First Sunday of Advent

Around midnight of April 14, 1912, ‘the unsinkable Titanic’ hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank around 2.00 a.m. on April 15.  Over 1,500 people lost their lives in one of the worst sea disasters in history.  A few years ago, a magazine recalled the great disaster and asked its readers this shocking – almost blasphemous question: “If we’d been on the Titanic when it sank, would we have arranged the deckchairs?”  At first we say to ourselves, “What a ridiculous question!  No one in his right mind would ignore wailing sirens on a sinking ship and rearrange its deck chairs!  No one with an ounce of sanity would ignore the shouts of drowning people and keep arranging deck chairs!” But as we continue to read the magazine, we see the reason for the strange question.  And suddenly we ask ourselves, “Are we perhaps, rearranging the deckchairs on a sinking ship?  For example, are we so caught up with material things in life that we are giving a back seat to spiritual things?  Are we so busy making a living that we are forgetting the purpose of life?  Are we so taken up with life that we are forgetting why God gave us life?” (Adapted from Mark Link in Sunday Liturgies).

Such soul-searching questions are raised as we begin a new liturgical year this Sunday with Advent. Advent is a special season to help us get ready to welcome Baby Jesus. Getting ready for the feast is more exciting than celebrating the very feast day. My childhood memories of Christmas flood my mind right now. The days preceding Christmas were very exciting. Crib to be put up, decorations to be done, new dress to be bought or stitched, sweets and savouries to be prepared… the list was long. Everyone in the house, especially Mom, was very busy, over-worked, perhaps. I guess this is the same story for any festive season – be it Deepavali, or Pongal in India. Expectation and excitement seem to be twins. The season of Advent brims with joyous expectation.

Strangely, today’s gospel from Luke gives us more of a jolt rather than joy. Two weeks back, the Sunday’s Gospel reading taken from Mark spoke of the last days. Today, we hear of the last days again… this time, from the Gospel of Luke. Right at the beginning of a new liturgical year, we are asked to think of the end of the world… Why talk about the end at the beginning itself, especially when the end is quite frightful? We can look at it this way. When we see what awaits us at the end, we can take enough care to make our journey more meaningful.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives a list of all the terrifying signs first:  "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.” (Luke 21: 25-26)

This passage about the ominous signs of creation comes to us at an opportune moment. The U.N. Climate Change Summit -  COP 24 - will begin in Katowice, Poland, on Monday, December 3. The ‘signs in the sun, moon and stars; the anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea; the terror and apprehension of what is coming on the world’ have necessitated this Summit.

In almost all the natural disasters, it is the poor who suffer the most. Our political leaders, ignoring all the signs of the times, are dancing to the tune of the rich. They are making only cosmetic changes in government policies to stem the crisis of the climate change. Their total attention and loyalty is towards the rich. They are busy ‘arranging the deckchairs’ so that the rich may sit more comfortably, while the rest of the world is sinking!

Prior to the COP 24 summit, there was the G 20 summit held in Buenos Aires for two days - November 30 and December 1. Presidents and Prime Ministers of the so called 20 ‘super power’ nations met, more as a ritual. The palpable tensions that ran among the leaders spoke volumes of each of them. Here are two headlines that appeared on December 1:

The photographs taken during this summit speak volumes of the prevailing tensions. "A picture is worth a thousand words"!

Keeping both G 20 and COP 24 in mind, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres held a press meet on November 28 where he said: “Our world is obviously facing a crisis of confidence. Those left behind by globalization are losing trust in governments and institutions.” He has called for global leadership to be stepped up, “at a time of declining global trust.”

Our leaders, almost all of them, have failed the people to a large extent. Some of them have reached abysmal depths in people’s trust. A similar situation prevailed during the time of Prophet Jeremiah. God had to intervene and set the leadership issue right. The first reading today bears the good news of God’s intervention to send a righteous leader among them:

“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring forth for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell securely.” (Jeremiah 33:14-16)

We pray that the Good Lord may send righteous leaders among us today. We also pray that those who participate in COP 24 summit may keep in mind the tragic plight of millions of poor people and not the millions of dollars paid by the rich to the politicians, so that they may continue with their destructive exploitation of the earth for more profits!

Let us get back to the Gospel reading. After enlisting terrifying signs, Jesus goes on to give us a perspective: “When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21: 28) When all the people in the world faint and are scared of what is coming to the world, we are asked to stand up and lift up our heads. How is this possible? By changing our perspective - namely, looking at that calamity not as an end of the world, but as the beginning of redemption. If the end is seen as destruction, then we need to run away from there, escape destruction… but , if the end is seen as redemption, we don’t need to run away; but rather run towards the bosom of God… the end of the race!

