There was a cartoon I saw sometime back which showed a little boy kneeling by his bed saying his bedtime prayers. He prayed: "As you know God, Monday is the first day of school. I hope you won't lose sight of me in the crowd. Amen." “Don’t lose sight of me in the crowd” is the earnest prayer of human beings. We wish to stand out in a crowd, to be unique, special. The thirst for recognition is inherent in almost all of us. Thirst is one of the key themes in today’s gospel (John 4: 5-42) and, naturally, its answer – ‘water’. The Samaritan woman in today’s gospel stands as our representative before Christ, speaking for all of us.

This Sunday as well as the next two Sundays, the gospel texts will put us in touch with three of the most significant spiritual symbols of our Faith: water, light and life, symbols closely connected with Easter. Today’s gospel revolves around the well in Samaria, with a discourse on water. Next Sunday it will be the curing of the visually handicapped person, with thoughts on light. The third week – the final week before the Holy Week – it will be the miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead and the discourse on life.

All the three passages are taken from the Gospel of John. This gospel is not a simple narrative of Jesus’ life but a theological treatise as well. The conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman is one of the longest (if not the longest) conversation recorded in the four gospels. This conversation reveals quite a few lessons on oneself, Jesus and God. Quite often we tend to feel that we know enough about self, Jesus and God and thus lose out on newer insights. We need to keep ourselves open to surprises, since we know that ‘The God of Surprises’ is one of the basic, beautiful attributes of God!

Today’s gospel gives us a picture of Jesus who surprises us, even shocks us. He voluntarily initiates a conversation with a Samaritan woman who comes to the well at mid day. The woman’s late visit to the well (women, usually, gathered at the well early in the morning) may suggest that she was an outcast in the village, even among the Samaritans, because of her questionable living situation! Jesus begins this discourse expressing his need for water. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (John 4: 7) A simple request for water opens up quite many issues and ultimately ends on sublime themes related to God and worship. Here is the first lesson from today’s gospel: that no place is alien to talk about God. We know that in villages, the well, the tea shop and the tree in the village square are good spots for gossips, political opinions and even philosophical thoughts. Jesus shows us that a well-side conversation can also be profoundly divine!

The initial reaction of the Samaritan woman is a grim reminder of how the human family has not progressed in certain areas even after centuries. The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (John 4: 9) You-and-I distinction even in the case of a basic need. Thirst knows no caste and religion. Hence, it would be highly impossible for any one to refuse water to the one who is thirsty. But, with water becoming more and more a private property and hence scarce and costly, it is becoming more and more delicate to request water and to share water even in dire situations.

Two years back, the great Indian environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna, has said: “Nations all across the world are facing a water crisis that is deepening with the passing of each day… This situation demands immediate notice and remedial measures from our governments and policymakers. Otherwise, mankind has to face the wrath of an inevitable third world war on the issue of water.” http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/enviornment

As we are reflecting on the gift of water, we are agonisingly aware of different disturbing news items that come out of Japan every hour. The latest one from BBC (27 March 2011) goes like this: Radioactivity in water at reactor 2 at the quake-damaged Fukushima nuclear plant has reached 10 million times the usual level, company officials say. Human family is paying the price of misusing the natural gifts God gave us.

The thirst of Jesus and the hesitation of the Samaritan woman still echo in different parts of the world. The great natural gift of God – water – has, unfortunately, been used as a political and caste weapon dividing people. The conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman also highlights another division among people. Not only the gifts of God, but God himself/herself is divided under various pretexts. Jesus is rather emphatic in saying that true God and true worship do not divide the people: “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem… Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (John 4: 21-24)

I don’t think that any one could make this clearer and easier than Jesus. Curiously, Jesus begins this statement with a request… almost a plea: “Woman, believe me…” It is hard for us to believe that God can be worshipped in such simplicity. But, that is the true worship ‘the Father seeks’.

Lenten season is a call to conversion. Let us be converted to using God’s gifts properly without avarice and monopoly. Let us be converted not to divide God into various human slots, but allow God to be God and try to worship God in Spirit and in Truth.

