Feast of the Epiphany

We begin with a story from a collection of the lives of saints - the saints of Islam - which concerns a king of Balkh, named Ebrahim ibn Adam. Ebrahim was wealthy according to every earthly measure. At the same time, however, he sincerely and restlessly strove to be wealthy spiritually as well. One night the king was roused from sleep by a fearful stumping on the roof above his bed. Alarmed, he shouted: 'Who's there?' 'A friend,' came the reply from the roof. 'I've lost my camel.' Perturbed by such stupidity, Ebrahim screamed: 'You fool! Are you looking for a camel on the roof?' 'You fool!' the voice from the roof answered. 'Are you looking for God in silk clothing, and lying on a golden bed?'” Those simple words filled the king with such enlightenment, that he arose from his sleep to become a remarkable saint.

Being clothed in silk and lying on a golden bed are not the most apt modes to search for God. Today’s Feast - the Feast of the Epiphany - helps us to learn some basic lessons on how to search for God. Although this Feast is mainly about Jesus revealing himself to the whole world, still, popularly, the main characters of this feast are the so called ‘Magi’. Very little is known about these persons (Kings? Wise men? Astrologers?) in the Bible. Only Matthew’s Gospel (Matthew 2: 1-12) talks about these persons. But, their effort in following the star has inspired countless men and women to ‘follow the star’ in their lives.

Following a star is possible only at night. Stars are not visible during the day. This means that these wise men must have done most of their journey at night – not an easy option given their mode of transport etc. It must have been very difficult to gaze upon one little star among the hundreds, on a clear sky. What if the sky was not clear? Then they would have to wait until clouds and mist clear. So, their journey must have taken nights… many nights. Still, they persisted. What a resolve! Resolutions are part and parcel of every New Year! What better way to begin the New Year with the feast of ‘the wise men’ who can be honoured as ‘patrons of resolutions’!

Nowadays, the phrase ‘following a star’ is, unfortunately, misinterpreted as following a star-personality. In India, more unfortunately, we have too many of these stars, especially in the cine field and in cricket. The amount of time wasted on these stars is staggering as far as an Indian fan is concerned. By the time these fans learn that ‘following these stars’ lead them nowhere, it is rather too late. If only the typical Indian fan can take a new year resolution to treat cinema and cricket as only entertainments!

Recently, in Tamil Nadu, India, one of the ‘stars’ declared his intentions of starting a party and contesting the state assembly election next time. This ‘star’ has been talking about his entry into politics for the past twenty years. Now, (I feel like adding, unfortunately) he has made his intentions clear. While his fans have celebrated, many others have condemned this move.

Tamil Nadu has been the victim of ‘stars’ for the past forty years. Now another ‘star’ has come forward to lead the people. We pray that the people of Tamil Nadu, especially the youth, may wake up from the spell of ‘stars’!

The Gospel of Matthew (2: 1-12) says that these wise men were from the East. They were probably experts in astrology – namely, the study of stars. Hence, when they saw this new star, they were able to predict the birth of a King. Their study led them further. They decided to follow the star and meet the King.

Unfortunately, there are some experts who are king-makers by studying the star in which one is born. In general, most of the political leaders in Asia seem to trust their stars rather than trust their people. Naturally, people also don’t seem to trust them!

Why blame political leaders, who have only one aim in their life – to stay in power? Most of us abdicate our power to the stars attached to our birth. What these stars predict each week, tends to influence our decisions to a large extent. Should we allow stars and planets to influence our lives so much? We set aside time to read ‘stars foretell’ columns in the papers. But, how many of us have the time to look up at the sky and contemplate the beauty of the stars?

For us living in the 21st century, there seems to be no time to look to the heavens to gaze upon stars. We are dazzled and even blinded by too many artificial stars and hence real stars have receded from our view. We hardly look up. Or, possibly, we look up to the skies only when dark clouds gather. We look up to the skies with a question: Will it rain? Similarly, when dark clouds gather in our hearts, we again look up to the skies with the famous clichéd question: Is there a God up there?