Perspective can change our attitude and action. Destruction and doom, therefore, despair - these call for escape. Redemption, therefore, hope - these call for surrender. Nazi camps and the holocaust have been etched deeply in human psyche. The gory details of these camps serve as samples of doom and destruction. But, the very same camps have been beacons of hope as well. More than hundred films have been made on Nazi camps. Quite a few of them are very uplifting. One of them is: “LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL”.

A four year old boy is imprisoned along with his dad in the worst of conditions in a Nazi camp. The father tries to tell the boy that the whole thing is a game, a game where they need to score points: 20 for not insisting on going home, 10 for not asking for bread, 10 for hiding in the bunkers the whole day… and so on. Why does the boy need to score these points? He will be given a real army tank if he scores enough points.

Towards the end of the movie, the father of the boy is caught by the German soldiers and led away. The small boy is watching this. The father walks away, as if he was marching in a triumphant parade… his head held high. He is shot at the corner of the street. The boy does not know that his Dad is dead. The next day, it so happens that the Germans are defeated and the US army gains access to the camp and the boy sees a real tank riding into the camp. He is thrilled to see the tank as predicted by his Dad. He is sure that he had won the tank! The film ends there.

It is heartening to see the father walking away to his death with head held high and the little boy riding out of the camp in a tank, with his head held high. They are the examples of what Jesus talks about in today’s Gospel: “When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Advent is a season that invites us to stand up, lift up our heads and see our salvation. Let us try to spread this hopeful attitude as we begin Advent, since the world around us is in short supply of hope!

திருவருகைக் காலம் முதல் ஞாயிறு

1912ம் ஆண்டு, ஏப்ரல் 15ம் தேதி, அட்லாண்டிக் பெருங்கடலில் 'டைட்டானிக்' என்ற கப்பல் மூழ்கிய நிகழ்வு, வரலாற்றில் தனியிடம் பெற்றுள்ளது. அந்நிகழ்வையொட்டி, பல்வேறு கருத்துப்பரிமாற்றங்கள் அவ்வப்போது ஊடகங்களில் வெளிவந்தவண்ணம் உள்ளன. சில ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன், மாத இதழ் ஒன்றில், இந்நிகழ்வை மையப்படுத்தி வெளியான ஒரு கட்டுரையில், அதிர்ச்சியளிக்கும் ஒரு கேள்வி முன்வைக்கப்பட்டது. "டைட்டானிக் கப்பல் மூழ்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது, நாம் அங்கே இருந்திருந்தால், கப்பலின் மேல்தளத்தில் போடப்பட்டிருந்த சாய்வு நாற்காலிகளை ஒழுங்குபடுத்தியிருப்போமா?" என்பதே அக்கேள்வி.

“என்ன ஒரு முட்டாள்தனமான கேள்வி இது! யாரும் இத்தகைய மதியற்ற செயலை செய்யமாட்டார்களே” என்று எண்ணத்தோன்றுகிறது. ஆனால், ஆர, அமர சிந்தித்தால், வாழ்வின் பல தருணங்களில், இதையொத்த செயல்களில் நாம் ஈடுபட்டிருக்கிறோம் என்பதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். நம்மைச் சுற்றி பல வழிகளில் ஒலிக்கும் எச்சரிக்கைகளில் கவனம் செலுத்தாமல், அர்த்தமற்ற, அவசியமற்ற விடயங்கள் மீது நம் கவனம் திரும்பியதில்லையா? எது முக்கியம், எது அவசியம் என்பதை சரியாக சீர்தூக்கிப் பார்க்க இயலாமல், நாம் தவித்ததில்லையா? என்ற கேள்விகளை எழுப்பி, விடைகள் தேடுவதற்கு, இந்த ஞாயிறு வழிபாடு வாய்ப்பளிக்கிறது.

இன்று நாம் கொண்டாடும், திருவருகைக் காலத்தின் முதல் ஞாயிறு, புதியதொரு வழிபாட்டு ஆண்டை ஆரம்பித்துவைக்கிறது. இந்த ஆரம்பத்தின்போது, முடிவைப்பற்றி எண்ணிப்பார்க்க இன்றைய நற்செய்தி அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறது. ஆரம்பத்திலேயே, முடிவா? அதுவும், அச்சமூட்டும் இப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு முடிவா? என்ற கேள்விகள் எழலாம். ஆனால், ஆரம்பத்திலேயே, இதுதான் முடிவு என்பதைத் தெரிந்துகொண்டால், அதற்கேற்றதுபோல் வாழ்வை நடத்தலாமே! எதிர்நோக்குவது பயங்கரமான முடிவு என்றால், அதைச் சந்திக்க மனதை உறுதிப்படுத்திக் கொள்ளலாமே! இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நம் சொந்த வாழ்வின் முடிவு மட்டுமல்ல, இவ்வுலகத்தின் முடிவும் இணைத்து சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளது:

