First Sunday of Advent

Typical of last-minute Christmas shoppers, a mother was running furiously from store to store.  Suddenly, she became aware that the pudgy little hand of her three-year-old son was no longer clutched in hers.  In panic, she retraced her steps and found him standing with his little nose pressed flat against a frosty window.  He was gazing at a manger scene.  Hearing his mother’s near hysterical call, he turned and shouted with innocent glee: "Look Mommy!  It’s Jesus - Baby Jesus in the hay!”  With obvious indifference to his joy and wonder, she impatiently jerked him away saying, "We don’t have time for that!" To me this is a parable! The words of the mother – “We don’t have time for that!” – is an alarm to wake us up before it is too late… I wish to extend this parable a bit more. The mother keeps running on the road and the little kid is literally being dragged to keep pace with her. But, he is more than confused about why his mother was in such a hurry. She has been talking about Christmas for the past ten days or more. She has been telling him also that Christmas was possible only because of Baby Jesus. Now, she does not seem to have time to even give a passing glance at Baby Jesus… Why so? The little kid is totally confused.

We are like this kid… being dragged along the busy shopping mall called the world which is stacked with material things up to a choking level. We wish to spend time at the core of this famous event called Christmas; but we don’t seem to have the time! The Mother Church, instead of dragging us away from the core of Christmas, wishes to give us almost four weeks to get ready for Christmas. She has given us the Advent Season.

Getting ready for the feast is more exciting than celebrating the very feast day. My childhood memories of Christmas flood my mind right now. The days preceding Christmas were very exciting. Crib to be put up, decorations to be done, new dress to be bought or stitched, sweets and savouries to be prepared… the list was endless. Everyone in the house, especially Mom, was very busy, over-worked, perhaps. I guess this is the same story for any festive season – be it Deepavali, or Pongal in India. Expectation and excitement seem to be twins. The season of Advent brims with joyous expectation.

Strangely, today’s gospel from Luke gives us more of a jolt rather than joy. Two weeks back, the Sunday’s Gospel reading taken from Mark spoke of the last days. Today, we hear of the last days again… this time, from the Gospel of Luke. Right at the beginning of a new liturgical year, we are asked to think of the end of the world… Why talk about the end at the beginning itself, especially when the end is quite frightful? I look at it this way. When we see what awaits us at the end, we can take enough care to make our journey more meaningful.

Knowing that the end would be terrible, we have two choices: run away from that end (but where?) or face the end. In facing the end, once again, we have two choices: either ‘endure’ the terror with unflinching courage, or ‘cure’ the terror with positive thoughts and feelings… What need not be endured can be cured! This is the topsy-turvy perspective of our usual ‘what cannot be cured must be endured’ stuff!

Well, perspectives can change the way we think and act! Jesus gives us a perspective in today’s gospel. He gives a list of all the terrifying signs first:  "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.” (Luke 21: 25-26)

I feel that this passage comes to us at an opportune moment. The U.N. Climate Change Summit -  COP 21 - will begin in Paris on Monday, November 30. The ‘signs in the sun, moon and stars; the anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea; the terror and apprehension of what is coming on the world’ have necessitated this Summit in Paris.

Talking of this Summit at the U.N. Office in Nairobi, Pope Francis said: “In a few days an important meeting on climate change will be held in Paris. It would be sad, and I dare say even catastrophic, were particular interests to prevail over the common good and lead to manipulating information in order to protect their own plans and projects. In this international context, we are confronted with a choice which cannot be ignored: either to improve or to destroy the environment. 

I express my hope that COP21 will achieve a global and “transformational” agreement based on the principles of solidarity, justice, equality and participation; an agreement which targets three complex and interdependent goals: lessening the impact of climate change, fighting poverty and ensuring respect for human dignity.”

Let us unite our prayers with the whole world to make sure that the hopes of millions of people, especially the poor, along with the hope of Pope Francis about the ‘transforming’ effect of COP 21, may come true.

Getting back to the Gospel of Luke, Jesus does not stop with enlisting terrifying signs, but goes on to give us a perspective: “When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21: 28) When all the people in the world faint and are scared of what is coming to the world, we are asked to stand up and lift up our heads. How is this possible? By changing our perspective, namely, looking at that calamity not as an end of the world, but as the beginning of redemption. If the end is seen as destruction, then we need to run away from there, escape destruction… but , if the end is seen as redemption, we don’t need to run away; but rather run towards the bosom of God… the end of the race!

