The Feast of the Epiphany

Many of us are familiar with one of the stars of ‘Star Wars’ series - Sir Alec Guinness. Here are some interesting information on his ‘conversion’ to the Catholic faith, given in the web journal – Catholic Culture: Alec Guinness was born in London in 1914 to Agnes Cuffe, an unmarried woman who cared for him in a haphazard manner. At the age of sixteen, Guinness was confirmed in the Anglican faith, but he secretly declared himself an atheist.

Guinness left school at eighteen and went to work as a copywriter for an advertising agency. His career as a copywriter was a failure, so he turned to the stage, realizing an attraction he had since childhood…

Father Brown is the drab and delightful Catholic priest invented by G. K. Chesterton. One of Guinness's most memorable characterizations was of this humble, crime-solving cleric. The film was being shot in a remote French village. One evening Guinness, still in costume, was on his way back to his lodgings. A little boy, mistaking him for the real thing, grabbed his hand and trustingly accompanied the "priest."

That incident affected Guinness. "Continuing my walk," he said, "I reflected that a Church that could inspire such confidence in a child, making priests, even when unknown, so easily approachable, could not be as scheming or as creepy as so often made out. I began to shake off my long-taught, long-absorbed prejudices."

The article then goes on to describe how Matthew, the son of Guinness, was cured of his polio, due to prayers made by Guinness. Finally, Alec Guinness, his wife Merula and son Matthew became Catholics.

This article was titled : How Father Brown Led Sir Alec Guinness to the Church. I wish to change the title as : How a little boy Led Sir Alec Guinness to the Church.

This innocent little child who grabbed the hands of ‘Father Brown’ was the star that led Alec Guinness to God and finally to Catholicism. There is no mention of who the boy is. That is the beauty of stars. They shine on us and guide us in our ‘adventures of life’ and vanish from the scene without leaving their ‘visiting cards’!

We can surely recollect the many ‘stars’ (unknown persons and unexpected events) that flashed across our darkened skies, to lead us out of darkness and then… vanished into thin air! We are invited to celebrate these ‘stars’ this Sunday – when we celebrate the wise men who, led by a star, came to Bethlehem! This is also called the Feast of the Epiphany – the Feast of God’s Manifestation.  

Last Sunday we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Family. This Sunday we are celebrating God’s extended family. Yes… this is the core message of the Feast of the Epiphany. This Feast tells us one basic truth about God. God is not a private property of any human group. As far as God is concerned, the larger the family, the better… the more, the merrier!

This idea must have shocked quite a few orthodox Jews. They were very sure that THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE GOD was theirs, EXCLUSIVELY. God must have laughed at this idea; but in His/Her parental love, waited for the opportune time. By inviting the wise men from the East to visit the Divine Babe at Bethlehem, God had broken the myth of exclusivism!

God cannot be the exclusive ‘property’ of any human group. This message is still very relevant to us, especially in the light of all the divisions created by various individuals and groups who have used God and religion as political weapons. God is surely not party to any divisive force! Unifying, reconciling… these are God’s ways. Let us pray on the Feast of the Epiphany that the whole human family may live together as one inclusive, divine family.

Let us pray in a special way for the people in India who will be involved in the General Election this year. We pray that the people of India may not be led astray by the politicians who will be using religion, language, caste etc., to divide the people in order to gain their votes!

Although this Feast is mainly about Jesus revealing himself to the whole world (that’s the Epiphany), still, popularly, this feast is about the so called ‘Magi’. Very little information is given about these persons (Kings? Wise men? Astrologers?) in the Bible. Only Matthew’s Gospel talks about these persons (Matthew 2: 1-12). Matthew simply introduces them as ‘wise men from the East’. There is not even a mention of the number. Tradition has made them not only Kings, but also made them THREE KINGS because in Matthew’s gospel three gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh) have been mentioned. Keeping this traditional point of view, we can say that today’s gospel talks of FOUR kings – three from the East and one, residing in Jerusalem, namely, Herod.

