In Greek mythology we come across the famous story of the ‘Pandora’s box’, which is actually a jar. According to Greek mythology, Epimetheus left a jar with his wife Pandora, with the strict order not to open it on any account. She became curious to find out what was inside the jar. When she opened the jar, sickness, death and many other unspecified evils were released into the world. From this story has grown the idiom "to open a Pandora's box", meaning to do or start something that will cause many unforeseen problems.

Last Sunday, October 3, 2021, a Pandora’s box was opened. International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) released ‘Pandora Papers’, which was called ‘an offshore data tsunami’ by the ICIJ. The Pandora Papers is a leak of almost 12 million documents that reveals hidden wealth, tax avoidance and, in some cases, money laundering by some of the world's rich and powerful. More than 600 journalists in 117 countries have been working day and night for months, finding stories that have been published in Pandora Papers.

More than 330 politicians, including 35 country leaders, exposed by the leak were from more than 90 countries and territories. They used entities in secrecy jurisdictions to buy real estate, hold money in trust, own other companies and other assets, sometimes anonymously. Among those identified in India, is a great sports person who was ‘worshipped’ by millions of fans. An estimated $32 trillion may be hidden from being taxed, according to reports.

Against such a background, the liturgical readings today invite us to reflect on how to deal with riches in this world. We hear the wisdom of Solomon in the First Reading comparing wisdom to riches: I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her, nor did I liken any priceless gem to her; because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire. (Wisdom 7:7-10)

‘Pandora Papers’ is not the first time, such shocking revelations of the hidden wealth of rich people come to light. In 2013, Offshore Leaks came out. In 2016, Panama Papers, in 2017 Paradise Papers and now in 2021, Pandora Papers have come out. Every time we hear of such scandals, we tend to talk among ourselves saying, “Wish there is some way to hold them accountable”. Today’s Second Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews closes with a stern warning along these lines: No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account. (Hebrews 4:13)

Like Solomon, who sought and found wisdom, in today’s Gospel (Mark 10: 17-30), we see another person coming to Jesus seeking help and asking him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?". Jesus gives him the basic minimum requirement to enter eternal life – namely, ‘follow the commandments’. When Jesus finds out that the man was seeking to do more, he gave him a tough challenge: “Go sell what you have, and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.” (Mk. 10:21)

Jesus admired this rich man, since he had been following all the commandments from his youth. Hence, he proposed the next step – go sell all that you have and give it to the poor. Following the ten commandments may help us in deliverance, but there are greater ways. The step proposed by Jesus was too much for the rich man. He went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions. (Mk. 10:22) The admiration of Jesus for this man, turned into pity and he makes the famous saying: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” (Mk. 10:25)

The Gospel registers twice the shock experienced by the disciples: “The disciples were amazed at his words.” and “They were exceedingly astonished.”  (cf. Mk. 10:24,26)

The disciples had all along been thinking that the rich would EASILY enter God’s kingdom, in fact that they had made advanced booking there. And Jesus says: “Excuse me, it is not so. They will have to really struggle very hard.”

Jesus gave this shock treatment and invited the disciples to reflect on riches. Jesus is inviting us to reflect on riches. We shall try to reflect along three angles: Riches – how are they accumulated, how do they imprison us, and how are we to be delivered from them.

Accumulation of riches: Someone has become a billionaire through sheer hard work or by inheriting a fortune. Let him or her enjoy. Why talk about it? Well, we cannot treat this subject so lightly. If those riches were accumulated through fair means, we can surely let him or her enjoy the fortune. But, if she or he had accumulated those riches through unfair means, especially, through exploiting poor people, then those riches bring in lots of questions and condemnation.

To draw a parallel, let us think of Emperor Nero, composing music on his fiddle or lyre or whatever it was. Well, Nero had a talent for music and he had a musical instrument with him. Who am I to stop him or be bothered about his music? The matter is not that simple.

There are quite a few versions about Nero playing his fiddle. It is said that Nero set fire to Rome in order to compose music… or he was involved in his music so much that he did not bother about Rome burning. His music and the misery of Rome were intrinsically connected. So, it is not easy to make statements like: ‘Nero had a talent for music and he had a fiddle with him’. The situation of him making music needs some probing. The same logic needs to be extended to the discussion of someone becoming rich, accumulating wealth. He worked hard and he has become rich is too simple a logic. Simplistic, I would say. Background information needs to be analysed.