Doubts drive us to look up, whether they are doubts about rain or pain.

When the wise men followed the star, doubts were raging in their hearts too. But, they were driven more by desire than by doubts and hence could reach their destination. This alone is reason enough to celebrate! For our generation where patience and persistence seem to have become obsolete words, the wise men have a lot to teach!

The story of the three wise men has inspired quite many other stories. One of them is “THE STORY OF THE OTHER WISE MAN” written by Henry van Dyke. The name of this ‘fourth’ wise man is Artaban. He wishes to join the three wise men. He sells all his properties and buys a sapphire, a ruby and a pearl as gifts to the King. As he begins his journey, he meets with a Jew who is very sick. He stays with him and ministers to his needs. In order to make up for the delay, he sells his sapphire to buy camels to cross the desert. When he reaches Bethlehem, he learns that his friends – the three wise men – had already left back to their countries. He also learns that the Child Jesus has been taken to Egypt. On his way to Egypt, he comes across the army of Herod who are slaughtering children. In order to save one of those children, he gives away the ruby.

Artaban’s search for the King takes 33 years. At last when he reaches Jerusalem, he hears of Jesus being led away to Calvary to be crucified. He wants to give away the pearl to the soldiers and rescue Jesus from their hands. On his way to Calvary, he comes across a slave girl being led away to be sold. He parts with the pearl as a ransom for the girl. At that moment there is an earth quake!

Here are the closing lines of this lovely story:

One more lingering pulsation of the earthquake quivered through the ground. A heavy tile, shaken from the roof, fell and struck the old man on the temple. He lay breathless and pale, with his gray head resting on the young girl's shoulder, and the blood trickling from the wound. As she bent over him, fearing that he was dead, there came a voice through the twilight, very small and still, like music sounding from a distance, in which the notes are clear but the words are lost. The girl turned to see if some one had spoken from the window above them, but she saw no one.

Then the old man's lips began to move, as if in answer, and she heard him say in the Parthian tongue: "Not so, my Lord! For when saw I thee a hungered, and fed thee? Or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw I thee a stranger, and took thee in? Or naked, and clothed thee? When saw I thee sick or in prison, and came unto thee? Three-and-thirty years have I looked for thee; but I have never seen thy face, nor ministered to thee, my King."

He ceased, and the sweet voice came again. And again the maid heard it, very faintly and far away. But now it seemed as though she understood the words: "Verily I say unto thee, inasmuch as thou hast done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, thou hast done it unto me."

A calm radiance of wonder and joy lighted the pale face of Artaban like the first ray of dawn on a snowy mountain-peak. One long, last breath of relief exhaled gently from his lips. His journey was ended. His treasures were accepted. The other Wise Man had found the King.

The FOUR wise men – our heroes of today’s liturgy – looked beyond dark clouds and followed the star. May the good Lord plant a star in our life’s firmament, a star that would lead us to the Lord’s presence day after day in this New Year!

பல நூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன், ஆப்கானிஸ்தானின் வடபகுதியில், பால்க் (Balkh) நாட்டை ஆட்சி செய்த மன்னர் இப்ராகிம், அளவற்ற செல்வங்களால் சூழப்பட்டிருந்தார். அதேவேளை, அவர், ஆன்மீக உண்மைகளைக் காணும் முயற்சியில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்தார்.

ஒருநாள் இரவு, பட்டாடை அணிந்து, தங்கக் கட்டிலில் படுத்தவண்ணம், கடவுளைப்பற்றி சிந்தித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார், மன்னர். அப்போது, அரண்மனையின் கூரையில் யாரோ நடந்து செல்வதுபோல் சப்தம் கேட்டது. அரசர் உடனே, "யாரங்கே?" என்று கத்தினார். "உங்கள் நண்பன்" என்று, கூரையிலிருந்து பதில் வந்தது.