Fr Ron Rolheisser makes a lovely observation on these four persons.

The wise men follow the star, find the new king, and, upon seeing him, place their gifts at his feet. What happens to them afterwards? We have all kinds of apocryphal stories about their journey back home, but these, while interesting, are not helpful. We do not know what happened to them afterwards and that is exactly the point. Their slipping away into anonymity is a crucial part of their gift. The idea is that they now disappear because they can now disappear. They have placed their gifts at the feet of the young king and can now leave everything safely in his hands. His star has eclipsed theirs. Far from fighting for their former place, they now happily cede it to him. Like old Simeon, they can happily exit the stage singing: Now, Lord, you can dismiss your servants! We can die! We're in safe hands!

And Herod, how much to the contrary! The news that a new king has been born threatens him at his core since he is himself a king. The glory and light that will now shine upon the new king will no longer shine on him. So what is his reaction? Far from laying his resources at the feet of the new king, he sets out to kill him. Moreover, to ensure that his murderers find him, he kills all the male babies in the entire area. An entire book on anthropology might be written about this last line. Fish are not the only species that eats its young! But the real point is the contrast between the wise men and Herod: The former see new life as promise and they bless it; the latter sees new life as threat and he curses it.

When the wise men decided to follow the star, they must have faced quite many questions and ridicules. But, they did not give up. Their journey must have been torturous. Following a star is possible only at night. Stars are not visible during the day. This means that these wise men must have done most of their journey in the night – not an easy option given their mode of transport etc. It must have been very difficult to gaze upon one little star among the hundreds on a clear sky. What if the sky was not clear? Then they would have to wait until clouds and mist clear. So, their journey must have taken nights, many nights. Relentlessly they pursued their decision to follow the star. This alone is reason enough to celebrate!

For us living in the 21st century, real stars in the sky are rare to see. With our city lights blinding our eyes, and the smog constantly spreading a blanket over our heads, it is hard to see clear skies and stars. To see the stars, we must get out of our cities… and there seems to be no time for that. We have no time to look up. We are dazzled and even blinded by too many artificial stars and hence real stars have receded from our view. We hardly look up.

Following a star would also mean following an ideal. To follow such stars, one needs to look not with the physical eye, but with an inner eye, the eyes of our heart. Leo Buscaglia, also known as "Dr. Love," was an American author and motivational speaker, and a professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Southern California. Once he told a story that happened while he was a professor at the university. 

He had a student, Joel, who was brilliant and filled with potential.  Joel, however, had lost his meaning and purpose for living.  His Jewish tradition and background did not serve him. God had become a meaningless symbol.  He had no motivation to live another day and no one could convince him otherwise.  On his way to take his life, he stopped by Leo’s office. Fortunately, the good doctor was in.

The student told Leo that he had lots of money, clothes and cars.  He had been accepted at several of the top engineering schools for their masters programs.  He had everything going for him even good looks. Yet he had nothing inside. He had created an invisible gulf that no one could cross, hence, he had decided to end this miserable life.         

Leo said, “Before you take your life, I want you to visit some old people at the Hebrew Home which is adjacent to our campus.” “What for?” Joel countered.  Leo said, “You need to understand life through the eyes of your heart.” “The eyes of my heart?” he asked. “Yes, you need to experience what it is like to give to those who have lost their connection to a meaningful life. Go to the desk and ask if there are people there who have not been visited for a long time by anyone. You visit them.” “And say what?” “I don’t know,” Leo said, “Tell them anything that will give them hope.” Notice Leo’s strategy – We get back what we give. When we give away what we have, our barriers dissolve.

Leo did not see the student for months.  In fact, he had largely forgotten about him.  One day during the fall, he saw him with other students, a bus and a group of seniors, some who were in wheel chairs. Joel had organized a trip to the baseball game with a group of his new senior friends who had not been to a game in years. The two chatted for a moment. Just before parting Joel said, “Thanks for helping me find the ‘eyes of my heart.’”  Leo nodded and smiled.