Coming back to Pandora Papers, we are shocked to see that even during the pandemic, which had strangled millions of poor people, not only of their health and life, but also drained out all their livelihood, these rich people had heaped more money to their offshore wealth during the pandemic. If they, at least during the pandemic, had the conscience to pay their taxes, many more poor people could have been helped to tide over their misery at least to some extent. Accumulation of wealth has a dominos effect on the human society!

Imprisoned by riches: When we reflect on how rich people can get imprisoned in their rich ambience with zero concern for those around them, an article written by Francois Gautier comes to mind. 

Many years back, in one of the leading dailies of India, Francois Gautier had reflected on the PLAGUE that swept through Surat, a city in north India. He talked of Surat being one of the richest cities in India, since the main trade there was diamond business. The houses in Surat were palaces kept spotlessly clean with the help of domestic labourers. (That these labourers were paid unjust wages was also mentioned there). But the focus of the column was that if those houses were kept so clean, then why the plague? It was because the sense of cleanliness of those rich people stopped abruptly at the doorsteps of each palace. Their public sense of cleanliness was almost zero. Those rich families were living in islands of luxury and opulence, while the city was becoming a cesspool. The result? Plague! The plague was a real wake up call for those rich people, telling them that it was not enough just to be closed up with one’s own house and its affairs but also to be involved in the neighbourhood.

A similar call has come to all of us during this pandemic to wake up and see humanity as a whole and not as isolated, privileged groups. The pandemic has taught us the hard truth that we are all in this struggle TOGETHER! If, after this pandemic, we continue to be ‘imprisoned’ in our own selfish interests, we shall be facing more troubles. 

Deliver us from riches: How do we get out of such prisons? Today’s Gospel seems to give us an answer - (Mark 10: 17-30), especially verse 21: And Jesus, looking upon him loved him, and said to him: “You lack one thing; go sell what you have, and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.

Sharing our riches with the poor is a sure way to enter eternal life. When the rich have forgotten the art of sharing, the poor, simple people have mastered this art. During the pandemic there were many instances where simple people have come forward to share their meagre wealth with those who were suffering.

A lady, a widow, who lived in a very miserable hut, was saving money for quite a few years to build a better house. During the pandemic, she broke her savings and helped out poor people who had lost their jobs and were struggling to survive.

Go sell what you have, and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.

Let these words of Jesus (repeated over and over again) sink deep into our hearts… and lead us to some action!

ஆங்கில மொழியில் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் "Pandora's box", அதாவது, "பண்டோராவின் பேழை" என்ற சொற்றொடர், கிரேக்கப் புராணத்தில் சொல்லப்படும் ஒரு கதையிலிருந்து உருவானது. ‘பண்டோரா’ என்ற பெயர்கொண்ட பெண்ணிடம், அவரது கணவர் ஒரு பேழையைக் கொடுத்து, அதைப் பத்திரமாகக் கண்காணிக்கும்படியும், எக்காரணத்தைக் கொண்டும் அதை திறந்துவிடக்கூடாது என்றும் கட்டளையிட்டார். அந்தக் பேழையில் என்னதான் இருக்கிறது என்று காணும் ஆவலில், பண்டோரா, அந்தக் பேழையைத் திறந்தார். அதற்குள் அடைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த சாவு, நோய்கள், தீமைகள் அனைத்தும் வெளியேறி, உலகெங்கும் பரவியது என்று கிரேக்க புராணக் கதையொன்று கூறுகிறது.

இந்தக் கதையைப் பின்புலமாகக் கொண்டு, யாராவது ஒருவர், அறிந்தோ, அறியாமலோ, பிரச்சனைகளைத் துவக்கிவைத்தால், அவர், 'பண்டோராவின் பேழை'யைத் திறந்துவிட்டார் என்று சொல்வது, ஆங்கில மொழியில் ஒரு சொல்லாடலாக உருவெடுத்துள்ளது.