"இந்த இரவு நேரத்தில் என் கூரைமீது என்ன செய்துகொண்டிருக்கிறாய்?" என்று மன்னர் எரிச்சலுடன் கேட்க, "தொலைந்துபோன என் ஒட்டகத்தைத் தேடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்" என்று பதில் வந்தது.

பைத்தியக்காரத்தனமான இந்தப் பதிலைக் கேட்டு, மேலும் எரிச்சலடைந்த மன்னர், "முட்டாளே! தொலைந்துபோன ஒட்டகத்தை, என் கூரைமீது தேடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறாயா?" என்று ஏளனமாகக் கேட்டார். உடனே, "முட்டாளே! பட்டாடை அணிந்து, தங்கக்கட்டிலில் படுத்துக்கொண்டு, நீ கடவுளைத் தேடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறாயா?" என்ற கேள்வி கூரையிலிருந்து ஒலித்தது.

பட்டாடை அணிந்து, தங்கக்கட்டிலில் படுத்துக்கொண்டு, இறைவனைத் தேடுவது கடினம். இறைவனைத் தேடிக் கண்டுபிடிக்க, கடினமான, ஆபத்தான பயணங்களை மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டியிருக்கும். இந்த உண்மையை உணர்த்தும் திருநாளை, இன்று நாம் கொண்டாடுகிறோம்.

புத்தாண்டின் முதல் ஞாயிறன்று நாம் கொண்டாடும் திருக்காட்சிப் பெருவிழா, இறைவனைத் தேடிக் கண்டடையும் வழிகளை நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தருகிறது. மூன்று இராசாக்கள், மூன்று செல்வந்தர்கள், மூன்று ஞானிகள் என்று பலவாறாக அழைக்கப்படும் நமது விழா நாயகர்கள், கடினமான ஒரு பயணத்தின் இறுதியில், கடவுளைக் கண்டனர். இந்த மூன்று ஞானிகள் இயேசுவைச் சந்திக்க வந்த நிகழ்வை, பல கோணங்களில் சிந்திக்கலாம். விண்மீன்களின் ஒளியில் இந்த ஞானிகள் நடந்தனர் என்றும், இறைவனைச் சந்தித்தபின் இந்த ஞானிகள் வேறு வழியாகச் சென்றனர் என்றும் நற்செய்தி சொல்கிறது. நம் வாழ்க்கையை வழிநடத்தும் விண்மீன்கள் எவை என்பதை முதலில் சிந்திக்கலாம். விண்மீன்களின் துணையோடு, இறைவனைச் சந்தித்தபின் நாம் பின்பற்றவேண்டிய மாற்று வழிகளைப்பற்றி சிந்திக்கலாம்.

விண்மீன்களைக் கண்டு பயணம் மேற்கொண்ட இந்த ஞானிகளைப்பற்றி இன்றைய நற்செய்தி சொல்லும் மற்றுமொரு விவரம்: "கிழக்கிலிருந்து வந்த ஞானிகள்." இந்த ஞானிகள், ஆசியாவிலிருந்து, ஆப்ரிக்காவிலிருந்து வந்தவர்கள் என்றும், கோள்களை, நட்சத்திரங்களை ஆய்வுசெய்த அறிஞர்கள் என்றும், சில விவிலிய விரிவுரையாளர்கள் விளக்கமளித்துள்ளனர்.

உலகின் பல நாடுகளில், கோள்களை, நட்சத்திரங்களை, வைத்து, பல முடிவுகள் எடுக்கப்படுவதை நினைத்துப் பார்க்கலாம்.  கோள்களையும், நட்சத்திரங்களையும், வாழ்க்கையின் வழிகாட்டிகள் என்று நம்பி, நம்மையும், நம் குடும்பங்களையும், சில வேளைகளில், நாட்டையும் வழிநடத்தும் பொறுப்பை, நட்சத்திரங்களிடம் விட்டுவிடுகிறோமா என்ற ஆய்வை, ஆண்டின் துவக்கத்தில் மேற்கொள்வது நல்லது. கோள்களையும், நட்சத்திரங்களையும் நம்பி வாழ்வதற்குப் பதில், கொள்கைகளையும், நன்மையின் ஊற்றான இறைவனையும் நம்பி வாழ்வது எவ்வளவோ மேல் என்பதை, இந்தத் திருவிழா நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தருகிறது.

