Last week I was in a hurry to declare that our ‘mini-series’ on the Sermon on the Mount came to an end. But it was wrong. Only this week we come to the last passage of this series. I was careless and hasty. Haste makes waste, says one of the proverbs. One of the Tamil proverbs talks of the different challenges faced by individuals when they have to build a house or conduct a wedding. “Kalyaanam pannippaar; veettaik kattippaar.”(“கல்யாணம் பண்ணிப்பார்; வீட்டைக் கட்டிப்பார்”) I am not sure why building a house is coupled with conducting a wedding. I guess both these efforts require lots of planning, calculations, guts and above all, PATIENCE. The proverb ‘haste makes waste’ serves as a warning while building a house or arranging a wedding.
Today’s gospel, (Matthew 7:21-27) the final section of the Sermon on the Mount, is an exhortation of Jesus on how to integrate the Word of God in our life. Jesus places before us two lessons… call them challenges, if you like.
The first challenge from Jesus relates to a burning issue of our present day world. It is a virtual salvo from Jesus: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
I wish to rephrase these words: Any one who takes up the name of the Lord in vain, even to the point of using it to kill, will not find a place in God’s Kingdom. We are sadly aware of the recent murder of Shahbaz Bhatti, the Minister for Minorities in Pakistan on March 2, 2011. The reason behind the murder could be the abolition of the Blasphemy Law he was fighting for. We are also aware that just two months back, in January 2011, the governor of Pakistan's Punjab province, Salman Taseer, was shot dead by one of his bodyguards in the capital, Islamabad. Malik Mumtaz Hussein Qadri, the person who killed Taseer, said in one of his television interviews, “Salman Taseer is a blasphemer and this is the punishment for a blasphemer." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-12111831
The name of God has been used by almost every religion for very ungodly reasons in history. If these persons, who justify their murders in God’s name, were to appear before God, they would probably hear God telling them: “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!” (Matt. 7:23)
The second challenge posed by Jesus in today’s gospel relates to how we need to put into practice God’s words: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matt. 7:24-27)
While browsing the internet for my reflections on this passage from Matthew, I came across two stories: Here's a story about a wealthy man who laid blueprints before his secretary and told him, "I'm leaving on an extended trip and I want you to build a house for me in that location above the lake. I'll be gone for ten months. Here are the plans and specs and funds to cover the cost." The astute employee saw a chance to feather his own nest. He hired a crooked contractor, employed unskilled labor whenever possible, and put cheap, inferior material into the building. When it was finished, it had the appearance of magnificence, but was really a poorly constructed, insubstantial shell. When the employer returned and went with the secretary to see the building, which looked quite beautiful overlooking the lake, he asked the secretary, "What do you think of it?" "I think it's wonderful," the secretary replied. "I'm glad you like it. I'm retiring from business; I won't need your services much longer and I want you to have a nice house in your retirement. This house is yours."

I wish to extend this story a bit… When the secretary heard of this ‘gift’ from his employer, he would have cursed himself as well as the employer. For the rest of his life he would have felt miserable for having built his own house so badly. If only the secretary had known that this house was going to be his, what would he have done differently? Everything… starting from making sure that the land on which he is building the house is free from legal hassles and is also fit for construction. In short, he would have made sure that his house stood on rock-solid-foundation. Once the foundation was laid, then the secretary would have made sure that every brick, every timber used in the house was of good quality. He would have been totally involved in his work as an artist involved in his creation.
The second story is about a person who was totally involved in building his house, starting from abiding by all the rules of construction. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew destroyed thousands of homes in South Florida. Yet in an area where the wreckage looked like a war zone, one house remained standing, still firmly anchored to its foundation. When a reporter asked the homeowner why his house had not been blown away, he replied, "I built this house myself. I also built it according to the Florida state building code. When the code called for 2" x 6" roof trusses, I used 2" x 6" roof trusses. I was told that a house built according to code could withstand a hurricane-- and it did."

Jesus has compared construction of a house to constructing our lives according to God’s words. There are two levels in building a house. Building it by the rules is the basic, safe level. But, there is the higher level where one builds the house with utmost care and involvement. Such an involvement is seen when one builds the house for oneself. Jesus invites us to build our lives on His words with total involvement.