உலகின் பல முக்கிய மனிதர்கள் குவித்துவைத்திருக்கும் சொத்துக்களைப்பற்றிய அதிர்ச்சியூட்டும் தகவல்கள், அண்மையில், அதாவது, சென்ற ஞாயிறு, அக்டோபர் 3ம் தேதி, வெளியாயின. அந்தத் தகவல்களின் தொகுப்பிற்கு, 'Pandora papers', அதாவது, 'பண்டோரா பக்கங்கள்' என்று பெயர் சூட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது.

117 நாடுகளைச் சேர்ந்த 600க்கும் மேற்பட்ட செய்தியாளர்கள், பல மாதங்களாக கவனமாகத் திரட்டிய, 1 கோடியே, 19 இலட்சம் தகவல்கள், 'பண்டோரா பக்கங்கள்' என்ற பெயரில் வெளியாகி, உலகெங்கும் அதிர்ச்சி 'சுனாமி'யை உருவாக்கியுள்ளன.

90 நாடுகளில் உள்ள 35 அரசுத்தலைவர்கள் உட்பட, 330க்கும் மேற்பட்ட அரசியல்வாதிகள், இன்னும் பல்லாயிரம் பணக்காரர்கள், தங்கள் நாட்டில் வரிசெலுத்துவதைத் தவிர்ப்பதற்காக, வெளிநாடுகளில் பணத்தை குவித்துவைத்திருக்கும் அவலங்கள் வெளிச்சத்திற்கு வந்துள்ளன.

இந்தியாவில், பல கோடி மக்களால், ஏறத்தாழ ஒரு கடவுளைப்போல் கொண்டாடப்பட்ட ஒரு விளையாட்டு வீரர், 6 பெரும் வர்த்தகர்கள், இன்னும் பல அரசியல்வாதிகள், அரசு அதிகாரிகள் ஆகியோர், அந்நிய நாடுகளில் குவித்துவைத்திருக்கும் சொத்துக்களின் இரகசியங்கள் அம்பலாகியுள்ளன.

'பண்டோரா பக்கங்கள்' வழியே, செல்வந்தர்கள் பலரின் சொத்துக்குவிப்பு வெறி, வெளிச்சமிட்டுக் காட்டப்பட்டுள்ள இத்தகைய ஒரு சூழலில், செல்வம் சேர்ப்பதைப்பற்றிய, தெளிவான சிந்தனைகளை, இந்த ஞாயிறு வழிபாட்டின் வாசகங்கள் நமக்கு வழங்குகின்றன.

செங்கோல், அரியணை, செல்வம் அனைத்தும் தன்னைச் சூழ்ந்திருந்தாலும், ஞானத்திற்கு முதலிடம் தந்த மன்னன் சாலமோன், ஞானத்தையும், செல்வத்தையும் ஒப்பிட்டுப் பேசுவது, இன்றைய முதல் வாசகத்தில் பதிவாகியுள்ளது.

சாலமோனின் ஞானம் 7: 7-11

நான் மன்றாடினேன்; ஞானம் எனக்குக் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது. நான் இறைவனை வேண்டினேன்; ஞானத்தின் ஆவி என்மீது பொழியப்பட்டது. செங்கோலுக்கும் அரியணைக்கும் மேலாக அதை விரும்பித் தேர்ந்தேன்; அதனோடு ஒப்பிடும்போது, செல்வம் ஒன்றுமே இல்லை என்று உணர்ந்தேன். விலையுயர்ந்த மாணிக்கக் கல்லும் அதற்கு ஈடில்லை; அதனோடு ஒப்பிடும்போது, பொன்னெல்லாம் சிறிதளவு மணலுக்கே நிகர்; அதற்கு முன் வெள்ளியும் களிமண்ணாகவே கருதப்படும்... ஞானத்தோடு எல்லா நலன்களும் என்னிடம் வந்து சேர்ந்தன. அளவற்ற செல்வத்தை அது ஏந்தி வந்தது.

