Both in word and deed!

James Tissot, Woe unto You, Scribes and Pharisees, Brooklyn Museum

31st Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Excellent sermon”, said the parishioner as she pumped the hand of the preacher. “Everything you said applies to some one or other I know.”
This is one of the mini-stories we find in the book “Taking Flight – A Book of Story Meditations” written by Anthony de Mello. The lady who sat through the sermon listening intently, did not learn anything for herself, but applied it to ‘so-and-so’ and to ‘so-and-so’. This is similar to what happens to me (and, I can safely say, for many priests) when I begin glancing through the Sunday Readings.

Every Sunday all the readings are directed towards ALL of us, Christians. We are called to reflect and see how the Word of God talks to each one directly. Usually, on a Sunday, as a priest, I would be more preoccupied with what I can tell others… my congregation. There was often a tinge of ‘better-than-thou’ feeling while reflecting on the Sunday readings. This feeling of superiority would be made stronger as I went up to the altar. Standing behind the altar or behind the pulpit, I used to feel a sense of power and security. From that lofty position, I could preach, admonish, tell others what they should and should not do.
Today, this Sunday, things seem very different. I feel as if all the Readings seem to be directed towards me. I feel as if I am spoken to. I feel as if I am standing in the court room with God and Jesus seated before me as Judges. And that is the reality of this Sunday.

When I am confronted with some uneasy Biblical passages that called for introspection, I have employed an escape route. I have tried to fit the given passage to others. Even today I tried this tactics saying that the Prophet Malachi as well as Jesus were saying these harsh words to the Priests, Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law of their times. Not to me… not to us, Priests living today.
Such a line of thought was snapped rudely. I was shaken out of my complacency, and my ‘better-than-thou’ attitude, by what we have heard for the past few years. The allegations levelled against priests and the leaders of the Church have shaken the whole Catholic Church in a deep, profound way. These allegations have set in motion some sincere search on the part of the hierarchy. It is quite a challenge to consider the theme of Priests and Leaders of the Church in a Sunday Liturgy in front of the people. A real examination of conscience in public. The court is in session!

A sincere examination of conscience would bring to light an endless list of faults, failures, mistakes, and crimes against God’s servants. Anyone who reads the 23rd Chapter of Matthew will be shocked by the stern language used by Jesus there. The first 12 verses of this chapter, given today as our gospel, are spoken to the people about the leaders. From verse 13 onwards, Jesus starts addressing the Pharisees and the Leaders directly and in a harsher language. Similarly, in the first reading from Prophet Malachi, today’s liturgy has omitted certain verses which are very strong. Setting aside the long list of faults against the priests, we can concentrate on two grave mistakes pointed out by Jesus in today’s Gospel. Jesus is very direct and forthright in pointing out these mistakes… no beating around the bush!

The first mistake… They preach but do not practice.
When I was reflecting on the idea of ‘preaching and not practicing’, an imaginary scene flashed across my mind. A Dad is talking very seriously to his teenage son about the dangers of smoking. The son is trying to be equally serious in listening, but fails miserably. Why? His attention is drawn to the lighted cigarette in his Dad’s hand. Yes, the Dad is trying to tell the son about how smoking can kill people, while taking a puff between sentences.
Jesus is telling his disciples and the simple minded people as to how they should deal with the misleading leaders: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.” (Mt. 23: 2-3)

The second mistake… They seek respect wherever they go.
Here is the observation of Jesus: “Everything they do is done for people to see;… they love the place of honour at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.” (Mt. 23: 5-7)
Priests and the Leaders of the Church deserve respect. But this respect must come spontaneously from the people. This respect should not be forced. There is a lot of difference between ‘People have respect for their Priests’ and ‘People have to respect their Priests’. Unfortunately, in a country like India, where hierarchy is very ingrained and pronounced in the social structure than in many other countries, we Priests have taken undue advantage of our position. I have seen, and been part of, some embarrassing moments when Priests have taken important seats at functions, pushing people to invent ways of honouring the ‘un-invited’ VIPs!

Priests who feel that respect is their birth-right, have a very wrong notion of themselves and their ministry of the Priesthood. Those who feel this way are, in my opinion, not very different from Narcissus who was convinced that he was the most beautiful person on earth and, therefore, did not have the time or the inclination to look at others. All of us know about Narcissus and his sad end when he was caught up in love of his own image in the stagnant water. What I did not know about Narcissus was the root Greek word from which this name was derived – namely, ‘Narke’, which means “sleep or numbness.” Drunk with pride of his own beauty, Narcissus was asleep or numb to so many other realities around him. Similarly, priests can be so caught up with their ‘superior’ position that they would probably drown in their own glory.

It would surely be a great help if all my brother priests and leaders of the Church read through the 23rd chapter of Matthew and make a serious examination of conscience!

Fortunately, all is not fire and brimstone in today’s liturgical readings. The First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians, given as our second reading, portrays some good traits of a true servant of God.
1 Thessalonians 2:6-10
We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority. Instead, we were like young children among you.
Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well. Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you. You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed.

I request you, Friends, to pray that all those who serve the Lord, including yours humbly, imbibe the spirit of Jesus who “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mt. 20:28)

John William Waterhouse – Narcissus (1903)
