Let us begin our Sunday reflection with the dream sequence recorded in the first reading today.

At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.” And Solomon said, “O Lord my God, Give thy servant therefore an understanding mind to govern thy people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to govern this thy great people?” (I Kings 3: 5,7,9)

We shall add some imagination to this dream sequence. Imagine a Church where this Sunday’s Liturgy is celebrated. Many Presidents and Prime Ministers of the world are attending this Mass. When the First Reading is being read, let us imagine that we have access to the mind voice of these political bigwigs. If so, we can hear many of them saying something like this: “When God is offering a blank cheque, ‘Ask what I shall give you’, Solomon should have grabbed the opportunity to ask for a longer reign, great wealth, a long, healthy life and the utter defeat of all the enemies… But, Solomon asked for the inconsequential gift – wisdom! What a pathetic specimen of a king!” The world leaders in the Church would not have appreciated Solomon.

But, God appreciated Solomon in the following words: “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days.” (I Kgs. 3: 11-13)

A discerning mind not only differentiates between good and bad, but also chooses the best among the many good things on offer. This is the gift prayed for by Solomon. It is somewhat similar to the MAGIS spoken of by St Ignatius of Loyola (whose Feast is celebrated on Monday, July 31). Ignatius is also known for his very enlightening Rules for Discernment of Spirits, constantly discerning to do everything for the ‘greater glory of God’!

Of all the riches and treasures one can desire in this world, a discerning mind is a gift of the highest order. Today’s Gospel gives us an opportunity to think of the treasures that we bump into in our life’s journey. The parables of the hidden treasure in the field and the pearl of great value give us an opportunity to reflect on the treasures we receive from God.

Our first thoughts are on the words ‘treasure’ and ‘pearl’. Treasure usually refers to a valuable object we discover from the earth. Many times, this treasure is a precious stone like a diamond. When Jesus compares the treasure and the pearl to the kingdom of heaven, my mind was thinking of the ‘diamond’ and the ‘pearl’ as symbols of the Kingdom.

The way a ‘diamond’ and a ‘pearl’ are formed, gives us some clues about the characteristics of the Kingdom. Carbon molecules, under great pressure and temperature, become a diamond. I guess the higher the pressure and greater the temperature, the diamond formed, will be of greater value. Similarly, in our lives, the values of the kingdom tend to shine forth when great pressure and temperature affect us. The way a carbon molecule responds to pressure and temperature can be a lesson for us!

Turning our attention to the ‘pearl’, we find that when a foreign element – like a water drop – enters the oyster, it creates a protective shell around the ‘intruder’ and this turns out to be a pearl. This again shows how, when unwanted, uninvited elements creep into our lives, we need to make them into ‘pearls’. Thus the first lesson taught by a diamond and a pearl is that struggles bring out the best in us. Similarly, the Kingdom values are formed not in a cozy milieu, but more often amidst opposition.

Discovering these precious ‘treasures’ is an art. Not every one of us does this. ‘VALUE WHAT YOU HAVE’ is a lovely incident that tells us of how we fail to see the treasures that surround us:

The owner of a small business, a friend of the poet Olavo Bilac, met him on the street and asked him, “Mr Bilac, I need to sell my small farm, the one you know so well. Could you please write an announcement for me for the paper?”

Bilac wrote: “For sale: A beautiful property, where birds sing at dawn in extensive woodland, bisected by the brilliant and sparkling waters of a large stream. The house is bathed by the rising sun. If offers tranquil shade in the evenings on the veranda.”

Some time later, the poet met his friend and asked whether he had sold the property, to which he replied: “I’ve changed my mind when I read what you had written. I realised the treasure that was mine.”

Sometimes we underestimate the good things we have, chasing after the mirages of false treasures. We often see people letting go of their children, their families, their spouses, their friends, their profession, their knowledge accumulated over many years, their good health, the good things of life. They throw out what God has given them so freely, things which were nourished with so much care and effort.

Look around and appreciate what you have: your home, your loved ones, friends on whom you can really count, the knowledge you have gained, your good heath… and all the beautiful things of life that are truly your most precious treasure…

It is not enough to discover the ‘treasures’, but pay the price for them. The persons in today’s Gospel ‘sold all that they had’ in order to get the treasure and the pearl. This is possible only when we see the great value of the discovery we have made. The world today seems to define ‘value’ in terms of a price-tag. In the different translations of the parable of the pearl, two different phrases are used, namely, “a pearl of great value” and “a pearl of great price”. All values do not and should not have a ‘price-tag’. Unfortunately, this trend seems to dominate our social discourse. Our media seems to attach a price tag to everything, be it a natural calamity, a terrorist attack, an epidemic or the victory or defeat of a political leader. Due to this great emphasis on looking at all events of the world as market shares, we are driven to think in terms of what is ‘useful’ and ‘profitable’. This ‘commercial’ yardstick tends to measure even our relationships in these terms. From this perspective, senior persons, sick persons are ‘measured’ as of less or no value at all… Hence, they can be disposed, thrown away. Pope Francis keeps warning us quite often about this ‘throw-away’ culture that tends to blunt our conscience.