ஏராளமாய் செல்வம் சேர்த்து வைத்திருந்த ஒருவர், நிலைவாழ்வு பெற என்ன வழி என்று தேடிய நிகழ்வு, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளது. அந்தத் தேடல், அவரை, இயேசுவிடம் கொண்டுவருகிறது. இயேசு, அவரிடம், கட்டளைகளைக் கடைபிடிக்கச் சொல்கிறார். அவரோ, கட்டளைகளை தான் கடைபிடித்து வந்துள்ளதாகவும், அதற்கும் மேல் என்ன செய்வது என்றும் கேட்கும்போது, இயேசு: "நீர் போய் உமக்கு உள்ளவற்றை விற்று ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடும். அப்போது விண்ணகத்தில் நீர் செல்வராய் இருப்பீர். பின்பு வந்து என்னைப் பின்பற்றும்" (மாற்கு 10:21) என்கிறார். அந்த செல்வர் சற்றும் எதிபாராத சவாலை இயேசு அவர்முன் வைத்தார். இயேசு சொன்னதைக் கேட்டதும் அவர் முகம்வாடி வருத்தத்தோடு சென்றுவிட்டார். ஏனெனில் அவருக்கு ஏராளமான சொத்து இருந்தது (மாற்கு 10:22) என்று, இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் வாசிக்கிறோம். அவர் தேடிவந்த நிலைவாழ்வை விட, அவருடைய சொத்துகள் அவரை அதிகமாய் பற்றியிருந்ததால், இயேசு விடுத்த சவாலான அழைப்பை, அவரால் ஏற்கமுடியவில்லை.

போகும்போது, அவர், இயேசுவை, திரும்பித் திரும்பிப் பார்த்தபடியே போயிருப்பார் என்று கற்பனைசெய்து பார்க்கலாம். எந்த நிமிடமும், இயேசு, மற்றுமோர் எளிதான வழியைச் சொல்லமாட்டாரா என்ற ஏக்கத்தில், அவர், அப்படி பார்த்தபடியே சென்றிருப்பார். இயேசுவும், அவரை, கனிவோடு பார்த்தபடியே நின்றிருப்பார். இத்தனை செல்வங்கள் இருந்தும், அவர் கடவுள் மட்டில் இவ்வளவு ஈடுபாடு கொண்டு, கட்டளைகளை எல்லாம் இளவயது முதல் கடைபிடித்திருக்கிறாரே என்று, இயேசுவுக்கு அவர்மேல் மதிப்பு இருந்திருக்கும்... ஆனாலும், என்ன செய்வது? அவரால் அடுத்த நிலைக்கு உயர முடியவில்லையே என்று இயேசுவுக்கு அவர்மேல் பரிதாபம் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கும். அந்த பரிதாப உணர்வினால், இயேசுவிடமிருந்து வெளிவந்த ஆழமான வார்த்தைகள், இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இவ்வாறு பதிவாகியுள்ளன: “பிள்ளைகளே, செல்வர்கள் இறையாட்சிக்கு உட்படுவது மிகவும் கடினம். அவர்கள் இறையாட்சிக்கு உட்படுவதைவிட ஊசியின் காதில் ஒட்டகம் நுழைவது எளிது.” (மாற்கு 10: 24-25)

இயேசுவின் இந்தக் கூற்று சீடர்களை, திகைப்பிலும், வியப்பிலும் ஆழ்த்தியதாக, நற்செய்தி சொல்கிறது. இருக்காதா பின்னே? செல்வந்தர் விண்ணரசில் கட்டாயம் நுழைவார்கள்; அவர்களுக்கு, விண்ணகத்தில், ஏற்கனவே உயர்ந்த இடங்கள் முன்பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன, விண்ணகத்தின் நுழைவாயிலில், அவர்கள் வரிசையில் நிற்கக்கூட தேவையில்லை என, சீடர்கள், அதுவரை நம்பிவந்த எண்ணங்களுக்கு முற்றிலும் மாறாக, "மன்னிக்கவும். அவர்கள் விண்ணரசில் நுழைவது கடினம்" என்ற அதிர்ச்சியானத் தகவலை இயேசு தருகிறார்.