Perspective can change our attitude and action. Destruction and doom, therefore, despair… These call for escape… Redemption, therefore, hope… These call for surrender. Nazi camps and the holocaust have been etched deeply in human psyche. The gory details of these camps serve as samples of doom and destruction. But, the very same camps have been beacons of hope as well. More than hundred films have been made on Nazi camps. Quite a few of them are very uplifting. One of them is: “LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL”.

A four year old boy is imprisoned along with his dad in the worst of conditions in a Nazi camp. The father tries to tell the boy that the whole thing is a game, a game where they need to score points: 20 for not insisting on going home, 10 for not asking for bread, 10 for hiding in the bunkers the whole day… and so on. Why does the boy need to score these points? He will be given a real army tank if he scores enough points.

Towards the end of the movie, the father of the boy is caught by the German soldiers and led away. The small boy is watching this. The father walks away as if he was marching in a triumphant parade… his head held high. He is shot at the corner of the street. The boy does not know that his Dad is dead. The next day, it so happens that the Germans are defeated and the US army gains access to the camp and the boy sees a real tank riding into the camp. He is thrilled to see the tank as predicted by his Dad. He is sure that he had won the tank! The film ends there.

It is heartening to see the father walking away to his death with head held high and the little boy riding out of the camp in a tank, with his head held high. They are the examples of what Jesus talks about in today’s Gospel: “When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Advent is a season that invites us to stand up, lift up our heads and see our salvation. Let us try to spread this hopeful attitude as we begin Advent!

P.S. On this First Sunday of Advent, Pope Francis is opening the Holy Door in the Cathedral of Bangui, the capital of Central African Republic. We know that the Jubilee Year of Mercy will begin on December 8. According to the original plan, on the first day of this Jubilee, Pope Francis would open the Holy Door at St Peter’s Basilica and inaugurate the special Jubilee. But, he had taken the special decision to open the Holy Door in Bangui Cathedral, ten days before the official inauguration of the Jubilee Year.

Announcing this decision on November 1, the Pope said: “I am spiritually close to the Combonian Fathers of the parish of Our Lady of Fatima in Bangui, which is welcoming many displaced people. I express my solidarity with the Church, other religious confessions and the entire nation, so sorely tried, as they make every effort to overcome divisions and to re-embark on the path of peace. To show the prayerful closeness of all the Church to this afflicted and tormented nation, and to exhort all Central Africans increasingly to be witnesses of mercy and reconciliation, I intend to open the Holy Door of the Cathedral of Bangui on Sunday 29 November, during the apostolic trip I hope to make to this nation”.

The opening of the Holy Door in many more Churches around the world during the Jubilee of Mercy is a symbolic gesture by which God’s mercy will flow out of various sanctuaries around the world and flood the world. We pray that our world, soaked in blood, will be washed with the mercy of God. It is very meaningful that the Holy Door is opened first in a nation torn by divisions, hatred and conflicts! May this gesture of Pope Francis help all those who perpetrate violence, to return to the path of peace and reconciliation!

திருவருகைக் காலம் - முதல் ஞாயிறு

இளம்தாய் ஒருவர் தன் 5 வயது மகனுடன் கடைவீதிக்குச் சென்றார். கிறிஸ்மஸ் கூட்டம் அலைமோதியது. கிறிஸ்மசுக்குத் தேவையான பொருட்களின் பட்டியல் ஒரு கையில், மற்றொரு கையில் மகன் என்று அந்த இளம்தாய் கடை, கடையாக ஏறி இறங்கினார். இறுதியில், எல்லாப் பொருட்களையும் சுமந்துகொண்டு கடைவீதியில் நடந்துகொண்டிருந்தவர், திடுக்கிட்டு நின்றார். தன்னுடன் வந்துகொண்டிருந்த மகனைக் காணவில்லை. பதைபதைப்புடன் அவர் மீண்டும் கடைக்குள் சென்றார். அங்கு கடையில் அலங்காரமாய் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த கிறிஸ்து பிறப்பு காட்சியைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தான், அவரது மகன். அவனைக் கண்டதும், தாய் கோபத்தில் கத்தினார். சிறுவனோ, அவரது கோபத்தை சற்றும் உணராமல், "அம்மா இங்க பாருங்க. குழந்தை இயேசு எவ்வளவு அழகா..." என்று ஆர்வமாய் சொல்ல ஆரம்பித்தான். அவன் சொல்லவந்ததைச் சற்றும் கேளாமல், "அதுக்கெல்லாம் இப்ப நேரம் இல்ல" என்று சொல்லியபடி, அவனைத் 'தரதர'வென இழுத்துக் கொண்டு நடந்தார்.