Although today’s gospel passage talks about the HOW of building our lives on God’s words, Jesus also gives us a hint about the WHEN of building our lives. No sane person would build a house during a storm or floods. We build houses when things are normal and take refuge in the house during the time of rain and storm. Quite many of us seek God’s words when a storm rages in our lives. This may or may not help. But, if we had built our lives on God’s words on a daily basis, then it would help us during the storms that rage in our lives. Jesus makes a specific reference to this in today’s Gospel: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” (Matt.7: 24-25)

"கல்யாணம் பண்ணிப்பார்; வீட்டைக் கட்டிப்பார்" என்பது நமக்கெல்லாம் தெரிந்த ஒரு பழமொழி. கல்யாணம் பண்ணுவதையும், வீட்டைக் கட்டுவதையும் இந்தப் பழமொழியில் ஏன் இணைத்தனர் என்பது எனக்குச் சரியாகத் தெரியவில்லை. ஆனால், இரு முயற்சிகளிலும் திட்டமிடுதல், நுண்ணிய கவனம், வரவுக்கு உள்ளான செலவு, தடைகளைத் தாண்டும் திறமை, என்ற பல குணங்கள் தேவைப்படுகின்றன. இவை எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலாக திருமணம், வீடு இரண்டும் வெற்றிகரமாக பல காலம் நீடிக்க பொறுமையும் தேவை என்பதைக் கூறவே இவ்விரண்டையும் இப்பழமொழியில் இணைத்துள்ளனர் என்பது என் கணிப்பு.
அவசரமாக முடிக்கப்படும் திருமணங்கள், அவசரமாகக் கட்டப்படும் வீடுகள் அதிகக் காலம் தாக்குப்பிடிக்காது என்பதையும் நாம் அறிவோம். இன்றைய நற்செய்தி இந்தப் பழமொழியை நம் நினைவுக்குக் கொண்டு வருகிறது.
கடந்த ஐந்து வாரங்களாய் நாம் சிந்தித்து வரும் இயேசுவின் மலைப்பொழிவுப் பகுதி இன்று ஆறாம் வாரமாக ஒரு நிறைவுக்கு வருகிறது. இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு நமக்கு முன் இரு பாடங்களை வைக்கிறார். அவைகளைச் சவால்களாகவும் நாம் காணலாம்.
ஆண்டவரே, ஆண்டவரே என்று கடவுளின் பெயரைச் சொல்வதால் மட்டும் விண்ணரசில் நுழைய முடியாது. இறைவனின் விருப்பப்படி நடப்பதே விண்ணரசின் கதவுகளை நமக்குத் திறக்கும்... என்பது இயேசு நமக்குத் தரும் முதல் சவால். நாம் வாழும் இன்றையச் சூழலில் நமக்கு அதிகம் தேவையான ஒரு பாடம் இது. கடந்த வாரம் புதன்கிழமை பாகிஸ்தானின் சிறுபான்மைத்துறை அமைச்சராய் பணி புரிந்த Shahbaz Bhatti அடையாளம் தெரியாத ஒரு குழுவால் பட்டப்பகலில் கொலை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார் என்பது நாம் அறிந்த செய்தி. இறைவனின் பெயரால், மதங்களின் பெயரால் மனித வரலாற்றில் நடந்துள்ள பாதகச்செயல்களை எண்ணிப்பார்க்க இயேசுவின் இந்தச் சவால், இந்த எச்சரிக்கை ஒரு வாய்ப்பைத் தருகிறது.
கடவுளின் பெயரை உச்சரித்தபடியே மனித உயிர்களைப் பறித்தவர்கள் எல்லா மதங்களிலும் இருந்துள்ளனர். இன்றும், கடவுளின் பெயரால், இந்த இரத்த வரலாற்றைத் தொடர்ந்து எழுதி வரும் அடிப்படைவாதக் குழுவினரை இந்நேரத்தில் நினைத்துப் பார்ப்போம். அவர்களுக்காக இறைவனின் கருணையை வேண்டுவோம். இறைவனின் பெயரைச் சொல்லியபடியே, கொலை வெறியையும், வெறுப்பையும் உலகில் விதைக்கும் இவர்கள் கடவுளின் திருமுன் செல்லும்போது, "உங்களை எனக்குத் தெரியவே தெரியாது. நெறிகேடாகச் செயல்படுவோரே, என்னைவிட்டு அகன்று போங்கள்" (மத்தேயு 7: 23) என்று அவர் கூறும் வாய்ப்பு அதிகம் உண்டு.