செல்வத்தைப்பற்றி, செல்வந்தரைப்பற்றி, சீடர்கள் கொண்டிருந்த எண்ணங்களைத் தலைகீழாகப் புரட்டிப்போட்டு, அவர்களைச் சிந்திக்கவைத்தார் இயேசு. இன்று நமக்கும் செல்வம், செல்வந்தர் இவற்றைப்பற்றி சிந்திக்க, ஓர் அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறார். நம் சிந்தனைகளை, செல்வம் சேர்ப்பது, செல்வங்களால் சிறைப்படுவது, செல்வத்தைப் பகிர்வது என்று மூன்று கோணங்களில் மேற்கொள்வோம்.

செல்வம் சேர்ப்பது, முதல் கருத்து. ஒருவர், தன் சொந்த முயற்சியாலோ, அல்லது பரம்பரையாய் வந்த வசதியாலோ, செல்வந்தர் ஆகிறார். “ஆகட்டுமே, அதனால் நமக்கென்ன?” என்று அவ்வளவு எளிதாக, மேலோட்டமாக சொல்லிவிடமுடியாது. அந்தச் செல்வம், நேர்மையான வழிகளில் வந்த செல்வம் என்றால், அவர்கள், தலைமுறை, தலைமுறையாய் வாழ்ந்து அனுபவிக்கட்டும் என்று மனதார வாழ்த்துவோம். ஆனால், சேர்க்கப்பட்ட செல்வம், நேர்மையற்ற, குறுக்குவழிகளில் வந்திருந்தால், அதுவும் ஆயிரக்கணக்கானோரை ஏமாற்றி, அவர்கள் வாழ்வை சீரழித்து சேர்க்கப்பட்ட செல்வம் என்றால், அது, அவர்களுக்கு, ஆசீரா, சாபமா என்பதை சிந்திக்கவேண்டும்.

'Pandora papers', வெளியிட்ட தகவல்களில், அதிர்ச்சியுடன் வேதனையையும் கூட்டும் தகவல்கள் வெளிவந்துள்ளன. கோவிட்-19 பெருந்தொற்றின் தாக்கத்தால், உலகமெங்கும் மக்கள் தங்கள் உயிரை மட்டுமல்லாமல், உடைமைகளையும், வாழ்வாதரங்களையும் இழந்துள்ள வேளையில், இந்தச் செல்வந்தர்களின் சொத்துக்குவிப்பில், எந்தத் தடையோ, குறைவோ ஏற்படவில்லை என்பது, வேதனையளிக்கும் தகவல்.

அரசுகளின் கண்களில் மண்ணைத் தூவி, வரிகளைச் செலுத்தாமல், அந்நிய நாடுகளில், செல்வத்தைக் குவித்துவைத்திருப்போரைப்பற்றிய செய்திகள் வெளியாவது இது முதல்முறையல்ல. ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் இத்தகைய செய்திகள் வெளியாகும்போது, "இந்த அநியாயங்களுக்கெல்லாம் அவர்கள் ஒரு நாள் கணக்கு கொடுத்தே ஆகவேண்டும்" என்று நம்மிடையே அடிக்கடி சொல்லப்படும் ஒரு கூற்றினை, இன்றைய இரண்டாம் வாசகம் இவ்வாறு பதிவுசெய்துள்ளது:

செல்வங்களால் சிறைப்படுவது, இரண்டாவது கருத்து. செல்வங்களால் சிறைப்படுவது என்பதைச் சிந்திக்கும்போது, பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னால், செய்திதாளில் வாசித்த ஒரு கட்டுரை நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது. இதை எழுதியவர் பிரெஞ்ச் நாட்டில் பிறந்து, இந்தியாவில் பல ஆண்டுகளாக் வாழ்ந்துவரும் Francois Gautier.

பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னால், (1994) சூரத் என்ற நகரில் கொள்ளைநோய் பரவியதை மையமாகக் கொண்டு அவர் எழுதிய ஒரு கட்டுரையில், அவர் செல்வந்தர்களைப்பற்றி கூறியது, இந்த பெருந்தொற்று காலத்தில், இன்னும் அதிகமாக நம்மைச் சிந்திக்கத் தூண்டுகிறது. அவர் கூறுவது இதோ: இந்தியாவில் இருப்பவர்கள் தங்கள் வீடுகளை அதிக சுத்தமாக வைத்திருப்பதைப் பார்த்து அசந்துபோயிருக்கிறேன். ஆனால், இதே ஆட்கள், தங்கள் வீட்டை சுத்தம் செய்து சேகரித்த குப்பையை, வீட்டுக்கு முன் போடுவார்கள். தெரு சுத்தம்பற்றி அவர்களுக்கு கொஞ்சமும் கவலை இருக்காது.