'அதுக்கெல்லாம் இப்ப நேரமில்ல' என்று அந்த இளம்தாய் சொன்னது நம்மையெல்லாம் தூக்கத்திலிருந்து விழித்தெழச் செய்யும் ஓர் அழைப்பு... இதை ஓர் எச்சரிக்கை என்று கூடச் சொல்லலாம்.

இந்தக் கதையைத் தொடர்ந்து கற்பனை செய்து பார்ப்போமே! அந்த இளம்தாயின் ஒரு கையில் இரண்டு அல்லது மூன்று பைகள்... பைகள் நிறையப் பொருட்கள். மற்றொரு கையில் அந்தச் சிறுவனைப் பிடித்து இழுத்த வண்ணம் ஓடுகிறார் அவர். தாயின் வேகத்திற்கு ஈடுகொடுக்க முடியாமல், கூடவே ஓடிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் சிறுவனுக்கு ஒரே குழப்பம். கடந்த சில நாட்களாக மூச்சுக்கு மூச்சு 'கிறிஸ்மஸ் வருது, கிறிஸ்மஸ் வருது' என்று அம்மா சொல்லக் கேட்டிருக்கிறான் சிறுவன். அந்தக் கிறிஸ்மசுக்குக் காரணம், குழந்தை இயேசு என்பதையும், அம்மா கதையாகச் சொல்வதைக் கேட்டிருக்கிறான் அவன். இன்றோ, குழந்தை இயேசுவைப் பார்க்கக்கூட நேரமில்லாமல், அம்மாவுக்கு ஏன் இந்த அவசரம் என்பதே அச்சிறுவனின் குழப்பம்.

குழம்பிப் போயிருக்கும் அச்சிறுவனைப் போலத்தான் நாமும். வண்ண விளக்குகளாலும், பொருட்களாலும் குவிந்து கிடக்கும் கடைவீதிதான் இவ்வுலகம். இக்கடைவீதியில் நாமும் அவசரமாக இழுத்துச் செல்லப்படுகிறோம். ஏன் இந்த அவசரம், எங்கு போகிறோம் என்று தெரியாமல் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். கிறிஸ்மஸ் என்றால் என்ன என்பதைப் புரிந்துகொள்வதற்கு நேரமே இல்லாமல், கடைவீதிக் கூட்டத்தில் காணாமற் போகிறோம். இந்த அவசரத்தில், ஆரவாரத்தில் நாம் தொலைந்து போகாமல் இருக்கவே, திருஅவை நமக்கு ஓர் அழகிய நேரத்தை, காலத்தை ஒதுக்கியுள்ளது. இன்று துவங்கி, டிசம்பர் 24ம் தேதி இரவு வரை, நமக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள இந்த அழகிய காலம்தான்... திருவருகைக் காலம்.

எந்த ஒரு விழாவாக இருந்தாலும் சரி, அந்த விழாவைவிட, அதற்கான ஏற்பாடுகள், எதிர்பார்ப்புகள் நம்மை அதிகம் கவர்கின்றன. நல்லது ஒன்று நடக்கப்போகிறது, நல்லது ஒன்றில் பங்கேற்கப்போகிறோம் என்ற எண்ணம், இந்தத் துடிப்பை, ஆர்வத்தை உண்டாக்குகிறது. இத்தகைய ஆர்வத்தை, எதிர்பார்ப்பை உருவாக்கும் காலம், திருவருகைக் காலம். பெரும்பாலும் ஆனந்தமான எண்ணங்களை உள்ளத்தில் விதைக்கும் காலம் இது. ஆனால், இன்றைய நற்செய்திப் பகுதி ஆனந்தத்திற்குப் பதிலாக, அச்சத்தை உருவாக்குகிறது. இரு வாரங்களுக்கு முன், உலக முடிவு பற்றி மாற்கு நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து ஒரு பகுதியை சிந்தித்தோம். இன்று லூக்கா நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து, உலக முடிவு பற்றி மீண்டும் ஒரு வாசகம்.

