4^th Sunday of Easter – Mother’s Day

Today’s liturgy gives us an opportunity to celebrate a ‘Triple Feast’: May 12, the IV Sunday of Easter is celebrated as the Good Shepherd Sunday as well as the World Day to pray for Vocations. This being the second Sunday of May, many countries around the world celebrate “Mother’s Day”. On May 13, Monday, we also celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima. We begin our reflection on this ‘Triple Feast’ with three news items.

Generally, news shared by the media snap the threads of hope in our hearts. Occasionally, we come across some news items that enkindle the fire of hope in us. Here are three such news to help our reflection:

On April 21, Easter Sunday, Ramesh Raju was standing with his family near the entrance to Zion church in Batticaloa on Sri Lanka’s east coast, waiting for the Easter service to start, when he spotted the man who had come to attack their community. “My husband sensed something was wrong,” Raju’s wife Chrishanthini told the BBC, as she described how her husband stopped the suicide attacker from entering the church, sealing his own fate but almost certainly saving many other lives. Barred from entering the church, the bomber had blown himself up outside, where there were fewer people. But in saving others, Raju sacrificed his own life.

A young flight attendant was hailed as a hero Monday (May 6) after refusing to leave the doomed Russian airliner while passengers were still aboard and died while helping them evacuate the flaming plane, according to a report. Maxim Moiseyev could not open the door in the rear of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 during the inferno, so he began guiding passengers toward the evacuation slides at the front… He lost his life after refusing to leave anyone aboard behind before fleeing himself, the news outlet reported.

On Sunday, August 16, 1987, Northwest Airlines Flight 255, crashed shortly after takeoff from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, killing all six crew members and 148 of its 149 passengers, along with two people on the ground. The sole survivor was a 4-year-old girl, Cecelia Cichan, who sustained serious injuries. It was the second-deadliest aviation accident at the time in the United States. News accounts say when rescuers found Cecelia they did not believe she had been on the plane. Investigators first assumed Cecelia had been a passenger in one of the cars on the highway onto which the airliner crashed. But when the passenger register for the flight was checked, there was Cecelia's name. Reports said: "Cecelia survived because, as the plane was falling, Cecelia's mother, Paula Chichan, unbuckled her own seat belt, got down on her knees in front of her daughter, wrapped her arms and body around Cecelia, and then would not let her go."

Ramesh Raju, Maxim Moiseyev, and Paula Cichan, in dying to save others, became living examples of the motherly love of the Good Shepherd. The IV Sunday of Easter is called the ‘Good Shepherd Sunday’. In all the three liturgical years (A,B,C), for this Good Shepherd Sunday, we have the Gospel passages taken from the Gospel of John, describing the different qualities of the Good Shepherd – especially his personal care (calling each sheep by name), and commitment (unlike the hireling).  

In the year 1963, Pope St Paul VI instituted the World Day of Prayer for Vocations on the Good Shepherd Sunday. This Sunday – May 12 – as we celebrate the 56^th Vocation Sunday, Pope Francis is ordaining 19 Deacons as Priests in St Peter’s Basilica. The combination of Good Shepherd Sunday, Vocation Sunday, and Ordination Sunday is an invitation to reflect on leadership in the Church, and pray for the present and future leaders of the Church.

When we think of the great qualities required for a worldly leader, efficiency, talent for governance and decision making are spoken of first. Sensitivity, tenderness and identifying with the people are not usually considered the most important aspects. Unfortunately, these aspects are not considered the most important even for religious leaders in the 21st century. The model of leadership set by the worldly leaders has, unfortunately, become a yardstick by which Church leadership is also measured. We talk of how ‘efficient’ our Church and Religious leaders are. We are also sadly aware that quite many of our leaders – like Bishops and Religious Superiors – are given training in ‘managerial skills’ by management schools.

In our effort to project ‘efficient leadership’, the original ‘servant leadership’ of the Gospel, has become a distant memory. This Sunday gives us an opportunity to refresh our memory on ‘servant leadership’ given to us by Christ – the Good Shepherd.