வார இதழ் ஒன்றில் வெளியான நகைச்சுவையுடன் நமது ஞாயிறு சிந்தனையை ஆரம்பிப்போம். ஒரு சிறுவன் இரவு படுக்கப் போகுமுன், முழந்தாள் படியிட்டு செபிக்கிறான். "இறைவா, நாளை நான் பள்ளிக்குச் செல்லும் முதல் நாள். அங்கிருக்கும் கூட்டத்தில் என்னைப் பார்க்காமல் இருந்து விடாதேயும்." என்று செபித்துவிட்டு, படுத்துக் கொள்கிறான். சிறிது நேரத்தில், என்ன நினைத்தானோ தெரியவில்லை, மீண்டும் படுக்கையைவிட்டு எழுந்து முழந்தாள்படியிட்டு செபிக்கிறான்: "இறைவா, சொல்ல மறந்துவிட்டேன். நாளை நான் பள்ளிக்கு ஒரு சிவப்புச் சட்டை அணிந்திருப்பேன். கவனமாய்ப் பார்க்கவும்." என்று கடவுளிடம் தன் அடுத்த நாள் அடையாளத்தைக் கோடிட்டுக் காட்டுகிறான்.

கூட்டத்தில் என்னைப் பார்க்காமல் இருந்துவிடாதீர்; மக்கள் மத்தியில் என்னை மறந்துவிடாதீர்... என்று இந்தச் சிறுவனைப் போல் நாம் வாய் வார்த்தைகளால் வேண்டவில்லை என்றாலும், பல முறை இது போல் உணர்ந்திருக்கிறோம். கூட்டத்தில் ஒருவராய் கரைந்து விடவோ, மறக்கப்படவோ நம்மில் யாருக்கும் விருப்பம் இருப்பதில்லை. பிறர் நம்மைக் கண்டுகொள்ள வேண்டும், நம்மை எப்போதும் நினைவில் வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற தாகம் மனிதர்களாகிய நமக்குப் பொதுவான ஒரு தாகம். நம் எல்லார் மனதிலும் இருக்கும் இத்தகைய ஏக்கங்களின், தாகத்தின் ஒரு பிரதிநிதியாக இன்று ஒரு பெண்ணை நாம் நற்செய்தியில் சந்திக்கிறோம்.

ஒரு பெண்... ஒரு சமாரியப் பெண்... யூத சமுதாயத்தால் ஓரம் கட்டப்பட்டவர். அதுவும் இந்தப் பெண் ஐந்து ஆண்களுடன் வாழ்ந்துவிட்டு, இப்போது ஆறாவது மனிதரோடு வாழ்பவர். சமுதாயம், சமயம், நன்னெறி என்று நாம் உருவாக்கியிருக்கும் அனைத்து அளவுகோல்களின்படி, ஒரு மனிதப் பிறவியாகக் கருதப்படுவதற்குகூட தகுதியற்ற இப்பெண்ணை நற்செய்தியாளராக உருமாற்றுகிறார் இயேசு.

உயிர்ப்புத் திருவிழாவை நோக்கி நாம் தவக்காலப் பயணத்தை மேற்கொண்டுள்ளோம். இந்த உயிர்ப்புப் பெருவிழாவுடன் தொடர்புடைய மூன்று அடையாளங்கள்... தண்ணீர், ஒளி, வாழ்வு. இந்த ஞாயிறன்றும், இதைத் தொடரும் இரு ஞாயிறுகளிலும் இம்மூன்று அடையாளங்களை வலியுறுத்தும் நற்செய்தி வாசகங்கள் நமக்குத் தரப்பட்டுள்ளன. இயேசு சமாரியப் பெண்ணைச் சந்திப்பதும், தண்ணீர் குறித்து பேசுவதும் இந்த வாரம் தரப்பட்டுள்ள நிகழ்ச்சி. பார்வை இழந்த ஒருவருக்கு இயேசு பார்வை வழங்குவதும், ஒளியைக் குறித்துப் பேசுவதும் அடுத்த வாரம் நாம் வாசிக்கும் நற்செய்தி. இறந்த லாசரை உயிர்ப்பித்து, வாழ்வைப் பற்றி இயேசு பேசுவது மூன்றாம் வாரம் தரப்பட்டுள்ள ஒரு நற்செய்தி. இம்மூன்று நிகழ்ச்சிகளும் யோவான் நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்டவை.