திருவருகைக் காலம் ஆரம்பமாகியிருக்கிறது. இன்றே முடிவைப்பற்றி நமது நற்செய்தி கூறுகிறது. ஆரம்பத்திலேயே, முடிவா? அதுவும் இப்படி ஒரு முடிவா? ஆரம்பத்திலேயே முடிவைத் தெரிந்துகொண்டால், அதற்கேற்றதுபோல் நடந்துகொள்ளலாமே! எதிர்நோக்குவது பயங்கரமான முடிவு என்றால், அதைச் சந்திக்க மனதை உறுதிப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளலாமே! இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் சொல்லப்பட்டிருப்பது நம் சொந்த வாழ்வின் முடிவு மட்டுமல்ல... இவ்வுலகத்தின் முடிவு.

லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 21: 25-28; 34-36

அக்காலத்தில் மானிட மகன் வருகையைப் பற்றி இயேசு தம் சீடர்களுக்குக் கூறியது: “கதிரவனிலும் நிலாவிலும் விண்மீன்களிலும் அடையாளங்கள் தென்படும். மண்ணுலகில் மக்களினங்கள் கடலின் கொந்தளிப்பின் முழக்கத்தினால் கலங்கி, என்ன செய்வதென்று தெரியாது குழப்பம் அடைவார்கள். உலகிற்கு என்ன நேருமோ என எண்ணி மனிதர் அச்சத்தினால் மயக்கமுறுவர். ஏனெனில், வான்வெளிக் கோள்கள் அதிரும். அப்போது மிகுந்த வல்லமையோடும் மாட்சியோடும் மானிடமகன் மேகங்கள் மீது வருவதை அவர்கள் காண்பார்கள். இவை நிகழத் தொடங்கும்போது, நீங்கள் தலைநிமிர்ந்து நில்லுங்கள்; ஏனெனில் உங்கள் மீட்பு நெருங்கி வருகின்றது.”

ஓர் எச்சரிக்கைபோல் ஒலிக்கும் இந்த நற்செய்தி பகுதி, நவம்பர் 29, இந்த ஞாயிறன்று நமக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளதை ஓர் அருள்மிகு தருணமாக கருதுகிறேன். காரணம், பாரிஸ் மாநகரில், நவம்பர் 30, இத்திங்கள் முதல் டிசம்பர் 11ம் தேதி முடிய நடைபெறவிருக்கும் ஒரு முக்கிய மாநாடு. காலநிலை மாற்றத்தை மையப்படுத்தி ஐ.நா.அவையால் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள இந்த உலக உச்சி மாநாடு, பூமிக் கோளத்தின் எதிர்காலத்தை தீர்மானிக்கும் அளவு முக்கியத்துவம் பெற்ற ஒரு மாநாடு. கதிரவன், நிலவு, விண்மீன் இவற்றில் தோன்றும் மாற்றங்கள், கடல் கொந்தளிப்பு, உலகிற்கு என்ன நேருமோ என்ற அச்சம்... என்று நற்செய்தியில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள ஒவ்வொரு வரியும், உலக உச்சி மாநாட்டு உறுப்பினர்களுக்குத் தரப்படும் எச்சரிக்கை போல ஒலிக்கின்றது.

147 நாடுகளின் அரசுத் தலைவர்கள், இன்னும் பல அரசு அதிகாரிகள் பங்கேற்கும் இந்த உச்சி மாநாட்டில், உலகிற்கு என்ன நேருகிறது என்பதை உண்மையான அக்கறையுடன் கண்டுணர்வதற்கு, மாநாட்டின் உறுப்பினர்களை இறைவன் வழிநடத்த வேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம்.

இவ்வியாழன் மாலை, கென்யா நாட்டின் நைரோபியில் உள்ள ஐ.நா.அவை அலுவலகத்தில் உரை வழங்கியத் திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், பாரிஸ் உச்சி மாநாட்டைக் குறித்துப் பேசுகையில், இவ்வாறு கூறினார்:

இன்னும் சில நாட்களில், பாரிஸ் நகரில், காலநிலை மாற்ற உலக உச்சி மாநாடு .நடைபெறவிருக்கிறது. இந்த மாநாட்டில், ஒரு சில தனிப்பட்ட ஆசைகளால், பொது நலன் திசை திருப்பப்பட்டால், அது மிக வேதனையாக, ஏன், சொல்லப்போனால், பெரும் அழிவாக அமையும்.