இந்த மூன்று ஞானிகள், விண்மீன் வழியே வந்த அழைப்பை ஏற்று, இறைவனைத் தேடி, பயணத்தை மேற்கொண்டனர். விண்மீன் இரவில் மட்டுமே கண்ணுக்குத் தெரியும். பகலில் தெரியாது. எனவே, இந்த ஞானிகள், இரவில் தங்கள் பயணத்தை அதிகம் செய்திருக்க வேண்டும். போக்குவரத்து வசதிகள் அதிகம் இல்லாத காலத்தில், இரவில் மேற்கொள்ளும் பயணங்கள் எளிதல்ல. பல இரவுகள், மேகங்களும், பனிமூட்டமும் அந்த விண்மீனை மறைத்திருக்கும். அந்த நேரங்களில், மேகமும், பனியும் விலகும் வரைக் காத்திருந்து, மீண்டும் விண்மீனைப் பார்த்து, எத்தனை எத்தனை இரவுகள் அவர்கள் நடந்திருக்க வேண்டும்? இத்தனை இடர்பாடுகள் மத்தியிலும் ஒரே குறிக்கோளுடன், பல்லாயிரம் மைல்கள் பயணம் செய்த அந்த ஞானிகளின் மன உறுதி நமக்கெல்லாம் நல்லதொரு பாடம்.

நாம் வாழும் அவசர உலகில், விண்மீன்களைப் பார்ப்பது மிகவும் அரிது. நம்மில் பலர் வாழ்வது நகரங்கள் என்பதால், அங்கு இரவும் பகலும் எரியும் செயற்கை விளக்குகளின் ஒளி, விண்மீன்களை மறைத்துவிடுகின்றது. வானத்தை நிமிர்ந்து பார்க்கக்கூட நமக்கு இப்போது நேரமில்லை. எப்போது வானத்தைப் பார்ப்போம்? மேகங்கள் திரண்டு வரும்போது, "ஒருவேளை மழை வருமோ?" என்ற சந்தேகப் பார்வையோடு வானத்தைப் பார்ப்போம்.

கருமேகம் சூழும்போது, சந்தேகத்தோடு நிமிர்ந்து வானத்தைப் பார்க்க பழகிவிட்ட நாம், உள்ளத்தில் கருமேகங்கள் சூழும்போதும், கடவுள் என்ற ஒருவர் இருக்கிறாரா என்பதைத் தெரிந்துகொள்ள, மீண்டும் வானத்தைச் சந்தேகத்தோடு பார்க்கிறோம். சந்தேகம் என்பது, கறுப்புக் கண்ணாடி போன்றது. கறுப்புக் கண்ணாடியை அணிந்து கொண்டால், பார்ப்பது எல்லாமே கருமையாகத்தானே தெரியும். சந்தேகம் வரும்போது மட்டும் வானத்தைப் பார்த்தால், அங்கே கருமேகங்கள் மட்டுமே தெரியும். அந்தக் கருமேகங்களுக்குப் பின் கண்சிமிட்டும் விண்மீன்கள் தெரியாது. அந்த விண்மீன்கள் கொடுக்கும் அழைப்பும் நமக்குப் புரியாது.