இயேசு இன்று நமக்கு வழங்கும் இரண்டாவது சவாலில் நாம் இன்றைய சிந்தனையை அதிகம் செலவழிப்போம். இறைவார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு செயல்படுகிறவர்கள், பாறை மீது வீடு கட்டுகிறவர்களுக்கு ஒப்பாவர் என்பது இயேசு நமக்குத் தரும் இரண்டாம் பாடம்.
செல்வந்தர் ஒருவர் தன்னிடம் பல ஆண்டுகள் பணி செய்த மேனேஜரை ஒரு நாள் கூப்பிட்டார். "நான் ஓராண்டு வெளிநாடு செல்கிறேன். நான் திரும்பி வருவதற்குள் எனக்காக ஓர் அழகான வீட்டை நீங்கள் கட்டி முடிக்கவேண்டும். ஏரிக்கரை ஓரமாக எனக்குச் சொந்தமான இடத்தில் இந்த வீட்டைக் கட்டுங்கள்." என்று சொல்லி, அந்த வீட்டுக்கான வரைப்படம், அதற்கு ஆகும் தொகை அனைத்தையும் மேனேஜரிடம் கொடுத்தார்.
கோணல் புத்தியுடைய மேனேஜர், முதலாளி கொடுத்தத் தொகையில் பாதிக்கு மேல் சுருட்டிக் கொண்டு, மீதித் தொகையில் ஒரு பரிதாபமான, உறுதியில்லாத வீட்டைக் கட்டினார். வெளியிலிருந்து பார்க்க மிக அழகாக, பிரம்மாண்டமாகத் தெரிந்தது அந்த வீடு.
ஓராண்டு சென்று முதலாளி மீண்டும் வந்தார். தான் கட்டி முடித்திருந்த அந்த வீட்டுக்கு முதலாளியை அழைத்துச் சென்றார் மேனேஜர். முதலாளி அந்த வீட்டைப் பார்த்து பிரமித்துப் போனார். பார்க்க அவ்வளவு பகட்டாக இருந்தது அது. அவர் மேனேஜர் பக்கம் திரும்பி, "வீடு பிரமாதமா இருக்கிறதே!" என்று வியந்தார். மேனேஜரும் ஒப்புக்காக, "பிரமாதமான வீடு சார். இதில் வாழ கொடுத்து வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும்." என்று கொஞ்சம் மிகைப்படுத்திப் பேசினார்.
"அந்த கொடுத்து வைத்தவர் நீங்கள் தான் மேனேஜர். இந்த வீடு இன்று முதல் உங்களுக்குத் தான்." என்று முதலாளி சொன்னதும், மேனேஜர் முகம் பயத்தில் வெளிறிப் போனது. "ஆம், மேனேஜர். இதை ஓர் ஆச்சரியமான பரிசாக உங்களுக்குத் தர வேண்டுமென்றுதான் முன்னதாகவே இதை உங்களிடம் சொல்லவில்லை. இத்தனை ஆண்டுகள் எனக்காக உழைத்தீர்கள். அடுத்த ஆண்டு ஓய்வெடுக்கப் போகிறீர்கள். உங்கள் உழைப்பிற்கான என் எளிய பரிசு இது." என்றார் முதலாளி. மேனேஜரால் ஒன்றும் பேச முடியவில்லை. அவர் ஆனந்த அதிர்ச்சியில் வாயடைத்து நிற்பதாய் முதலாளி நினைத்துக் கொண்டார்.
