் இருக்கும். எங்கள் நாட்டிலோ நாங்கள் பெற்று வளர்த்த கனிகளான எங்கள் பிள்ளைகள் மண்ணுக்குள் புதையுண்டு கிடக்கின்றனர். வேர்களாகிய நாங்கள் பூமிக்குமேல் உயிரற்று திரிகிறோம்” என்று அந்தத் தாய் கூறிய வார்த்தைகள் இலங்கைக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, உலகின் பல நாடுகளுக்கும் இன்று பொருந்தும்.

வேர்கள் பூமிக்கு மேலும், கிளைகள், இலைகள், காய்கள், கனிகள் ஆகிய அனைத்தும் பூமிக்குள்ளும் இருக்கும்படி மரங்களை யாராவது நட்டால், அவரை மதி இழந்தவர் என்று எளிதில் கூறலாம். ஆனால், உலகில் இன்று இதுதானே நடைமுறை வழக்காக உள்ளது. ஆக்கப்பூர்வமான பணிகளில் ஈடுபட வேண்டிய இளையோர், ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டிலும் இராணுவத்தில் பணியாற்றுவதை நாம் எவ்வகையில் நியாயப்படுத்த முடியும்? தலைகீழாக நடப்பட்ட மரங்களைப் போல், மனித சமுதாயத்தை ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டிலும் தலைகீழாக மாற்றிவரும் அரசுகள், தாங்கள் செய்வது மதி இழந்த செயல் என்பதை உணராமல், இராணுவத்திற்கும், போர் கருவிகளுக்கும் செலவழிக்கும் பல இலட்சம் கோடி மதிப்புள்ள தொகையை நியாயப்படுத்தும் போக்கும் அதிகமாகி வருகிறது. முன்னேற்றங்களில் முதன்மை இடம் வகிப்பதாய் சொல்லப்படும் அமெரிக்க, ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகள் இத்தகையத் தலைகீழ் பாடங்களை நமக்குள் புகுத்தி, இராணுவம் ஒன்றே உலக அமைதிக்குச் சிறந்த பாதுகாப்பு என்று நம்மைச் சிந்திக்க வைத்துள்ளன. நாட்டின் பாதுகாப்பு என்ற பெயரில் படைக் கருவிகளுக்கும், இராணுவப் பராமரிப்புக்கும் செலவிடும் தொகையில் நூற்றில் ஒரு பங்கை மக்கள் முன்னேற்றத்திற்கென ஒவ்வோர் அரசும் செலவிட்டால், உலகின் வறுமையும், பட்டினியும் அறவே ஒழிக்கப்படும் என்று ஐ.நா.போன்ற அமைப்புக்கள் ஆய்வுகள் செய்து, புள்ளி விவரங்களுடன் அறிக்கைகளை வெளியிட்டுள்ளன.

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) என்பது உலக அமைதியை வலியுறுத்திவரும் ஓர் உலக ஆய்வு மையம். ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும் உலகின் அரசுகள் இராணுவத்திற்குச் செலவிடும் தொகையினை இந்த மையம் வெளியிட்டு வருகிறது. இம்மையம் அண்மையில் வெளியிட்டுள்ள அறிக்கையின்படி, உலகின் அனைத்து நாடுகளும் இணைந்து 2012ம் ஆண்டில் இராணுவத்திற்கு செலவிட்டத் தொகை 1753 பில்லியன் டாலர்கள். அதாவது, 1,75,300 கோடி டாலர்கள். உலகெங்கும் இராணுவங்களுக்கென ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் செலவாகும் தொகை குறைந்தது 4.8 பில்லியன் டாலர்கள். உலகில் உள்ள மனிதர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் இத்தொகை பிரித்து அளிக்கப்பட்டால், ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் நாளொன்றுக்கு குறைந்தது 250 டாலர்கள் கிடைக்கும். அண்மையில் பங்களாதேஷில் நிகழ்ந்த கட்டிட இடிபாட்டு விபத்தில் இறந்த தொழிலாளிகள் பெற்றுவந்த மாத ஊதியம் 38 டாலர்கள் என்பதை இங்கு நினைவுகூர்வது நல்லது. பொருளாதாரப் பாகுபாடுகளும், சமுதாய ஏற்றத்தாழ்வுகளும் ஆழமாக வேரூன்றியிருக்கும் உலகில் அமைதி நிலவுவது அரிது என்று ஐ.நா.உட்பட பல உலக அமைப்புக்கள் கூறி வந்தாலும், அவற்றைப் பொருட்படுத்தாமல், இன்னும் தங்கள் படைபலத்தை நம்பி அமைதியை நிலைநாட்ட விரும்பும் உலக அரசுகள் மதியொடு செயல்படுகின்றனவா என்ற கேள்வி நாளுக்கு நாள் வலுவடைந்து வருகின்றது.