A parting thought on ‘following a star’: When we begin to follow a star, let us look for real, inspiring stars even if this means lots of challenges and lots of hardships.

ஆங்கிலத் திரைப்படங்கள் வழியே புகழ்பெற்ற பல நடிகர்களில், அலெக் கின்னஸ் (Alec Guinness) அவர்களும் ஒருவர். பிறந்ததுமுதல், தந்தை யாரென்று அறியாமல் வளர்ந்த அலெக் அவர்கள், தன் இளமைப் பருவத்தில், மதம் சார்ந்த விடயங்களில் அக்கறை ஏதுமின்றி வாழ்ந்தார். தன் 19வது வயதில், மேடை நாடகங்களில் பங்கேற்று, பின்னர், திரைப்படங்களில் நடிக்கும் வாய்ப்பும் பெற்றார்.

புகழ்பெற்ற எழுத்தாளர் G.K.Chesterton அவர்கள், கத்தோலிக்க குரு ஒருவரை மையப்படுத்தி உருவாக்கிய Father Brown என்ற சிறுகதைகளின் தொகுப்பு, திரைப்படமாக உருவானபோது, அதில், அலெக் கின்னஸ் அவர்கள், Father Brown பாத்திரத்தில் நடித்தார். இத்திரைப்படத்தின் படப்பிடிப்பு, பிரான்ஸ் நாட்டின் ஒரு கிராமத்தில் நடைபெற்றது.

ஒருநாள் மாலை, அலெக் அவர்கள், அன்றைய 'shooting'கை முடித்தகையோடு, நடிப்பதற்காக அணிந்திருந்த அங்கியைக் கழற்றாமல், தான் தங்கியிருந்த ஓட்டலை நோக்கி நடந்து சென்றார். அப்போது, வழியில் ஒரு சிறுவன், அவரை, உண்மையிலேயே ஒரு குரு என்று எண்ணி, ஒரு புன்சிரிப்புடன், அவரிடம் ஓடிவந்து, அவரது கரங்களைக் கெட்டியாகப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு, அவருடன் நடந்து சென்றான்.

தன் மனதில் ஆழப்பதிந்த அந்நிகழ்வு, கத்தோலிக்க மதத்தைப்பற்றி தான் கொண்டிருந்த தவறான எண்ணங்களை மாற்றியது என்று, அலெக் அவர்கள், தன் சுய வரலாற்றில் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்: "முன்பின் எவ்வித அறிமுகமும் இல்லாதபோதும், ஒரு சிறு குழந்தையின் மனதில், ஒரு குருவின் உருவம், இவ்வளவு நம்பிக்கையை உருவாக்கமுடியும் என்றால், அந்த கத்தோலிக்க மறையில், நிச்சயம் நல்லவை பல இருக்கவேண்டும்" என்று அவர் எழுதியுள்ளார். கத்தோலிக்க மறையின் மீது தான் கொண்டிருந்த தவறான முற்சார்பு எண்ணங்கள், அன்றிலிருந்து விடைபெற ஆரம்பித்தன என்று, அவர் மேலும் கூறியுள்ளார். ஒருசில ஆண்டுகள் சென்று, ஒருவர்பின் ஒருவராக, அலெக் கின்னஸ், அவரது மனைவி, மெருலா (Merula), மகன் மேத்யூ மூவரும் கத்தோலிக்கத் திருமறையைத் தழுவினர்.

மத நம்பிக்கையற்று வாழ்ந்த அலெக் அவர்களை, கடவுளிடம் அழைத்துச்சென்ற அச்சிறுவன், இருள் சூழ்ந்த அவர் வாழ்வில் ஒளிர்ந்த ஒரு விண்மீன் என்றே சொல்லவேண்டும். அச்சிறுவனின் பெயர் என்ன என்பதுகூட அலெக் அவர்களுக்குத் தெரியாது. விண்மீன்களின் அழகு இதுதான். வழிகாட்டுதல், ஒளியேற்றுதல் என்ற பணிகளை, அமைதியாக, புன்சிரிப்புடன் ஆற்றும் விண்மீன்கள், தங்கள் பெயரையோ, முகவரியையோ பதிவுசெய்யாமல் மறைந்துவிடுகின்றன.