மேனேஜரின் வாய்தான் பேசமுடியாமல் போனதே தவிர அவரது மனம் ஆயிரம் பேசியிருக்கும். "அடப்பாவி... இந்த வீடு எனக்குத்தான்னு முன்னாலேயே சொல்லியிருந்தா, எப்படி கட்டியிருப்பேன்… இப்ப வந்து சொல்றியே." என்ற பாணியில் அவர் மனம் முதலாளியை வசை பாடியிருக்கும். தன்னுடைய வீட்டைத் தானே அரைகுறையாய் கட்டிவிட்டோமே என்று மீதி நாட்கள் அவர் வருந்தியிருக்க வேண்டும்.
கதையை இப்படி நினைத்துப் பார்ப்போம். முதலாளி வெளிநாடு போவதற்கு முன், மேனேஜரிடம் தன் நிலம், வரைபடம், பணம் எல்லாவற்றையும் கொடுத்து "மேனேஜர், உங்களுக்கு ஒரு வீடு கட்டிக் கொள்ளுங்கள்." என்று சொல்லியிருந்தால், மேனேஜர் என்ன செய்திருப்பார்?
முதலாளி தனக்குக் கொடுத்த நிலம் சட்டப்படி அவருடையதுதானா என்பதில் ஆரம்பித்து, அந்த நிலம் வீடு கட்டுவதற்கு ஏற்ற நிலமா என்ற அனைத்து ஆராய்ச்சிகளையும் நுணுக்கமாகச் செய்திருப்பார். அதற்குப் பின், அங்கு வைக்கப்படும் ஒவ்வொரு செங்கலுக்கும் கணக்குப் பார்த்து, வீட்டின் ஒவ்வொரு அங்குலமும் உறுதியாக இருக்கிறதா என்பதையும் கவனமாகப் பார்த்து அந்த வீட்டைக் கட்டியிருப்பார்.

Florida மாநிலத்தில் விதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள அனைத்து விதிமுறைகளையும் சிறிதும் பிசகாமல் நான் இந்த வீட்டைக் கட்டினேன். இப்பகுதியில் சூறாவளிகள் அடிக்கடி வீசுவதால், இம்மாநிலத்தின் விதிமுறைகள் படி கட்டப்படும் வீடுகள் சூறாவளியை எதிர்க்கும் சக்தி பெற்றவை என்று என்னிடம் அதிகாரிகள் சொன்னதால், நான் இப்படி கட்டினேன். அவர்கள் சொன்னது உண்மைதான்." என்று அவர் செய்தியாளர்களிடம் சொன்னார்.
இந்த இரு கதைகளையும் இணைத்து சிந்திக்க முயல்வோம். வீடு கட்டுவதையும், இறைவார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு வாழ்வைக் கட்டுவதையும் இயேசு ஒப்புமைப்படுத்தியுள்ளார். இவ்விரண்டிலும் இரு நிலைகளை நாம் சிந்திக்க முயல்வோம். வீடு கட்டுவதில் மிகவும் அடிப்படையான ஒரு நிலை எந்த ஒரு சட்டத்தையும் மீறாமல் வீட்டைக் கட்டுவது. இரண்டாவது நிலை... சிறிது உயர்ந்த நிலை. கலைஞன் ஒருவன் கலை படைப்பை உருவாக்குவதைப் போல் முழு ஈடுபாட்டுடன் கவனமாய் வீட்டைக் கட்டுவது இரண்டாவது நிலை.
இயேசு நம்மை இரண்டாவது நிலைக்கு அழைக்கிறார். இறைவனை ஆண்டவரே, ஆண்டவரே என்று அழைப்பதைவிட, இறைவனின் வார்த்தைகளை வெறும் மந்திரங்களாகச் சொல்லிக் கொண்டிருப்பதைவிட, அவ்வார்த்தைகளை வாழ்வாக அமைத்துக் கொள்வதே சிறந்ததென இயேசு கூறுகிறார். ஒருவர் தனக்கென முழு ஈடுபாட்டுடன் அமைத்துக் கொள்ளும் வீட்டைப் போன்றது அந்த வாழ்வு. இறைவார்த்தை என்ற உறுதியான பாறை மீது கட்டப்பட்டிருக்கும் அந்த வாழ்வில் வீசும் எந்த வித சூறாவளியும் நம்மைச் சாய்த்துவிட முடியாது என்பது இயேசு தரும் உறுதி.
