32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 12,
this Sunday, the Festival of Lights (Deepavali
or Diwali) is
celebrated all over India and by Indians living in other countries. May this Festival of Lights be a meaningful celebration
to all of us. The emphasis is on meaningful celebration… Every
year, when this festival is around the corner, some news stories get published
that tell us how to celebrate Deepavali in a meaningful, mature way. Here is
one such news story that appeared in ‘India Times’ last year – October 24,
2022:
The residents of
some villages in Tami Nadu - Vetangudipatti and Periya Kollukudipatti villages
of Tirupathur District said no to bursting firecrackers on Diwali many years
ago, not because of any official ban. The villages are close to the Vettangudi
birds' sanctuary, which is a natural habitat of winter migratory birds which
fly from as far as Switzerland, Russia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. This
sanctuary attracts 15,000 birds a year. The sanctuary has been considered one
of the safe and protected breeding grounds for over 200 species of migratory
birds for almost half a century. Since then, villagers in Vettangudi, Periya
Kollukudipatti and Chinna Kollukudipatti have been celebrating crackerless
Diwali. It is not just Diwali; the villagers do not burst crackers even during
marriages and temple festivals.
Similarly,
villagers around the Vellode birds' sanctuary in Erode District have also been
celebrating Diwali without firecrackers for nearly 20 years. The people of
Koothankulam village in Tirunelveli district, which has a bird sanctuary, have
avoided bursting firecrackers during the festival for a long time. For the
residents of Vavval Thoppu in Salem, Perambur, a village near the temple town
of Seerkazhi in Nagapattinam and Vishar, a village near Kancheepuram the reason
for not bursting firecrackers during Diwali was to not scare the bats in their
areas.
While we appreciate the
residents of these villages who have been sensitive to birds and bats, we need
to question ourselves: Why aren’t we sensitive to babies, senior citizens,
patients in hospitals and pavement dwellers who get disturbed by the continuous
noise of the crackers? How many huts go up in flames when the firework from
nearby bungalows and apartments ‘misfires’ and lands on a thatched roof? These
questions raise the issue of our insensitivity towards other human beings.
Insensitivity to human
beings has spread like a pandemic all over the world. This year, especially,
when we hear the exploding crackers, we are painfully reminded of the real
explosions that are setting aflame innocent people of Gaza for the past one
month and the explosions that have butchered thousands in Ukraine from February
2022. How many more thousands of innocent lives have to be sacrificed, before
the leaders of Israel, Hamas and Russia become sensible enough to put an end to
these senseless massacres? Let us
redouble our efforts to pray for these leaders to be guided by the light of
reason.
We can consider it
providential that Deepavali this year, which focuses on light as the main
symbol and which calls us to celebrate the festival with some wisdom, coincides
with the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, in which the
liturgical readings talk of wisdom and the parable of how to get ready for a
celebration with lights – the ‘Parable of the Ten Virgins’ called for a wedding
function.
The first reading taken
from the Book of Wisdom (Wisdom 6:12-16) talks of the qualities of
wisdom. Seeking and finding wisdom is not a complicated task. Any one who seeks
wisdom can easily find her, since we can find her ‘sitting at our gates’.
Since wisdom is
available so easily – even to the point of sitting at our gates – there is a
danger of missing her. We pray that all of us recognize and appreciate the gift
of wisdom given to us by the Holy Spirit. We double our prayers for the world
leaders, most of whom seem to have lost the capacity to think. Their minds and
hearts are so filled up with selfishness, that there is hardly any room for the
Holy Spirit to enter. Imagine… if they are asked to report before God this very
day, how unprepared they would be!
Be wise, and be
prepared is the main focus of the Gospel passage this Sunday – the Parable of
the Ten Virgins – Matthew 25:1-13. Jesus talks of ten virgins – five of
whom were wise and the other five, foolish. This parable begins with one of the
ceremonies in a Jewish wedding, namely, the welcome given to the bridegroom. I
would like to go back in time and imagine how these ten maids would have
prepared for this wedding feast. Let us begin with the foolish ones. The moment
they heard that they were going to be bridesmaids, they would have been
thrilled. They would have made a mental list of what are to be done:
- To wear a particular dress with matching
jewels.
