Home Coming…

Lessons from a Prodigal Father
The 4th Sunday of Lent

The Fourth Sunday of Lent, is celebrated as ‘Laetare Sunday’ – Rejoicing Sunday. Rejoicing is part and parcel of our lives. Most of us dream of life that is ‘non-stop-rejoicing’. But, we are aware that life is made of joy and sadness. We are also aware that many a time our sadness results from broken relationships. For this Rejoicing Sunday we are invited to dwell on one of the most famous parables of Jesus which speaks of a broken and mended relationship between a father and a son – the parable of the Prodigal Son.
Fr William Grimm, a Maryknoll priest from Tokyo shares Sunday reflections via UCAN website. He begins this week’s reflections on the title of this parable. According to him, this is not a story of a prodigal son, but a prodigal father. Here are his comments:
The parable is not about a prodigal son. It is about a prodigal father. The first thing he does is to give away one third of his possessions, the share that would eventually be inherited by the younger of the two sons.
(Here, I would like to make an observation… I am not sure whether the father gave the younger son ‘one-third’. I tend to think he gave ‘half’. The parable says: “He divided his living between them (meaning, the elder and the younger sons).” (Luke 15:12). This leaves nothing to the father. The ‘prodigality’ of the father begins right there! Let us get back to Fr Grimm.)
Right from the start of the story, then, the one who is ‘extremely generous, perhaps to the point of wastefulness’ – the definition of ‘prodigal’ – is not the son, but the father.

Fr Grimm goes on to show how the father was ‘prodigal’ especially in his forgiveness. This is what captivated my mind in his reflections for this week. He explains it thus:
It is time to ask when the forgiving happens in this story. Can it be when the son faces facts? No, it cannot be then, because, no one at home can hear him coming to his senses.
Can it be when he turns and begins his journey home? No, it cannot be then, he is too far off for the father to know.
Can it be when he falls at his father’s feet? No, it is not then, because, the father does not let him finish his confession.
So, when is the son forgiven?
The Gospel tells us that the father saw his son while he was still far off. The reason is clear. The father was standing outside, looking into the distance for his son’s return. In other words, when the son walked out the door, his father went out too. He stood there, waiting for his son to come to his senses and return. The father forgave the son’s sin as soon as it was committed. All that remained was for the son to come home and accept forgiveness….
That’s the point of Jesus’ parable.
The father, of course, is God, God whose love is so prodigal that no matter what foolishness I commit, forgiveness is there from the start. Jesus is saying that all I need to do is come to my senses, turn around and accept the gift God always offers.

Then, Fr Grimm goes on to turn our attention to the situation which prompted Jesus to come out with this parable, namely, the displeasure expressed by the Pharisees and the scribes since Jesus was surrounded by the tax collectors and sinners. Of course, as usual, the Pharisees went one step further and accused Jesus of ‘eating’ with sinners (Luke 15: 1), although it is not clear whether Jesus was doing so. Given a chance, Jesus would have gladly done that. Here is what Fr Grimm says about this situation:
The Pharisees and scribes … saw Jesus welcome sinners and eat with them. Eating with them was especially offensive.
One description of the Reign of God is a banquet for all God’s people. There might, perhaps, be space at the feast for sinners, but that would depend upon repentance and forgiveness, at the coming of the Messiah.
By welcoming sinners to the table already, Jesus was claiming that God’s reign had begun, and that he himself was the host at the banquet. No wonder, the Pharisees and religious leaders acted like the elder brother in the parable. They weren’t merely jealous of the folks with whom Jesus ate; they felt that the whole meal was premature and presumptuous.
But Jesus was telling them by what he did and the story he told, that God does not wait to forgive us. We are not doomed to remain in our sin until some special time. We don’t have to start being good.
All we have to be, is loved by God, and that is always, whether we know it or not, whether we accept it or not, or whether some like it or not.

Fr Grimm winds up his reflections with these words:
Lent is a time for me to come to my senses and return to my Father. I do not need fancy words. I do not need to buy forgiveness with good deeds or intentions. All I need to say, “Father, I have flunked.” Then we go out to share the Good News that God is waiting for the whole world to come to its senses, waiting to embrace it with the love that is always there for it.