இறுதியாக ஒரு சிந்தனை... பெருமழை, வெள்ளம், சூறாவளி நேரங்களில் யாரும் வீடுகள் கட்டுவது இல்லை. நல்ல, அமைதியானச் சூழலில் உறுதியாய் கட்டப்பட்ட வீடுகளில் சூறாவளியின்போது நாம் நம்பிக்கையுடன் தஞ்சம் புக முடியும். அதேபோல், வாழ்வில் சூறாவளிகள் வீசும்போது மட்டும் இறைவார்த்தைகளின் படி வாழ்வை அமைத்துக் கொள்ள முடியுமா என்பது சந்தேகம்தான். நமது அனுதின வாழ்வில் இறைவார்த்தைகளை உள்வாங்கி, அந்த அடித்தளத்தில் வாழ்வை நாம் கட்டிஎழுப்பினால், வீசும் சூறாவளிகள் நேரத்தில் அந்த வாழ்வில் நாம் நம்பிக்கையுடன் தஞ்சம் புக முடியும்.
இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் கூறியுள்ள வார்த்தைகளுடன் நம் சிந்தனைகளை நிறைவு செய்வோம்:
நான் சொல்லும் இவ்வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு இவற்றின்படி செயல்படுகிற எவரும் பாறை மீது தம் வீட்டைக் கட்டிய அறிவாளிக்கு ஒப்பாவார். மழை பெய்தது; ஆறு பெருக்கெடுத்து ஓடியது; பெருங்காற்று வீசியது; அவை அவ்வீட்டின் மேல் மோதியும் அது விழவில்லை. ஏனெனில் பாறையின்மீது அதன் அடித்தளம் இடப்பட்டிருந்தது.

"கல்யாணம் பண்ணிப்பார்; வீட்டைக் கட்டிப்பார்" என்பது நமக்கெல்லாம் தெரிந்த ஒரு பழமொழி. கல்யாணம் பண்ணுவதையும், வீட்டைக் கட்டுவதையும் இந்தப் பழமொழியில் ஏன் இணைத்தனர் என்பது எனக்குச் சரியாகத் தெரியவில்லை. ஆனால், இரு முயற்சிகளிலும் திட்டமிடுதல், நுண்ணிய கவனம், வரவுக்கு உள்ளான செலவு, தடைகளைத் தாண்டும் திறமை, என்ற பல குணங்கள் தேவைப்படுகின்றன. இவை எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலாக திருமணம், வீடு இரண்டும் வெற்றிகரமாக பல காலம் நீடிக்க பொறுமையும் தேவை என்பதைக் கூறவே இவ்விரண்டையும் இப்பழமொழியில் இணைத்துள்ளனர் என்பது என் கணிப்பு.
அவசரமாக முடிக்கப்படும் திருமணங்கள், அவசரமாகக் கட்டப்படும் வீடுகள் அதிகக் காலம் தாக்குப்பிடிக்காது என்பதையும் நாம் அறிவோம். இன்றைய நற்செய்தி இந்தப் பழமொழியை நம் நினைவுக்குக் கொண்டு வருகிறது.
கடந்த ஐந்து வாரங்களாய் நாம் சிந்தித்து வரும் இயேசுவின் மலைப்பொழிவுப் பகுதி இன்று ஆறாம் வாரமாக ஒரு நிறைவுக்கு வருகிறது. இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இயேசு நமக்கு முன் இரு பாடங்களை வைக்கிறார். அவைகளைச் சவால்களாகவும் நாம் காணலாம்.