லூக்கா நற்செய்தி 21: 25-26

அக்காலத்தில் மானிட மகன் வருகையைப்பற்றி இயேசு தம் சீடர்களுக்குக் கூறியது: “கதிரவனிலும் நிலாவிலும் விண்மீன்களிலும் அடையாளங்கள் தென்படும். மண்ணுலகில் மக்களினங்கள் கடலின் கொந்தளிப்பின் முழக்கத்தினால் கலங்கி, என்ன செய்வதென்று தெரியாது குழப்பம் அடைவார்கள். உலகிற்கு என்ன நேருமோ என எண்ணி மனிதர் அச்சத்தினால் மயக்கமுறுவர். ஏனெனில், வான்வெளிக் கோள்கள் அதிரும்.”

ஆபத்தை உணர்த்தும் அபாயச் சங்குபோல் ஒலிக்கும் இந்த நற்செய்திப் பகுதி, டிசம்பர் 2, இந்த ஞாயிறன்று நமக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளதை, அருள்மிகுந்ததொரு வாய்ப்பாகக் கருதவேண்டும். காரணம், போலந்து நாட்டின் காட்டோவீத்ச (Katowice) நகரில், டிசம்பர் 3, இத்திங்கள் முதல், டிசம்பர் 14ம் தேதி முடிய, காலநிலை மாற்றம் குறித்த உலக உச்சி மாநாடு நடைபெறவுள்ளது. COP 24 என்றழைக்கப்படும் இந்த உலக உச்சி மாநாடு, நம் பொதுவான இல்லமான பூமிக்கோளத்தின் எதிர்காலத்தை தீர்மானிக்கும் அளவு முக்கியத்துவம் பெற்ற ஒரு மாநாடு. கதிரவன், நிலவு, விண்மீன் அகியவற்றில் தோன்றும் மாற்றங்கள், கடல் கொந்தளிப்பு, உலகிற்கு என்ன நேருமோ என்ற அச்சம்... என்று, நற்செய்தியில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள ஒவ்வொரு வரியும், இந்த உச்சி மாநாட்டில் கலந்துகொள்ளும் உறுப்பினர்களுக்குத் தரப்படும் எச்சரிக்கை போல ஒலிக்கின்றது.

தனி மனிதர்களும், தொழில் நிறுவனங்களும் கொண்டிருக்கும் அளவுக்கு மீறிய பேராசையால், நமது சுற்றுச்சூழல் சீரழிந்து வருவதையும், காலநிலை மாற்றங்களால், மக்கள், குறிப்பாக, வறியோர், பெரும் அழிவுகளுக்கு உள்ளாவதையும் அறிவோம். இந்த அழிவுகளைக் கண்டும், காணாததுபோல், தனி மனிதர்களின் பேராசைகளுக்குத் துணை போகும் தலைவர்களைக் காணும்போது, இவர்கள், மூழ்கும் கப்பலில், சாய்வு நாற்காலிகளை ஒழுங்குபடுத்துவதில் ஈடுபட்டிருப்பவர்களோ என்று எண்ணத் தோன்றுகிறது. மக்கள் நலனில் அக்கறையின்றி, தங்கள் சொந்த நலனில் மட்டுமே அக்கறை கொண்டுள்ள தலைவர்கள், உலகின் பெரும்பாலான நாடுகளில், தற்போது, பொறுப்பேற்றுள்ளனர் என்பது, வேதனையான உண்மை.

COP 24 உச்சி மாநாட்டிற்கு முன்னதாக, G 20 என்றழைக்கப்படும், உலகத் தலைவர்கள் அமைப்பு, நவம்பர் 30 மற்றும் டிசம்பர் 1 ஆகிய இரு நாள்கள், ஆர்ஜென்டீனாவின் புவனஸ் அயிரஸ் நகரில், ஒரு கூட்டம் நடத்தியது. இந்தக் கூட்டத்தில் கலந்துகொண்ட உலகத்தலைவர்கள், ஒருவரையொருவர் சந்தித்தபோதும், சந்திப்பைத் தவிர்த்தபோதும், இவர்களிடையே நிலவிய வெறுப்பு உணர்வுகள் வெளிப்படையாகவே தெரிந்தன.