நம் வாழ்விலும், அறிமுகம் ஏதுமின்றி வந்து சேர்ந்த மனிதர்கள், எதிர்பாராத நிகழ்வுகள், என்ற பல விண்மீன்கள், நம்மை நல்வழியில் நடத்திச் சென்றுள்ளன என்பதை மறுக்க இயலாது. அத்தகைய விண்மீன்களைக் கொண்டாட இந்த ஞாயிறன்று நமக்கு வாய்ப்பு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

மூன்று அரசர்கள், மூவேந்தர்கள் அல்லது மூன்று ஞானிகள் என்று பலவாறாக அழைக்கப்படும் மூவரை, விண்மீன் ஒன்று, குழந்தை இயேசுவிடம் அழைத்துச்சென்ற விழாவை இன்று கொண்டாடுகிறோம். இவ்விழா, இறைவன் தன்னை அனைத்து மக்களுக்கும் வெளிப்படுத்திய திருக்காட்சிப் பெருவிழா எனவும் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. இறைவன், அனைத்து மக்களுக்கும் பொதுவானவர் என்பதைப் பறைசாற்றும் விழா, இந்தத் திருக்காட்சிப் பெருவிழா.

கடவுளைத் தனியுடைமையாக்கி, அவர் பெயரால், பிரிவுகளையும், பிளவுகளையும், உருவாக்கி, வன்முறைகளை வளர்க்கும் பல அடிப்படைவாதக் குழுக்கள், தங்கள் தவறுகளை உணர்ந்து, மனமாற்றம் பெறவேண்டுமென மன்றாடுவோம். புலர்ந்திருக்கும் 2019ம் ஆண்டில், இந்தியாவில், பொதுத் தேர்தல்கள் நிகழவிருக்கின்றன. மக்களைப் பிரிப்பதே தங்களுக்கு ஆதாயம் என்ற நோக்கத்துடன் செயலாற்றும் அரசியல் தலைவர்கள், இறைவனையும், மதங்களையும், சாதிகளையும், மூலதனமாக்கி நடத்தப்போகும் ஓட்டு வேட்டைக்கு, மக்கள் பலியாகாமல் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்று, சிறப்பாக செபிப்போம்.

மூன்று ஞானிகள் இயேசுவைச் சந்திக்க வந்த இந்த நிகழ்வை, பல கோணங்களில் நாம் சிந்திக்கலாம். விண்மீன்களின் ஒளியில் இந்த ஞானிகள் வழி நடந்தனர் என்றும்,. இறைவனைச் சந்தித்தபின் இவர்கள் வேறு வழியாகச் சென்றனர் என்றும் நற்செய்தி சொல்கிறது. வாழ்க்கையில் நம்மை வழிநடத்தும் விண்மீன்கள் எவை என்பதைச் சிந்திக்கலாம். இறைவனைச் சந்திக்கும்போதும், சந்தித்தபின்னும் நம் வாழ்வில் ஏற்படும் மாற்றங்களைப் பற்றி சிந்திக்கலாம்.

விண்மீன்கள் என்றதும், மனதில் ‘ஸ்டார்’ என்ற சொல் வலம் வருகிறது. இந்தியாவில், முக்கியமாக, தமிழ் நாட்டில், பல ‘லிட்டில் ஸ்டார்’களையும், ‘சூப்பர் ஸ்டார்’களையும், நாம் உருவாக்கிவிட்டதால், பல இன்னல்களைச் சந்தித்து வருகிறோம். இந்த ஸ்டார்களைச் சுற்றி வட்டமிட்டு, வாழ்வைத் தொலைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் விட்டில் பூச்சிகளான இளையோர், தங்கள் மயக்கத்திலிருந்து விரைவில் விடுதலைபெற வேண்டுமென மன்றாடுவோம்.