The worst form of our market-driven society is the rampant human trafficking that is taking place all over the world. This is the modern form of slavery. July 30, this Sunday, is observed as the ‘World Day against Trafficking in Persons’ by the U.N.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that 21 million people are victims of forced labour globally. This estimate also includes victims of human trafficking for labour and sexual exploitation… Every country in the world is affected by human trafficking… Children make up almost a third of all human trafficking victims worldwide, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Global Report on Trafficking in Persons. Additionally, women and girls comprise 71 per cent of human trafficking victims, the report states. (U.N. Report)

As we reflect on the parables of the treasure and the pearl, we pray that we may have the eyes and heart to discover the innumerable treasures God has stacked up inside and around us. May we become courageous enough to sacrifice everything we have in order to possess the values of the Kingdom! May we also see and ‘value’ other human beings as treasures and pearls – not with a ‘price-tag’, but with the sense of ‘preciousness’, since they are made in the image of God!

பொதுக்காலம் 17ம் ஞாயிறு

இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள ஒரு கனவு காட்சி, நம் ஞாயிறு சிந்தனையைத் துவக்கி வைக்கிறது:

1 அரசர்கள் 3: 5, 7,9

அன்றிரவு கிபயோனில் ஆண்டவர் சாலமோனுக்குக் கனவில் தோன்றினார். "உனக்கு என்ன வரம் வேண்டும் கேள்!" என்று கடவுள் கேட்டார். அதற்குச் சாலமோன், "என் கடவுளாகிய ஆண்டவரே, உம் மக்களுக்கு நீதி வழங்கவும், நன்மை தீமை பகுத்தறியவும் தேவையான, ஞானம் நிறைந்த உள்ளத்தை, அடியேனுக்குத் தந்தருளும்" என்று கேட்டார்.

இந்தக் கனவுக் காட்சியுடன் சிறிது கற்பனையைக் கலந்து, நம் சிந்தனைகளைத் துவக்குவோம். இன்றைய ஞாயிறு வழிபாடு நடைபெறும் ஆலயம் ஒன்றில், பல்வேறு நாடுகளின் அரசுத்தலைவர்கள் கலந்துகொள்வதாகக் கற்பனை செய்துகொள்வோம். அந்த வழிபாட்டில், இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம் வாசிக்கப்படும்போது, அங்கு அமர்ந்திருக்கும் தலைவர்களின் உள்ளங்களில், எவ்வகை எண்ணங்கள் ஓடியிருக்கும் என்று கற்பனை செய்து பார்க்கலாம். "உனக்கு என்ன வரம் வேண்டும் கேள்!" என்று கேட்கும் இறைவனிடம், தன் பதவிகால நீட்டிப்பு, அளவற்ற செல்வம், உடல்நலம், எதிர்கட்சிகளின் தோல்வி என்ற ‘முக்கியமான’ வரங்களைக் கேட்பதற்குப் பதில், ‘எதற்கும் உதவாத, தேவையற்ற’ வரமான ஞானத்தை வேண்டிக்கேட்ட மன்னன் சாலமோனை, ஆலயத்தில் அமர்ந்திருக்கும் தலைவர்கள், ‘பிழைக்கத்தெரியாத மனிதர்’ என்று, எண்ணி, தங்களுக்குள் ஏளனமாகச் சிரித்திருப்பர்.

சாலமோனின் இந்த வேண்டுதல், இறைவனை மகிழ்வுறச் செய்தது என்பதை, இன்றைய வாசகம், தெளிவாகக் கூறியுள்ளது.