- To buy a pair of sandals to match the
dress and the jewels.
- To get the nails manicured.
- To buy a new lamp with exquisite art work.
Their list could have
been longer than this.
We can assume that the
wise ones also made their plans. But the first item on their list was: To
take extra oil for the lamp. The wise ones were very clear about what was
essential, while the foolish ones were busy with non-essentials. Most of the
events in our life are made easier or more complicated depending on how capable
we are in differentiating between the essentials and
the non-essentials – a clear sign of wisdom.
Here is a parable to
help us understand how we throw away the essentials and carry on with
non-essentials:
Two young men,
ambitious to make quick money, heard about a sage who knew the secret of
turning everything to gold. They went in search of him and found him living in
the midst of the forest. They fell at his feet. When the sage asked them what
they wanted, they told him, with fake humility, that they wished to attain true
wisdom. The sage accepted them as his disciples and gave each one of them a mud
pot with some grains and a stick. He asked them to dry the grains in the sun.
The young men hated
the job given by the sage, but went to dry the grains. They emptied the pot of
grain on the floor under the sunlight, and lazily stirred the grains with the
stick. Then, little by little, the grains began to turn into gold. Forgetting
themselves in blissful shock, the two threw away the stick in their hands,
collected the grains, now turned into gold, and ran away from the forest.
Little did they
realize that the stick in their hand had the power to turn everything it
touched into gold. How many of us have thrown away essentials and have
collected the non-essentials in our life?
A deeper analysis of
the Parable of the Ten Virgins gives us another insight. There was a delay in
the arrival of the bridegroom (Matthew 25:5). The foolish ones could have made
use of that delay to set things right, namely, to purchase more oil.
Unfortunately, their minds were still filled with non-essentials. They were
worried that their make-up was fading away with every passing minute. They did
not have the time or the energy to think of what they were lacking. By the time
they realised what they lacked, it was too late.
Differentiating the
essentials and non-essentials is not always easy. Sometimes essentials can
become non-essentials and vice-versa. All of us know how the luxury liner
‘Titanic’, the ‘un-sinkable ship’ sank in the icy cold waters of the Atlantic
Ocean, on its very first voyage. Many of the passengers in the Titanic were
very rich. While the ship was sinking, while the passengers were staring death
right in the face, they must have been enlightened about the essentials of
life. Here is a very ‘enlightening’ story from the final moments of the
Titanic.
A frightened woman
found her place in a lifeboat that was about to be lowered into the freezing
North Atlantic. She suddenly thought of something she needed, so she asked
permission to return to her stateroom before they cast off. She was granted
three minutes or they would leave without her. She ran across the deck that was
already slanted at a dangerous angle. She raced through the gambling room with
all the money that had rolled to one side, ankle deep. She came to her
stateroom and quickly pushed aside her diamond rings and expensive bracelets
and necklaces as she reached to the shelf above her bed and grabbed three small
oranges. She quickly found her way back to the lifeboat and got in.
Now, that seems
incredible because, thirty minutes earlier, she would not have chosen a crate
of oranges over the smallest diamond. But death had boarded the Titanic. One
blast of its awful breath had transformed all values. Instantaneously,
priceless things had become worthless. Worthless things had become priceless.
And in that moment, she preferred three small oranges to a box of diamonds.
As death boarded the
sinking Titanic and changed the priorities of the passengers, COVID-19 had
turned our priorities (or, at least, should have turned our priorities) in the
past two years. But, once the threat subsided, our leaders and the commercial
world have re-established the old priorities.
The market-driven
world wants us to return to the ‘new-normal’, meaning the same old world that
existed before COVID-19. But, deep down we know that we cannot live in the same
old reckless fashion of accumulation and self-centredness. If COVID-19 has not
rearranged our priorities still, we have missed out on a precious opportunity.