ஆண்டவரே, ஆண்டவரே என்று கடவுளின் பெயரைச் சொல்வதால் மட்டும் விண்ணரசில் நுழைய முடியாது. இறைவனின் விருப்பப்படி நடப்பதே விண்ணரசின் கதவுகளை நமக்குத் திறக்கும்... என்பது இயேசு நமக்குத் தரும் முதல் சவால். நாம் வாழும் இன்றையச் சூழலில் நமக்கு அதிகம் தேவையான ஒரு பாடம் இது. கடந்த வாரம் புதன்கிழமை பாகிஸ்தானின் சிறுபான்மைத்துறை அமைச்சராய் பணி புரிந்த Shahbaz Bhatti அடையாளம் தெரியாத ஒரு குழுவால் பட்டப்பகலில் கொலை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளார் என்பது நாம் அறிந்த செய்தி. இறைவனின் பெயரால், மதங்களின் பெயரால் மனித வரலாற்றில் நடந்துள்ள பாதகச்செயல்களை எண்ணிப்பார்க்க இயேசுவின் இந்தச் சவால், இந்த எச்சரிக்கை ஒரு வாய்ப்பைத் தருகிறது.
கடவுளின் பெயரை உச்சரித்தபடியே மனித உயிர்களைப் பறித்தவர்கள் எல்லா மதங்களிலும் இருந்துள்ளனர். இன்றும், கடவுளின் பெயரால், இந்த இரத்த வரலாற்றைத் தொடர்ந்து எழுதி வரும் அடிப்படைவாதக் குழுவினரை இந்நேரத்தில் நினைத்துப் பார்ப்போம். அவர்களுக்காக இறைவனின் கருணையை வேண்டுவோம். இறைவனின் பெயரைச் சொல்லியபடியே, கொலை வெறியையும், வெறுப்பையும் உலகில் விதைக்கும் இவர்கள் கடவுளின் திருமுன் செல்லும்போது, "உங்களை எனக்குத் தெரியவே தெரியாது. நெறிகேடாகச் செயல்படுவோரே, என்னைவிட்டு அகன்று போங்கள்" (மத்தேயு 7: 23) என்று அவர் கூறும் வாய்ப்பு அதிகம் உண்டு.
இயேசு இன்று நமக்கு வழங்கும் இரண்டாவது சவாலில் நாம் இன்றைய சிந்தனையை அதிகம் செலவழிப்போம். இறைவார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு செயல்படுகிறவர்கள், பாறை மீது வீடு கட்டுகிறவர்களுக்கு ஒப்பாவர் என்பது இயேசு நமக்குத் தரும் இரண்டாம் பாடம்.
செல்வந்தர் ஒருவர் தன்னிடம் பல ஆண்டுகள் பணி செய்த மேனேஜரை ஒரு நாள் கூப்பிட்டார். "நான் ஓராண்டு வெளிநாடு செல்கிறேன். நான் திரும்பி வருவதற்குள் எனக்காக ஓர் அழகான வீட்டை நீங்கள் கட்டி முடிக்கவேண்டும். ஏரிக்கரை ஓரமாக எனக்குச் சொந்தமான இடத்தில் இந்த வீட்டைக் கட்டுங்கள்." என்று சொல்லி, அந்த வீட்டுக்கான வரைப்படம், அதற்கு ஆகும் தொகை அனைத்தையும் மேனேஜரிடம் கொடுத்தார்.
கோணல் புத்தியுடைய மேனேஜர், முதலாளி கொடுத்தத் தொகையில் பாதிக்கு மேல் சுருட்டிக் கொண்டு, மீதித் தொகையில் ஒரு பரிதாபமான, உறுதியில்லாத வீட்டைக் கட்டினார். வெளியிலிருந்து பார்க்க மிக அழகாக, பிரம்மாண்டமாகத் தெரிந்தது அந்த வீடு.
ஓராண்டு சென்று முதலாளி மீண்டும் வந்தார். தான் கட்டி முடித்திருந்த அந்த வீட்டுக்கு முதலாளியை அழைத்துச் சென்றார் மேனேஜர். முதலாளி அந்த வீட்டைப் பார்த்து பிரமித்துப் போனார். பார்க்க அவ்வளவு பகட்டாக இருந்தது அது. அவர் மேனேஜர் பக்கம் திரும்பி, "வீடு பிரமாதமா இருக்கிறதே!" என்று வியந்தார். மேனேஜரும் ஒப்புக்காக, "பிரமாதமான வீடு சார். இதில் வாழ கொடுத்து வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும்." என்று கொஞ்சம் மிகைப்படுத்திப் பேசினார்.