திரைப்படங்கள், விளையாட்டு, அரசியல் ஆகிய உலகங்களில் உருவாகும் 'ஸ்டார்களையும்', நம் ஜாதகத்தில், கைரேகைகளில் பதிந்துவிட்ட 'நட்சத்திரங்களையும்' நம்பி வாழாமல், நல்வழிகாட்டும் இலட்சியங்கள் என்ற விண்மீன்களை நாம் பின்பற்ற வேண்டும் என்பது, இந்த திருக்காட்சிப் பெருவிழா நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தரும் அழகியப் பாடம்.

விண்மீன்கள் இரவில் மட்டுமே கண்ணுக்குத் தெரியும். பகலில் தெரியாது. எனவே இந்த ஞானிகள் இரவில் தங்கள் பயணத்தை அதிகம் செய்திருக்கவேண்டும். போக்குவரத்து வசதிகள் ஏதுமற்ற அக்காலத்தில், இரவில் மேற்கொள்ளும் பயணங்கள் எளிதல்ல! பல இரவுகளில், மேகங்களும், பனிமூட்டமும் அந்த விண்மீனை மறைத்திருக்கும். அந்நேரங்களில் மேகமும், பனியும் விலகும்வரைக் காத்திருந்து, மீண்டும் விண்மீனைப் பார்த்து, அவர்கள் நடந்திருக்க வேண்டும். இத்தனை இடர்பாடுகள் மத்தியிலும், ஒரே குறிக்கோளுடன், நீண்டதூரம் பயணம் செய்த அந்த ஞானிகளின் மன உறுதி, நமக்கெல்லாம் நல்லதொரு பாடம்.

நாம் வாழும் அவசர உலகில், விண்மீன்களைப் பார்ப்பது மிகவும் அரிது. வானத்தை நிமிர்ந்து பார்க்கக்கூட நமக்கு இப்போது நேரமில்லை. எப்போது வானத்தைப் பார்ப்போம்? கருமேகம் சூழும்போது, "ஒருவேளை மழை வருமோ?" என்ற சந்தேகப் பார்வையோடு, வானத்தைப் பார்ப்போம். அதேபோல், உள்ளத்தில் கருமேகங்கள் சூழும் போதும், வானத்தைச் சந்தேகத்தோடு பார்க்கிறோம், கடவுள் என்ற ஒருவர் அங்கிருக்கிறாரா என்பதைத் தெரிந்துகொள்ள!

சந்தேகம் வரும்போது மட்டும் வானத்தைப் பார்த்தால், அங்கே, கருமேகங்கள் மட்டுமே தெரியும். அந்தக் கருமேகங்களுக்குப் பின் கண்சிமிட்டும் விண்மீன்கள் தெரியாது. அந்த விண்மீன்கள் விடுக்கும் அழைப்பும் புரியாது. சந்தேகக் கருமேகங்களைத் தாண்டி, வழிகாட்டும் விண்மீன்களைக் காண்பதற்கு, நம் முகக்கண்கள் பயனற்றவை, அகக்கண்கள் தேவை.

அன்பு மருத்துவர், அல்லது, காதல் மருத்துவர் (Dr Love) என்று புகழ்பெற்ற லியோ புஸ்காலியா (Leo Buscaglia) என்ற ஓரு பேராசிரியர் பகிர்ந்துகொண்ட ஓர் அனுபவம் இது: பேராசிரியர் லியோ அவர்கள் தென் கலிபோர்னியா பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் பணியாற்றியபோது, அறிவும், திறமைகளும் கொண்ட ஜோயல் என்ற மாணவர், அவரிடம் படித்துவந்தார். கடவுளையும், மதத்தையும் விட்டு வெகுதூரம் விலகிச்சென்ற ஜோயல், ஏன் வாழ்கிறோம் என்பது தெரியாமல் குழம்பிப்போன நிலையில், ஒருநாள், தன் வாழ்வை முடித்துக்கொள்ள தீர்மானித்தார்.