Do we have to wait
till death to figure out what is essential for a meaningful, peaceful, blissful
life? Most of us tend to postpone ‘the moment of truth’ till death. Most of us
would also presume that this moment of truth would come at the right time, meaning,
at a ripe old age. May the warning given by Jesus at the end of this parable,
wake us up from our selfish slumber: “Therefore keep watch, because you
do not know the day or the hour.” (Mt. 25:13)
பொதுக்காலம் 32ம் ஞாயிறு
நவம்பர் 12, இந்த ஞாயிறன்று, தீபங்களின் திருவிழா (தீபாவளி) இந்தியா முழுவதும் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. மற்றும்
உலகின் பல நாடுகளில் வாழும் இந்தியர்களாலும் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. தீபாவளித் திருநாளைக்
கொண்டாடும் அனைவருக்கும், இறைவன், ஒளிமயமான வாழ்வை வழங்கவேண்டுமென்று வாழ்த்துவோம், வேண்டுவோம். ‘ஒளிமயமான வாழ்வு’ என்று சொன்னதும், இல்லங்களில் ஒளி நிறைவதை மட்டும் எண்ணிப்பார்க்காமல், உள்ளங்களில் அறிவொளி பெறுவதையும்
எண்ணிப்பார்க்க, இந்தத் திருநாள் நம்மை அழைக்கிறது. ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும், இந்த விழா நெருங்கும் வேளையில், தீபாவளியை ஒரு சிலர் எப்படி அர்த்தமுள்ள முறையில், அறிவொளி பெற்ற
மனநிலையுடன் கொண்டாடுகின்றனர் என்பதைக் குறித்து சில செய்திகள் வெளியிடப்படுகின்றன.
கடந்த ஆண்டு, அக்டோபர் 24,
2022 அன்று ‘இந்தியா டைம்ஸ்’ இதழில் வெளிவந்த அத்தகைய ஒரு
செய்தி இதோ:
தமிழகத்தின் திருப்பத்தூர் மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள வேட்டங்குடிப்பட்டி
மற்றும் பெரிய கொள்ளுக்குடிப்பட்டி கிராமங்களில் வாழ்பவர்கள் பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு
தீபாவளியன்று பட்டாசு வெடிக்க வேண்டாம் என்று முடிவெடுத்தனர். இப்பகுதியில், வேட்டங்குடி
பறவைகள் சரணாலயம் அமைந்துள்ளது. சுவிட்சர்லாந்து, ரஷ்யா, இந்தோனேஷியா மற்றும் இலங்கையிலிருந்து குளிர்காலத்தில் புலம்பெயர்ந்துவரும்
பறவைகளுக்கு இச்சரணாலயம் இயற்கையான வாழ்விடமாகும். கடந்த 50 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக,
இந்த சரணாலயம் ஆண்டுக்கு 15,000 பறவைகளை ஈர்க்கிறது. புலம்பெயர்ந்த பறவைகளுக்கு பாதுகாப்பான
சூழலை உருவாக்கும் நோக்கத்துடன், வேட்டங்குடி, பெரிய கொள்ளுக்குடிப்பட்டி, சின்ன கொள்ளுக்குடிப்பட்டி ஆகிய கிராமங்களில் வாழும் மக்கள்,
அரை நூற்றாண்டு காலமாக, பட்டாசு இல்லா தீபாவளியை கொண்டாடி வருகின்றனர். தீபாவளி மட்டுமின்றி, திருமணம் மற்றும் கோவில் திருவிழாக்களின் போதும் கிராம மக்கள் பட்டாசு வெடிப்பதில்லை.
இதேபோல், ஈரோடு மாவட்டம், வெள்ளோடு பறவைகள் சரணாலயத்தை சுற்றியுள்ள
கிராம மக்களும் கடந்த 20 ஆண்டுகளாக பட்டாசு வெடிக்காமல் தீபாவளியை கொண்டாடி வருகின்றனர்.