சுருக்கமாகச் சொல்லவேண்டுமென்றால், உலகம் தரும் அமைதி, கல்லறையில் காணப்படும் அமைதி. பல நியாயங்கள் அங்கு புதைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. அந்த நியாயங்களுக்குக் குரல் கொடுத்தவர்கள் அங்கு புதைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். புதையுண்ட நீதிகளையும், நீதிமான்களையும் நாம் மறந்துவிட வேண்டும் என்ற அக்கறையுடன் அங்கு எழுப்பப்படும் கல்லறைகள் மிக அழகான பளிங்கினால் செய்யப்பட்டு, நம்மைப் பிரமிப்பில் ஆழ்த்துகின்றன. தேவைப்பட்டால், நம் கவனத்தை இன்னும் திசைதிருப்ப, பல அலங்காரங்களை இந்தக் கல்லறையில் செய்வதற்கும் உலக அரசுகள் தயங்காது.

இந்தக் கல்லறை அலங்காரங்களில் ஒன்று போதைப் பொருள்கள். போதைப் பொருள்கள் எந்த ஒரு நாட்டிலும் அதிகாரப்பூர்வமான வர்த்தகம் இல்லையென்றாலும், இராணுவத்திற்கு அடுத்தப்படியாக உலகில் மிகவும் அதிக இலாபம் ஈட்டும் வர்த்தகம் போதைப் பொருள் வர்த்தகம்தான். அரசுகளின் அதிகாரப்பூர்வ வர்த்தகம் இராணுவம் எனில், போதைப் பொருள்கள் மறைமுகமாக, அதே நேரம், பல அரசுகளின் ஆதரவுடன் நடைபெறும் வர்த்தகம். சமுதாய அளவில் இராணுவம் அமைதியைத் தரும் என்ற தவறான கருத்தை அரசுகள் மனதில் ஆழப்பதிக்கின்றன. போதைப் பொருள்கள் தனி மனித வாழ்வில் அமைதியைத் தரும் என்று கறுப்புப்பண உலகம் நம்மை நம்பவைக்கிறது.

உலகம் தரும் கல்லறை அமைதி உண்மை அமைதி அல்ல; அந்தக் கல்லறைக்கு முன்னும், கல்லறைக்குப் பின்னும் தேட வேண்டிய உண்மைகளே நமக்கு அமைதியைத் தரும் என்று சொல்வதற்கு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியும், இந்த உயிர்ப்புக் காலம் முழுவதுமே நம்மை அழைக்கின்றன. இயேசுவின் பாடுகள், உயிர்ப்பு வழியாக நாம் இந்த உண்மைத் தேடலில் இணைய வேண்டும் என்பதை வலியுறுத்தவே இயேசு தன் பிரியாவிடை பரிசாக, சீடர்களுக்கு தான் தரும் அமைதியைப் பற்றி கூறினார்:

"நான் உங்களுக்குத் தரும் அமைதி உலகம் தரும் அமைதி போன்றது அல்ல."

உலக அமைதிக்கும், உண்மை அமைதிக்கும் உள்ள ஒரு முக்கிய வேறுபாட்டை 1960களில் வாழ்ந்த Jimi Hendrix என்ற இசைக் கலைஞர் இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறார்:

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace."

"ஆட்சிமீது அன்பு கொள்வதை விட, அன்பை ஆட்சி செய்ய அனுமதித்தால், உலகம் அமைதியைக் காணும்."

உலக அமைதிக்கென அயராது உழைத்துவரும் தலாய் லாமா, உலகில் எப்போது அமைதி உருவாகும்? என்ற கேள்விக்கு இவ்வாறு பதில் சொல்கிறார்: "நம் உள் உலகில் அமைதியை உருவாக்க முடியவில்லையென்றால், வெளி உலகில் ஒரு நாளும் அமைதியை உருவாக்க முடியாது" “We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.” Dalai Lama

நமக்குள் எப்போது அமைதி உருவாகும்? நம்முள் பிளவுபட்டிருக்கும் பல பகுதிகள் ஒன்றிணைந்து வரும்போது அமைதி உருவாகும். இவ்வுலகம் காட்டும் பல்வேறு தவறான வழிகளை பின்பற்றி, நமக்குள் பல உலகங்கள் உருவாகும்போது, அந்த  உலகங்களுக்கிடையே போர் மூள்கிறது. இப்போரில் நாம் எப்பக்கம் சார்ந்திருக்கிறோம் என்பதை அறியாமல் தடுமாறுகிறோம்.

நமது உள் உலகம் வெளி உலகம் என்ற விமானங்கள் நிலைதடுமாறி, தாறுமாறாகப் பறந்தாலும், அந்த விமானங்களை இயக்குபவர் தந்தையாம் இறைவன் என்பதை நாம் ஒவ்வொருவரும் நம்பி ஏற்றுக்கொண்டால், தடுமாற்றங்கள் மத்தியிலும் உண்மை அமைதியை நாம் உணர முடியும்.

உண்மையையும், நீதியையும் நிலைநாட்ட தன் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் உழைத்து, அதற்காக தன் உயிரையும் இழந்த மார்ட்டின் லூத்தர் கிங் ஜூனியர் அமைதியைப் பற்றி சொன்ன வார்த்தைகளுடன் இன்றைய நம் சிந்தனைகளை நாம் நிறைவு செய்வோம்:

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.
