Today we begin the Lenten Season, the season of grace, with Ash Wednesday. What better time to think of the last verse of Psalm 23 which gives us the assurance that ‘Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us (surround us… envelop us… pursue us) all the days of our life.’?
Although we have not spoken of this lately, we remember that Psalm 23 is primarily about the shepherd and the sheep. Mike Joyce, a Methodist Preacher in U.K. reflects on this last verse in terms of the shepherd, the sheep and TWO SHEEP DOGS Goodness and Mercy… Here is Mike…
Psalm 23 has been all about the care a good shepherd gives his sheep. The health and vitality of the sheep has been the shepherd's number 1 priority. In this last verse the care given the sheep is summed up.
I want to introduce you to two sheep dogs……God's two sheep dogs.
Remember, the shepherd is leading the flock…. I want you to imagine two dogs as rearguard.
God has two sheep dogs that always follow us and their names are Goodness and Mercy.
They are there not to scare us or hurt us, but to keep us in the fold and guide us to the next pastures.

This scene, this picture gives us a better understanding of the word – follow, surround, etc. God in front and His Goodness and Mercy behind us. A perfect picture of security! Although this is a consoling scene, there is still some hesitation on our part to enjoy this security. If I am enveloped by God’s goodness and mercy, then why do I not get all I want? Why do I meet with pain and loss? Mike Joyce has this answer:
A good parent does not fulfil every wish and whim a child has. Why? Because not everything will benefit the child. Sometimes a parent will need to say, ’No I don’t think you two should play with the carving knives’!! God knows what is good for us far better than we know ourselves. God's goodness is great… It’s most important that we understand that the promise of God's goodness does not mean a problem - free life.

We have spoken of this already in our earlier reflections. The Psalmist does not say that this world would be fair just because the shepherd is with us. He rather says that our view of the world will be different, more positive since the Lord is our Shepherd. St Paul reiterates this message in his letter to the Romans. Paul does not say that there would be no pain for those who love God, but that the love of God will help us bear, manage and transform pain.
Romans 8: 28-39 (Selected verses)
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose… What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?... Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?... For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Not a trouble-free, pain-free world; but an anxiety-free mind rooted in God’s love.
Another lovely thought about this verse comes from the word ‘hesed’ used by the psalmist in this verse. This word is translated differently to mean – loving kindness, unearned love, unassailable love, deep-rooted love… This list can go on. This word occurs in the Old Testament 248 times out of which, in the Book of Psalms alone it occurs 127 times and one such occasion is the last verse of Psalm 23. Here are a few instances where this word is used in the Old Testament:
Exodus 20: 1-6
And God spoke all these words: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery… I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
II Samuel 22: 1-2, 51
David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;… He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”
Jeremiah 31: 1-3
“At that time,” declares the LORD, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people… I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”
Hosea 2: 16-19
“In that day,” declares the LORD, “I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion.”
When the prodigal son returns home (Luke 15: 20-24), the father embraces him and begins a festive dinner in his honour. No questions… no explanations. That is the taste of ‘hesed’! Lenten Season is a good time to renew our belief that God’s ‘hesed’ follows us wherever we go!

"உண்மையிலேயே என் வாழ்நாள் எல்லாம் உம் அருள் நலமும், பேரன்பும் எனைப் புடைசூழ்ந்து வரும்..." என்று ஆரம்பமாகும் திருப்பாடல் 23ன் இறுதித் திருவசனத்தில் நம் தேடலைச் சென்ற வாரம் ஆரம்பித்தோம். "புடைசூழ்ந்து வரும்" என்ற தமிழ் சொற்றொடர் மதிப்பையும், பாதுகாப்பையும் உணர்த்தும் ஒரு சொற்றொடர் என்று நம் தேடலை நிறைவு செய்தோம். இப்புதனன்று நாம் துவங்கும் தவக் காலத்தில் நம்மைப் புடைசூழ்ந்து வரும் இறைவனின் அருளும், பேரன்பும் நம்மில் உருவாக்கும் மதிப்பை, பாதுகாப்பை இன்னும் ஆழமாய் உணர இந்தத் தேடலில் முயல்வோம்.