பறவைகள் சரணாலயத்தை கொண்ட திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டம் கூத்தங்குளம் கிராம மக்கள் திருவிழாவின்
போது பட்டாசு வெடிப்பதை நீண்ட நாட்களாக தவிர்த்து வருகின்றனர். சேலம், பெரம்பூரில் உள்ள வௌவால் தோப்பு, நாகப்பட்டினம்,
சீர்காழி கோவில் அருகே உள்ள கிராமம், மற்றும், காஞ்சிபுரம் அருகே உள்ள விஷார் கிராமத்தில்
வாழ்பவர்கள், தங்கள் பகுதிகளில் உள்ள வௌவால்களை முன்னிட்டு, பட்டாசு வெடிக்காமல் தீபாவளியைக்
கொண்டாடி வருகின்றனர்.
பறவைகள் மற்றும் வௌவால்களுக்காக வெடிசப்தமில்லாத
தீபாவளியைக் கொண்டாடும் இந்தக் கிராம மக்களை நாம் பாராட்டுகிறோம். அதேவேளையில், நம்மை நாமே கேள்வி கேட்டுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். குழந்தைகள், மூத்த குடிமக்கள், மருத்துவமனைகளில் நோயாளிகள் மற்றும் நடைபாதையில் வாழ்பவர்கள் ஆகியோர், பட்டாசுகளின் தொடர் ஒலிகளால் அடையும் வேதனைகளைப்பற்றி நாம் ஏன் பேசுவதில்லை? அடுக்குமாடி குடியிருப்புகளிலும் பங்களாக்களிலும் விடப்படும் வானவேடிக்கைகள்,
அடுத்திருக்கும் சேரிகளிலுள்ள ஓலைக் கூரையில் விழுந்து, எத்தனை குடிசைகள் தீப்பிடித்து
எரிகின்றன? இத்தகையக் கேள்விகள், நம்மைச் சூழ்ந்திருக்கும் மனிதர்கள் மீது நாம்
கொண்டிருக்கும் அக்கறையின்மையை குத்திக்காட்டுகின்றன.
மனிதர்கள் மீது அக்கறையின்மை என்ற கொள்ளை நோய் கடந்த சில
ஆண்டுகளாக உலகெங்கும் பரவியுள்ளதை நாம் அறிவோம். குறிப்பாக, இந்த ஆண்டு,
வெடிக்கும் பட்டாசு சப்தங்களைக் கேட்கும்போது, கடந்த ஒரு மாதமாக, காசாவில் வாழும் அப்பாவி மக்களை, குழந்தைகளை, எரித்து
சாம்பலாக்கிவரும் உண்மையான வெடிகுண்டுகளும், 2022 பிப்ரவரி முதல், உக்ரைன் நாட்டில்
பல்லாயிரம் மக்களை கொன்றுவரும் வெடிகுண்டுகளும், நம் நினைவுகளை இரணமாக்குகின்றன. இஸ்ரேல்
அரசு, ஹமாஸ் குழு மற்றும் இரஷ்யாவின் தலைவர்கள், தங்களுக்கு இறைவன் வழங்கியுள்ள
அறிவைப் பயன்படுத்தி, இந்த முட்டாள்தனமான படுகொலையை நிறுத்தவேண்டும் என்று உருக்கமாகச்
செபிப்போம்!
ஒளியை மையப்படுத்திக் கொண்டாடப்படும் இவ்விழாவை, அறிவொளியுடன் கொண்டாடவேண்டும் என்று சிந்திக்கும் இவ்வேளையில், ஒளியை ஏந்த அறிவொளியுடன் செயல்பட்ட ஒரு சில இளம் பெண்களை மையப்படுத்தி இந்த
ஞாயிறு நற்செய்தி வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளதை அருள் மிக்க வாய்ப்பாக நாம் கருதலாம். மேலும், இன்றைய முதல் வாசகம், ஞானத்தின் ஒரு சில பண்புகளை வெளிச்சமிட்டுக் காட்டுகின்றன.