1 அரசர்கள் 3: 10-13

சாலமோன் இவ்வாறு கேட்டது ஆண்டவருக்கு உகந்ததாய் இருந்தது. கடவுள் அவரிடம், "நீடிய ஆயுளையோ, செல்வத்தையோ நீ கேட்கவில்லை. உன் எதிரிகளின் சாவையும் நீ விரும்பவில்லை. மாறாக, நீதி வழங்கத் தேவையான ஞானத்தை மட்டுமே கேட்டிருக்கிறாய். இதோ! நான் இப்பொழுது, நீ கேட்டபடியே செய்கிறேன். உனக்கு நிகராக, உனக்கு முன்னே எவரும் இருந்ததில்லை. உனக்குப் பின்னே இருக்கப் போவதுமில்லை. அந்த அளவுக்கு ஞானமும் பகுத்தறிவும் நிறைந்த உள்ளத்தை உனக்கு வழங்குகிறேன். இன்னும் நீ கேளாத செல்வத்தையும் புகழையும் உனக்குத் தருவேன். ஆகையால் உன் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதிலும் உனக்கு இணையான அரசன் எவனும் இரான்" என்றார்.

பகுத்தறிவு என்பது, மனிதர்களுக்கு மட்டுமே வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ள தலைசிறந்த ஒரு கொடை. நன்மை, தீமை இவற்றை பகுத்து, பிரித்து அறிவது மட்டும் பகுத்தறிவு அல்ல, அதற்கும் மேலாக, நல்லவற்றிலும், மிக உயர்ந்தவற்றை தேர்ந்து தெளிவதே, உண்மையான பகுத்தறிவு, உண்மையான ஞானம். இத்தகைய ஓர் அறிவுத்திறனையே, சாலமோன், விரும்பி, வேண்டி, கேட்டுக்கொண்டார்.

நல்லவற்றிலும், மிக உயர்ந்தவற்றை தேர்ந்து தெளிய, தனிப்பட்ட மனநிலை தேவை. ஜூலை 31, இத்திங்களன்று, புனித லொயோலா இஞ்ஞாசியாரின் திருநாளைக் கொண்டாடவிருக்கிறோம். இப்புனிதர் வழங்கிய ஆன்மீக முயற்சிகளில், 'தேர்ந்து தெளிதல்' என்பது மிக முக்கியமான ஒரு பாதை. மேலும், "இறைவனின் அதிமிக மகிமைக்கே" என்பது, இப்புனிதர் வழங்கிய விருதுவாக்கு. இறைவனின் மகிமையை நிலைநாட்டுவது என்பதோடு நின்றுவிடாமல், இறைவனின் மகிமையை இன்னும் கூடுதலாக நிலைநாட்ட தேவையான மனநிலையைத் தருமாறு வேண்டினார், அப்புனிதர்.

MAGIS என்றழைக்கப்படும் “இன்னும் கூடுதலாக” என்ற மனநிலையை உருவாக்க, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறது. வாழ்வில் நம்மை வந்தடையும் நல்லவற்றிலும், மிகச் சிறந்தவற்றை கண்டுபிடித்து, அவற்றை உரிமையாக்கிக் கொள்ள, நம்மிடமுள்ள அனைத்தையும் தியாகம் செய்யும் மன உறுதி வேண்டும் என்பதையே, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி வலியுறுத்துகிறது.

இறையரசைத் தேடிக் கண்டுபிடித்தல், அதைப் பெறுவதற்கு, நம்மிடமுள்ள அனைத்தையும் தியாகம் செய்தல் என்ற கருத்துக்களை, மூன்று உவமைகள் வழியே இயேசு இன்று சொல்லித் தருகிறார். புதையல், முத்து, மீன்கள் நிறைந்த வலை என்ற இம்மூன்று உவமைகளில், நமது சிந்தனைகளை புதையல், முத்து என்ற இரு உவமைகள் பக்கம் திருப்புவோம்.

'புதையல்' என்ற சொல், பொதுவாக, பூமியிலிருந்து கிடைக்கும் அரியக் கருவூலங்களைக் குறிக்கும். இந்த அரியக் கருவூலங்களில் ஒன்றாக அடிக்கடிப் பேசப்படுவது, வைரம். வைரங்கள் எவ்விதம் உருவாகின்றன என்பதை ஆய்வு செய்தால், அது, இறையரசின்  பண்புகளைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள உதவும்.

பூமிக்கடியில் புதையுண்டு போகும் நிலக்கரி, அங்கு நிலவும் மிக உயர்ந்த அழுத்தம், மிக அதிக வெப்பநிலை ஆகியவற்றை, தனக்குச் சாதகமாக்கிக்கொண்டு, வைரமாக மாறுகின்றது. எவ்வளவுக்கெவ்வளவு அழுத்தமும், வெப்பமும் கூடுகிறதோ, அவ்வளவுக்கவ்வளவு, அங்கு உருவாகும் வைரமும், உயர்ந்த தரமுள்ளதாக மாறுகின்றது. அதேபோல்,  வாழ்வில் அழுத்தமும், வெப்பமும் கூடும் வேளைகளில், இறையரசின் விலைமதிப்பற்ற மதிப்பீடுகளைக் கொண்டு வாழும் வைரங்களாக நாமும் மாறமுடியும் என்பது, வைரமாகும் நிலக்கரி நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தரும் பாடம்.