The image of the Good Shepherd evokes very tender feelings and thoughts in us. Church history points out, that the Good Shepherd was one the first images used in the Christian tradition, to represent Jesus. Painting of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is found in the catacombs of Rome. Most of the paintings of the Good Shepherd depict Jesus carrying a lamb on his shoulders with tender love. But the life of a shepherd is not all smooth and shiny. The shepherd needs to lead his flock through many dangerous circumstances and be ready to lay down his life for the sheep.

Our thoughts now turn to the second reason for today’s celebration – namely, Mother’s Day. Reading through quite a few vignettes on the evolution of this day, I was very impressed with the "Mother's Day Proclamation" by Julia Ward Howe. This proclamation was one of the early calls to celebrate Mother’s Day in the United States. Written in 1870, Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation was a pacifist reaction to the carnage of the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. The Proclamation was tied to Howe’s feminist belief that women had a responsibility to shape their societies at the political level. Here are the famous lines of this proclamation:

Arise, then, women of this day!

Arise, all women who have hearts,

Whether our baptism be of water or of tears!

Say firmly:

"We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies,

Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.

Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn

All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.

We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country

To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

From the bosom of the devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own.

It says: "Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."

Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession.

As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war,

Let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel.

Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.

Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means

Whereby the great human family can live in peace,

Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,

But of God.

This poem, as we see, was written in the context of a war. Our world is constantly at war. As Pope Francis has often said, that the 21^st century is witnessing ‘World War III in bits and pieces’. One of the lines in this poem talks of the smell of carnage: Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.

The latest carnage was witnessed in Sri Lanka. Most of the responses to the carnage created by terrorism is state approved military strikes, resulting in more carnage. Only mercy and pardon can break this cycle of violence and a mother is an inexhaustible source of mercy and pardon. Unless all of us deal with the human family with the qualities of a mother, wars will continue. The closing line of this poem caught my special attention:

“Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means

Whereby the great human family can live in peace,

Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,

But of God.”

Imprinting the image of Caesar or God on this world… on each individual? A challenge worth considering.

The image of Caesar symbolising power has made the world a battlefield all the time. As against this, Julia’s poem talks of imprinting the image of God which symbolises peace and love. Mary, the Mother of Christ, constantly imprinted God’s image on this world not only during her life time, but also after her return to heaven. Through her apparitions in different places, in different decades, her only aim was to imprint the image of God more and more on the world. Especially, during her apparitions in Fatima, Mary had revealed about the devastations of war and the need to pray for peace.

On this special day – Good Shepherd Sunday + Mother’s Day + Feast of Our Lady of Fatima – we shall celebrate God the Mother and the Good Shepherd. We also celebrate maternal instincts given to each of us. Only with motherly care can we impress God on the world. Only with motherly care can we sustain this world in peace!

மே 5, கடந்த ஞாயிறன்று, இரஷ்ய விமானம் ஒன்று, அவசரமாகத் தரையிறக்கப்பட்டபோது தீப்பிடித்ததால், அதில் பயணம் செய்த 78 பேரில், 41 பேர் உயிரிழந்தனர். இது வேதனையான செய்தி என்றாலும், அந்த அழிவின் நடுவிலும், நல்லவர் ஒருவரைப் பற்றிய செய்தியும் வெளியானது. விமானத்தில் பணியாற்றிய மாக்ஸிம் மொய்செயேவ் (Maxim Moiseyev) என்ற இளையவர், பயணிகளைக் காக்கும் முயற்சியில், தன் உயிரை இழந்தார்.