சாலமோனின் ஞானம் நூலிலிருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்ட முதல் வாசகம்
(சாலமோனின் ஞானம் 6:12-16) ஞானத்தின் பண்புகளைப் பற்றி பேசுகிறது. ஞானத்தைத்
தேடுவதும் கண்டடைவதும் கடினமான, சிக்கலான பணி அல்ல. ஞானத்தைத் தேடும் எவரும் அவளை எளிதில்
கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியும், ஏனென்றால் அவள் ‘நம்முடைய கதவு அருகில் அமர்ந்திருப்பதை’
நாம் காணலாம் என்று இவ்வாசகம் கூறுகிறது.
ஞானம் இவ்வளவு எளிதாகக் கிடைப்பதால் – அதாவது, நம் கதவு
அருகில் காத்திருக்கும் அளவுக்கு எளிதாகக் கிடைப்பதால் - ஞானத்தின் உயர்ந்த
மதிப்பை உணராமல் போகும் ஆபத்து உள்ளது. தூய ஆவியார் நம் உள்ளங்களில் பொழிந்துள்ள ஞானம்
என்ற கொடையை நாம் உணர்ந்து ஏற்று வாழும் வரத்திற்காக செபிப்போம். அதிலும்
சிறப்பாக, சிந்திக்கும் திறனையே இழந்தவர்கள்போல் நடந்துகொள்ளும் நம் உலகத் தலைவர்கள்,
அறிவொளி பெறுவதற்கு இன்னும் அதிகமாக நாம் செபிப்போம். தூய ஆவியானவர் நுழைய எந்த இடமும்
இல்லாத அளவுக்கு அவர்களின் மனங்களும் இதயங்களும் தான் என்ற அகந்தையால் நிரப்பப்பட்டுள்ளன.
இன்று அவர்கள் கடவுளுக்கு முன் கணக்கு ஒப்படைக்க செல்லவேண்டியிருந்தால், அவர்கள்
தகுந்த தயாரிப்புடன் இருப்பார்களா என்பது சந்தேகமே!
புத்திசாலியாக இருங்கள், தயாராக இருங்கள்
என்பது இந்த ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை நற்செய்தியில் - மத்தேயு 25:1-13 -
கூறப்பட்டுள்ள பத்து தோழியர் உவமையின் மையக் கருத்தாகும். “மணமகனை எதிர்கொள்ள மணமகளின்
தோழியர் பத்துப்பேர் தங்கள் விளக்குகளை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு புறப்பட்டுச் சென்றார்கள்” (மத்தேயு 25: 1) என்று தன் கதையை ஆரம்பிக்கும் இயேசு, உடனடியாக, அந்த பத்துத் தோழியரில், ஐந்து பேர் அறிவிலிகள்,
ஐந்து பேர் முன்மதி உடையவர்கள், என்ற முக்கிய வேறுபாட்டையும்
உணர்த்துகிறார். இவ்விரு குழுவினரும் நடந்துகொண்ட விதமே, உவமையின் கருவாக அமைந்துள்ளது. இவ்விரு குழுவினரும்
தங்களை எவ்விதம் தயாரித்திருப்பர் என்பதை, சிறிது
கற்பனை கலந்து சிந்திப்போம்.
முதலில், அறிவிலிகள் நடந்துகொண்ட விதத்தை அலசுவோம்.
மணமகளின் தோழியாக இருப்பதற்கு அழைப்பு வந்ததும், அறிவிலிகள் ஐவரும் தலைகால் புரியாத மகிழ்ச்சி
அடைந்திருப்பர். தாங்கள் என்னென்ன செய்யவேண்டும் என்ற பட்டியல் ஒன்றை, அவர்கள் தயார் செய்திருப்பர்.