அடுத்தது, நம் எண்ணங்கள் முத்தை நோக்கித் திரும்புகின்றன. ஆழ்கடலில் வாழும் சிப்பிக்குள் உருவாகும் அரியக் கருவூலம், முத்து. முத்து உருவாகும் விதம், இறையரசின் மற்றொரு பண்பை நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தருகிறது. வெளியிலிருந்து, சிப்பிக்குள் நுழையும் அன்னியத் துகளோ, துளியோ சிப்பிக்குள் மாற்றங்களை உருவாக்குகின்றன. உத்தரவின்றி உள்ளே நுழைந்துவிடும் வேற்றுப் பொருளைச் சுற்றி, சிப்பி உருவாக்கும் காப்புக் கவசமே, விலையேறப்பெற்ற முத்தாக மாறுகிறது. அதேபோல், நமது உள்ளங்களில், உத்தரவின்றி நுழையும் அன்னிய எண்ணங்களையும், கருத்துக்களையும், அழகிய முத்தாக மாற்றும் வலிமை பெற்றவர்கள் நாம் என்பதை, முத்து உவமையிலிருந்து கற்றுக்கொள்கிறோம்.

புதையல், முத்து என்ற சொற்களைக் கேட்டதும், அவற்றின் 'விலை' என்னவாக இருக்கும் என்று நாம் சிந்திக்க வாய்ப்புண்டு. வர்த்தக உலகம் நம்மீது திணித்திருக்கும் ஆபத்தான ஒரு கண்ணோட்டம் இது. இன்றைய உலகில், எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் விலை குறிக்கப்படுகிறது என்பது, மிகவும் வேதனையான நடைமுறை. எடுத்துக்காட்டாக, ஒரு நாட்டை புயல், வெள்ளம், சூறாவளி என்ற இயற்கைச் சீற்றங்கள் தாக்கும்போது, அவற்றால் ஏற்படும் உயிர்ச் சேதங்களைப் பற்றிப் பேசும் அதே மூச்சில், அந்த இயற்கைப் பேரிடரால் உருவான அழிவுகள் இவ்வளவு மில்லியன் டாலர்கள் என்ற கணக்கும் பேசப்படுகிறது. நாட்டில் நிகழும் விபத்து, தீவிரவாதிகளின் தாக்குதல், கொள்ளை நோய், வறட்சி என்ற அனைத்தும், பணத்தின் அடிப்படையில் மதிப்பிடப்படுகின்றன. அதேபோல், ஒரு நாட்டில், ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட தலைவர், தேர்தலில் வென்றாலோ, தோற்றாலோ, அதுவும், பங்குச்சந்தை குறியீட்டைக் கொண்டு பேசப்படுகிறது.

இவ்விதம் உலக நிகழ்வுகள் அனைத்திற்கும் விலை நிர்ணயிக்கப்படுவதால், நமது எண்ண ஓட்டங்கள், வர்த்தகப் பாணியிலேயே அதிகம் செல்கின்றன. இந்நிகழ்வுகளின்போது வெளிப்படும் மனிதாபிமானம், பிறரன்புப் பணிகள், தியாகங்கள் போன்ற இறையரசின் உன்னத விழுமியங்கள் அதிகம் பேசப்படுவதில்லை.

வர்த்தக உலகின் அளவுகோல்களைக் கொண்டு, வாழ்வின் அனைத்து உண்மைகளையும் அளக்கும்போது, அங்கு, இலாபம், நஷ்டம் என்ற கேள்விகள் எழுகின்றன. உபயோகமானவை, உபயோகமற்றவை என்று தரம் பிரிக்கப்படுகின்றன. இந்தக் கண்ணோட்டத்தின் மிகக் கொடூரமான வெளிப்பாடு, மனித வர்த்தகம்.