சாவதற்கு முன், தன் அபிமான ஆசிரியர் லியோ புஸ்காலியாவைப் சந்திக்கச் சென்றார். தான் எடுத்திருந்த முடிவை அவரிடம் சொன்னார். "உன் வாழ்வை முடித்துக் கொள்வதற்கு முன், நமது பல்கலைக்கழகத்திற்கு அருகில் உள்ள முதியோர் இல்லத்திற்குச் சென்று வா" என்றார் லியோ. ஆசிரியர் என்ன சொல்கிறார் என்பதை ஜோயல் புரிந்துகொள்ளவில்லை. எனவே, லியோ அவரிடம், "நீ உன் வாழ்வை முடித்துக் கொள்வதற்கு முன், வாழ்வு என்றால் என்ன என்பதை, உன் இதயக் கண்கள் கொண்டு நீ பார்க்கவேண்டும்" என்றார். "இதயக் கண்களா?" என்று ஜோயல் அழுத்திக் கேட்டதும், லியோ மேலும் விளக்கமளித்தார்: "அந்த முதியோர் இல்லத்தில் வாழ்வோருக்கு உன்னால் என்ன தரமுடியும் என்பதைச் சிந்தித்துப்பார். அங்குள்ளவர்களில், யார், எந்த ஓர் உறவினரும் வராமல், பல மாதங்கள் அல்லது வருடங்கள் காத்திருக்கிறார்களோ, அவர்களைச் சென்று பார்" என்று லியோ சொன்னதும், ஜோயல், "அவர்களிடம் என்ன சொல்லவேண்டும்?" என்று கேட்டார். "என்ன சொல்ல வேண்டும் என்பதை நீயே தீர்மானித்துக் கொள்.. ஆனால், வாழ்வில் ஒரு பிடிப்பை, நம்பிக்கையை உண்டாக்கும் வகையில் எதையாவது அவர்களுக்கு சொல்" என்று சொல்லி அனுப்பினார். பிறருக்கு நம்பிக்கை கொடுப்பதன் வழியாக, நாம், வாழ்வில் அர்த்தத்தைப் பெறமுடியும் என்பதே, பேராசிரியர் லியோ அவர்கள் கொடுத்த ஆலோசனையில் பொதிந்திருந்த இரகசியம்.

இந்தச் சந்திப்பிற்குப் பின், ஜோயலுக்கு என்ன ஆயிற்று என்பதை லியோ புஸ்காலியா மறந்துவிட்டார். ஒரு நாள், அவர் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் நடைபெற்ற ஒரு கால்பந்தாட்டப் போட்டிக்குப் போய்கொண்டிருந்தபோது, இளையவர் ஜோயல், ஒரு பேருந்தில் வந்து இறங்கினார். அவருடன், முதியோர் இல்லத்திலிருந்து, பத்து அல்லது பதினைந்து பேர், சக்கர நாற்காலிகளில் வந்து இறங்கினர். ஜோயல், தன் ஆசிரியர் லியோவிடம் வந்தார். "சார், இவர்கள் கால்பந்தாட்டப் போட்டியை நேரில் பார்த்து பல ஆண்டுகள் ஆகிவிட்டதாம். எனவேதான் அவர்களை அழைத்து வந்துள்ளேன்" என்று சொன்னார். சிறிது தூரம் சென்றபின், லியோவின் கரங்களை இறுகப் பற்றியபடி ஜோயல் பேசினார்: "என் இதயத்தின் கண்களைத் திறந்து மற்றவர் தேவைகளை எனக்குச் சொல்லித் தந்தீர்கள். மிக்க நன்றி" என்று சொன்னார்.