"அந்த கொடுத்து வைத்தவர் நீங்கள் தான் மேனேஜர். இந்த வீடு இன்று முதல் உங்களுக்குத் தான்." என்று முதலாளி சொன்னதும், மேனேஜர் முகம் பயத்தில் வெளிறிப் போனது. "ஆம், மேனேஜர். இதை ஓர் ஆச்சரியமான பரிசாக உங்களுக்குத் தர வேண்டுமென்றுதான் முன்னதாகவே இதை உங்களிடம் சொல்லவில்லை. இத்தனை ஆண்டுகள் எனக்காக உழைத்தீர்கள். அடுத்த ஆண்டு ஓய்வெடுக்கப் போகிறீர்கள். உங்கள் உழைப்பிற்கான என் எளிய பரிசு இது." என்றார் முதலாளி. மேனேஜரால் ஒன்றும் பேச முடியவில்லை. அவர் ஆனந்த அதிர்ச்சியில் வாயடைத்து நிற்பதாய் முதலாளி நினைத்துக் கொண்டார்.
மேனேஜரின் வாய்தான் பேசமுடியாமல் போனதே தவிர அவரது மனம் ஆயிரம் பேசியிருக்கும். "அடப்பாவி... இந்த வீடு எனக்குத்தான்னு முன்னாலேயே சொல்லியிருந்தா, எப்படி கட்டியிருப்பேன்… இப்ப வந்து சொல்றியே." என்ற பாணியில் அவர் மனம் முதலாளியை வசை பாடியிருக்கும். தன்னுடைய வீட்டைத் தானே அரைகுறையாய் கட்டிவிட்டோமே என்று மீதி நாட்கள் அவர் வருந்தியிருக்க வேண்டும்.
கதையை இப்படி நினைத்துப் பார்ப்போம். முதலாளி வெளிநாடு போவதற்கு முன், மேனேஜரிடம் தன் நிலம், வரைபடம், பணம் எல்லாவற்றையும் கொடுத்து "மேனேஜர், உங்களுக்கு ஒரு வீடு கட்டிக் கொள்ளுங்கள்." என்று சொல்லியிருந்தால், மேனேஜர் என்ன செய்திருப்பார்?
முதலாளி தனக்குக் கொடுத்த நிலம் சட்டப்படி அவருடையதுதானா என்பதில் ஆரம்பித்து, அந்த நிலம் வீடு கட்டுவதற்கு ஏற்ற நிலமா என்ற அனைத்து ஆராய்ச்சிகளையும் நுணுக்கமாகச் செய்திருப்பார். அதற்குப் பின், அங்கு வைக்கப்படும் ஒவ்வொரு செங்கலுக்கும் கணக்குப் பார்த்து, வீட்டின் ஒவ்வொரு அங்குலமும் உறுதியாக இருக்கிறதா என்பதையும் கவனமாகப் பார்த்து அந்த வீட்டைக் கட்டியிருப்பார்.
இப்படி கவனமாகக் கட்டப்பட்ட ஒரு வீட்டைப் பற்றிய மற்றொரு செய்தி இது. 1992ம் ஆண்டு Hurricane Andrew என்ற சூறாவளி தென் Floridaவின் பல பகுதிகளைத் தரைமட்டமாக்கிவிட்டுச் சென்றது. சூறாவளி வீசி ஓய்ந்தபின், அந்தப் பகுதி போரில் குண்டு வீசி அழிந்துபோன ஒரு பகுதி போல காட்சி அளித்தது. ஒரே ஒரு வீடு மட்டும் பாதிப்பு அதிகம் இன்றி நின்றது. அவ்வீட்டுத் தலைவனைப் பத்திரிக்கையாளர்கள் பேட்டிக் கண்டனர். "உங்கள் வீடு மட்டும் எப்படி இந்த சூறாவளியைச் சமாளித்தது?" என்று அவர்கள் கேட்டனர். "இது எனக்கென்று நானே கட்டிய வீடு. Florida மாநிலத்தில் விதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள அனைத்து விதிமுறைகளையும் சிறிதும் பிசகாமல் நான் இந்த வீட்டைக் கட்டினேன். இப்பகுதியில் சூறாவளிகள் அடிக்கடி வீசுவதால், இம்மாநிலத்தின் விதிமுறைகள் படி கட்டப்படும் வீடுகள் சூறாவளியை எதிர்க்கும் சக்தி பெற்றவை என்று என்னிடம் அதிகாரிகள் சொன்னதால், நான் இப்படி கட்டினேன். அவர்கள் சொன்னது உண்மைதான்." என்று அவர் செய்தியாளர்களிடம் சொன்னார்.