இந்த மாநாட்டில் கலந்துகொள்ளும் அரசியல் தலைவர்கள், வர்த்தகர்கள், பொதுத்துறை பிரதிநிதிகள் நடுவே நேர்மையான, திறந்தமனம் கொண்ட உரையாடல் இடம்பெற வேண்டியது அவசியம். அரசியல், அறிவியல், வர்த்தகம் ஆகிய துறைகள் நல்லெண்ணத்துடன் இணைந்தால் நல்லவை நடக்கும் என்பதற்கு எத்தனையோ எடுத்துக்காட்டுகள் உள்ளன.

21ம் நூற்றாண்டின் துவக்கத்தில் வாழும் நம் தலைமுறை, தன் கடமைகளை உணர்ந்து செயல்பட்டால், வருங்காலத் தலைமுறையினர் நம்மை பொறுப்புள்ளவர்கள் என்று நினைவுகூர்வர். இத்தகையச் சூழல் உருவாகவேண்டுமெனில், நாம் பொருளாதரத்தையும், அரசியலையும் மக்களின் பணிக்கென அர்ப்பணிக்கவேண்டும்.

தனி மனிதர்கள், தொழில் நிறுவனங்கள் வளர்த்துக்கொண்ட அளவுக்கு மீறிய பேராசையால், நமது சுற்றுச் சூழல் சீரழிந்து வருவதையும், காலநிலை மாற்றங்களால், மக்கள், குறிப்பாக, வறியோர், பெரும் அழிவுகளுக்கு உள்ளாவதையும் அறிவோம். இந்த அழிவுகளைத் தடுக்க, வலிமை மிக்க அரசுகளால் முடியும். ஆனால், அந்த அரசுகள், பேராசை கொண்ட நிறுவனங்களுக்குச் சாதகமான முடிவுகளை எடுக்காமல், மக்கள் நலனை முன்னிறுத்தி நல்ல முடிவுகளை எடுக்கவேண்டுமானால், தங்கள் மனசாட்சியின் குரலுக்குச் செவி சாய்க்க வேண்டும். இந்தப் புதுமை, COP 21 எனப்படும் இந்த உச்சி மாநாட்டில் நிகழ்வதற்கு, இறைவனை உருக்கமாக மன்றாடுவோம்.

சுற்றுச்சூழலைக் காப்பது, அரசுகளின் பணி மட்டுமல்ல; அது நம் ஒவ்வொருவரின் கடமை. நம் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்வில் சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதுகாப்பு குறித்து பல முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொள்ளலாம். நம் இல்லங்களில் தண்ணீர் மற்றும் மின்சக்தியை கவனமாகப் பயன்படுத்துவதில், அலுவலகங்களில் காகிதப் பயன்பாட்டைக் குறைப்பதில் நம் முயற்சிகள் துவங்கலாம். சொந்த வாகனங்கள் இருந்தால், அவற்றைப் பயன்படுத்துவதிலும், பிளாஸ்டிக் பொருள்களை பயன்படுத்தாமல் இருப்பதிலும் கூடுதல் கவனம் செலுத்தலாம்.

துவங்கவிருக்கும் காலநிலை உச்சி மாநாடு, மக்களுக்கு மிகவும் முக்கியமான ஒரு கூட்டம் என்பதை உலக அரசுகள் உணரவேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தில், உலகின் பல நாடுகளில் சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதுகாப்பை வலியுறுத்தி ஊர்வலங்களும், பிற நிகழ்ச்சிகளும் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. நாம் வாழும் பகுதியில் இத்தகைய பொது நிகழ்வுகள் நடைபெற்றால், அவற்றில் பங்கேற்பதும், நமது அக்கறையைக் காட்டும்.