1987ம் ஆண்டு, ஆகஸ்ட் 16ம் தேதி, அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாட்டின் டிட்ராய்ட் (Detroit) நகர் விமான நிலையத்திற்கருகிலேயே நடைபெற்ற ஒரு விபத்தில், விமானத்தில் இருந்த 155 பேரில், 154 பேர் கொல்லப்பட்டனர். Cecelia Cichan என்ற 4 வயது சிறுமி மட்டும் உயிர் பிழைத்தார். முற்றிலும் எரிந்துபோயிருந்த அந்த விமானத்தில், அச்சிறுமி மட்டும் உயிர் பிழைத்தது, ஓர் அதிசயம் என்று கருதப்படுகிறது. விமானம் ஆபத்தில் உள்ளது என்பதை அறிந்த Ceceliaவின் அன்னை, Paula Cichan அவர்கள், தன் இருக்கையைவிட்டு எழுந்து, Ceceliaவின் இருக்கைக்கு முன் முழந்தாள்படியிட்டு, தன் மகளை இறுக அணைத்துக்கொண்டார் என்றும், அவரது அணைப்பினால், சிறுமி Cecelia உயிர் பிழைத்தார் என்றும் சொல்லப்படுகிறது. அந்த விபத்தில், Ceceliaவின் அம்மா, அப்பா, மற்றும், 6 வயதான அண்ணன் மூவரும் உயிரிழந்தனர்.

மற்றவர்களின் உயிரைக் காக்க தங்கள் உயிரை இழந்த இந்த மூவரைப்போல், வரலாற்றில் பல்லாயிரம் பேர் உயிர் துறந்துள்ளனர். இவர்கள் அடைந்தது, வீரமரணம் என்று பொதுவாகக் கூறப்படும். ஆனால், இவர்கள் அடைந்த மரணம், வீரத்திற்கும் மேலாக, அன்பை, பரிவை, கனிவை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளது என்பதை மறுக்க இயலாது. இந்த அன்பு, பரிவு கனிவு, ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்டாட, இந்த நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறு, அன்னை தினம், பாத்திமா அன்னை திருநாள் ஆகிய மூன்றும் நம்மை அழைக்கின்றன.

1963ம் ஆண்டு, புனிதத் திருத்தந்தை 6ம் பவுல் அவர்கள், நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறை, இறையழைத்தலுக்காகச் செபிக்கும் உலக நாள் என்று உருவாக்கினார். இவ்வாண்டு, மே 12, இறையழைத்தலுக்காகச் செபிக்கும் 56வது உலக நாள் சிறப்பிக்கப்படும் வேளையில், புனித பேதுரு பசிலிக்காப் பேராலயத்தில், திருத்தந்தை பிரான்சிஸ் அவர்கள், 19 தியாக்கோன்களை, அருள்பணியாளர்களாகத் திருநிலைப்படுத்துகிறார். நல்லாயன் ஞாயிறு, இறையழைத்தல் ஞாயிறு, இளையோர், அருள்பணியாளர்களாக அருள்பொழிவு பெறும் ஞாயிறு என்ற எண்ணங்களை இணைக்கும்போது, திருஅவையின் இன்றையத் தலைவர்கள், நாளையத் தலைவர்கள் ஆகியோரைப்பற்றி சிந்தித்து, செபிக்க அழகியதொரு தருணத்தை இஞ்ஞாயிறு நமக்கு வழங்கியுள்ளது.

ஒரு தலைவனுக்குத் தேவையான பண்புகள் எவை என்ற கேள்வி எழுந்தால், நிர்வாகத் திறமை, அறிவுக்கூர்மை, வீரம் என்ற பண்புகளையே முதலில் எண்ணிப்பார்ப்போம். இளகிய, மென்மையான மனம், மக்களுடன் தன்னையே இணைத்துக்கொள்ளும் குணம் போன்ற பண்புகளை நாம் எண்ணிப் பார்ப்பதில்லை. "எங்கத் தலைவருக்கு ரொம்ப இளகிய மனசு" என்று யாராவது சொன்னால், அதை, கேலி கலந்த ஒரு சிரிப்புத் துணுக்காகவே பார்ப்போம்.

