In admiration of dishonesty?

The Unjust Steward

On September 15 we celebrated the Feast of the Mother of Sorrows. It was also the International Day of Democracy. One of the most popular definitions of democracy was given by Abraham Lincoln: “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people.” The moment I thought of this quote, my mind instinctively thought of another popular quote of Lincoln, namely: “You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.” (There are various versions for this quote, although the sense remains the same.) Is there an intrinsic connection between these two quotes of Lincoln, I wonder. Has ‘fooling all the people all the time’ got anything to do with democracy as we see it today?
As I was thinking of the combination 'deception and democracy', my mind also thought of the word ‘scam’ and I got a flood of information from the web about scams in human history. One of them was titled “THE BIGGEST SCAM IN HISTORY”. This article was about Federal Reserve, a private company of bankers in the U.S. with twelve branch banks… The opening line of this article goes like this: “Pay attention now, you're about to read about the biggest and most successful scam in History.” As I was browsing through this article, I came across some interesting data about Lincoln and Kennedy. I quote from this article:

On June 4, 1963, President Kennedy signed a Presidential decree, Executive Order 11110. This order virtually stripped the Federal Reserve Bank of its power to loan money to the United States Government at interest. President Kennedy declared the privately owned Federal Reserve Bank would soon be out of business. In less than five months after signing that executive order President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963.
Lincoln also took on the bankers and that brave bold step may also have cost him his life.
During the Civil War (from 1861-1865), President Lincoln needed money to finance the War for the North. The Bankers were going to charge him 24% to 36% interest. Lincoln was horrified and greatly distressed, and he would not think of plunging his beloved country into a debt that the country would find impossible to pay back.
So Lincoln advised Congress to pass a law authorizing the printing of full legal tender Treasury notes to pay for the War effort… The Treasury notes were printed with green ink on the back, so the people called them "Greenbacks". Lincoln had printed 400 million dollars worth of Greenbacks (the exact amount being $449,338,902), money that he delegated to be created, a debt-free and interest-free money to finance the War…Lincoln was assassinated shortly after the war and Congress revoked the Greenback Law and enacted, in its place, the National Banking Act…
When you follow the money you find there was no-one in the world who had a better reason to kill these two Presidents than the bankers. It seems inconceivable that anyone could still think there was no conspiracy in the assassination of JFK, especially when you consider the many people that were murdered or had suspicious deaths and who were associated in some way with Kennedy's assassination. Is this proof? NO. Is this strong circumstantial evidence? YOU DECIDE.

Under the banner of democracy, deceptions have taken place around the world. Lincoln knew this and hence his famous statement on 'fooling all the people all the time'. Fooling the world is the theme of this Sunday’s Readings. Both the first reading (The Book of Amos 8: 4-7) as well as the gospel of Luke (16: 1-13) talk of cheating, defrauding, deceiving…

The words deceive and cheat have a large family of words in English.
deceive (verb)
mislead, delude, swindle, trick, cheat, outwit, fool, rob, defraud, practice deceit, not play fair, victimize, hoax, betray, beguile, take advantage of, impose upon, entrap, ensnare, hoodwink, play one false, gull, cozen, dupe, lead astray, bamboozle, fleece, beguile out of, humbug, circumvent, get around, lie to, falsify accounts, pass off, … (I can assure you, it is a truly long list. I have given only one third of this list…) Please visit: http://thesaurus.yourdictionary.com/deceive)
cheat (verb)
defraud, swindle, dupe, trick, deceive, victimize, hoax, con*, bilk, gull, bamboozle, fleece, overcharge, shortchange, gyp*, gouge*, rook, chisel*, cozen, mulct, be dishonest, practice fraud, crib*, plagiarize, copy, be unfaithful, play around, fool around, two-time*, stack the deck, stack the cards, play with marked cards, load the dice…

Although cheating and deceiving are negative traits, one cannot but admire the various ways used for deceiving people. Every scam that comes to light seems to dazzle more brilliantly than the previous ones. Jesus talks in a tone of admiration about the dishonest steward. But, he does not simply stop with this admiration. He goes on to give some solutions as to how one can deal with money collected dishonestly.
The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. (Luke 16: 8-9)
Jesus was sure that the kingdom of heaven belonged to the poor. So, he suggests that we need to gain their friendship at the expense of the riches we have gathered. How to befriend the poor? The coming week’s Gospel will teach us… See you then!

You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.

(Tip of the iceberg)

"Give the devil his due" அதாவது, சாத்தானுக்குரிய பாராட்டைக் கொடு.

  1. Dear father,

u r great, u foretold the accidents tat will happen in the commonwealth games 2010 :). The very next day it happened.

(from vinavu)

Anyway! but after spending that 35,000 crores, still the bribery, accidents, leaky stadiums, shadowy contractors, money transfers, forged certification, inferior equipment are highlighting the papers. (CWG 2010 is a nice happening example for 'cheat and deceive') Im sure Jesus will be astonished seeing all these...

  2. Dear Prince,
When a tree stands leaning on one side, it will surely fall that way when there is a chance. This is what I had shared... surely not foretold. I wish I don't become a doomsday prophet. The Games has surely made us stand in shame in front of the world family.