மும்பையில் அதிகமாய் செல்வம் கொழிக்கும் ஒரு பகுதியைப்பற்றி குறிப்பிட்டு, அப்பகுதியிலுள்ள வீடுகள், அரண்மனைகளாய் மிளிரும், ஆனால், தெருக்களோ, குப்பைகளால் நாறிக்கிடக்கும் என்று, Gautier அவர்கள் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

கொள்ளைநோய் பரவிய சூரத் நகர், இந்தியாவிலேயே, பணக்காரர்கள் நிறைந்த ஒரு நகரம், ஏனெனில் அங்கே உள்ள ஒரு தலையாயத் தொழில், வைரத் தொழில். அந்நகரில் எப்படி கொள்ளைநோய் வந்தது என்று கேட்பவர்கள், அந்நகரின் தெருக்களைப் பார்க்கவேண்டும். வீடுகள், அரண்மனைகளாய் இருந்தாலும், பொதுச்சுத்தம் என்று வரும்போது, அந்நகர், மிகவும் அழுக்காய் இருந்தது. கொள்ளைநோய் அவர்கள் அனைவரின் சமுதாய சிந்தனையை உலுக்கி எடுத்த ஒரு பாடத்தைச் சொல்லித்தந்தது. தன் வீடு சுத்தமாய் இருந்தால் மட்டும் போதாது, போது இடமும் சுத்தமாய் இருக்கவேண்டும். இல்லையெனில், அந்த அழுக்கு, விரைவில், தன் வீட்டையும் பாதிக்கும் என்பதை அந்த வைர வியாபாரிகள் கொள்ளைநோய் மூலம் கற்றுக்கொண்டனர். ஆனால், இந்தியாவின் பல நகரங்கள், இன்னும் இந்தப் பாடத்தைக் கற்றுக்கொள்ளவில்லை என்று Gautier அவர்கள் தன் கட்டுரையில் பதிவுசெய்துள்ளார். அவர் பகிர்ந்துகொண்ட எண்ணங்கள், செல்வம் எப்படி ஒருவரைச் சிறைப்படுத்துகிறது என்பதை வெளிச்சமிட்டு காட்டுகிறது. இந்தப் பெருந்தொற்றைத் தொடர்ந்துவரும் காலத்தில், செல்வந்தர்கள் உட்பட, நாம் அனைவருமே, தங்கக்கம்பிகளால் செய்யப்பட்ட சிறைகளுக்குள் நம்மையே அடைத்துக்கொள்ளாமல் வெளிவரவேண்டும் என்று, மனதார விழைவோம்.

இச்சிறையிலிருந்து விடுதலை பெறுவது எப்படி? செல்வத்தைப் பகிர்வது, அதுவும், இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் குறிப்பிட்டுச் சொன்னதுபோல், ஏழைகளிடம் பகிர்வது ஒன்றே, இச்சிறையிலிருந்து நம்மை விடுவிக்கும். தோர்டன் வில்டேர் (Thorton Wilder)  என்ற நாடக ஆசிரியர் பணத்தைப் பற்றி கூறியுள்ள ஒரு கருத்து, பயனுள்ளதாக இருக்கும்: "பணம் உரத்தைப் போன்றது. குமித்து வைத்தால், நாற்றம் எடுக்கும். பயனளிக்காது. நிலமெங்கும் தூவப்படும்போதுதான், அது பயனளிக்கும்."