COP 24 மற்றும், G 20 கூட்டங்களை மனதில்கொண்டு, ஐ.நா.அவை பொதுச்செயலர், அந்தோனியோ கூட்டேரஸ் அவர்கள், கடந்த புதனன்று (நவ. 28) செய்தியாளர்களிடம் பேசிய வேளையில், இன்றைய மனித சமுதாயத்தையும், சுற்றுச்சூழலையும் காப்பதற்கு, நம்பிக்கைக்குகந்த, உண்மையான தலைவர்கள் தேவை என்ற கருத்தை வெளியிட்டார். "நமது உலகம் நம்பிக்கையிழந்து வருகிறது. குறிப்பாக, உலகமயமாக்கலின் தாக்கத்தால் ஒதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள கோடான கோடி மக்கள், அரசுகளிலும், உலக நிறுவனங்களிலும் நம்பிக்கையிழந்து வருகின்றனர்" என்று அவர் கூறியுள்ளார்.

தற்போதுள்ள தலைவர்கள் மீது நம்பிக்கையிழந்து, நல்ல தலைவர்களுக்காக ஏங்கி நிற்கும் இன்றைய மக்களைப் போலவே, இறைவாக்கினர் எரேமியா காலத்தில் வாழ்ந்த இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களும், தகுதியான தலைவர்களைக் காண்போமா என்று ஏங்கியிருந்தனர். அவர்களுக்கு ஆறுதல் வழங்கும் வகையில், இறைவாக்கினர் கூறும் செய்தி, இன்றைய முதல் வாசகமாக ஒலிக்கிறது:

எரேமியா 33:14-16

இதோ, நாள்கள் வருகின்றன, என்கிறார் ஆண்டவர். அப்பொழுது இஸ்ரயேல் வீட்டாருக்கும் யூதா வீட்டாருக்கும் நான் கொடுத்துள்ள வாக்குறுதியை நிறைவேற்றுவேன். அந்நாள்களில் நான் தாவீதிலிருந்து நீதியின் தளிர் ஒன்று முளைக்கச் செய்வேன். அவர் நாட்டில் நீதியையும் நேர்மையையும் நிலைநாட்டுவார். அந்நாள்களில் யூதா விடுதலை பெறும்; எருசலேம் பாதுகாப்புடன் வாழும்.

இறைவாக்கினர் எரேமியாவின் வழியே, இறைவன் வழங்கிய ஆறுதலான வாக்குறுதி, நம்பிக்கைக்குரிய நல்ல தலைவர்கள் வழியே, இன்று நம்மையும் வந்தடையவேண்டும் என்று மன்றாடுவோம். வர்த்தகத்தையும், இலாபத்தையும் முன்னிறுத்தாமல், மக்களின் நலன்களையும், நமது பொதுவான இல்லமான பூமியின் பாதுகாப்பையும் முன்னிறுத்தி, நல்ல முடிவுகளை எடுக்கவேண்டுமானால், தலைவர்கள், தங்கள் மனசாட்சியின் குரலுக்குச் செவிசாய்க்க வேண்டும். இந்தப் புதுமை, போலந்து நாட்டில் நடைபெறும் COP 24 உச்சி மாநாட்டில் நிகழ்வதற்கு, இறைவனை உருக்கமாக மன்றாடுவோம்.

சுற்றுச்சூழலைக் காப்பது, அரசுகளின் கடமை மட்டுமல்ல; அது நம் ஒவ்வொருவரின் கடமை. நம் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்வில், சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதுகாப்பு குறித்து, பல முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொள்ளலாம். நம் இல்லங்களிலும், அலுவலகங்களிலும் தண்ணீர், மின்சக்தி,  காகிதம் ஆகியவற்றை, கவனமாக, சிக்கனமாகப் பயன்படுத்துவதில், நம் முயற்சிகள் துவங்கலாம். சொந்த வாகனங்கள் இருந்தால், அவற்றைப் பயன்படுத்துவதிலும், பிளாஸ்டிக் பொருள்களை பயன்படுத்தாமல் இருப்பதிலும், கூடுதல் கவனம் செலுத்தலாம்.

துவங்கவிருக்கும் காலநிலை உச்சி மாநாடு, பொதுமக்களாகிய நமக்கு மிகவும் முக்கியமான கூட்டம் என்பதை, உலகத் தலைவர்கள் உணரவேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தில், உலகின் பல நாடுகளில், சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதுகாப்பை வலியுறுத்தி, ஊர்வலங்களும், பிற நிகழ்ச்சிகளும், ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன. நாம் வாழும் பகுதியில், இத்தகையப் பொது நிகழ்வுகள் நடைபெற்றால், அவற்றில் பங்கேற்பதும், சுற்றுச்சூழலைக் குறித்து நாம் கொண்டுள்ள அக்கறையைக் காட்டும்.