ஆடுகள், ஆயன் என்ற எண்ணங்களை நாம் கடந்த சில வாரங்கள் பேசவில்லையென்றாலும், திருப்பாடல் 23 ஆயனையும், ஆடுகளையும் மையப்படுத்திய ஒரு திருப்பாடல் என்பதை நீங்கள் மறந்திருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லை என்று நினைக்கிறேன். ஆயன், ஆடுகள் என்ற அந்தக் காட்சியை மீண்டும் நம் மனக்கண் முன் கொண்டு வருபவர் Mike Joyce என்ற Methodist போதகர். அவர் திருப்பாடல் 23ன் 6ம் திருவசனத்துடன் இணைத்து விவரிக்கும் இக்காட்சியை நாமும் கற்பனை செய்து பார்ப்போம். ஆடுகளை வழி நடத்திச் செல்லும் ஆயன் எப்போதும் அவைகளுக்கு முன் செல்வார் என்பதை நாம் ஏற்கனவே சிந்தித்திருக்கிறோம். ஆயன் முன்னே நடந்து செல்வதால், மந்தையின் பின்புறமாய் ஆடுகளுக்குப் பாதுகாப்பைத் தருவதற்கும், வழி தவறிச் செல்லும் ஆடுகளை மீண்டும் மந்தைக்குள் திருப்பிக் கொண்டு வருவதற்கும் ஒரு சில நாய்கள் ஆயனுக்கு உதவியாக இருக்கும்.
'நாய்' என்ற வார்த்தை ஒரு சில நேரங்களில் ஒரு வசைச்சொல்லாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகின்றது. ஆனால், நாயின் பல அற்புதக் குணங்களை நாம் அனைவரும் அறிவோம். நாய் என்று சொன்னதும் அதன் நன்றி நிறைந்த விசுவாசம் நம் நினைவுக்கு வரும். தனக்கு விசுவாசமான நாய் தன் பின்னே வருகிறது என்று தெரிந்தாலே போதும் நாம் நம்பிக்கையுடன் வெளியே செல்ல முடியும். அதேபோல், பார்வையிழந்தோர் பலருக்கு வழிகாட்டியாக நாய்கள் செயல்படுவதையும் நாம் பார்த்திருக்கிறோம். இந்தக் குணங்களை மட்டும் மனதில் இருத்தி, நம் கற்பனையைத் தொடர்வோம்.
Mike Joyce இந்தக் கற்பனையில் விவரிப்பது இதுதான். ஆயனாம் இறைவன் முன் செல்கிறார். ஆடுகளாகிய நாம் அவரைத் தொடர்கிறோம். அவ்வேளையில் ஆயனின் உற்றத் துணைகளான இரு நாய்கள் ஆடுகளாகிய நம்மைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வருகின்றன. அந்த நாய்களின் பெயர்கள்... அருள் நலம், பேரன்பு.
ஆயன் நமக்கு முன்னே... அவரது அருள் நலமும், பேரன்பும் நமக்குப் பின்னே... இதை விட வேறென்ன பாதுகாப்பு நமக்கு வேண்டும்? இவை இரண்டும் நம்மைத் துரத்திப் பயமுறுத்தவோ, விரட்டிப் பிடிக்கவோ, நம்மைப் பின்தொடர்வதில்லை. மாறாக, நாங்கள் எப்போதும் உங்கள் பின்னே பாதுகாப்பாய், உறுதுணையாய் வருகிறோம். பயமின்றி முன்னேறிச் செல்லுங்கள் என்று இவ்விரண்டும் நமக்குச் சொல்கின்றன. அழகான ஒரு கற்பனை காட்சியை மனதில் உருவாக்கும் வார்த்தைகள் இவை.
இறைவனின் அருள் நலமும், பேரன்பும் நம்மைத் தொடர்கின்றன; நம்மைப் புடைச் சூழ்ந்து வருகின்றன என்று சொல்லும்போது, ஆறுதலான எண்ணங்கள் மனதில் எழுந்தாலும், இதை முற்றிலும் ஏற்பதற்கு நமக்குள் ஒரு சில கேள்விகள், தயக்கங்கள் இருக்கத்தான் செய்கின்றன.
இறைவனின் அருள், அன்பு இவைகளால் நான் சூழப்பட்டிருந்தால், ஏன் நான் விரும்பியதெல்லாம் எனக்குக் கிடைப்பதில்லை? மாறாக, நான் விரும்பாத துன்பங்கள் ஏன் என்னை அடைகின்றன? என்பது முதல் கேள்வி, முதல் தயக்கம்.