பெருந்தொற்று உருவாக்கிய முழு அடைப்பால், தங்கள் வேலைகளை இழந்து, சொந்த ஊர்களுக்குத் திரும்பமுடியாமல், பட்டினியால் தவித்த பல்லாயிரம் வறியோருக்கு உதவிகள் செய்த சாதாரண மனிதர்களைப்பற்றிய பல செய்திகளை நாம் கேட்டோம். தான் வாழ்வது ஒரு பரிதாபமான வீட்டில் என்றாலும், புதிதாக வீடுகட்ட வங்கியில் சேமித்து வைத்திருந்த பணத்தை, பெருந்தொற்று காலத்தில், மக்களின் பசிபோக்க பகிர்ந்தளித்த ஒரு கைம்பெண்... தங்கள் பிறந்தநாள் கொண்டாட்டத்திற்கென, பெற்றோர் தந்த பணத்தை, பெருந்தொற்று அவசரகால உதவி நிதிக்கென வழங்கிய குழந்தைகள், என்று செய்திகளைக் கேட்கும்போது, மனிதம் இன்னும் வாழ்கிறது என்ற நம்பிக்கை வளர்கிறது. “நீர் போய் உமக்கு உள்ளவற்றை விற்று ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடும். அப்போது விண்ணகத்தில் நீர் செல்வராய் இருப்பீர்” என்று இயேசு விடுக்கும் சவாலான அழைப்பு, நம் உள்ளங்களில் பசுமரத்தாணியாகப் பதியவேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம்.

இறுதியாக ஓர் எண்ணம், ஒரு வேண்டுதல்... கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவையின் 16வது உலக ஆயர்களின் பொதுப்பேரவை, அக்டோபர் 9,10 ஆகிய இரு நாள்கள், துவங்கியுள்ளன. இந்தப் பொதுப்பேரவையின் இறுதிக்கூட்டம், 2023ம் ஆண்டு, அக்டோபர் மாதம் வத்திக்கானில் நடைபெறும் என்றாலும், அந்தப் பேரவையின் ஆரம்பக்கட்ட கூட்டங்கள் இப்போதே ஆரம்பமாகின்றன.

“For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission” அதாவது, "ஒன்றுசேர்ந்து பயணிக்கும் திருஅவைக்காக: ஒருங்கிணைப்பு, பங்கேற்பு, மற்றும் மறைப்பணி" என்ற மையக்கருத்துடன் நிகழும் 16வது பொதுப்பேரவையின் கூட்டங்கள், முதலில் ஒவ்வொரு பங்குத்தளத்திலும், மறைமாவட்டத்திலும் நடைபெற்று, அவற்றின் சிகரமாக 2023ம் ஆண்டு, அக்டோபர் மாதம், வத்திக்கானில் நிறைவுபெறும்.

அக்டோபர் 9, வத்திக்கானின் ஆயர்கள் மாமன்ற அவையில், 16வது உலக ஆயர்களின் பொதுப் பேரவையின் பணிகளை திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள் துவக்கிவைத்தார். அடுத்துவரும் இரு ஆண்டுகள், இப்பேரவையின் பணிகள் அனைத்தும் நல்லமுறையில் நடைபெற, அக்டோபர் 10, இஞ்ஞாயிறன்று, புனித பேதுரு பெருங்கோவிலில், திருத்தந்தை திருப்பலியை ஒப்புக்கொடுக்கிறார். இதைத் தொடர்ந்து, அக்டோபர் 17, வருகிற ஞாயிறன்று, உலகின் அனைத்து மறைமாவட்டங்களிலும், இப்பேரவையின் பணிகள் துவங்கும்.

செல்வத்தைக் குவித்துவைக்கும் நோய் பரவியுள்ளதைப்போலவே, அதிகாரம், சக்தி அனைத்தும், அதிகம், அதிகமாக தங்களிடம் மட்டுமே மையம் கொண்டிருக்கவேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கத்தில் செயலாற்றும் அரசுகளும், நிறுவனங்களும் பெருகிவரும் இன்றைய உலகில், ஒரு மாற்று அடையாளமாக, கத்தோலிக்கத் திருஅவை, தன் அதிகாரம், சக்தி ஆகியவை, வத்திக்கானில் மையம் கொண்டிராமல், தலத்திருஅவைகளில் மையம்கொண்டிருக்கவேண்டும் என்ற கருத்தை இவ்வுலகிற்கு உணர்த்தும்வண்ணம், தற்போது ஆரம்பமாகியிருக்கும் இந்த ஒருங்கிணைந்த பயணத்தை, இறைவன் ஆசீர்வதித்து, வழிநடத்தவேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம்.