உலக முடிவைப் பற்றி இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் நாம் வாசிக்கும்போது, அந்த முடிவைச் சந்திக்கும் மனநிலையைப்பற்றி சிந்திக்கவேண்டும். கடல் கொந்தளிப்பு, கலகம், குழப்பம், அச்சம் என்று பயம்தரும் ஒரு பட்டியலைத் தரும் இயேசு, அந்நேரத்தில், நம்மை, என்ன செய்யச் சொல்கிறார்? “இவை நிகழத் தொடங்கும்போது, நீங்கள் தலைநிமிர்ந்து நில்லுங்கள்; ஏனெனில் உங்கள் மீட்பு நெருங்கி வருகின்றது.” (லூக்கா 21:28)

தப்பித்து, தலைதெறிக்க ஓடச் சொல்லவில்லை; மாறாக, தலை நிமிர்ந்து நிற்கச்சொல்கிறார். இது அழிவல்ல, இதுதான் மீட்பு என்பதால், நம்மை தலை நிமிர்ந்து நிற்கச்சொல்கிறார்.

அழிவு என்று பார்த்தால், அலறி அடித்து, ஓடத்தான் வேண்டும். மீட்பு என்று பார்த்தால், தலை நிமிர்ந்து நிற்போம், நம் இறைவனைச் சந்திக்க. தப்பிப்பதற்குப் பதில், தந்தையாம் இறைவனில் தஞ்சம் புகுவோம்,. இறைவனையும், வாழ்வையும் குறித்து நாம் கொண்டுள்ள கண்ணோட்டம், நம் செயல்பாடுகளை மாற்றும்.

ஒரு சில தலைவர்களின் ஆணவமும், பேராசையும், இரு உலகப்போர்களாக உருவெடுத்தன. அவ்விரு போர்களில் நிகழ்ந்த கொடுமைகளால், அழிவும், அவநம்பிக்கையும் உலகில் மண்டிக்கிடந்தன. குறிப்பாக, ஹிட்லர் என்ற ஒரு தனி மனிதனின் தவறான எண்ணங்களால் நாத்சி வதை முகாம்கள் உருவாக்கப்பட்டன. அந்த வதை முகாம்கள், நம்பிக்கையை வேரறுத்த அதே வேளையில்,  நம்பிக்கை தரும் நல்ல பாடங்களையும் கற்றுத்தந்தன. நாத்சி வதை முகாம்களைப் பற்றி பல நூறு கதைகளும், திரைப்படங்களும் உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. 90களில் வெளிவந்த இரு திரைப்படங்களின் கதைகளை, இன்று நாம் சிந்திக்கும் மீட்புக்கு, உதாரணமாகச் சொல்லலாம்.

"வாழ்க்கை அழகானது" (Life is Beautiful) என்ற தலைப்பில் வெளியான படம், நாத்சி வதை முகாமில் அடைக்கப்படும், தந்தை, தாய், நான்கு வயது சிறுவன் ஆகியோர் அடங்கிய ஒரு சிறு குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றியது. தாய் தனியே அடைக்கப்படுகிறார். சிறுவன் தந்தையுடன் தங்கவேண்டிய கட்டாயம். நடப்பது என்ன என்று அறியாத அச்சிறுவனிடம், அந்த வதை முகாமில் நடக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு பயங்கரச் செயலுக்கும் வித்தியாசமான விளக்கம் தருகிறார் தந்தை. அவர்கள் இருவரும் அங்கு வந்திருப்பது, ஒரு விளையாட்டிற்காக என்று, தன் கற்பனைக் கதையை ஆரம்பிக்கிறார். மறுபடியும் வீட்டுக்குப் போகவேண்டுமென சிறுவன் அடம் பிடிக்காமல் இருந்தால், 20 புள்ளிகள் பெறலாம், பசிக்கிறதென்று அழாமல் இருந்தால், 10 புள்ளிகள் பெறலாம்... என்று, தந்தை தன் நான்கு வயது சிறுவனிடம் கற்பனைக் கணக்கொன்றைச் சொல்லி, அவனை அந்த முகாமில் தங்கவைப்பது, மிக அழகாகச் சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்தப் புள்ளிகளெல்லாம் பெற்றால்...? ஒரு இராணுவ பீரங்கி வண்டி பரிசாகக் கிடைக்கும் என்று தந்தை சொல்லும் கனவு, அச்சிறுவனை, நம்பிக்கையோடு காக்க வைக்கிறது.