நட்சத்திரங்கள், ‘ஸ்டார்’கள் என்ற சொல், மனதில் ஒருசில எண்ணங்களை ஏற்படுத்துகின்றது. இந்தியாவில், குறிப்பாக, தமிழகத்தில், திரை உலகில் பல 'ஸ்டார்'களை உருவாக்கி, கடவுளுக்கு இணையான ஓர் இடத்தை அவர்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கும் பல்லாயிரம் இளையோரை இந்நேரத்தில் எண்ணிப்பார்க்கத் தோன்றுகிறது. இந்த ‘ஸ்டார்’களின் செயற்கை ஒளியை, உண்மை ஒளியென்று நம்பி, அதைச்சுற்றி வட்டமிட்டு, தங்கள் வாழ்வை அழித்துக்கொள்ளும் விட்டில் பூச்சிகளாக வாழும் இரசிகர்களை நினைத்து வேதனையாய் இருக்கிறது.

தமிழ் திரையுலகில் 'ஸ்டார்'ஆக வலம்வரும் ஒரு நடிகர், அரசியலில் நுழையப் போவதாக அண்மையில் அறிவித்துள்ளார். இந்தச் செய்தியைக் கேட்டு, கொண்டாடியவர்களும் உண்டு, திண்டாடியவர்களும் உண்டு. தமிழகத்தின் அரசியல், கடந்த பல ஆண்டுகள், திரையுலகத்தினர் கரங்களில் சிக்கி, சின்னாபின்னமாகியுள்ளது என்பது வேதனை நிறைந்த உண்மை. தமிழகத்தை வழிநடத்த தகுதியான தலைவர்கள் இல்லாதச் சூழலில், திரையுலகைச் சேர்ந்த இன்னும் ஒருவர் தலைவராக விரும்புவது, தமிழகத்தை தலைநிமிரச் செய்யுமா என்பது, பெரும் கேள்விக்குறிதான். 'ஸ்டார்'களை நம்பி, தங்கள் வாழ்வை அடகு வைக்கும் இரசிகர்கள், குறிப்பாக, இளையோர், தங்கள் மயக்கத்திலிருந்து விழித்தெழவேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம்.

மத்தேயு நற்செய்தியில் நாம் காணும் மூன்று ஞானிகளின் கதை, வேறு பல அழகான கற்பனைக் கதைகளுக்கு வித்திட்டுள்ளது. அவற்றில் ஒன்று, Henry Van Dyke அவர்கள் எழுதிய “The Other Wise Man”, அதாவது, “மற்றுமொரு ஞானி” என்ற கதை. இந்தக் கதையில் வரும் ஞானியின் பெயர், ஆர்த்தபான் (Artaban). தான் சந்திக்கச் செல்லும் மன்னனுக்குப் பரிசுகள் ஏந்திச்செல்ல நினைத்த ஆர்த்தபான் அவர்கள், தன் சொத்துக்கள் அனைத்தையும் விற்று, விலையுயர்ந்த மாணிக்கம், வைரம், முத்து ஆகியவற்றை வாங்கிக்கொண்டார்.

அவர் செல்லும் வழியில், நோயுற்று சாகும் நிலையிலிருந்த ஒரு யூதரைப் பார்த்தார். நோயாளியை விட்டுவிட்டு, தன் பயணத்தைத் தொடர அவர் நினைத்தார். ஆனால் மனம் இடம் தரவில்லை. தன்னிடம் இருந்த மாணிக்கத்தை விற்று, அந்தப் பணத்தைக்கொண்டு நோயாளிக்குத் தேவையான உதவிகளைச் செய்தார். இதனால், அவரது பயணம் கொஞ்சம் தாமதமானது.

அவர் பெத்லகேமை அடைந்தபோது, மற்ற மூன்று ஞானிகளும் மீண்டும் தங்கள் நாட்டுக்குப் போய்விட்டதை அறிந்தார். அதைவிட, பெரும் ஏமாற்றம்... குழந்தை இயேசுவை அவரது பெற்றோர் எகிப்துக்குக் கொண்டு சென்றுவிட்டனர் என்ற செய்திதான். ஆர்த்தபான் அவர்கள், எகிப்து நோக்கி தன் பயணத்தைத் துவக்கியபோது, மன்னன் ஏரோதின் படைவீரர்கள், பெத்லகேம் குழந்தைகளைக் கொல்வதற்கு வருவதைப் பார்த்தார். தன்னிடம் இருந்த வைரத்தை, படைத் தளபதியிடம் கொடுத்து, ஒரு குழந்தையை அவர் காப்பாற்றினார்.