நான்கு நற்செய்திகளிலும் யோவான் நற்செய்தி தனித்துவம் மிக்கது. இந்த நற்செய்தியில் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ள நிகழ்ச்சிகளுடன் சேர்த்து, இறையியல் பாடங்களை நேரடியாகவும், மறைமுகமாகவும் கூறியுள்ளார் யோவான். இறையியல் பாடங்கள் என்றால் இறைவனைப் பற்றியது மட்டுமல்ல, நம்மைப் பற்றியும் தெளிவுபடுத்தும் பகுதிகள் இவை. இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு சமாரியப் பெண் ஒருவரைச் சந்திக்கும் அந்த நிகழ்வின் மூலம் இயேசுவைப்பற்றி, கடவுளைப்பற்றி, நம்மைப்பற்றி யோவான் தெளிவுபடுத்தும் ஒரு சில உண்மைகளை நாம் அறிந்து கொள்ள முயல்வோம்.

இப்படி நான் சொன்னதும் ஒரு சிலருக்கு மனதில் ஒரு கேள்வி எழுந்திருக்க வாய்ப்புண்டு. கடவுளைப் பற்றி, இயேசுவைப் பற்றி, நம்மைப் பற்றி புதிதாக எதைத் தெரிந்துகொள்ளப் போகிறோம்? என்ற கேள்வி அது. மிக ஆபத்தான ஒரு கேள்வி. இந்தக் கேள்விக்குப் பின்னணியாக நம் மனதில் ஓடும் எண்ணம் என்ன? கடவுளைப் பற்றியும், நம்மைப் பற்றியும் இன்னும் தெரிந்து கொள்ள ஒன்றும் புதிதாய் இல்லை என்ற எண்ணம். இந்த எண்ணத்தால், நம் மனங்களை மூடி வைக்கிறோம், எத்தனையோ நல்ல பாடங்களை நாம் இழந்திருக்கிறோம்.

இது இப்படித்தான், இதற்குமேல் இதில் ஒன்றுமில்லை என்று வாழ்வின் பல விஷயங்களுக்கு நாம் இலக்கணம் வகுத்து, எல்லைக் கோடுகளை வரைந்து, அடையாள அட்டைகள் ஒட்டி, முத்திரை குத்தி நம் எண்ணங்களையும், மனதையும் சுருக்கி விடுகிறோம். முக்கியமாக, கடவுளுக்கு இப்படி இலக்கணங்களும், எல்லைகளும் வகுப்பது நம்மிடையே இருக்கும் ஒரு போக்கு. இன்று இந்தப் போக்கிற்கு, இந்த சோதனைக்கு இடம் கொடுக்காமல், கடவுளைப் பற்றியும், நம்மைப் பற்றியும் புதிதாக என்ன தெரிந்து கொள்ள முடியும் என்று முயன்று பார்ப்போம். இதுபோன்ற முயற்சிகளுக்கு தவக்காலம் நல்லதொரு தருணம்.

பலநூறு அம்சங்கள், இலக்கணங்கள், கடவுளுக்கு உண்டு என்பது நமக்குத் தெரியும். அவருக்குள்ள ஒரு முக்கிய, அழகான அம்சம்... அவர் ஆச்சரியங்களின் கடவுள்... The God of Surprises. நாம் கடவுள் மேல் சுமத்தும் இலக்கணங்களை, வரம்புகளை மீறி, நம்மை ஆச்சரியத்தில் ஆழ்த்துவது அவரது அழகு. நற்செய்தியில் இன்று நாம் சந்திக்கும் இயேசு நம்மை ஆச்சரியத்தில் ஆழ்த்துகிறார்... சொல்லப்போனால், நம்மை அதிர்ச்சியில் ஆழ்த்துகிறார்.