தாங்கள் அணிந்து செல்லவேண்டிய உடைகள்,
நகைகள், அவற்றிற்குப் பொருத்தமாக வாங்கவேண்டிய காலணிகள்
என்று, தங்கள் வெளித்தோற்றத்தை மெருகூட்டும் ஒரு பட்டியலைத் தயார் செய்திருப்பர். அதேபோல்,
தாங்கள் எடுத்துச்செல்லும் விளக்கு எப்படிப்பட்டதாய் இருக்கவேண்டும், அந்த விளக்கைச்சுற்றி
எத்தனை மலர்கள் வைக்கப்படவேண்டும் என்றெல்லாம் அவர்கள் எண்ணிப் பார்த்திருப்பார்கள்.
அவர்கள் எண்ணத்தில் எழுதப்பட்ட அப்பட்டியலில், ஒரு முக்கியமான அம்சம் மறக்கப்பட்டது.
அதுதான்... விளக்கு எரிவதற்குத் தேவையான எண்ணெய்!
அறிவிலிகள்
தயார் செய்த இப்பட்டியலுக்கு முற்றிலும் மாறாக, முன்மதியுடைய ஐந்து பெண்களும்
திட்டமிட்டு, பட்டியல் ஒன்றை தயாரித்திருப்பார்கள்.
அவர்கள் பட்டியலில் 'விளக்கு எரிவதற்குத் தேவையான
எண்ணெய் எடுத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்' என்பது முதலாவதாகக் குறிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும்.
அவசியங்களா? ஆடம்பரங்களா? தேவையானவைகளா? தேவையற்றவைகளா? எதற்கு முதலிடம் கொடுக்கிறோம்
என்பதில் தெளிவாக இருந்தால், வாழ்வில் இழப்புக்களை சந்திக்கவேண்டியிருக்காது. வாழ்வில்
பல வேளைகளில், தேவையானதை தூக்கி எறிந்துவிட்டு, தேவையில்லாததை சுமந்து செல்கிறோம்
என்பதை உணர்த்தும் ஓர் உவமை இதோ:
சாதாரணப்
பொருள்களைத் தங்கமாய் மாற்றும் சக்திபெற்ற ஒரு முனிவர், காட்டில் வாழ்கிறார் என்ற செய்தி, ஊரெங்கும் பரவியது. இதைக் கேட்ட இருவர், அம்முனிவரைத் தேடி காட்டுக்குச் சென்றனர்.
அவரைக் கண்டதும், அவர் பாதத்தில் விழுந்து
வணங்கினர். தன்னைத் தேடிவந்ததன் காரணத்தை முனிவர் கேட்டபோது, இருவரும் மிகப் பணிவுடன், "குருவே, உங்களைப் போல உலகைத் துறந்து, உள்ளொளி பெறவே உங்களைத் தேடி வந்துள்ளோம்"
என்று பொய் சொன்னார்கள். அவர்களை தன் சீடர்களாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட முனிவர், அடுத்தநாள், ஒரு மண்கலம் நிறைய தானியங்களையும், ஒரு குச்சியையும் அவர்களிடம் கொடுத்து, சூரிய ஒளியில், தானியங்களைக் காயவைத்து வருமாறு பணித்தார்.
முனிவர்
தந்த பணியை அறவே வெறுத்த இருவரும், பொய்யானப் பணிவோடு, கலத்தையும், குச்சியையும் எடுத்துச் சென்றனர். கலத்தில்
இருந்த தானியங்களை, சூரிய ஒளியில் வைத்து, குச்சியால் அதைக் கிளறிய வண்ணம் அமர்ந்திருந்தனர்.
அப்போது, சிறிது, சிறிதாக, அந்த தானியங்கள் தங்கமாக மாறத் துவங்கின.
அந்த ஆனந்த அதிர்ச்சியில் தங்களையே மறந்த இருவரும், தங்கள் கையில் வைத்திருந்த குச்சியைத் தூர
எறிந்துவிட்டு, தங்கமாய் மாறியிருந்த
தானியங்களை அள்ளி எடுத்துகொண்டு, காட்டை விட்டு ஓடி மறைந்தனர்.