உலகத் தலைவர்களிடம், பரிவு, கனிவு, மென்மை ஆகியப் பண்புகளை எதிர்பார்ப்பது வீணானது என்று எண்ணுகிறோம். அரசியல் தலைவர்களைப்போலவே, ஆன்மீகத் தலைவர்களிடமும், நாம், கனிவு, பரிவு ஆகிய குணங்களுக்கு மேலாக, நிர்வாகத் திறமைகளை எதிர்பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்துள்ளோம் என்பது, கவலை தரும் ஒரு போக்கு. தலைவர்களுக்குரிய பண்புகள் என்று, மேலாண்மை நிறுவனங்கள் சொல்லித்தரும் பாடங்களை, ஆன்மீகத் தலைவர்களும் கற்றுக்கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்ற போக்கு, மறைமாவட்டங்கள், துறவு சபைகள் ஆகியவற்றில் வலுவடைந்து வருவதைக் காணமுடிகிறது. ஆபத்தான இந்தப் போக்கிற்கு ஒரு மாற்றாக, ஆன்மீகத் தலைவர்களிடம் நாம் எவ்வகைப் பண்புகளை எதிர்பார்க்கவேண்டும் என்பதைச் சிந்திக்க, நல்லாயன், அன்னை என்ற இரு உருவங்களை இணைத்துவரும் இஞ்ஞாயிறு, நமக்கு அழைப்பு விடுக்கிறது.

நல்லாயன் என்றதும், இயேசு, ஓர் ஆட்டுக்குட்டியை, தன் தோள்மீது, அல்லது, மார்போடு அணைத்து, சுமந்துசெல்லும் அழகான உருவம், நம் உள்ளங்களில், முதலில் பதிகின்றது. ஆனால், உண்மையான ஆயன், தன் ஆடுகளை அழைத்துச்செல்லும் வழியில் சந்திக்கும் ஆபத்துக்களை, அவ்வேளையில் ஆயனிடம் வெளிப்படும் உறுதியை, தியாகத்தை, இந்த ஓவியங்கள் நினைவுறுத்துவதில்லை.

அதேபோல், அன்னை என்றதும், குழந்தையை அணைத்தல், உணவூட்டுதல், தூளியில் தாலாட்டுதல் போன்ற உருவங்களே நம் உள்ளங்களில் முதலில் தோன்றும். அன்னையாக வாழ்வதற்கு, ஒரு பெண் மேற்கொள்ளவேண்டிய போராட்டங்களையும், அந்தப் போராட்டங்களில் பெண்கள் காட்டும் வலிமையையும் நாம் எண்ணிப்பார்ப்பதில்லை.

இத்தகைய வீரத்துவ, உறுதிமிக்க உணர்வுகளே, அன்னை தினம் உருவாக காரணமாக அமைந்தன என்பதை, இன்று நாம் கொண்டாடும் அன்னை தினத்தின் வரலாறு நமக்குச் சொல்லித் தருகின்றது. அன்னைக்கென வருடத்தின் ஒரு நாளை அர்ப்பணிக்கும் எண்ணத்தை, 19ம் நூற்றாண்டில் வித்திட்டவர், சமூக ஆர்வலரும், கவிஞருமான Julia Ward Howe. இவர் 1870ம் ஆண்டு, சக்திவாய்ந்த ஒரு கவிதையை எழுதினார். Mother's Day Proclamation, அதாவது, "அன்னைதின அதிகாரப்பூர்வ அறிவிப்பு"  என்ற பெயரில் அவர் வெளியிட்ட கவிதை, அன்னை தினத்தைக் கொண்டாடும் எண்ணத்திற்கு வித்திட்டது.

அமெரிக்காவின் உள்நாட்டுப் போர் நடந்த காலத்தில் எழுதப்பட்ட அக்கவிதையில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ள தாய்மைப் பண்புகள், இன்றைய உலகிற்கு மிகவும் தேவையானப் பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித்தருகின்றன. அன்னை, அல்லது, அம்மா என்றதும், வீட்டுக்குள், அடுப்படியில் முடங்கிக்கிடக்கும் பெண்ணாக, அவர்களை எண்ணிப்பார்த்த காலத்தைக் கடந்து, சமுதாயத்தில், நல்ல முடிவுகளை எடுக்க, குறிப்பாக, உலக அமைதியை முன்னிறுத்தி, முடிவுகள் எடுக்க, பெண்கள், வீட்டைவிட்டு வெளியேற வேண்டும்; அவர்களது மென்மை கலந்த உறுதி, உலகின் பிரச்சனைகளைத் தீர்க்கும் என்று, அக்கவிதை முழங்குகிறது. இதோ, அக்கவிதை:

மகளிரே, இன்று எழுந்து நில்லுங்கள்! இதயமுள்ள மகளிரே, எதிர்த்து நில்லுங்கள்!