தான், தனது உலகம் என்ற சிறு வட்டத்திற்குள் வாழ்வின் பொருளைத் தேடி, விரக்தியடைந்து, வாழ்வையே முடித்துக்கொள்ளத் தீர்மானித்த இளையவர் ஜோயல், தன் உலகிற்குள் அடுத்தவரை அனுமதித்தபோது, தன் வாழ்வின் பொருளை உணர்ந்தார். இதயத்தின் கண்களைத் திறந்து பார்த்தால், இந்த உலகில் பல அதிசயங்களைப் பார்க்கலாம். அந்த அதிசயங்களின் ஊற்றான இறைவனையும் பார்க்கலாம். இதைத்தான் கீழ்த்திசை ஞானிகள் மூவர் இன்று நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தருகின்றனர்.

இந்த மூன்று ஞானிகளை, பாரம்பரியமாக, மூன்று அரசர்கள் என்றே அழைத்து வந்துள்ளோம். இக்கண்ணோட்டத்தில் பார்க்கும்போது, இன்றைய நற்செய்தி (மத்தேயு 2:1-12) நான்கு அரசர்களைப் பற்றி கூறுகிறது. ஆம், இந்த மூன்று அரசர்களுடன், நாம், ஏரோது அரசனையும் இணைத்துப் பார்க்கிறோம். இவர்கள் நால்வரும் இயேசுவைத் தேடினார்கள். விண்மீன் வழிநடத்த, நீண்ட தூரம் பயணம் செய்த மூன்று அரசர்கள், எவ்வித உள்நோக்கமும் இன்றி, இயேசுவைத் தேடினர். இயேசுவைக் கண்டதும் தங்களையே அர்ப்பணம் செய்ததன் அடையாளமாக, காணிக்கைகளை, அக்குழந்தையின் காலடியில் சமர்ப்பித்தனர்... அதன்பின், வேறுவழியில் தங்கள் நாடுகளுக்குத் திரும்பினர். இந்நிகழ்வுக்குப் பின், அவர்களைப் பற்றி விவிலியத்தில் எந்தத் தகவலும் இல்லை. திரும்பிச்சென்ற வழியில், அவர்கள், காற்றோடு காற்றாக, கரைந்துவிட்டதைப் போல் தெரிகிறது. இறைவனை உண்மையிலேயேக் கண்டு, நிறைவடைந்த அனைவருமே, தங்கள் வாழ்வை, அவருக்கென அர்ப்பணித்துவிட்டு, மறைவதையே விரும்புவர். இந்த அழகியப் பாடத்தை மூன்று அரசர்கள் நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தருகின்றனர்.

இதற்கு நேர்மாறாக, நான்காவது அரசன் ஏரோதுவின் செயல்பாடுகள் அமைந்தன. அவனும் இயேசுவைத் தேடினான். எதற்காக? அவரைக் கொல்வதற்காக. அவனது தேடுதல், வெறியாக மாறி, பல நூறு பச்சிளம் குழந்தைகளை அவன் கொன்று குவித்தான். அவனைப் பொருத்தவரை, அவனது அரியணையே அவன் வணங்கிய கடவுள். சுயநலம், அதிகார வெறி என்ற தீமைகளால் சூழப்பட்ட ஏரோதின் வாழ்க்கை, நமக்குச் சொல்லித்தரும் எச்சரிக்கைப் பாடங்களையும் கற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டியது அவசியம்.

விண்மீன் காட்டிய பாதையில் சென்று, இறைவனைக் கண்டதால், தங்கள் வாழ்க்கைப் பாதையை மாற்றிய ஞானிகளைப்போல், எத்தனையோ நல்ல உள்ளங்கள், தங்களையும், உலகத்தையும் மாற்றியிருக்கிறார்கள். தடைகள் பல எழுந்தாலும், தளரா உள்ளத்துடன், உன்னத குறிக்கோள்கள் என்ற விண்மீன்களைத் தொடர்ந்து, இறைவனைக் காண முயல்வோம். அந்த இறைவனிடம் மற்றவர்களை அழைத்துவரும் விண்மீன்களாக மாற, நாம் துவங்கியிருக்கும் புதிய ஆண்டு நமக்கு உதவுவதாக.