தொட்ட பொருள்கள் அனைத்தையும் தங்கமாய் மாற்றும் சக்தி, அவர்கள் கையிலிருந்த குச்சியில்தான் இருந்ததென்பதை
அவர்கள் உணரவில்லை.
நம்மில்
பலர், வாழ்வில் நல்லவை பலவற்றை
அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ள முடியாமல், எவ்விதம் தவறவிடுகிறோம்
என்பதைக் கூறும் உவமை இது. குறிப்பாக,
எதிர்பாராத
மகிழ்வு நம்மை அடையும்போது, அந்த மகிழ்வின் ஊற்று
எது என்பதையும், அந்த மகிழ்வை நிலைக்கச்
செய்யும் வழிகள் எவை என்பதையும் மறந்து, கணப்பொழுது
மகிழ்வில் கரைந்து போகும் ஆபத்து உண்டு.
பத்து தோழியர் உவமையை இன்னும் சிறிது ஆழமாக
அலசுகையில், மற்றோர் அம்சமும் தெளிவாகிறது.
மணமகன் வருவதற்கு காலம் தாழ்த்தப்பட்டது என்று உவமையில் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளது. அந்த நேரத்திலாவது அறிவிலிகளாய் இருந்த அந்த ஐவரின் எண்ணங்கள், அவசியத் தேவையான எண்ணெய் பக்கம் திரும்பியிருந்தால், தவறை அவர்கள் சரி செய்திருக்கலாம். காத்திருந்த
நேரத்திலும், அறிவிலிகளின் மனதில், அந்த காலத் தாமதத்தால் தங்கள் ஒப்பனை சிறிது, சிறிதாக கலைந்து வருகிறதே என்ற கவலைகூடியதால், அவசியமான எண்ணெயை அவர்களால் நினைத்துப்பார்க்க
முடியவில்லை. அந்தக் கவனக்குறைவால், அவர்கள் பங்கேற்க வந்திருந்த
திருமண விழாவையே இழக்க வேண்டியிருந்தது.
பல
வேளைகளில் தேவை என்று நாம் இறுக்கமாகப் பற்றிக்கொண்டிருப்பவை தேவையற்றவையாகவும், தேவையற்றதென ஒதுக்குவது தேவையுள்ளதாகவும்
மாறும் விந்தையும் நம் வாழ்வில் நடக்கும். முக்கியமாக, மரணம் நமக்கு முன் அமர்ந்திருக்கும்போது, நமது உண்மையான தேவைகள் என்னென்ன என்பதைப்பற்றி
நாம் அனைவருமே ஞான உதயம் பெற வாய்ப்பு உருவாகும்.
உலகத்தில்
எதுவும் இதனை மூழ்கடிக்க முடியாது என்ற இறுமாப்பான விளம்பரத்துடன் புறப்பட்ட பிரம்மாண்டமான
‘டைட்டானிக்’ (Titanic) கப்பல், தன் முதல் பயணத்திலேயே பனிப் பாறையில் மோதி
மூழ்கியது. அதில் பயணம் செய்தவர்களில் பலர், கோடீஸ்வரர்கள்.
மூழ்கிக் கொண்டிருந்த கப்பலில் இருந்த அவர்களுக்கு ஏற்பட்ட அனுபவங்களைப்பற்றி, அவர்கள் பெற்ற ஞான உதயங்களைப்பற்றி கதைகள்
பல சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளன. அந்தக் கதைகளில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.
மூழ்கும்
கப்பலில் இருந்து மக்களைக் காப்பாற்ற உயிர்காக்கும் படகுகளில் பயணிகள் ஏற்றப்பட்டனர்.
அவர்களில் ஒரு பெண், படகில் ஏறியபின், எதையோ
எடுத்து வருவதற்காக, தனது அறைக்கு மீண்டும்
ஓடிச்சென்றார். அவருக்கு மூன்று நிமிடங்களே வழங்கப்படும் என்ற எச்சரிக்கை வழங்கப்பட்டது.