ஜூலை 30, இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று, மனித வர்த்தகத்திற்கு எதிரான உலக நாள் கடைபிடிக்கப்படுகின்றது. எதையும் விலைப்பேசத் துடிக்கும் வர்த்தக மனப்பான்மை நம்மிடையே வளர்ந்துவிட்டதால், மனிதர்கள், குறிப்பாக, பெண்களும், குழந்தைகளும் வர்த்தகப் பொருள்களாக மாறியுள்ளனர். உலகெங்கும் இன்று 2 கோடிக்கும் அதிகமானோர், வியாபாரப் பொருள்களைப்போல் விற்கப்படுகின்றனர். இவர்களில் 76 விழுக்காட்டினர், பெண்கள், மற்றும் சிறுவர், சிறுமியர். அநீதியான இச்சூழல் மாறி, மனிதர்களை, மதிப்பு நிறைந்த கருவூலங்களாக, முத்துக்களாக கருதும் மனநிலையை நாம் வளர்த்துக்கொள்ள இன்று இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுவோம்.

புதையல், முத்து, இவற்றின் மதிப்பை உணர்ந்த இருவர், தங்களிடம் இருந்த அனைத்தையும் கொடுத்து அவற்றைப் பெற்றனர் என்று இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் கேட்கும்போது, உன்னதமானவற்றை நாம் பெறுவதற்கு, அனைத்தையும் தியாகம் செய்யும் துணிவு வேண்டும் என்பதை உணர்கிறோம். இலாப, நஷ்டம் பார்த்து, அனைத்தையும் பேரம் பேசி வாழும் இவ்வுலகப் போக்கிலிருந்து விடுதலை பெற்று, இத்தகையத் துணிச்சலான முடிவை எடுப்பதற்கு இறைவன் வழிகாட்ட வேண்டும்.

உள்ளார்ந்த உண்மை மதிப்பை உணர்ந்தால், அதற்காக எதையும் இழக்க நாம் துணிவு கொள்வோம். பெரும்பாலான நேரங்களில் நமக்குள்ளும், நம் குடும்ப உறவுகளிலும் புதைந்துள்ள விலைமதிப்பற்ற முத்துக்களை, வைரங்களை உணராமல், நாம் வாழ்ந்து வருகிறோம். கருவூலங்களைக் கண்டுகொள்ளாமல் வாழும் நம்மை விழித்தெழச் செய்யும் சிறு கதை இது:

பல ஆண்டுகள், ஊரில், ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட இடத்தில், அமர்ந்து தர்மம் கேட்டு வாழ்ந்தவர், ஒருநாள் இறந்தார். அவர் இறந்ததும், ஊர் மக்கள் ஒன்று கூடி, அவர் தர்மம் கேட்டு வந்த இடத்திலேயே அவரைப் புதைக்கத் தீர்மானித்தனர். அவர்கள் புதை குழியைத் தோண்டியபோது, அவர் அமர்ந்திருந்த அந்த இடத்தில் விலைமதிப்பற்ற ஒரு புதையல் இருந்ததைக் கண்டனர்.

புதையலுக்கு மேல் அமர்ந்துகொண்டு, வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் தர்மம் கேட்ட இவரைப் போலத்தான் நாமும்... நமக்குள் புதைந்திருக்கும், நம்மைச் சூழ்ந்திருக்கும் எத்தனையோ கருவூலங்களைப் புரிந்துகொள்ளாமல், உலகம் உருவாக்கித்தரும் பொய்யான மதிப்பீடுகளைத் துரத்திச் செல்வதால், வாழ்வின் பெரும் பகுதியை, நேரத்தை, சக்தியை நாம் வீணாக்குகிறோம். பல வேளைகளில், இந்தப் பொய்யான மாயைகளை அடைவதற்கு நம்மிடம் உண்மையாய் இருப்பனவற்றை விலை பேசுகிறோம். நம் குடும்பம், தொழில், நண்பர்கள் என்று, நம்மிடம் உள்ள புதையல்களை, முத்துக்களை இழந்துவிட்டு, பின்னர் வருந்துகிறோம்.

இறைவன், நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் வழங்கியுள்ள புதையலையும், முத்தையும் அடையாளம் காணும் தெளிவை, இறைவன் நமக்கு வழங்க மன்றாடுவோம். நாம் அடையாளம் கண்ட கருவூலங்களைப் பெறுவதற்கு, அல்லது, தக்கவைத்துக் கொள்வதற்கு, எத்தகையத் தியாகத்தையும் செய்யும் துணிவையும் இறைவன் நமக்கு வழங்கவேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம்.

நம்மைச் சுற்றி வாழ்வோரை, வர்த்தகப் பொருள்களாகக் காணாமல், அவர்களை, விலைமதிப்புக்களையெல்லாம் கடந்த இறைவனின் சாயல்களாகக் காணும் கண்ணோட்டத்தை இறைவன் வழங்கவேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம்.