உலக முடிவைப் பற்றி இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் வாசிக்கும்போது, அந்த முடிவைச் சந்திக்கும் மனநிலையைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்க வேண்டும். நாம் சந்திக்கப் போவது பயங்கரமான முடிவு என்றால், அதற்கு இருவகையில் பதில் சொல்லலாம். ஒன்று, பதுங்கி ஒளியலாம். அல்லது, துணிவுடன் எதிர்கொள்ளலாம். இப்படி எதிர்கொள்வதிலும் இரு வகை... ஒன்று, அந்தப் பயங்கரச் சூழலைப் 'பல்லைக் கடித்துக் கொண்டு' தாங்கிக் கொள்ளலாம். அல்லது, அந்த பயங்கரத்திலும் பயனுள்ள அர்த்தங்களைக் கண்டுபிடித்து, அவற்றிற்குச் செயல்வடிவம் கொடுக்கலாம். கடல் கொந்தளிப்பு, கலகம், குழப்பம், அச்சம் என்று பயம்தரும் ஒரு பட்டியலைத் தரும் இயேசு, அந்நேரத்தில் என்ன செய்யச் சொல்கிறார்? பதுங்கி ஒளியச் சொல்லவில்லை... தப்பித்து, தலைதெறிக்க ஓடச் சொல்லவில்லை... மாறாக, தலை நிமிர்ந்து நிற்கச் சொல்கிறார். காரணம்? இதன் பெயர் அழிவல்ல, இதுதான் மீட்பு என்பதால்... நம்மை தலை நிமிர்ந்து நிற்கச் சொல்கிறார். நாம் காணும் கண்ணோட்டம், நம் எண்ணங்களை மாற்றும்... நம் செயல்பாடுகளை மாற்றும்.

அழிவு என்று பார்த்தால், அலறி அடித்து ஓடத்தான் வேண்டும். மீட்பு என்று பார்த்தால், தலை நிமிர்ந்து நிற்போம், நம் கடவுளைச் சந்திக்க... தப்பிப்பதற்குப் பதில், தஞ்சம் அடைவோம் அந்த இறைவனில். கண்ணோட்டம், செயல்பாடுகளை மாற்றும்.

அழிவு, அவநம்பிக்கை இவற்றிற்கு அடிக்கடி சொல்லப்படும் எடுத்துக்காட்டுகள் இரண்டாம் உலகப் போரில் நடைபெற்ற அக்கிரமங்கள்... முக்கியமாக, யூத இனத்தை வேரோடு அழிக்க உருவாக்கப்பட்ட நாத்சி வதை முகாம்கள். ஆனால், அதே வதை முகாம்கள், நம்பிக்கை தரும் நல்ல பாடங்களைக் கற்றுத்தரும் பள்ளிகளாகவும் மாறின. நாத்சி வதை முகாம்களைப் பற்றி ஆயிரமாயிரம் கதைகள், திரைப்படங்கள் உள்ளன. 90களில் வந்த இரு திரைப்படங்களின் கதைகளை, இப்போது சிந்திக்கும் மீட்புக்கு, நாம் உதாரணமாகச் சொல்லலாம்.

"வாழ்க்கை அழகானது" (Life is Beautiful) என்ற தலைப்பில் வெளியான படம், நாத்சி வதை முகாமிற்கு இழுத்து செல்லப்படும் ஒரு சிறு குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றியது. தந்தை, தாய் ஒரு நான்கு வயது சிறுவன். தாய் தனியே அடைக்கப்படுகிறார். சிறுவன் தந்தையுடன் தங்கவேண்டிய கட்டாயம். நடப்பது என்ன என்று அறியாமல் இருக்கும் அச்சிறுவனிடம், அந்த வதை முகாமில் நடக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு பயங்கரச் செயலுக்கும் வித்தியாசமான விளக்கம் தருகிறார் தந்தை. அவர்கள் வந்திருப்பது ஒரு விளையாட்டிற்காக என்று தன் கற்பனைக் கதையை ஆரம்பிக்கிறார்...  திரும்பவும் வீட்டுக்குப் போகவேண்டுமென சிறுவன் அடம் பிடிக்காமல் இருந்தால் 20 புள்ளிகள் பெறலாம், பசிக்கிறதென்று அழாமல் இருந்தால், 10 புள்ளிகள் பெறலாம்... என்று தந்தை தன் நான்கு வயது சிறுவனிடம் கற்பனைக கணக்கொன்றைச் சொல்லி அவனை அந்த முகாமில் தங்கவைப்பது மிக அழகாகச் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்தப் புள்ளிகளெல்லாம் பெற்றால்...? ஒரு இராணுவ Tank பரிசாகக் கிடைக்கும் என்று தந்தை சொல்லும் கனவு, அச்சிறுவனைக் காப்பாற்றுகிறது.