அன்பை வாரி வழங்கும் பெற்றோர் இருக்கும்போது, குழந்தை கேட்பதெல்லாம் கிடைத்து விடுமா? குழந்தை கேட்பதையெல்லாம் கொடுக்கும் பெற்றோர், குழந்தைக்குத் தீங்கு விளைவிக்கக் கூடும். குழந்தை கேட்பது தவறானது என்று தெரிந்தால், பெற்றோர் அதை மறுப்பார்கள், அல்லது, குழந்தை கேட்பதற்குப் பதிலாக வேறொன்றைத் தருவார்கள். குழந்தை என்னதான் அடம் பிடித்தாலும், நல்ல பெற்றோர் தங்கள் முடிவில் உறுதியாய் இருப்பார்கள்.
இறைவனின் அருளும், அன்பும் நம்மைச் சூழ்ந்து வரும்போது, நாம் கேட்பதெல்லாம் கிடைத்து விடும்; நாம் பிரச்சனைகள் ஏதும் இல்லாத உலகத்தில் வாழ்வோம் என்பது தவறான கணிப்பு. திருப்பாடல் 23ன் மையக் கருத்தாக இதை அவ்வப்போது சொல்லியிருக்கிறோம். இப்போது மீண்டும் நினைவுபடுத்துகிறோம். ஆயனாம் இறைவன் நம்மை வழி நடத்துவதால், உலகம் ஆனந்தமயமாய் மாறி விடாது. ஆயன் நம்மோடு இருப்பதால், பிரச்சனைகள் நிறைந்த உலகத்தைக் காணும் நமது கண்ணோட்டம் மாறும். இன்பம், துன்பம் அனைத்திலும் கடவுள் நம்மோடு இருக்கிறார், இணைந்து செயல்படுகிறார் என்ற உறுதி பிறக்கும். இதுவே திருப்பாடல் 23ன் மையக் கருத்து. இதையே புனித பவுல் உரோமையருக்கு எழுதிய திருமுகத்தில் கூறியுள்ளார்:
உரோமையர் 8 : 28-39
மேலும், கடவுளிடம் அன்புகூர்பவர்களோடு, அதாவது அவரது திட்டத்திற்கேற்ப அழைக்கப்பட்டவர்களோடு, அவர்கள் நன்மைக்காகவே ஆவியார் அனைத்திலும் ஒத்துழைக்கிறார் என்பது நமக்குத் தெரியும்... இதற்குமேல் நாம் என்ன சொல்வோம்? கடவுள் நம் சார்பில் இருக்கும்போது, நமக்கு எதிராக இருப்பவர் யார்? கிறிஸ்துவின் அன்பிலிருந்து நம்மைப் பிரிக்கப் கூடியது எது? வேதனையா? நெருக்கடியா? இன்னலா? பட்டினியா? ஆடையின்மையா? இடரா? சாவா? எதுதான் நம்மைப் பிரிக்க முடியும்? வேறெந்தப் படைப்பும் நம் ஆண்டவர் கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவின் வழியாய் அருளப்பட்ட கடவுளின் அன்பிலிருந்து நம்மைப் பிரிக்கவே முடியாது என்பது என் உறுதியான நம்பிக்கை.
கடவுளின் அன்பு இருப்பதால் இவ்வுலகில் எந்தத் துன்பமும் இல்லை என்று பவுல் அடியார் சொல்லவில்லை. மாறாக, எந்தத் துன்பத்திலும் இறையன்பு இருந்தால் நம்மால் சமாளிக்க முடியும் எத்துன்பத்தையும் எதிர்கொள்ள முடியும் என்பதே அவரது அனுபவத்திலிருந்து பிறந்த உண்மைகள். ஆயன் நமக்கு முன்னே, அவரது உறுதுணையான நாய்கள் அருள் நலமும் பேரன்பும் நமக்குப் பின்னே இருந்தால் போதும்.
இறைவனின் அருள் நலமும், பேரன்பும் நமது பிறப்புரிமை அல்ல. நம் உழைப்பிற்குக் கிடைக்கும் சன்மானம் அல்ல... இவை முற்றிலும், முழுக்க, முழுக்க இறைவனின் தாராள மனதைக் காட்டும் ஒரு கோடை, ஓர் அடையாளம்.