இன்றைய நற்செய்தியின் முதல் பகுதியில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள இயேசுவின் செயல்பாடுகள் இவை:

• இயேசு சமாரியர்கள் வாழும் பகுதிக்குச் சென்றார்.

• அப்பகுதியில் உணவு வாங்கி வர தன் சீடர்களை அனுப்பி வைத்தார்.

• அங்கிருந்த ஒரு கிணத்தருகே களைப்புடன் அமர்ந்தார்.

• அங்கு வந்த ஒரு சமாரியப் பெண்ணுடன் பேசினார்.

• அதுவும், நடத்தைச் சரியில்லாத ஒரு சமாரியப் பெண்ணிடம் வலியச் சென்று பேசினார்.

ஒரு சராசரி யூதன் செய்யக்கூடாத பல செயல்களை இயேசு துணிந்து செய்தார். இயேசு அந்தப் பெண்ணிடம் வலியச் சென்று தன்னை அறிமுகப்படுத்திய வார்த்தைகள்: "குடிக்க எனக்குத் தண்ணீர் கொடும்." வெகு எளிதாக, மேலோட்டமாக ஆரம்பமான இந்த உரையாடல் வெகு ஆழமான உண்மைகளைத் தொடுகின்றது. சமாரியப் பெண்ணைப் பற்றி, தன்னைப் பற்றி, தந்தையாம் கடவுளைப்பற்றி பல அற்புதமான உண்மைகள் இவை.

நற்செய்தியில் காணப்படும் அனைத்து உரையாடல்களிலும் யோவான் நற்செய்தி 4ம் பிரிவில் இயேசுவுக்கும், சமாரியப் பெண்ணுக்கும் இடையே நிகழும் இந்த உரையாடல்தான் மிக நீளமானது. இந்த உரையாடலின் முடிவில் சமுதாயத்தின் ஓரத்தில் வாழ்ந்த ஒரு பெண் அந்த ஊரையே இயேசுவின் பாதம் கொண்டு வந்து சேர்த்த பெருமையைப் பெறுகிறார். இறைவனைப் பற்றிப் பேச யாருக்குச் சிறிதும் தகுதியில்லை என்று உலகம் ஒதுக்கி வைத்ததோ, அவர்களே இயேசுவை உலகறியச் செய்த தலைசிறந்த சாட்சிகள் ஆயினர் என்பதை விவிலியம் பல இடங்களில் கூறியுள்ளது.

இந்த நற்செய்திப் பகுதி இன்றைய உலகில் நாம் சந்திக்கும் பல பிரச்சனைகளைக் கிளறி விடுகிறது. பல பாடங்களையும் சொல்லித் தருகிறது. கிணற்று மேட்டில் நடக்கும் ஓர் உரையாடல் இது. கிணற்று மேடு, டீக்கடை பெஞ்ச், ஊரின் நடுவே உள்ள ஆலமரத்தடி என்று வெகு சாதாரண, வெகு எளிய இடங்களில் சமுதாயம், அரசியல், வாழ்வின் அடிப்படைத் தத்துவங்கள் அலசப்படுவது நமக்கெல்லாம் தெரிந்ததுதான். இந்த மிகச் சாதாரணமான இடங்களில் இறைவனைப் பற்றிய பாடங்களையும் கற்றுக் கொள்ளலாம் என்பதை இயேசு இன்று நமக்கு உணர்த்துகிறார்.

தவித்த வாய்க்குத் தண்ணீர் தருவதிலும் சமுதாயப் பிளவுகள் குறுக்கிடுவதை இந்த உரையாடல் தெளிவாக்குகிறது. இந்தப் பிளவுகளைக் கடந்து செல்லும்போதுதான் உயிருள்ள ஊற்று நீரை நாம் பருக முடியும் என்பதை இயேசு தெளிவாக்குகிறார். தண்ணீரைப் பற்றி பேசும்போது, பல சமுதாய எண்ணங்களும் மனதில் அலைமோதுகின்றன. இறைவன் தந்த அற்புத கொடைகளில் ஒன்றான தண்ணீரைப் பல வழிகளில் நாம் சீரழித்துள்ளோம். தண்ணீர் தொடர்பாக மனித சமுதாயம் இழைத்துள்ள பல குற்றங்களில், சமுதாயத்தைப் பிரிக்கும் ஓர் ஆயுதமாக தண்ணீரை நாம் மாற்றியுள்ளோம் என்பதே, என்னைப் பொறுத்தவரை, நமது பெரும் குற்றம். "மூன்றாம் உலகப் போர் என்று ஒன்று எழுந்தால், அது குடிக்கும் நீராலேயே உருவாகும்" என்று இந்தியாவின் மற்றொரு காந்தி என்று அழைக்கப்படும் சுந்தர்லால் பகுகுணா கூறியுள்ளார். இதே அச்சத்தை உலகத் தலைவர்கள் பலரும் வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளனர்.

