The Marble Marvel...

The year 1498 - 1499. A young man, 23 years of age, was engrossed in creating a marble marvel. The young man… Michelangelo. The marvel… Pieta. It is one the most complete works of Michelangelo. Even if one is not a believer, this statue of Mary carrying Jesus on her lap, after his death, would evoke feelings of devotion. I have stood before this statue spell bound many a time. As I stood there in rapt attention, questions have crept in my mind… questions as to how a mother could look so serene in her sorrow when her son was killed in such a brutal way.
There have been questions as to whether such a scene has any biblical backing. There seems to be no biblical or historical evidence that such a scene would have occurred on Calvary. This scene of Mary carrying the dead body of Jesus under the cross is a popular Christian tradition. This popular tradition has been rendered in a timeless way in Pieta by Michelangelo.
I have two reasons to talk about Pieta today. One: today is September 15, the Feast of the Sorrowful Mother Mary (Seven Dolours). Another reason is the interpretation Harold Kushner has given to this masterpiece in his book ‘The Lord Is My Shepherd’.

One of the greatest artistic creations ever fashioned by human hands is the Pieta of Michelangelo, a sculpture done in 1498 (some say 1499) when the artist was only twenty-three… There is no questioning its status as a masterpiece of artistic skill. There is only one problem with it: The scene it portrays probably never happened. If you reread the accounts of the Crucifixion in the four gospels, you will find that only in the Gospel of John is Mary even present at the Crucifixion, and even then she is sent away before Jesus dies. In the other three versions, Mary is not listed among the Galilean women witnessing Jesus’ death. All accounts of Jesus being taken down from the cross and buried mention other people being involved, but not his mother.
How can Michelangelo’s Pieta move us so deeply, how can it strike us as so right and so true, if it portrays an event that never took place? Let me suggest that the woman in the sculpture, the figure holding the broken body of the crucified Jesus, looking at it so sadly and tenderly, is not Mary but God, God in His feminine aspect, not the God who created the world and taught us how to live in it, but the God who created life in all of its fragile vulnerability, the way a mother creates life, a God who grieves for His children when they suffer, who suffers with them when they are cruel to one another, when they hurt and kill one another. Every mother, every parent who suffers the loss of a child is reenacting God’s grief at the death of any one of His children. As one of America’s most prominent clergymen, the Reverend William Sloane Coffin, insisted, reaffirming his faith after the death of his son in an accident, “God’s was the first heart to break.” This, then, might be the response of God to those who ask, “If the Lord is our shepherd, why do innocent people suffer and die?” God does not, God cannot promise us happy endings in a world where laws of nature and human cruelty take their daily toll. God’s promise is not that we will be safe, but that we will never be alone.

The Eastern spirituality and religious tradition can easily identify the feminine, motherly aspects of God. Three other details of this statue help us deepen the interpretation of God as the figure of the mother in Pieta. The fist detail is about the age of the woman in the statue. When Jesus died, Mary would have easily been around 50, but the face of the woman in this statue is around 20. Michelangelo wanted to show that Mary was the unsullied virgin and hence age would not have had any effect on her. But, this young face can also be interpreted as God, who is timeless, being depicted as ever young.
The second detail is the power of the woman. It is highly impossible for a lady to carry a full grown man on her lap as depicted in this statue. To make this possible, Much of Mary's body is concealed by her monumental drapery, and the relationship of the figures appears quite natural. Once again, if this lady is seen as God, then not only can God carry Jesus, but the whole suffering world on the lap.
The third detail is the way the two hands of the woman are positioned. The right hand seems to hold Jesus; but the left hand is a bit outstretched either inviting us to share this moment of agony, or, as if to call our attention to what is being laid out on her lap. It is as if the lady is telling us, “See what you have done to my son.” Once again, if this lady were to be God, we can surely remember the Gospel of John 3: 16. It is as if God were telling each one of us, “I loved the world so much as to give my only son. But, see what the world has done to him.” All the three details of this statue seem to fit the interpretation that the lady depicted in the statue of Pieta can be looked at as the symbol of the motherhood of God.

One more aspect of this statue, namely, the face of Jesus, will bring us closer to linking this statue with Psalm 23, especially the second verse: “He makes me lie down in green pastures.” The face of Jesus in this statue is extremely calm. Quite often the face of those who meet with tragic death is not that serene. But, Jesus’ face in this statue is a definition of serenity. We have seen the deep, comfortable sleep children enjoy while they are carried by one of the parents. This is how Jesus looks when he is carried on the lap of his mother. We have reflected on how the sheep, a highly nervous animal, requires a totally calm, quiet ambience to lie down. When one sees Jesus lying calmly on the lap of the lady, we are reminded of the Shepherd who could make this possible… the green pastures where he makes me lie down.