திருப்பாடல் 23ன் இந்த வரியில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள 'பேரன்பு' என்ற வார்த்தைக்குப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ள எபிரேயச் சொல் ‘HESED'. இந்தச்சொல் பழைய ஏற்பாட்டில் 248 முறை பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவற்றில் திருப்பாடல்களில் மட்டும் இச்சொல் 127 முறைகள் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன. பழைய ஏற்பாட்டில் இச்சொல் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ள ஒரு சில பகுதிகள் இதோ:
விடுதலைப்பயணம் 20: 6
கடவுள் அருளிய வார்த்தைகள் இவையே: என்மீது அன்புகூர்ந்து என் விதிமுறைகளைக் கடைப்பிடிப்போருக்கு ஆயிரம் தலைமுறைக்கும் பேரன்பு காட்டுவேன்.
சாமுவேல் - இரண்டாம் நூல் 22: 1-2, 51
ஆண்டவர் தாவீதை அவருடைய எதிரிகள் கையினின்றும் சவுலின் கையினின்றும் விடுவித்தபோது அவர்கள் ஆண்டவருக்கு பண்ணிசைத்துப் பாடியது: ஆண்டவர் என் கற்பாறை; என் கோட்டை; என் மீட்பர்… தாம் ஏற்படுத்திய அரசருக்கு வெற்றியை அவளிப்பவர் அவரே! தாம் திருப்பொழிவு செய்த தாவீதுக்கு அவர்தம் மரபினருக்கும் என்றென்றும் பேரன்பு காட்டுபவரும் அவரே!
எரேமியா 31: 1-3
ஆண்டவர் இவ்வாறு கூறுகிறார்: அக்காலத்தில் இஸ்ரயேலின் குடும்பங்கள் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் நான் கடவுளாய் இருப்பேன்: அவர்கள் என் மக்களாய் இருப்பார்கள். ஆண்டவர் கூறுவது இதுவே: வாளுக்குத் தப்பிப் பிழைத்த மக்கள் பாலைநிலத்தில் என் அருளைக் கண்டடைந்தனர்: இஸ்ரயேலர் இளைப்பாற விரும்பினர். ஆண்டவர் அவர்களுக்குத் தொலையிலிருந்து தோன்றினார். உனக்கு நான் முடிவில்லாத அன்பு காட்டியுள்ளேன்: எனவே பேரன்பால் உன்னை ஈர்த்துள்ளேன்.
Hesed என்ற இந்த வார்த்தைக்கு ஆங்கிலத்தில் ‘Unearned love’ ‘Steadfast love’ ‘Unfailing love’ எனப் பல அர்த்தங்கள் உண்டு. இந்த வார்த்தையைத் தமிழில் சொல்ல வேண்டுமெனில், 'நெறி பிறழாத அன்பு' அல்லது 'தகுதி தரம் இவைகளை நோக்காமல் தரப்படும் அன்பு' என்று பொருள் கொள்ளலாம். பிச்சையிடும்போதும் பாத்திரம் அறிந்து பிச்சையிட வேண்டுமென்று சொல்லும் அறிவுரைகள் இந்த அன்புக்கு முன் மறைந்து விடும். ஒரு கோணத்தில் பார்த்தால் காரண காரியம் ஏதுமில்லாமல் காட்டப்படும் இந்த அன்பு பைத்தியக்காரத்தனமான அன்பாகத் தெரியலாம். தன்னை அவமானப்படுத்தி விட்டு, சொத்தில் பாதியை அழித்து விட்டு மீண்டும் வந்திருக்கும் ஊதாரி மகனிடம் எந்த ஒரு விளக்கமும் கேட்காமல், அவனைக் கண்டதும் அரவணைத்து, அவனுக்கு விருந்தொன்று ஏற்பாடு செய்தாரே தந்தை, அந்த அன்பைத்தான் இங்கு திருப்பாடல் ஆசிரியர் Hesed என்று குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.
எவ்வித காரணமும், முன்னறிவிப்பும் இல்லாமல் நம்மை வந்தடையும், நம்மை நிரப்பும், நம்மைத் தொடரும், நம்மைப் புடைச் சூழ்ந்து வரும் அன்பு இது. இறையன்பை நம் வாழ்வில் ஆழமாய் உணர, அவ்வன்பு நம்மை என்றும் தொடர்கிறது, நம்மைப் புடைசூழ்ந்து வருகிறது என்பதை நாம் துவங்கியிருக்கும் இத்தவக் காலத்தில் சிறப்பான முறையில் விசுவசிக்க முயல்வோம்.