திரைப்படத்தின் இறுதியில், மகனை ஓரிடத்தில் ஒளித்துவைத்துவிட்டுத் திரும்பும் தந்தை, ஜெர்மானிய வீரர்களால் பிடிபடுகிறார். மறைவிலிருந்து தன்னைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறான் மகன் என்பதை உணரும் தந்தை, அவனுக்கு முன் வீரநடை போட்டு வீரர்களுடன் செல்கிறார். மகனின் கண்களிலிருந்த அவர் மறைந்தபின், ஒரு தெரு முனையில் சுட்டுக் கொல்லப்படுகிறார். தந்தை இறந்ததைக்கூட அறிந்துகொள்ளாமல் அச்சிறுவன், அடுத்த நாள் காலை, மறைவிடத்திலிருந்து வெளியே வருகிறான். அந்தநாள் காலையில், ஜெர்மனி வீழ்ந்ததால், அமெரிக்கப் படையினரின் இராணுவ Tank அந்த முகாமுக்குள் வருகிறது. அதைக் காணும் சிறுவன், அப்பா சொன்னதுபோல உண்மையிலேயே தனக்கு Tank பரிசாகக் கிடைத்துவிட்டது என்ற மகிழ்ச்சியில் கூச்சலிடுகிறான். கதை முடிகிறது.

உங்களைச் சுற்றி அனைத்தும் அழிந்தாலும், நீங்கள் தலை நிமிர்ந்து நில்லுங்கள்... ஏனெனில் உங்கள் மீட்பு அருகில் உள்ளது... என்று இறைவன் சொன்னாலும், நெருங்கிவரும் மீட்பைக் காண நேரமில்லாமல், மற்ற எண்ணங்களைப் பட்டியலிட்டு வாங்கிச் சுமக்கிறோமா? உலகம் என்ற கடைவீதியில் விற்கப்படும் நம்பிக்கையற்றச் செய்திகளை மட்டுமே காதிலும் கருத்திலும் வாங்கி, நம் உள்ளங்களைத் தொலைத்துவிட்டு அலைகிறோமா?

அன்பர்களே, நம் உள்ளங்களில் நம்பிக்கையை விதைத்த நல்ல பல சம்பவங்களை, மேற்கோள்களை இத்திருவருகைக் காலம் முழுவதும் பகிர்ந்து கொள்வோம். நம்பிக்கை தரும் நல்ல செய்திகளை இன்னும் அதிகமாகப்  பரப்ப முயல்வோம்.

பின் குறிப்பு

நவம்பர் 29, இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் மத்திய ஆப்ரிக்க குடியரசு நாட்டில் திருத்தூதுப் பயணத்தை மேற்கொண்டுள்ளார். கென்யா, உகாண்டா ஆகிய இரு நாடுகளில் தன் பயணத்தை நிறைவு செய்து, தற்போது, மத்திய ஆப்ரிக்கக் குடியரசில் பயணத்தைத் தொடர்கிறார். இப்பயணத்தின் ஒரு சிகரமாக, இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று, பாங்கி (Bangui) உயர் மறைமாவட்டத்தின் பேராலயத்தில், புனிதக் கதவை திருத்தந்தை திறந்து வைக்கிறார்.

வருகிற டிசம்பர் 8ம் தேதி முதல், கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவையில், இரக்கத்தின் யூபிலி ஆண்டு துவங்கவுள்ளது. அந்த யூபிலி ஆண்டையொட்டி, உலகெங்கிலும் உள்ள பல பேராலயங்களிலும், திருத்தலங்களிலும் புனிதக் கதவுகள் திறக்கப்படும் என்று அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இறைவனின் இரக்கமும் அருளும் இந்த யூபிலி ஆண்டில் இவ்வுலகில் பாய்ந்து வரும் என்பதை உணர்த்தும் அடையாளமாகவே, புனிதக் கதவுகள் திறக்கப்படுகின்றன.

வன்முறையினால் காயப்பட்டிருக்கும் மத்திய ஆப்ரிக்கக் குடியரசில், திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் யூபிலி ஆண்டின் முதல் புனிதக் கதவைத் திறப்பது பொருத்தமாகத் தெரிகிறது. எங்கெல்லாம் மனுக்குலம் காயப்பட்டுள்ளதோ, அங்கெல்லாம் கடவுளின் கரையற்ற கருணை பாய்ந்து வரவேண்டும் என்பதை உணர்த்தவே, திருத்தந்தை, புனிதக் கதவை பாங்கி பேராலயத்தில் திறந்து வைக்கிறார். கருணை இவ்வுலகில் கரைபுரண்டு ஓடவேண்டும்; காயங்கள் ஆறவேண்டும் என்று, திருத்தந்தை கொண்டிருக்கும் ஆவல், நமது ஆவலாக, செபமாக மாறட்டும்.