In God there is no ‘before-after’ effect of sin. He ALWAYS forgives… Ever loving and forgiving, never tiring! Similar sentiments have been expressed by Pope Francis on quite a few occasions. In the very first Angelus message he gave in St Peter’s Square three days after being elected Pope, Francis said: “Never forget this: The Lord never gets tired of forgiving us. It is we, who get tired of asking for forgiveness!”

The Parable of the Prodigal Son (or Father) is a painful reminder to us of the estranged relationships that exist in our families. While reflecting on this famous parable, I was reminded of the short story "The Capital of the World", written by Ernest Hemingway.
In it, he told the story of a father and his teenage son who were estranged from one another.  The son’s name was Paco.  He had wronged his father.  As a result, in his shame, he had run away from home. In the story, the father searched all over Spain for Paco, but still he could not find the boy.  Finally, in the city of Madrid, in a last desperate attempt to find his son, the father placed an ad in the daily newspaper.  The ad read:  “PACO, MEET ME AT THE HOTEL MONTANA.  NOON TUESDAY.  ALL IS FORGIVEN.  PAPA”
The father in Hemingway's story prayed that the boy would see the ad; and then maybe, just maybe, he would come to the Hotel Montana.  On Tuesday, at noon, the father arrived at the hotel.  When he did, he could not believe his eyes. An entire squadron of police officers had been called out in an attempt to keep order among eight hundred young boys.  It turned out that each one of them was named Paco.  And each one of them had come to meet his respective father and find forgiveness in front of the Hotel Montana.
Eight hundred boys named Paco had read the ad in the newspaper and had hoped it was for them.  Eight hundred Pacos had come to receive the forgiveness they so desperately desired.

Hemingway’s story does not sound unique, since thousands… no, millions… of young men and women go through strained relationships with their parents. Many of those who leave home, reach various cities, with dreams of getting some security and future there. Unfortunately, for most of them, cities turn out to be more of a nightmare than a dream, a jungle rather than a home. We are painfully aware of the break in relationship among the different members of the family. Either they step out of the house and get lost in the crowds or, more painfully, they stay at home and decide to get lost from their loved ones.

Break in relationship is not the only reason for people disappearing from homes. There are so many other factors. In India, every year more than 50,000 children disappear from their families. Most of these are female children. In the UN Human Rights Commission has revealed many frightening facts and figures. It was reported that human trafficking of girl children seems to be thriving in 136 countries. Most of these children end up in brothels. The statistics is frightening. These statistics are not mere numbers tabulated on papers; but they are individuals who have left a painful vacuum in each family they belong to.

We began our reflections with a note on Laetare Sunday (Rejoicing Sunday); but we have ended up with a heavy heart due to the very disturbing trends in our human family. But we shall not end on such a note. Let us close our reflection on a bright note. Talking of female children brings to mind the International Women’s Day we shall be celebrating on March 8. We turn to Malala Yousafzai, the brave young lady from Pakistan who refused to cow down to the Taliban threats and wanted to ensure education for girl children. She refused to die when she was shot at and now lives on as an inspiration for millions of girl children. She said: “I don't want to be remembered as the girl who was shot. I want to be remembered as the girl who stood up.”

It is better to remember the Prodigal Son as the one who came back home and not as one who got lost!

இலக்கியத்தில் நொபெல் பரிசு வென்ற அமெரிக்க எழுத்தாளர் Ernest Hemingway அவர்கள் எழுதிய ‘The Capital of the World’ என்ற சிறுகதையில், இடம்பெறும் ஒரு நிகழ்வு இது:
பல நாட்கள் தேடியபின், ஒருநாள் செய்தித்தாளில் விளம்பரம் ஒன்று வெளியிட்டார்: “Paco, meet me at the Hotel Montana. Noon Tuesday. All is forgiven.

I don't want to be remembered as the girl who was shot. I want to be remembered as the girl who stood up.