அவர் மிக வேகமாக தன் அறையை நோக்கி, இடுப்பளவு நீரில் சென்றார்.
வழியில் பணமும், நகைகளும் நிரம்பிய பல
பைகள் தண்ணீரில் மிதந்ததைக் கண்டார். கப்பலில், அவர் தங்கியிருந்த அறையில், திறந்திருந்த பீரோவில், அவரது வைர நகைகள்
மின்னின. ஆனால், இவை எதுவும் அவர் கவனத்தை
ஈர்க்கவில்லை. அவர் கவனம் எல்லாம் பீரோவுக்கு மேல் ஒரு சிறு அட்டைப் பெட்டியில் இருந்த
ஒரு சில ஆரஞ்சு பழங்கள் மீது சென்றது. அவற்றை மட்டும் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, அவர் மீண்டும் அந்த உயிர்காக்கும் படகில்
ஏறினார்.
ஓரிரு
மணி நேரங்களுக்குமுன், கப்பல், நல்லமுறையில்
பயணம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தபோது, தன் வைரநகைகளைவிட, ஆரஞ்சு
பழங்களே அவசியமானவை, என்று அவர் சொல்லியிருந்தால், அவரைப் 'பைத்தியம்' என்று மற்றவர்கள் முத்திரை குத்தியிருப்பார்கள்.
ஆனால், கப்பல் மூழ்கும் வேளையில், அக்கப்பலுக்குள் மரணம் நுழைந்துவிட்டது என்பதை
உணர்ந்த வேளையில், வாழ்வின் அவசியங்கள் என்று
அவர்கள் எண்ணி வந்த பட்டியலில் பல எதிர்பாராத மாற்றங்கள் நிகழ்ந்தன.
2020
மற்றும் 2021 ஆகிய இரு ஆண்டுகள், மனித சமுதாயத்தை தலைகீழாக புரட்டிப்போட்ட மரணக் கிருமி, கோவிட்-19, நம் வாழ்வில் தேவையானவை, தேவையற்றவை எவை என்பதை தெளிவுபடுத்தியிருக்க வேண்டும். ஆனால்,
உலகின் தலைவர்களும், பெரு நிறுவனங்களும் இந்தக் கொள்ளைநோய்க்குப்பின் மீண்டும்
தங்கள் பழைய நிலைக்கே திரும்பியிருப்பது வேதனையைத் தருகிறது. நாம் வாழப்போகும் வாழ்வு, நீதி, சமத்துவம், பரிவு, உடன்பிறந்த
உணர்வு ஆகிய முக்கியத் தேவைகளை அடித்தளமாகக் கொண்டு கட்டப்படவேண்டும் என்பதைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள,
இறைவன் நமக்கு உள்ளொளியையும், அந்த உள்ளொளியின்படி நடக்க, தேவையான பரந்த, உறுதியான
மனதையும் தரவேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம்.
“தற்போது
நான் அதிகம் 'பிசி'யாக இருக்கிறேன். பல முக்கியமான அலுவல்கள்
உள்ளன. அவசியமானவை, அவசியமற்றவை, என்ற பாகுபாடுகளைச் சிந்திக்க, எனக்கு நேரமும் இல்லை, மன நிலையும் இல்லை. வாழ்வின் இறுதி காலத்தில், மரணம் நெருங்கும் வேளையில், இந்த வேறுபாடுகளையெல்லாம்
சிந்தித்துக் கொள்ளலாம்” என்று நமக்கு நாமே சொல்லிக்கொண்டால், இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் கூறும் இறுதி
வரிகள் நம்மைக் காப்பாற்றவேண்டும்: “விழிப்பாயிருங்கள்; ஏனெனில் இறைவன் வரும்
நாளோ வேளையோ உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாது.” (மத்தேயு 25:13)