பின்னர், 33 ஆண்டுகள் தனது மன்னனைத் தேடி பல இடங்களில் அலைந்தார் ஆர்த்தபான். சென்ற இடமெல்லாம், தன்னால் இயன்ற அளவு, பிறருக்கு உதவிகள் செய்து வந்தார். இறுதியில் அவர் எருசலேம் வந்து சேர்ந்தார். அங்கு, இயேசுவைச் சிலுவையில் அறைவதற்கு ஏற்கனவே கல்வாரிக்குக் கொண்டு சென்றுவிட்டனர் என்று கேள்விப்பட்டார். தன் கையில் எஞ்சியிருந்த விலையுயர்ந்த முத்தை, உரோமைய வீரர்களிடம் கொடுத்து, இயேசுவை மீட்டுவிடலாம் என்ற தீர்மானத்துடன், கல்வாரி நோக்கி விரைந்தார். போகும் வழியில், அடிமையாக விற்பதற்கென்று ஒரு பெண் இழுத்துச் செல்லப்படுவதைக் கண்டார், ஆர்த்தபான். அப்பெண்ணை விடுவிக்க, தன்னிடம் இருந்த கடைசி பரிசான அந்த முத்தையும் கொடுத்தார்.

அந்நேரத்தில், திடீரென இருள் சூழ்ந்தது. நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது. ஆர்த்தபான் அவர்கள், தலையில் அடிபட்டு கீழே விழுந்தார். அப்போது, அவருக்கு மட்டும் கேட்கும் வகையில், "இந்தச் சிறியவர்களுள் ஒருவருக்கு நீர் இதைச் செய்யும்போது, எனக்கேச் செய்தீர்" என்ற குரல் கேட்டது. இக்குரலைக் கேட்டதும், தான் தேடி வந்த அரசனைக் கண்டுகொண்ட மகிழ்வோடு, நிறைவோடு ஆர்த்தபான் அவர்கள் கண்களை மூடினார்.

மனதுக்கு நிறைவைத்தரும் ஒரு கதை இது. விண்மீன் தந்த அழைப்பை ஏற்று, பயணம் புறப்பட்டவர்களெல்லாம் கடவுளை நேரில் கண்டனரா? இல்லையே. எத்தனையோ பேர், கடவுளை நேரில் காணாதபோதும், அந்தக் கடவுளின் நியதிகளை வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் பின்பற்றினர். இதனால், அவர்களில் பலர், மற்றவர்களை, கடவுளிடம் அழைத்துச்சென்ற வின்மீண்களாயினர் என்பதை, ஆர்த்தபான் அவர்களின் கதை நமக்குப் புரிய வைக்கிறது.

விண்மீன் காட்டிய பாதையில் சென்று, இறைவனைக் கண்டதால், தங்கள் வாழ்க்கைப் பாதையையே மாற்றிய ஞானிகளைப்போல், ஆர்த்தபானைப் போல், எத்தனையோ நல்ல உள்ளங்கள் தங்களையும், உலகத்தையும் மாற்றியிருக்கிறார்கள். உறுதியான உள்ளத்துடன் விண்மீன்களைத் தொடர்ந்து, இறைவனைக் கண்ட ஞானிகளைப் போல், இப்புத்தாண்டின் துவக்கத்தில், நாமும் இறைவனைக் காணவும், அவரிடம் மற்றவர்களை அழைத்துவரும் விண்மீன்களாய்த் மாறவும், தேவையான இறையருளை வேண்டுவோம்.