ஒவ்வொரு சாதிக்கும் ஒரு கிணறு, ஒரு குளம் என்று பிரித்து தண்ணீரை ஒரு சாதிய ஆயுதமாகப் பயன்படுத்தும் இந்தியாவுக்கும், இன்னும் பிற நாடுகளுக்கும் கிணற்றடியில் நடத்திய ஒரு பாடத்தின் வழியாக இயேசு சாட்டையடி வழங்குகிறார். இறைவனின் கொடையான தண்ணீரை சாதி, இனம் என்ற கூறுகளில் பிரித்துள்ளது போதாதென்று, இறைவனையும் பல காரணங்களுக்காகப் பிரித்து கூறுபோடும் மடமை முயற்சிகளில் மனித சமுதாயம் ஈடுபட்டுள்ளதையும் இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் சுட்டிக் காட்டுகிறார். இறைவனைத் தொழுவதற்கு மலைகளையும், எருசலேம் புனித நகரையும் தேடாதீர்கள் என்று கூறும் இயேசு, தொடர்ந்து அப்பெண்ணிடம் கூறும் அழகிய எண்ணங்களை இன்றைய நற்செய்தியிலிருந்து கேட்போம்:

யோவான் நற்செய்தி 4 : 21-24 இயேசு சமாரியப் பெண்ணிடம், “அம்மா, என்னை நம்பும். காலம் வருகிறது. அப்போது நீங்கள் தந்தையை இம்மலையிலோ எருசலேமிலோ வழிபடமாட்டீர்கள்... உண்மையாய் வழிபடுவோர் தந்தையை அவரது உண்மை இயல்புக்கேற்ப உள்ளத்தில் வழிபடுவர். தம்மை வழிபடுவோர் இத்தகையோராய் இருக்கவே தந்தை விரும்புகிறார். கடவுள் உருவமற்றவர். அவரை வழிபடுவோர் அவரது உண்மை இயல்புக்கு ஏற்ப உள்ளத்தில்தான் வழிபட வேண்டும்” என்றார்.

கடவுளையும், இயேசுவையும் சிறைப்படுத்தும் பல இலக்கணங்கள், எல்லைக் கோடுகள் அனைத்தும் இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் அழிக்கப்படுகின்றன. அதேபோல், மனிதர்கள் மீது நாம் சுமத்தும் பாகுபாடுகள், முத்திரைகள் எல்லாம் அழிக்கப்படுகின்றன. சமூகத்தால் தாழ்த்தப்பட்ட சமாரியப் பெண்ணை, நன்னெறி அளவுகோலின்படி கீழ்த்தரமானவர் என்று முத்திரை குத்தப்பட்ட சமாரியப் பெண்ணை தன் நற்செய்தியை அறிவிக்கும் பணியாளராய் இயேசு மாற்றும் அற்புதத்தை இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் காண்கிறோம்.

இலக்கணங்களை, வரம்புகளைத் தாண்டிய உண்மை இறைவனைக் கண்டுகொள்ளவும், தவித்த வாய்க்குத் தண்ணீர் தருவதிலும் பிளவுகளை வளர்த்து வரும் இந்த சமுதாயம், பாகுபாடுகளைத் தாண்டி உயிருள்ள ஊற்றான இறைவனைப் பருகவும் இந்த தவக்காலம் நமக்கு உதவுவதாக.