உங்களது திருமுழுக்கு, தண்ணீரால் நடந்திருந்தாலும், கண்ணீரால் நடந்திருந்தாலும் சரி... இப்போது எழுந்து நில்லுங்கள், எதிர்த்து நில்லுங்கள்.

உறுதியாகச் சொல்லுங்கள்: “வாழ்வின் மிக முக்கியமானக் கேள்விகளுக்கு, விடைகளைத் தீர்மானிக்கும் உரிமையை, குடும்பத்துடன் சிறிதும் தொடர்பற்ற நிறுவனங்களுக்கு விட்டுக்கொடுக்க மாட்டோம்.

சண்டைகளில், உயிர்களைக் கொன்று குவித்த கொலை நாற்றத்துடன் வீடு திரும்பும் கணவர்கள், எங்கள் ஆரவார வரவேற்பையும், அரவணைப்பையும் பெறுவதற்கு, நாங்கள் இணங்கமாட்டோம்.

பிறரன்பு, கருணை, பொறுமை என்று நாங்கள் சொல்லித்தரும் பாடங்களை மாற்றி, அவற்றிற்கு எதிரான பாடங்களைச் சொல்லித்தரும் நிறுவனங்களிடம் எங்கள் குழந்தைகளை ஒப்படைக்க மாட்டோம்.

ஒரு நாட்டைச் சார்ந்த பெண்களாகிய நாங்கள், மற்றொரு நாட்டைச் சார்ந்த பெண்கள் மீது கனிவு கொண்டவர்கள். எனவே, எங்கள் மகன்கள், அப்பெண்களின் மகன்களைக் காயப்படுத்த விடமாட்டோம்.

அன்னையரின் ஒருமித்த தீர்மானங்களை, இவ்வாறு, தெளிவுடன் வெளியிடும் இவ்வறிக்கை, தொடர்ந்து, அமைதிக்காக ஏங்கி, ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் அலறும் பூமித்தாயுடன், அன்னையரின் குரல்களை இணைக்கிறது.

நிர்மூலமாக்கப்பட்ட இந்தப் பூமியின் அடிவயிற்றிலிருந்து எழும் ஓர் ஓலம், எங்கள் குரல்களுடன் இணைகிறது. அது சொல்வது இதுதான்: "ஆயுதங்களைக் களையுங்கள்! ஆயுதங்களைக் களையுங்கள்! உயிர் குடிக்கும் வாள், ஒருநாளும், நீதியை நிலைநாட்டும் தராசு ஆகாது!" என்பதே, பூமியின் அடிவயிற்றிலிருந்து எழும் அந்த ஓலம்.

போர்க்கள அழைப்பைக் கேட்டு, தங்கள் நிலங்களையும், தொழிற்சாலைகளையும் விட்டுச்சென்றுள்ள ஆண்களைப் போல், பெண்களும், தங்கள் இல்லங்களை விட்டு வெளியேறட்டும். போரில் ஈடுபடும் ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டிலும் நல்ல முடிவுகள் உருவாக, பெண்களும், தங்கள் வீடுகளை விட்டு வெளியேறட்டும்.

போரில் இறந்தோரை நினைவுகூர, அவர்களுக்காக அழுது புலம்ப, பெண்கள் ஒன்று சேரட்டும். இந்த மனிதக் குடும்பம், அமைதியில் வாழ்வதற்குரிய வழிமுறைகளை, பெண்கள் கலந்து பேசட்டும்.

உலகின்மேல், சீசரின் உருவத்தைப் பதிக்காமல், கடவுளின் உருவத்தைப் பதிப்பது எவ்விதம் என்பதை, பெண்கள், இவ்வுலகிற்குச் சொல்லித் தரட்டும்.