இந்த இரு கதைகளையும் இணைத்து சிந்திக்க முயல்வோம். வீடு கட்டுவதையும், இறைவார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு வாழ்வைக் கட்டுவதையும் இயேசு ஒப்புமைப்படுத்தியுள்ளார். இவ்விரண்டிலும் இரு நிலைகளை நாம் சிந்திக்க முயல்வோம். வீடு கட்டுவதில் மிகவும் அடிப்படையான ஒரு நிலை எந்த ஒரு சட்டத்தையும் மீறாமல் வீட்டைக் கட்டுவது. இரண்டாவது நிலை... சிறிது உயர்ந்த நிலை. கலைஞன் ஒருவன் கலை படைப்பை உருவாக்குவதைப் போல் முழு ஈடுபாட்டுடன் கவனமாய் வீட்டைக் கட்டுவது இரண்டாவது நிலை.
இயேசு நம்மை இரண்டாவது நிலைக்கு அழைக்கிறார். இறைவனை ஆண்டவரே, ஆண்டவரே என்று அழைப்பதைவிட, இறைவனின் வார்த்தைகளை வெறும் மந்திரங்களாகச் சொல்லிக் கொண்டிருப்பதைவிட, அவ்வார்த்தைகளை வாழ்வாக அமைத்துக் கொள்வதே சிறந்ததென இயேசு கூறுகிறார். ஒருவர் தனக்கென முழு ஈடுபாட்டுடன் அமைத்துக் கொள்ளும் வீட்டைப் போன்றது அந்த வாழ்வு. இறைவார்த்தை என்ற உறுதியான பாறை மீது கட்டப்பட்டிருக்கும் அந்த வாழ்வில் வீசும் எந்த வித சூறாவளியும் நம்மைச் சாய்த்துவிட முடியாது என்பது இயேசு தரும் உறுதி.
இறுதியாக ஒரு சிந்தனை... பெருமழை, வெள்ளம், சூறாவளி நேரங்களில் யாரும் வீடுகள் கட்டுவது இல்லை. நல்ல, அமைதியானச் சூழலில் உறுதியாய் கட்டப்பட்ட வீடுகளில் சூறாவளியின்போது நாம் நம்பிக்கையுடன் தஞ்சம் புக முடியும். அதேபோல், வாழ்வில் சூறாவளிகள் வீசும்போது மட்டும் இறைவார்த்தைகளின் படி வாழ்வை அமைத்துக் கொள்ள முடியுமா என்பது சந்தேகம்தான். நமது அனுதின வாழ்வில் இறைவார்த்தைகளை உள்வாங்கி, அந்த அடித்தளத்தில் வாழ்வை நாம் கட்டிஎழுப்பினால், வீசும் சூறாவளிகள் நேரத்தில் அந்த வாழ்வில் நாம் நம்பிக்கையுடன் தஞ்சம் புக முடியும்.
இயேசு இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் கூறியுள்ள வார்த்தைகளுடன் நம் சிந்தனைகளை நிறைவு செய்வோம்:
நான் சொல்லும் இவ்வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு இவற்றின்படி செயல்படுகிற எவரும் பாறை மீது தம் வீட்டைக் கட்டிய அறிவாளிக்கு ஒப்பாவார். மழை பெய்தது; ஆறு பெருக்கெடுத்து ஓடியது; பெருங்காற்று வீசியது; அவை அவ்வீட்டின் மேல் மோதியும் அது விழவில்லை. ஏனெனில் பாறையின்மீது அதன் அடித்தளம் இடப்பட்டிருந்தது.
